ER Nurse resume example

Anything can come through an emergency department door, from a sprained wrist to a cardiac arrest, and ED managers hire nurses who can take it all in stride. Emergency experience, quick triage and assessment, and the certifications in the posting are what they screen for. That is tough to show, because your best shifts are often the ones where nothing went wrong, and a calm handoff rarely comes with a number. Your department does track plenty, and those counts deserve a place in your bullets.

How to Write an ER Nurse Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep a reverse-chronological layout on 1 page; 2 can work once you have charge, educator or travel roles, or 10+ years across several hospitals.
  • Describe each emergency department by its beds, daily or yearly visits and trauma level, then give your usual assignment.
  • Build bullets around numbers an ED already tracks: door-to-triage time, sepsis bundle compliance, trauma activations and patients who left without being seen.
  • List your RN license first under Certificates, then CEN or TCRN, your TNCC verification, then BLS, ACLS and PALS.
  • Name ESI triage and your charting system, such as Epic or MEDITECH, in Skills, then prove each one inside a bullet.
  • Run the file through an ATS resume checker before you apply, because hospital portals screen for abbreviations such as CEN and TNCC.

What ED nurse managers look for in an ER nurse resume

An emergency department manager reads your resume for 3 things: ED experience at a volume close to theirs, the life support and trauma credentials their job ad lists, and evidence that you sort patients by acuity without losing track of anyone. ER nurses fall under O*NET's Registered Nurses occupation, whose top tasks are recording vital signs, giving medications while watching for reactions, and reporting changes in a patient's condition. In an ED those tasks run alongside constant arrivals, so your bullets should show the pace as well as the task.

Include these sections:

  • Your name and contact details, with a headline such as Registered Nurse, BSN, CEN
  • A 2 to 3 line profile under your name, which takes no heading
  • Work Experience, newest first, with Emergency Department or the ED type in each job title
  • Certificates: RN license, then emergency certifications, course verifications and life support
  • Skills, with ESI triage and your EHR
  • Education
  • Languages if you speak one your patients do, plus awards or volunteer work

Best format for an ER nurse resume

Choose the reverse-chronological resume format and put your newest job first, each with the title and unit, the hospital and its location, with the months you started and left as MM/YYYY. Many ER nurses arrive from another unit, such as med-surg, telemetry or ICU, and putting the newest job on top makes that path easy to follow. If you also worked the fast track, an observation unit or a pediatric ED inside the same hospital, name it in a bullet rather than as a separate job.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for an ER nurse resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

1 page carries most ER nurse resumes through the first 10 years. 2 pages can work once you have charge, educator or travel roles to show, or 10+ years across several hospitals; keep your license, certifications and current ED on page 1. A part-time or per diem ED job held alongside a full-time role gets its own entry with its own dates.

ER Nurse resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 once charge, educator or travel work needs the room
DatesMM/YYYY for every job and credential, Present for the current one
Job title lineRegistered Nurse, Emergency Department, or the ED type, such as Pediatric Emergency Department
HoursPart-Time or Per Diem after the job title when it applies
TypefaceBody text in Calibri, Arial or a similar clean font, 10.5 to 12 pt
Photo and personal detailsUsually no photo in the US and Canada; no birth date, marital status or Social Security number either
File typeA PDF, or Word if the hospital portal requires it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Use that space for your credentials instead: an ED manager scanning a stack of applications looks first at the line under your name, so keep RN, BSN and CEN or TCRN there once you hold them.

ER nurse resume summary vs. objective

Use one test: have you worked as an RN in an emergency department? If yes, write a resume summary with your ED years, the department's size or trauma level, 1 result and your top credential. If you are a new graduate or moving to the ED from another unit, open with a resume objective: the ED role you want and the experience that transfers to it.

ER nurse resume summary formula

Credentials ER nurse with X years in type and size of emergency department. 1 result with a number from triage, sepsis, stroke or throughput. Certification you hold, or the next one you are preparing for.

Example

CEN-certified ER nurse with 5 years in a 46-bed community emergency department. Raised the department's sepsis bundle compliance from 61% to 88% as its sepsis champion. TNCC-verified and preparing for the TCRN.

Don't

Dedicated ER nurse who thrives in a fast-paced, high-stress environment and provides quality care to every patient.

Do

ER nurse with 2 years in a rural critical access ED, often the only RN on nights with 1 physician. ACLS and PALS current, with the CEN exam booked for 03/2027.

The rewrite shows the setting, the responsibility and the next credential instead of claiming a trait.

How to write ER nurse work experience bullets with numbers

Give your current ED job 3 to 4 bullets and earlier jobs 1 to 3. Open with the department: beds, daily or yearly visits, trauma level and the zones you cover, such as triage, resuscitation or fast track. Then add results the ED already reports on its dashboard, which turns ordinary shifts into achievements on your resume.

Numbers that prove emergency nursing work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
TriagePatients triaged a shift, ESI accuracy audits, door-to-triage minutesTriaged up to 60 walk-in and EMS arrivals a shift with ESI and passed 4 quarterly accuracy audits.
ResuscitationCodes, trauma activations, intubations assistedActed as recorder or primary nurse for 35 trauma activations in 2025, from rapid infuser setup to handoff to the OR.
Time-critical careSepsis bundle compliance, stroke and STEMI alert timesStarted the sepsis bundle within 1 hour for 92% of flagged patients over 6 months, above the department's 80% goal.
ThroughputLeft without being seen, door-to-provider time, boarding hoursHelped launch a nurse-led rapid medical evaluation zone that cut left-without-being-seen rates from 4.1% to 1.8%.
SafetyWorkplace violence reports, falls, restraint documentationTrained 22 colleagues in de-escalation; restraint documentation errors in audits fell from 9 to 2 a quarter.
LeadershipCharge shifts, new ED nurses precepted, committeesTook charge 2 shifts a week for 11 nurses and 4 techs across 3 ED zones.

Here is one ER nurse's entry with the department described first and the results after it. The older med-surg job keeps a single bullet with its patient load and the ED floating that led to the transfer.

Sample entry: ER nurse at a community hospital emergency department

Work Experience

Registered Nurse, Emergency Department06/2021 – Present
Arvenmoor Regional Medical Center | Little Rock, AR
  • Work every zone of a 46-bed ED with about 190 visits a day, carrying 4 acute care patients or 2 in resuscitation.
  • Reduced median door-to-triage time from 14 to 8 minutes by moving a second triage nurse to the front desk at peak hours.
  • Precepted 6 nurses new to the ED through a 14-week orientation since 2023.
Registered Nurse, Medical-Surgical07/2019 – 05/2021
Tovenridge Hospital | Conway, AR
  • Cared for 5 adults a shift on a 32-bed surgical unit and floated to the ED for 40 shifts before transferring.

Don't

Triaged patients in the emergency department.

Do

Triaged about 40 patients a shift with ESI and called 3 to 4 stroke alerts a month from the triage desk.

Volume and a time-critical call show a manager what you handle alone at the front door.

Don't

Responsible for patient care in a busy trauma bay.

Do

Managed 2 trauma bay patients at a time and ran the rapid infuser for 12 massive transfusion activations in 2025.

ER nurse skills and EHR software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills that match the job ad and that your bullets back up. Triage and rapid assessment fit nearly every ER nurse resume; pediatric resuscitation, sexual assault exams or psychiatric holds only where your ED actually did them.

Hard skills for ER nurses

  • ESI triage
  • Rapid patient assessment
  • Trauma resuscitation
  • IV access and rapid infusion
  • Cardiac monitoring and 12-lead ECG
  • Sepsis screening and bundles
  • Stroke and STEMI protocols
  • Procedural sedation monitoring
  • Medication administration
  • Wound care and splinting

Soft skills ED managers value

  • De-escalation
  • Prioritizing under pressure
  • Closed-loop communication
  • Calm with frightened families
  • Teamwork during codes
  • Switching between zones mid-shift

Put your EHR in Skills and show it at work in one of your bullets, such as charting triage or a go-live. O*NET lists Epic Systems and MEDITECH software among the hot technologies for registered nurses. If your ED charts in Cerner, write Oracle Health (Cerner) for any job after the 06/2022 acquisition, so a search for either name finds you. Tracking boards, rapid infusers and pump libraries go in a bullet only when the job posting names them.

CEN, TNCC and life support certifications for an ER nurse resume

Start with the license. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says a registered nurse needs a license from the state where they work, which takes an approved nursing program and a qualifying exam. If yours is multistate, write that on the license line: NCSBN counts 43 jurisdictions in the Nurse Licensure Compact as of 2026, and a multistate license lets you practice in the others without new licenses, which matters for travel work or a job across a state line. Then list your certifications in order: emergency specialty, course verifications, then life support.

Emergency nursing credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
BLS, ACLS and PALSAmerican Heart AssociationProvider courses in basic, adult advanced and pediatric advanced life support; give the month of your current cards, on 1 line if they share a date.
CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse)Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN)An active, unencumbered RN license plus a passing exam score. The 2 years of ED experience BCEN suggests is a recommendation only, and the credential renews every 4 years.
TCRN (Trauma Certified Registered Nurse)Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN)The same license rule and the same nonbinding 2-year experience recommendation as the CEN, with its own exam.
TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)Emergency Nurses Association (ENA)Online modules, then about a day and a half of classroom work and skill stations, then an open-book exam; provider verification lasts 4 years.
ENPC (Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course)Emergency Nurses Association (ENA)A course built for pediatric and non-pediatric nurses; provider verification lasts 4 years.

How to list TNCC, ENPC and a CEN you have not passed yet

TNCC and ENPC are course verifications, not board certifications, so list them as ENA does: Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) provider verification, with the month it was issued. A CEN you are preparing for belongs on the resume only with a date, written as scheduled with the exam month. Add CEN after your name only once you pass, and leave your license number off, since hiring teams check it with the board.

Sample Certificates section: ER nurse with CEN and TNCC

Certificates

  • Registered Nurse (RN), Arkansas, Arkansas State Board of Nursing, 06/2019
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN), Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing, 04/2023
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) provider verification, Emergency Nurses Association, 09/2022
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), American Heart Association, 01/2026
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), American Heart Association, 01/2026
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), American Heart Association, 01/2026

How to list a BSN or ADN on an ER nurse resume

The Bureau of Labor Statistics names 3 education paths into registered nursing: a bachelor's degree in nursing, an associate's degree in nursing or a diploma from an approved program. Licensed graduates of any of them qualify for staff nurse jobs, but the bureau adds that employers, hospitals in particular, may require a bachelor's degree. Check whether the ED posting says BSN required or BSN preferred, and if you hold an ADN with a BSN under way, list the BSN on top with its expected month.

Use the standard order for education on a resume: degree, school, its location and the month you graduated. In your first 2 years, add your emergency or critical care practicum with its hours, and a GPA only if it is 3.5 or above. After that, the degree line alone is enough.

Sample education entry: BSN with an emergency practicum

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)05/2019
University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences | Little Rock, AR

Senior practicum: 135 hours in an adult emergency department.

New grad, part-time and career-change ER nurse resumes

Postings differ: some ED roles take new graduates through a residency or a long orientation, while others ask for 1 to 2 years on another unit first. As a new graduate, start with an objective built on 2 facts, the ED residency you want and your license status with a month, then put your emergency practicum where a recruiter sees it. If you are still in school, the nursing student resume examples show how to lay out clinicals.

  • Emergency practicum: the ED, its trauma level, your hours and how many patients you carried by the last shift.
  • ED tech, EMT or paramedic work: a full Work Experience entry with calls or patients a shift and the skills you used, such as 12-lead ECGs or splinting.
  • Credentials earned early: BLS, ACLS and PALS, plus TNCC if your school or employer offered it, all under Certificates.
  • Event medical tents or free clinics: Volunteer Experience, with the number of people you assessed.

Don't

New graduate nurse eager to learn and gain experience in a fast-paced emergency room.

Do

BSN graduate with an RN license issued 07/2026, applying to an ED nurse residency. Completed a 144-hour practicum in a 28-bed adult ED and 2 years as an EMT-Basic with a county ambulance service.

A license date, practicum hours and a pre-licensure clinical job give the objective its evidence.

Part-time and per diem ER nurses write the schedule into the title line, such as Registered Nurse, Emergency Department (Part-Time), and count results over a period that fits the hours, such as a year instead of a month. Moving to the ED from ICU, PACU or another unit, keep reverse-chronological order and lead each older job with what an ED uses: titrated drips, rapid assessment, codes. The career-change resume layout helps if you come from outside nursing, and these healthcare cover letter examples show how to explain the move in a few lines.

ER Nurse resume FAQ

Do I need a CEN to work as an ER nurse?

No. The CEN is a voluntary board certification from BCEN, open to any RN with a current, unencumbered license, and BCEN only recommends 2 years of emergency experience before the exam. Where a posting lists it as preferred, a scheduled exam date under Certificates still shows you are on the way.

What is the difference between TNCC and TCRN on a resume?

TNCC is a course: ENA's Trauma Nursing Core Course ends in a 4-year provider verification, and non-RNs can take it too. TCRN, Trauma Certified Registered Nurse, is a BCEN board certification earned by exam and open only to licensed RNs. List both under Certificates with their issuers and dates.

Can a new grad nurse get hired in the ER?

Yes, where the hospital runs an ED residency or a new-graduate track. Show your emergency practicum hours, any EMT or ED tech work and current BLS, ACLS and PALS, and name the residency you want in your objective so the recruiter routes your application there.

How long should an ER nurse resume be?

1 page for most staff ER nurses. 2 pages can work once you have charge, educator or travel roles, or 10+ years across several hospitals, as long as page 1 holds your license, certifications and current ED.

Should I list ESI triage on my resume?

Yes, if you triage. Write ESI triage in Skills and back it with a bullet that gives the patients you triaged a shift or an audit you passed. ENA, which bought the 5-level Emergency Severity Index in 2019, describes it as used by nearly every emergency nurse in the United States.

How do I show charge nurse experience on an ER nurse resume?

Put it inside the ED job as a bullet unless you hold a charge title: how many charge shifts a week, how many nurses and techs you led, and 1 result, such as faster bed assignment from triage. A formal charge role gets its own entry with its own dates.

How do I list per diem or part-time ER work?

Give each job its own entry and add Part-Time or Per Diem after the title. If you hold a full-time job and a per diem ED role at the same time, list both with their overlapping dates and put the per diem one second.

Should I include EMT or ED tech experience on an ER nurse resume?

Yes, especially in your first 2 years as an RN. Give it a Work Experience entry with calls or patients a shift and the skills that carry over, such as 12-lead ECGs, splinting or trauma assistance. Once you have a few years in the ED, shorten it to 1 line.

What is the average salary for an ER nurse?

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the median annual wage for registered nurses, the occupation ER nurses belong to, was $97,550 in May 2025. It publishes no separate ER figure. Leave pay off your resume and raise it once an offer is on the table.
