Nurse resume example

Two nurses with the same job title can have very different days, and hiring managers know it. They read your resume for a setting like theirs, the certifications the role calls for, and results you can point to. Because nursing jobs sound alike on paper, each one you list needs a detail that sets it apart. This guide shows how to find that detail for every role.

How to Write a Nurse Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Use the reverse-chronological format on 1 page; 2 pages fit once you have 10+ years or several specialties.
  • Name the unit, its bed count and your usual patient ratio under every nursing job.
  • Give bullets a number a nurse manager tracks: falls, infections, scan rates, discharges or new nurses precepted.
  • List your RN license first under Certificates, with the issuing state board and the word multistate if it applies.
  • Add BLS, ACLS and specialty certifications such as CCRN or CEN with their issuers and dates.
  • Check the file with an ATS resume checker, since hospital systems screen for license and certification keywords.

What nurse managers look for in a nurse resume

A nurse manager reads your resume to answer 3 questions: are you licensed in this state, have you worked on a unit like theirs, and can you carry its patient load safely. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists assessing patients' conditions, administering medicines and treatments, and teaching patients and families how to manage an illness as core RN duties. O*NET adds monitoring and reporting changes in a patient's condition and supervising less-skilled staff. Your bullets should show those tasks on a named unit, with the volume you handled.

Use these sections, with headings an applicant tracking system reads without trouble:

  • Name, headline (for example, Registered Nurse, BSN, CCRN) and contact details
  • Summary: 2 to 3 lines at the top, with no heading needed
  • Work Experience, newest job first, with the unit in each job title
  • Certificates: your RN license first, then specialty and life support certifications
  • Skills, including your charting system
  • Education
  • Optional: Key Achievements, Volunteer Experience or Languages

Best format for a nurse resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: newest job first, each with the job title and unit, the facility, its city and MM/YYYY dates. Nursing careers are read as a sequence of units, so this order lets a manager follow your path from med-surg to step-down or ICU. If you floated to other units, name them in a bullet instead of listing them as separate jobs.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a nurse resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep it to 1 page in your first 10 years. A 2-page resume suits nurses with several specialties, charge or leadership roles, or research and teaching work, as long as your license and current unit sit on page 1.

Nurse resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page, or 2 with 10+ years or several specialties
DatesMM/YYYY, with Present for your current job
Job title lineTitle plus unit: Registered Nurse, Emergency Department
FontA plain sans serif at 10 to 12 pt for body text
Photo and personal detailsUsually no photo in the US and Canada; never a birth date, marital status or Social Security number
File typePDF, unless the hospital's portal asks for a Word file

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Hospital application portals often parse your file into their own fields, so a clean single file with standard headings matters more here than a striking layout.

Nurse resume summary vs. objective

If you have worked as an RN, write a resume summary: your years, your specialty, your unit type and 1 result. If you are a new graduate or moving into nursing from another job, write a resume objective instead: the unit or residency you want, your license status and your strongest clinical hours. Write it after the rest of the resume, and take its number from your bullets.

Nurse resume summary formula

Credentials nurse with X years in specialty, working on a size and type of unit. 1 result with a number. Certification or the next step you are working toward.

Example

Registered nurse with 4 years in nursing, the last 3 in cardiac care, on a 30-bed step-down unit at a teaching hospital. Trained 25 colleagues in teach-back for heart failure discharges. PCCN-certified and finishing an MSN in nursing education.

Don't

Compassionate and hardworking nurse dedicated to providing excellent patient care in a fast-paced environment.

Do

Emergency department RN with 3 years at a Level II trauma center, triaging about 18 patients a shift. TNCC-verified and sitting for the CEN in spring 2027.

The second version names the unit, the volume and the next credential.

How to write nursing work experience bullets with numbers

Under your current job, write 3 to 4 bullets; older jobs get 1 to 3. Start the first bullet with the unit size and your usual patient ratio, since every other number reads against it. After that, pick results your unit already measures, such as quality scores, safety events or new nurses trained. Follow the general rules for listing work experience on a resume, with the nursing numbers in the table below.

Numbers that prove nursing work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Patient loadBeds, ratio, acuity, admissions a shiftCared for 3 to 4 patients a shift on a 24-bed oncology unit, including 2 chemotherapy infusions a day.
Patient safetyFalls, pressure injuries, medication eventsRan weekly skin audits that cut hospital-acquired pressure injuries from 9 to 3 in a year.
Infection preventionCAUTI, CLABSI, hand hygiene auditsRan monthly hand hygiene audits on 3 units and raised compliance from 82% to 94%.
Patient experienceHCAHPS items, discharge teachingRaised the unit's nurse communication score from 74 to 81 by adding bedside shift report.
LeadershipCharge shifts, nurses precepted, committeesPrecepted 5 new graduate nurses and took charge 1 shift a week for 14 staff.
ThroughputDischarges before noon, transfers, ED holdsMoved discharge teaching to the evening before and raised discharges before noon from 18% to 34%.

Here is one nurse's entry with those numbers in place. The unit and ratio come first, the results follow, and the older job keeps fewer lines.

Sample entry: registered nurse on a cardiac step-down unit

Work Experience

Registered Nurse, Cardiac Step-Down08/2023 – Present
Hollins Ridge Hospital | Columbus, OH
  • Care for 4 to 5 patients a shift on a 30-bed unit, including post-cath, heart failure and new pacemaker patients.
  • Lowered CAUTIs on the unit from 5 to 2 a year as its catheter champion, auditing every indwelling catheter each shift.
  • Teach heart failure discharge plans with teach-back; 30-day readmissions for the unit's HF patients fell from 22% to 17%.
Registered Nurse, Medical-Surgical07/2022 – 07/2023
Brenmoor Health Center | Dublin, OH
  • Cared for 5 to 6 adult patients a shift on a 34-bed unit through the hospital's 12-month nurse residency.

Don't

Administered medications to patients.

Do

Gave scheduled and PRN medications to 5 patients a shift using bedside barcode scanning, with no reported medication events in 2 years.

The rewrite gives the load, the safety step and a result a nurse manager would recognize.

Don't

Responsible for training new staff.

Do

Precepted 4 new graduates through a 12-week orientation; all 4 passed their competency checks on schedule.

Nursing skills and EHR software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the job posting, and keep only those your bullets already prove. Assessment and medication administration belong on almost every nurse resume; drip titration, ventilator care or fetal monitoring only when your unit used them.

Hard skills for nurses

  • Patient assessment
  • Medication administration
  • IV insertion and infusion therapy
  • Telemetry and cardiac monitoring
  • Wound care
  • Care planning
  • Patient and family education
  • Infection prevention
  • Sepsis screening
  • Rapid response

Soft skills nurse managers value

  • Clinical judgment
  • Calm under pressure
  • Clear handoffs
  • Teamwork across disciplines
  • Time management on a full assignment
  • Cultural sensitivity

List your charting system with your skills and name it again in a bullet. O*NET flags Epic Systems and MEDITECH software as hot technologies for registered nurses, along with Microsoft Office. If you charted in Cerner before Oracle bought it in 2022, write Oracle Health (Cerner) so a search for either name finds you. Medication cabinets and pumps, such as Pyxis or Omnicell, belong in a bullet only where the posting names them.

RN license and nursing certifications on a resume

Your license is the first thing a recruiter checks. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that registered nurses must hold a nursing license issued by the state in which they work, and that getting one means graduating from an approved program and passing a qualifying exam, which is the NCLEX-RN. If your license is multistate, add multistate to the license line: NCSBN counts 43 Nurse Licensure Compact jurisdictions, and a multistate license lets you practice in the others without extra licenses. List certifications on your resume under the license, each with its issuer and date.

Common nursing certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
BLS (Basic Life Support)American Heart AssociationA classroom or blended course; the BLS Provider card is valid for 2 years.
ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)American Heart AssociationA provider course that ICU, ED, step-down and telemetry postings often ask for.
CCRN (Adult)AACN Certification CorporationA current RN license and 1,750 hours of direct care of acutely or critically ill adults in 2 years (875 in the latest year), or 2,000 hours in 5 years.
CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse)Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN)A current RN license and the exam; BCEN recommends 2 years in emergency nursing but does not require it.
CMSRN (Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse)Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB)A current RN license and 2,000 hours of medical-surgical practice in the last 3 years.
MEDSURG-BCAmerican Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC)2 years of full-time RN practice, 2,000 medical-surgical hours and 30 hours of continuing education in the last 3 years; valid for 5 years.

How to write the license line

Write the license type, multistate or the state name, the issuing board and the month it was issued. Leave the license number off: hiring teams verify licenses with the board themselves. Put BSN and your certifications after your name in the headline, and use RN there only once the license is issued.

Sample Certificates section: RN license and certifications

Certificates

  • Registered Nurse (RN), Ohio, Ohio Board of Nursing, 07/2022
  • Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN), AACN Certification Corporation, 05/2025
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), American Heart Association, 02/2026
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), American Heart Association, 02/2026

How to list a BSN, ADN or nursing diploma

The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes 3 education paths into registered nursing: a bachelor's degree (BSN), an associate's degree (ADN) or a diploma from an approved program. Any of them leads to the NCLEX, but employers, particularly hospitals, may require a BSN. In AACN's 2022 survey of nursing schools, 27.7% of hospitals and other healthcare settings required new hires to hold a BSN and 71.7% strongly preferred one. If you hold an ADN and are working on a BSN, list the BSN first with its expected date.

Follow the usual rules for listing education on a resume: degree, school, city and graduation date. New graduates can add a GPA of 3.5 or higher and their capstone unit in 1 line under the degree; experienced nurses keep the entry to the degree, school and date. New York adds a rule: under its BSN in 10 law, RNs licensed there who are not exempt must earn a bachelor's degree in nursing within 10 years of licensure to keep practicing.

Sample education entry: new graduate

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)05/2022
The Ohio State University | Columbus, OH

GPA 3.7. Capstone: 120 hours on a cardiac step-down unit.

New grad and career-change nurse resumes

As a new graduate, open with an objective that names the unit or residency you want and your license status: NCLEX scheduled, passed, or license issued, with the month. Hospital residencies are built for nurses with less than 12 months of experience, and some run the Vizient/AACN Nurse Residency Program. Write that name in full on your resume, since the same initials also stand for the Neonatal Resuscitation Program. Put your clinical hours where a recruiter can count them, and use the nursing student resume layout if you are still in school.

  • Capstone or preceptorship: the unit, its patient population, your hours and your patient load by the end.
  • Clinical rotations: 1 line under Education with the specialties you rotated through.
  • Patient care technician, CNA or EMT jobs: a full Work Experience entry with patients a shift and the skills you used.
  • Health fairs, flu clinics or camp nursing: under Volunteer Experience, with the number of people you screened or treated.

Don't

Recent nursing graduate looking for an opportunity to grow my skills in a hospital setting.

Do

BSN graduate licensed in Ohio in 08/2026, seeking a nurse residency on a cardiac or step-down unit. Completed a 96-hour capstone on a telemetry floor and 18 months as a patient care technician.

A new grad objective still needs evidence: a license date, a unit and a count of hours.

Changing careers into nursing, or moving up from LPN or CNA to RN, keep reverse-chronological order and lead with your new license and degree, such as an accelerated BSN. Under older jobs, keep the bullets that carry over to the bedside: patient contact, teaching, documentation or work under pressure. Our career-change resume examples show the layout. Your cover letter is the place to explain why you moved, and our healthcare cover letter examples show how to do it in a short paragraph.

Nurse resume FAQ

Should I put my nursing license number on my resume?

No. Write the license type, the issuing board, multistate if it applies, and the month it was issued. Employers verify the license with the board themselves, and leaving the number off keeps it out of every portal your file passes through.

Can I write RN after my name before I pass the NCLEX?

No. Use RN only once your state board issues the license. Before that, write BSN or ADN after your name and give your NCLEX status with a date in your objective, such as NCLEX-RN scheduled for 11/2026.

How do I list a multistate (compact) nursing license?

Write it as Registered Nurse (RN), multistate license, then the board of your home state and the issue date. The Nurse Licensure Compact lets a multistate license holder practice in its other member states without extra licenses, so the word multistate tells an out-of-state employer you can start without waiting for a new license.

Do I need a BSN to get a nursing job?

Not always, but hospitals often ask for one. In AACN's 2022 survey, 27.7% of hospitals and other healthcare settings required a BSN for new hires and 71.7% of employers strongly preferred one. With an ADN, show any BSN in progress with its expected date.

How long should a nurse resume be?

1 page for new graduates and most staff nurses. 2 pages work after 10+ years, or with several specialties, charge or education roles, as long as page 1 holds your license and your current unit.

Should I list every clinical rotation on a new grad nurse resume?

List your capstone or preceptorship as a full entry with its unit and hours, and fold the other rotations into 1 line under your degree. A list of 6 rotations with the same tasks under each takes space your PCT, CNA or volunteer work could use.

Which EHR systems should I name on a nursing resume?

Name the charting system you used, exactly as the hospital calls it: Epic, MEDITECH or Oracle Health (Cerner). Name it once in your skills and once in a bullet that shows what you did in it, such as charting assessments or leading a go-live.

How do I show travel or per diem nursing on a resume?

Group short contracts under the agency as 1 entry with its overall dates, then list each assignment's hospital, unit and length in its own bullet. Per diem work at a second hospital gets its own entry alongside your main job.

What is the average registered nurse salary?

The BLS reports that the median annual wage for registered nurses was $97,550 in May 2025. Pay depends on your state, your unit, your shift and your certifications; leave it off your resume and discuss it at the offer stage.
