23 Nursing Student Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Extern coordinators and nurse recruiters read a nursing student resume for your program, your graduation date, the units you rotated through and the patient care you have already done. Use these examples and the guide below to show your hours, units and patient counts.

Nursing Student resume example

You are still in nursing school, and the externship or new grad job you want asks for experience you are only starting to build. Nurse recruiters and unit managers understand that. They look for where you are in your program, the units you have rotated through, any patient care work such as a CNA job or volunteering, and your expected graduation date. Most of it comes from clinicals, so the real work is making each rotation read like experience, not coursework.

How to Write a Nursing Student Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep it to 1 page in reverse-chronological order and show your degree and expected graduation date in the headline as well as under Education.
  • Write a 2 to 3 line objective naming the externship, internship or residency you want and your expected graduation date.
  • Give each clinical rotation or externship its unit, its hours if your program tracks them and the number of patients you cared for by the end.
  • List CNA first under Certificates, then BLS, and show the NCLEX as scheduled or expected, never as passed early.
  • Say who supervised the care you gave: an RN preceptor, a clinical instructor or a charge nurse.
  • Test the PDF with an ATS resume checker, since hospital portals screen student applications for BLS, CNA and unit keywords.

What nurse recruiters look for in a nursing student resume

A nursing student resume usually lands with an externship coordinator, a unit manager hiring student nurses, or a recruiter filling a new grad residency. Each one checks 4 things first: your program and graduation date, the clinical settings you know, the hands-on care you are already allowed to give, and when you can be licensed. The Occupational Outlook Handbook notes that every RN program, whether a BSN, an ADN or a diploma, includes supervised clinical experience, so a recruiter expects to see yours spelled out.

O*NET lists recording patients' medical information and vital signs as the top-rated task for registered nurses, and that is the kind of work a student can already prove. Vital signs, intake and output, bathing, transfers, ambulation and charting in an EHR all count when you name the unit and the patient load. Build the page from these sections:

  • Name, headline (Nursing Student, BSN Candidate 05/2027) and contact details
  • Objective: 2 to 3 lines under your name, no heading of its own
  • Education, with your expected graduation date and the rotations you have completed
  • Work Experience: externships, preceptorships and paid care jobs such as CNA or patient care technician
  • Certificates: CNA first if you hold it, then BLS and any others
  • Skills, with the charting system you have used
  • Optional: Volunteer Experience, Languages (one your patients speak) and Key Achievements

Best format for a nursing student resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: newest entry first in each section, with MM/YYYY dates. Your program and graduation date are what a coordinator checks before anything else, so put them in the headline and the objective too; most layouts print Education after Work Experience, and the reader still sees your date in the first lines. Once you have worked as an RN, the headline switches to your license.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a nursing student resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep it to 1 page. A student with a CNA job, 2 externships and a research role can still fit, as long as each entry carries 2 to 4 short bullets and the rotations stay in a single line under the degree.

Nursing Student resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page for any stage of nursing school
Graduation dateIn the headline, the objective and the Education entry, written the same way in all 3
HeadlineNursing Student, BSN Candidate with the expected month and year; no RN until the license is issued
DatesMM/YYYY for jobs and certificates; the word expected beside a future graduation date
Photo, age and ID numbersLeft off most US and Canadian resumes; never your age or an ID number
File typeA PDF saved under your full name, or Word when a hospital portal requires it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Hospital extern programs usually take applications through the hospital's career portal, so plain section headings and a single column of dates help the system read your file correctly.

Nursing student resume objective vs. summary

If you have not yet worked as a nurse, write a resume objective: the role you want, your year in the program, your clinical hours and any care job you hold. Switch to a summary only after you have worked as an RN, since a summary sums up a nursing career and you are still building yours. Name the program you are applying to, such as a summer externship or a nurse residency, and change that part for every application.

Nursing student resume objective formula

Year degree student with X clinical hours across rotations. Care job or certification, with how long. Seeking a externship, internship or residency on a unit type in term or date.

Example

Junior BSN student with 210 clinical hours across 4 rotations, including medical-surgical and pediatrics. Certified nursing assistant for 2 years in long-term care. Seeking a summer 2027 nurse externship on an adult medical-surgical unit.

Don't

Motivated nursing student eager to gain hands-on experience and learn from experienced nurses in a hospital setting.

Do

Senior BSN student graduating 05/2027, with rotations in med-surg, pediatrics, OB and behavioral health. Seeking a new graduate residency on an orthopedic or surgical unit.

Date, settings and unit come first here, in the order a residency recruiter screens them.

How to write clinical rotations and work experience with numbers

Externships, preceptorships and paid care jobs go under Work Experience, each with its title, the facility, the city and its dates. The newest entry takes 3 to 4 bullets and earlier ones take 1 to 3, as with any job in your work experience section. Students rarely have unit results to claim, so count what you did: hours, patients a shift, residents on an assignment, people screened.

Numbers that prove nursing student work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Clinical hoursHours, rotations, unit typesCompleted 126 clinical hours across 3 rotations: medical-surgical, mental health and long-term care.
Patient loadPatients a shift, unit size, by which weekTook on 2 patients a shift by week 6 of a telemetry rotation on a 22-bed unit, with the instructor checking each assessment.
Paid care workResidents or patients a shift, facility sizeAssisted 11 residents a shift with meals, bathing and transfers at a 90-bed skilled nursing facility.
Community healthPeople screened, events, vaccines given under supervisionChecked blood pressure for 150 adults at 4 health fairs run by the school's nursing student association.
Teaching and leadershipStudents tutored, simulation hours, offices heldTutored 8 first-year students in dosage calculations for 2 semesters.

Here is how a student with a summer externship and a CNA job lays out both. The externship comes first because it is the newer entry, and each bullet names the supervision behind the care.

Sample entry: nurse extern after a part-time CNA job

Work Experience

Nurse Extern, Orthopedics05/2026 – 08/2026
Tarnhollow Medical Center | Birmingham, AL
  • Cared for 3 to 4 post-op hip and knee patients a shift on a 28-bed orthopedic unit, paired with an RN preceptor for 12 weeks.
  • Walked 6 to 8 patients a day on post-op day 1 under the unit's early mobility protocol, using gait belts and walkers.
  • Charted vital signs, pain scores and intake and output in Epic for each patient, cosigned by the preceptor every shift.
Certified Nursing Assistant09/2024 – 05/2026
Pellbury Senior Living | Hoover, AL
  • Helped 14 memory care residents a shift with bathing, meals and transfers in a 60-bed community, 2 evening shifts a week.

Don't

Assisted nurses with patient care during externship.

Do

Repositioned 5 post-op patients every 2 hours and walked each one twice a shift, reporting pain and vital sign changes to the RN preceptor.

Now a reader sees the load, the task and who you reported to.

Don't

Provided care to residents in a nursing home.

Do

Cared for 16 residents a night shift at a long-term care center, doing hourly rounds that kept assigned residents free of falls for 12 months.

A care job counts when it shows how many people you looked after and how safely.

Nursing student skills and EHR software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that a bullet or your clinical line already backs up. Vital signs, patient hygiene and safe transfers suit any student; wound care, telemetry or newborn assessment only once a rotation or job let you do them.

Hard skills for nursing students

  • Vital signs
  • Head-to-toe assessment
  • Intake and output
  • Safe patient handling and transfers
  • Fall prevention
  • Blood glucose checks
  • Medication administration under supervision
  • Sterile technique
  • Patient education
  • EHR charting

Soft skills nurse educators value

  • Reporting changes early
  • Asking for help
  • Bedside manner
  • Teamwork with CNAs and RNs
  • Time management across classes and shifts
  • Composure in simulation and on the unit

Name the charting system you used in clinicals or at work. O*NET flags Epic Systems and MEDITECH software as hot technology for registered nurses, so if a clinical site let you chart in one of them, write the name exactly, in Skills and in the bullet where you charted. Simulation software or a school's practice EHR belongs only in the education line, never as hospital experience.

CNA, BLS and NCLEX status on a nursing student resume

For a student, the Certificates section shows what you may already do on a unit. The Occupational Outlook Handbook says nursing assistants usually complete a state-approved program, pass their state's competency exam and are then placed on a state registry; some states call the role Certified Nursing Assistant, and titles vary. List certifications on your resume with the issuer and month, starting with the one the job ad requires.

Credentials and honors a nursing student can hold
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)Your state's nurse aide registry (in Alabama, the Department of Public Health)A state-approved training program and the state competency exam; the title varies by state.
BLS (Basic Life Support)American Heart AssociationAn in-person or blended AHA course; your BLS Provider eCard stays valid for 2 years, so renew it before it lapses mid-program.
NCLEX-RNNCSBN, delivered through Pearson VUE, for your state board of nursingGraduation from an approved program, an application to your state board, registration with Pearson VUE and an Authorization to Test (ATT) email.
Sigma membershipSigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of NursingFor BSN juniors and seniors who have finished half the nursing curriculum and rank in the upper 35% of their class, with at least a 3.0 GPA.

How to write NCLEX status before you are licensed

The Occupational Outlook Handbook states that registered nurses need a license from the state where they work, which takes graduation from an approved program and a qualifying exam. Until both are done, write the NCLEX-RN as expected with a month, or as scheduled once you have your ATT and a test date. NCSBN's registration page says candidates must test within the validity dates on their ATT email, so only write a date you have booked.

Sample Certificates section: CNA, BLS and NCLEX status

Certificates

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Alabama Department of Public Health, 08/2024
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), American Heart Association, 01/2026
  • NCLEX-RN, expected after graduation in 05/2027

How to list a BSN or ADN in progress

The Occupational Outlook Handbook describes 3 education paths to registered nursing: a bachelor's in nursing (BSN), an associate's (ADN) or a diploma. Write the degree's full name, the school and city, your start date and Present, then the expected graduation month in the line below, as in any guide to listing education on a resume. That same line holds your rotations, so a recruiter sees your settings without a separate section.

Add your GPA if it is 3.5 or higher, or if the application requests it. Academic honors belong here too: a Dean's List count, or Sigma membership if your chapter inducts you. Membership in the National Student Nurses' Association fits under Key Achievements only with an office or project you led.

Sample education entry: BSN in progress with rotations

Education

Bachelor of Science, Nursing (BSN)08/2023 – Present
University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing | Birmingham, AL

Expected graduation 05/2027. GPA 3.6. Rotations: medical-surgical, pediatrics, OB and behavioral health; 180-hour senior preceptorship in spring 2027.

Nursing student resumes with no experience, or as a second-degree student

With no health care job yet, your clinical rotations carry the resume. Write them in the education line, put your strongest rotation or simulation result in the objective, and add care work done outside a hospital. These count as evidence:

  • Clinical rotations: the unit types, the hours and the most patients you carried in a shift.
  • Retail, food service or campus jobs: 1 to 2 bullets each, with customers served or shifts worked, to show reliability.
  • Health fairs and vaccine clinics: under Volunteer Experience, with the number of people screened.
  • Tutoring, lab assistant or student association roles: under Key Achievements, with a count of students or events.
  • A second language: under Languages, with your level, if patients in your area speak it.

If your first degree is in another field, you may be in an accelerated BSN program. AACN's fact sheet, updated in May 2026, describes these programs as 12 to 18 months long, for adults with a non-nursing degree, and counts 340 of them in 2025. List the accelerated BSN first under Education, keep your first degree below it, and keep only the bullets from your earlier career that carry over: patient contact, teaching, documentation or work under pressure.

Don't

Career changer passionate about helping people and excited to start a new chapter in nursing.

Do

Accelerated BSN student finishing 08/2027, with a B.S. in Kinesiology and 3 years as a physical therapy aide. Seeking a nurse residency on a rehabilitation or orthopedic unit.

Name the first degree and the job that carries over, then the unit you want.

The career-change resume examples show how to order 2 careers on 1 page. Your cover letter is where you explain the move into nursing, and Novoresume's healthcare cover letter examples show how to fit that reason into a short paragraph. Once you are licensed, the nurse resume layout takes over.

Nursing Student resume FAQ

Should a nursing student resume list clinical rotations?

Yes. List them in 1 line under your degree, by unit type, with the total hours if your program tracks them. Give a capstone, preceptorship or externship its own Work Experience entry, since it runs longer and you carried your own patients.

Can I write RN or Student Nurse after my name?

No to RN, since that title needs a license from your state board; Student Nurse is fine. Or write Nursing Student, BSN Candidate, or ADN Candidate, with your expected graduation month in the headline.

Should I put CNA on my resume if I am a nursing student?

Yes, if your certification is current. Put it at the top of Certificates with the state agency and the month you passed, and give your CNA job a full entry under Work Experience. It shows patient care you are certified to give outside your clinical hours.

How do I write my NCLEX date on a resume before I take it?

Write NCLEX-RN expected with the month after graduation, or NCLEX-RN scheduled with the test date once you have your Authorization to Test and a booking. Never write passed or add RN to your name before your state board issues the license.

Where should education go on a nursing student resume?

Above Work Experience while your clinicals outweigh your jobs. Either way, the degree and expected graduation date also sit in your headline and objective, since they answer an extern coordinator's first question; the Education entry adds the school, GPA and rotations.

How long should a nursing student resume be?

1 page. Keep rotations to a single line, give each job 2 to 4 bullets, and cut high school once you have a clinical rotation to list.

Should I list my GPA on a nursing student resume?

Only if it is 3.5 or higher, or the program asks for it or sets a minimum you clear. Use your nursing GPA if it is higher than your overall one, labeled as such.

What should I put on a nursing externship resume with no hospital job?

Lead with your rotations and clinical hours, then add any paid job, even outside health care, with numbers that show reliability. Health fairs, tutoring and a second language fill the rest of the page and match what extern programs ask for.

How much do registered nurses make after nursing school?

The median annual pay for registered nurses was $97,550 in May 2025, in BLS wage data covering every experience level. New graduate pay is usually lower and varies by state and hospital; leave pay off your resume and raise it at the offer stage.
