AI Suggestions

  • Try to keep your resume under 3 pages. Unless you're a doctor or have a highly specialized background, shorter resumes are easier for recruiters and ATS systems to scan. Keep it focused and relevant.
  • Include a link to your portfolio. Whether it's code or design work, a portfolio gives hiring teams a chance to see what you can actually do. It’s one of the most valuable links you can add.

Job Match

80/100

Many companies use keyword-matching algorithms to filter resumes. Without the right terms, your resume might not even get seen.

  • The resume title/summary should match the job title semantically. Make sure your resume headline and summary reflect the title of the job you're applying for. If they're asking for a “Product Manager” and you're calling yourself a “Product Strategist,” you might be getting filtered out, even if the experience matches. Use their language to boost clarity and alignment.
  • Use industry keywords from the job description. Your resume should reflect the language of the job ad, literally. Many companies use keyword-matching systems to filter resumes, so including the top 10–20 terms from the posting can improve your chances. Think of it as speaking the recruiter's dialect.
  • Include relevant tools, platforms, or certifications. Whether it's a specific software, coding language, or certification, mentioning technical terms from the job description helps show you're equipped for the role. Even one match can make a difference, especially for roles that require niche tools or systems.

Format & Structure

79/100

ATS software needs a clean structure to read your resume properly. Complex formatting or unusual layouts can break parsing.

  • You've listed too many skills. Try to keep it under 30. Too many skills can make your resume look unfocused or inflated. Focus on the ones most relevant to the roles you're targeting. Quality over quantity helps recruiters see what you're really good at.
  • Add a professional title near the top of your resume. A clear title helps recruiters quickly understand what kind of role you're targeting. It sets the tone and shows where you fit professionally. E.g., “Project Manager” or “Administrative Assistant” works well.

Content Quality

82/100

Strong resumes tell a clear story. Not just what you did, but why it mattered. Grammar, specificity, and clarity all count.

  • Start with action. Always. Each bullet should kick off with a strong verb, “led,” “designed,” “launched,” “optimized.” If your bullets start with “responsible for,” it’s time for a rewrite. Action words make your contributions clear and compelling.
  • No numbers? No proof. Saying you “led a project” is fine, but saying you “led a project that increased retention by 24%” is way better. Numbers give your achievements weight and credibility. Without them, your impact is just guesswork.

What Your ATS Score Means

Your resume is scored from 0 to 100 across five areas: format, job match, content quality, section organization, and technical elements.

80-100

Good Foundation

Your resume parses cleanly, reads well, and matches your target role. Focus on fine-tuning for each specific application.

50-79

Weak Alignment

Software can read your resume, but weak content or a partial match with your target job is dragging you down. The report shows which sections to rewrite.

0-49

Significant Gaps

At least one serious issue, usually a formatting element that breaks parsing or content with no measurable achievements. Fix the flagged items and rescan; most resumes cross 80 within two revisions.

A high score doesn't guarantee an interview, and we won't pretend it does. It covers the two things you control: software can read you, and a skimming recruiter sees achievements instead of duties.

What a failing bullet looks like

Same job, same person. One gets filtered out. The other gets read.

After
"Grew Instagram following from 8K to 45K in 12 months, driving a 23% increase in inbound leads, using Meta Ads Manager and Later"

Now it contains the tools recruiters search for, a measurable result, and proof of impact.

myth vs. fact

How ATS Systems Actually Work in 2026

There's a lot of fear around applicant tracking systems, and some of it is marketing. Here's what the software actually does, based on Novoresume's own survey of HR professionals.

Myth

The ATS auto-rejects most resumes.

An ATS is a database and workflow tool, not a rejection robot. It parses your resume, stores it in a searchable format, and ranks or filters candidates so recruiters can work through hundreds of applications. Your resume usually isn’t “rejected by a bot.” It’s ranked too low, or parsed too badly, for a human to ever find it. The outcome feels the same, but the fix is different: readable structure and relevant content, not tricks.
Myth

You need to beat the system with keyword stuffing.

White-text keywords and stuffing get you flagged by recruiters, not hired. In our HR survey, 86.2% of recruiters have caught an applicant lying on a resume, and inconsistencies are easier to spot inside an ATS, not harder. The goal is to match the job's language honestly, which is exactly what our job-match analysis checks.
Myth

PDFs can't pass an ATS.

A properly generated PDF with a real text layer parses fine in major systems like Workday, Greenhouse, Lever, iCIMS, and Taleo. What fails is a PDF exported as an image, or text trapped inside graphics and text boxes. Every template in our resume builder exports with a full text layer for exactly this reason.
Fact

The screening is real, on both sides of the software.

82.3% of recruiters in our HR survey use an ATS, and 37.4% say it's central to their process. Once you do reach a human, 74% skim your resume in under 20 seconds. This checker looks at both gates: whether software can read you, and whether a skimming recruiter will keep reading.

What Our 2026 Data Says About Who Gets Skipped

Three reasons qualified people still get ignored, and how to catch each before you apply. For the Resume Report 2026, we surveyed 2,000 U.S. workers about how they actually write and submit resumes.

2x

more interviews

Tailoring is the highest-leverage fix.

Job seekers who keep 4 or more tailored versions of their resume average 4.2 interview invitations per search. Those who send one version everywhere average 2.0. And 93.6% of people who customize every application land at least one interview. Our job-match analysis shows you exactly where your resume and your target role don't line up.

27%

submit AI resumes unedited

AI-written resumes are everywhere, and recruiters notice.

42.6% of job seekers reached for AI the last time they updated their resume, and more than a quarter submitted it without editing a word. That generic, unverifiable content is one of the fastest ways to get skipped. The checker flags it before a recruiter does.

1hr

or less

Most people underinvest in the one document doing all the work.

68.2% of job seekers spend an hour or less updating their resume. A one-minute check before you apply is the cheapest quality control in your entire job search.

What Recruiters Say About Our Resumes

Dozens of hiring professionals independently reviewed Novoresume in 2026. Here's what they told us.

Having spent more than 20 years in recruiting and talent acquisition, I know how quickly recruiters review resumes. In those first few seconds, a clean, organized format that allows the reader to easily find the information they need can make a real difference. Novoresume offers a great variety of professional templates that are consistently clean, crisp, and easy to navigate.
What I particularly like is that the templates are intuitive to customize, with helpful features that guide candidates through the process. Compared with building a resume from scratch in Word or trying to adapt a design-heavy template, Novoresume takes much of the guesswork out of formatting. Whether someone is creating their first resume or updating one after years in the workforce, there are ATS-friendly options that help candidates create a polished, professional resume while keeping the focus where it belongs: their experience and accomplishments.
Melissa O'NeillMelissa O'NeillRecruiter | Career Advisor | Talent Acquisition Manager
I've seen talented professionals miss opportunities simply because their resumes made hiring managers work too hard. When recruiters are reviewing dozens, sometimes hundreds, of applications, clarity becomes a competitive advantage.
These templates do a good job of getting out of the candidate's way. Instead of relying on flashy design, they emphasize organization, readability, and the accomplishments that actually move someone to the interview stage. That's exactly what a resume should do.

As a talent consultant and resume workshop instructor, I am frequently asked, “Where do I begin?” by my students. Novoresume provides a quick, one-stop shop for that answer! The platform provides a multitude of templates for various career levels. What I like most is the education that the platform provides - explaining the reverse-chronological, functional, and combination formats in great detail.
Pointing students here saves me time because Novoresume provides step-by-step resume building guidance. Whether you are a recent graduate, a stay-at-home mom returning to the workforce, or a senior executive, Novoresume has a resume just for you. I love the options and 100% recommend it!

Novoresume is one of the few resume builders that I recommend online. Their resume templates are modern and eye-catching, and will grab an employer's attention. As a former Recruiter, if a candidate sent me a resume built with one of these templates, I would take notice and be impressed.
The software also makes it easy to enter your info and handles all of the formatting for you, so you can get your resume ready to send out as quickly as possible. I recommend these templates whether you're a recent graduate or experienced candidate.
Biron ClarkBiron ClarkFormer Executive Recruiter
I've spent 15 years screening resumes and building requisitions, so when I look at a template, I'm not asking if it's pretty, I'm asking if it survives the ATS and the six second scan. Novoresume's resume templates do both. Clean single column layouts, standard section headers, consistent dates, nothing hiding behind graphics that a parser can't read. That's the unglamorous engineering that gets a resume in front of a human.
These are built for the bulk of the job market: early to mid-term career professionals, career changers, and anyone who wants a polished one-page resume without becoming a part time designer to get there. I especially like seeing functional and hybrid formats offered here, since most builders only give you reverse chronologically and quietly punish anyone whose last title doesn't match their target role.
Compare that to a blank Word doc or Google Doc, where nothing stops you from adding a table or text box that silently breaks parsing, or Canva, which is built for graphic design, not document parsing. Novoresume removes that guesswork. You're choosing from pre-vetted layouts instead of hoping your own formatting survives an ATS you can't see.

As a tech recruiter, something I tell every candidate is that your best qualities should be easy to find, not something a recruiter has to dig for or assume. Novoresume's Tech and IT templates get that right by putting skills front and center from the start. It is a small detail on paper but a massive win in practice.
Over the years, I've watched brilliant researchers stumble when pivoting into the industry, and it usually comes down to the resume. Trying to compress a decade of research onto one page can feel completely overwhelming. Novoresume gives these candidates what they actually need, which is structure. They offer draggable sections for publications and conferences, templates that naturally stretch across two pages, and prompts that nudge candidates to quantify their achievements as they type. It essentially acts like a built-in resume coach. If you want an application that actually gets noticed and lands interviews, this is a great place to start.

The one thing that stood out to me most about this platform was how well it balances design and function. The templates here are simple yet modern, ATS-friendly, and structured in a way that makes it easy for hiring managers to scan relevant experience in seconds.
I love that everything's in one place, whether you're a student with zero work history or a seasoned professional, there's a template that actually fits. This is one of the few resume platforms I'd genuinely vouch for.
Vikalp TiwariVikalp TiwariSenior Talent Acquistion Specialist | US IT Technical Recruiter
I tested Novoresume's resume builder as a recruiter, as a job seeker, and by building both a senior-level profile and a student profile to see how the guidance adapts. What I love the most is how much it coaches toward much better content and correct HR resume practice, not just prettier formatting. It flags empty fields, recommends 3-6 bullets per role, and gives layout advice like switching to a single column for longer resumes. Font and size stay consistent across the whole document, which prevents one of the most common amateur mistakes recruiters see, while bold/italic/underline remain available for local emphasis. It flags and pushes to use action verbs and quantified achievements, catches inconsistent punctuation, and recommends focusing on two skill sections rather than three to keep an application sharp.
I like it that is very seniority-aware: it suggested me as an experienced candidate to drop a coursework listing, while giving a student profile a "minimum 5 skills" threshold and dedicated Soft Skills and Volunteer Experience sections, which is very smart structural instincts for someone without a long work history. As a senior candidate I liked that graduation year isn't flagged as required, which matters for age discrimination. The photo guidance correctly warned me as U.S.-based candidate that employers prefer photo-free applications, and the template library lets you compare styles instantly with real content already in place.
Compared to Word, Docs, and Canva I think this is a real step up for anyone who isn't confident about resume structure, because it actively teaches good practice as you build, and doesn’t let you guess, which none of those tools do.
Aneta TrenkoskaAneta TrenkoskaHR Leader & Consultant
As a seasoned recruiter, I've often seen qualified candidates get passed over simply because their resumes didn't strike the balance between standing out to a hiring team and staying readable to an ATS. Novoresume helps applicants solve exactly that problem.
The platform offers a wide variety of 1-2 page resume templates to choose from that can be tailored to your preferences, regardless of whether you're a student building your first resume, an executive who needs something more polished, or a career-changer who may need a more comprehensive reframing of their skills, experience, and objective. I believe what sets these templates apart is the restraint built into the design. Most of them default to reverse-chronological layouts, clean fonts, and clear section headings, which is exactly the structure that both a recruiter, who is skimming in under 10 seconds, and an ATS parser, that is scanning automatically, respond to best.
That's a significant difference from where many applicants start. Building a resume in Google Docs or Word means you're on your own for formatting and ATS compatibility, and it's easy to break both without realizing it. Canva templates often look great stylistically, but those same eye-catching qualities can just as easily confuse an ATS. Novoresume's templates split the difference because they are visually distinct enough to stand out, but built with an eye toward getting through the ATS filters.

As an international career coach and resume writer, I'm always happy to recommend a resume resource that offers user- and recruiter-friendly templates suitable for a wide variety of countries, industries, and job levels. Novorésumé ticks all those boxes.
I believe that resume companies have a responsibility to consider the quirks of applicant tracking systems and how recruiters assess resumes (many job seekers don't have this insider knowledge, so they're trusting that the resume will land them interviews, not turn away opportunities). Novorésumé is one of the few that gets this right.
All the resume designs are structured in a modern way, and they're visually appealing. I particularly appreciate that the free templates are just as high quality as the premium options (although premium offers a lot more individual control over the final look, including custom layouts and creative backgrounds). I wholeheartedly recommend Novorésumé to any job seeker who wants professional, intuitive templates that do justice to their experience and skills.
Christy MorganChristy MorganInternational Career Coach & Resume/CV Writer
As an Industrial-Organizational Psychology professional and former HR Business Partner, I recognize the importance of how candidates communicate their professional value during the hiring process. Novoresume's resume templates page reflects a strong understanding of how job seekers are actually evaluated in today's hiring process. The templates provide a clear structure that helps applicants highlight their skills, achievements, and career progression while maintaining a professional format that supports readability for both Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) and hiring teams. Compared to traditional resumes created on comparable platforms, these templates offer a more strategic approach by guiding candidates and instructing them to organize their information with purpose rather than focusing only on visual design.
I believe Novoresume’s templates are particularly valuable for professionals who want to strengthen their personal brand and present their experience in a way that aligns with current recruitment practices. The site also stands out for treating the job search as a process to support, not just a document to produce. Features like salary benchmarking and job-search organization tools offer practical, data-informed guidance that reduces uncertainty during a demanding career transition; having tested them directly, I found the results notably accurate.
Mariana MartinezMariana MartinezHR Business Partner & Industrial-Organizational Psychology Professional
As an Executive Career Coach & CV Strategist, one of the questions I'm asked most often is, "What makes a resume stand out?" from a recruiter's perspective, it's rarely about using the most elaborate design. It's about presenting relevant information clearly, logically and in a format that's easy to scan. That's exactly what I like about Novoresume's resume templates. They offer a wide variety of modern, professional designs that cater for everyone from students to experienced professionals without sacrificing readability.
Candidates often underestimate how much time they spend reformatting resumes instead of improving the content. The platform makes it easy to switch between templates, tailor resumes for different opportunities and reuse content without starting from scratch. Combined with the practical guidance, ATS tools and resume matcher, it gives job seekers far more confidence than relying on a blank Word document or generic online template.
I would definitely recommend Novoresume to my clients.
Bev CamplingBev CamplingSenior-Career to Executive-Level Career Coach
Novoresume offers a wide range of resume templates organized by industry, experience level, and style, backed by clear and helpful guidance throughout. The templates are modern, clean, and well-formatted. As a hiring manager, the resume is the first thing I evaluate, and a well-presented document makes a strong first impression.
The guidance section is a particularly valuable feature. While the sheer number of templates can feel overwhelming at first, the platform does a good job of helping users navigate the options. I also appreciate that one-page resumes are available free of charge; this is especially useful for entry-level or junior candidates, who typically have less experience to showcase and benefit from a concise, single-page format.
Arianna BerchicciArianna BerchicciUK HR Consultant
The first thing I look for in a resume is readability and relevance. Does this look like an actual resume? Some people try to reinvent the wheel with the visual layout, and they rarely get past a hiring manager screen. A resume that reads as too busy or too cutesy is a red flag, and it usually covers for a lack of relevant skills. My eyes go to the headline and the summary first. ATS tools highlight the relevant keywords from the search string, and I've used keyword highlight tools while screening. If the screen lights up like a Christmas tree, I slow down and read more.
The Minimalist template is the cleanest one on the page. I like the highlighted keywords in the areas of expertise section. It reads more traditional than the Traditional template does. Traditional and Combined work well for early career candidates or anyone worried they don't have enough content to fill a page. Both use white space and visual hierarchy well. Skill-Based holds up across experience levels with good hierarchy, though the blue sidebar wastes real estate that a condensed contact section would recover. Hybrid runs too busy. Traditional and General are both solid. IT carries a lot of white space that condensing the contact section would fix. The skill bars in the Tech template catch the eye, but people are notoriously bad at leveling their own skills. As a recruiter I always wonder what the scale measures. Familiarity with the tool? How often they use it? Years of experience? It's a nice visual marker that tells me very little about hard skills or tool knowledge.
