19 Travel Nurse Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Agency recruiters and hospital managers check which states you can work in, which units you can take a full assignment on, and how your last contracts ended. Use these examples and the guide below to lay out each contract, license and charting system so they find all 3 fast.

Travel Nurse resume example

Travel nursing means starting over every few months: a new hospital, a new unit, new coworkers and often a new charting system. Recruiters and nurse managers read your resume for proof that you handle that well, along with the licenses, specialty experience and certifications a contract calls for. Yet a run of short assignments can look like job hopping to anyone who skims it. Laid out well, those same contracts become your best evidence that you settle in quickly and finish strong.

How to Write a Travel Nurse Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Lay out your work newest first on 1 page, moving to 2 once you have 8+ contracts or several specialties.
  • Group the contracts each agency placed you in under 1 entry, with 1 bullet per assignment naming the hospital, city, unit and weeks.
  • Count what proves you adapt: contracts completed, extensions and rebookings, orientation shifts, units floated to and charting systems learned.
  • List your multistate license first under Certificates, then every single-state license by state and board.
  • Put your specialty and licensed states in the summary so a recruiter can match you to a contract in seconds.
  • Test the file in an ATS resume checker, since agency and hospital portals both screen for specialty, state and certification keywords.

What travel nurse recruiters look for in a resume

Your resume usually has 2 readers. An agency recruiter checks whether you can be submitted to a contract: the right specialty, recent experience in it, and a license that covers the state. The hospital's nurse manager then checks whether you can take a full assignment after a short orientation. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that registered nurses must hold a license issued by the state in which they work, so the license block matters more here than on almost any other nursing resume.

Both readers scan the same sections, under standard headings:

  • Name, headline with your credentials (Travel Registered Nurse, BSN, PCCN) and contact details
  • A 2 to 3 line summary at the top, unlabeled, naming your specialty and licensed states
  • Work Experience: each agency as 1 entry, each staff job as its own entry
  • Certificates: licenses first, then life support and specialty certifications
  • Skills, with every charting system you have worked in
  • Education
  • Optional extras: Languages, plus Volunteer Experience for medical missions, or Key Achievements

Best format for a travel nurse resume and how to list contracts

Use the reverse-chronological resume format, newest work first. For travel work, the agency is the employer: write Travel Registered Nurse and your specialty as the title, the agency and its office city, and the overall MM/YYYY dates you worked through it. Each contract then becomes a bullet with the hospital, its city, the unit and the weeks. A staff job, or a contract you signed directly with a hospital, stays a separate entry.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a travel nurse resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Grouping is what keeps the page short. 6 contracts of 13 weeks listed as 6 jobs fill a page and read as constant moves; the same contracts as bullets under 1 agency read as 1 steady stretch of work. Keep it to 1 page until you pass about 8 contracts or work in more than 1 specialty, and keep your licenses and latest contract on page 1.

Travel Nurse resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 once you have about 8+ contracts or more than 1 specialty
Contract entries1 entry per agency with its overall dates; 1 bullet per assignment with hospital, city, unit and weeks
LicensesMultistate license first, then each single-state license, under Certificates
DatesMM/YYYY for each entry, Present while you are on contract
Font and layout1 column or a simple 2 column layout, body text no smaller than 10 pt
Photo, birth date and ID numbersA photo is unusual in the US and Canada; skip your date of birth, Social Security number and marital status

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. An agency may send your resume to several hospitals, so a plain PDF with standard headings travels through their systems in one piece.

Travel nurse resume summary vs. objective

If you have finished at least 1 contract, or have staff experience in the specialty you want to travel in, write a resume summary. It answers the recruiter's first questions in 2 to 3 lines: specialty, years, states you can work in, and 1 result. If you are a newer nurse looking for a first contract, a short resume objective works better: the specialty and contract type you want, your license and your months of experience.

Travel nurse resume summary formula

Specialty travel nurse with X years as an RN and N contracts in N states. License: multistate plus any single-state licenses; charted in EHR systems. Extensions, rebookings or a counted result. Certifications.

Example

Telemetry and step-down travel nurse with 8 years as an RN and 6 contracts in 4 states. Arizona multistate license plus a California RN license; charted in Epic, MEDITECH and Oracle Health (Cerner). 4 of 6 contracts extended or rebooked. PCCN, ACLS and BLS current.

Don't

Flexible, adventurous travel nurse who loves new places and adapts quickly to any hospital environment.

Do

Med-surg travel RN with 5 years at the bedside and 4 contracts at teaching hospitals, carrying 5 to 6 patients a shift. Compact license, CMSRN, and fluent in Epic and MEDITECH.

The rewrite gives a recruiter the specialty, the load and the license in the first line.

How to write travel nurse work experience bullets with numbers

Each assignment bullet should prove that the hospital got a nurse who was ready. Start with the unit, its size and your load, then add what shows how the contract went: an extension, a rebooking, units you floated to or a quality result. General rules for listing work experience on a resume still apply, verb first and 1 result per bullet; the table shows the numbers that carry weight in travel work.

Numbers that prove travel nursing work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
ContractsContracts completed, weeks, extensions, rebookingsExtended 2 of 3 contracts at a 400-bed trauma center from 13 to 26 weeks.
Patient loadBeds, ratio, acuityCared for 2 ventilated patients a shift on a 20-bed medical ICU through a 13-week contract.
OnboardingOrientation shifts, charting systems, devicesWorked in 3 charting systems over 5 contracts, each starting with 3 or fewer orientation shifts.
FloatingUnits floated to, float shiftsFloated to 4 units on a 16-week contract, including the observation unit and cardiac step-down.
Licenses and statesStates worked, licenses heldHeld a multistate license and 2 single-state licenses to cover 6 contracts in 5 states.
Safety and qualityFalls, medication events, scan ratesKept a high fall risk neuro unit free of patient falls on every shift across a 26-week contract.

Here is an agency entry built the same way. The first bullet sums up the contracts, each later bullet is 1 assignment, and the staff job underneath keeps a single line.

Work Experience

Travel Registered Nurse, Telemetry and Step-Down09/2021 – Present
Merriwend Nurse Staffing | Phoenix, AZ
  • Completed 6 contracts at 5 hospitals in Idaho, California, Colorado and New Mexico; 4 were extended or rebooked.
  • Carried 4 to 5 patients a shift on a 36-bed telemetry unit at Corriveth Medical Center, Boise, ID, and floated to cardiac step-down 9 times in 26 weeks.
  • Took a full step-down assignment of 3 patients after 1 orientation shift at Sorrelgate Regional Medical Center, Sacramento, CA, charting in Oracle Health (Cerner).
  • Care for 4 patients a shift on a 30-bed telemetry unit at Quenmark Hospital, Albuquerque, NM, on a 13-week contract charted in MEDITECH.
Registered Nurse, Telemetry08/2018 – 08/2021
Tavenford Medical Center | Tucson, AZ
  • Cared for 4 patients a shift on a 28-bed telemetry unit in Epic and took relief charge 2 shifts a month.

Don't

Worked as a travel nurse at various hospitals across the country.

Do

Covered 3 back-to-back 13-week contracts on a 22-bed post-surgical unit, and was rebooked for a fourth by the unit manager.

A rebooking is the clearest sign a contract went well, so give it a number.

Don't

Able to adapt quickly to new environments and work with new teams.

Do

Took a full assignment of 5 patients after 3 orientation shifts on each of 4 contracts, charting in Epic and MEDITECH.

Travel nurse skills and EHR systems for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that match the contract posting, and keep only the ones a bullet already proves. Specialty skills come first, since that is what a contract is filled on: cardiac rhythm interpretation for telemetry, titrating drips for ICU, triage for the ER.

Hard skills for travel nurses

  • Patient assessment
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • Medication administration
  • IV therapy
  • Charting across several EHR systems
  • Admissions, transfers and discharges
  • Care planning
  • Patient and family education
  • Infection prevention
  • Floating across units

Soft skills agencies and nurse managers value

  • Adaptability
  • Quick onboarding
  • Clear handoffs with staff nurses
  • Asking the right questions early
  • Calm on an unfamiliar unit
  • Professional boundaries

Charting systems deserve their own line, because a hospital wants to know you can chart on day 1. O*NET flags Epic Systems and MEDITECH software as hot technologies for registered nurses, and also Kronos Workforce Timekeeper, a timekeeping system worth listing only when a posting names it. Write each system once in Skills and once in the bullet for the contract where you used it. If a hospital's Cerner system now carries the Oracle Health name, write Oracle Health (Cerner) so a search for either term finds you.

Compact license, state licenses and certifications on a travel nurse resume

Your licenses decide which contracts you can take. NCSBN counts 43 jurisdictions in the Nurse Licensure Compact, and under it a multistate license lets you practice in the other compact states without extra licenses. A multistate license is for nurses who live in a compact state, so it comes from your home state's board. States outside the compact, such as California, need their own license. List certifications on your resume after the licenses, each with its issuer and date.

Travel nurse licenses and certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Multistate RN license (Nurse Licensure Compact)The board of nursing in your home stateLiving in a compact state and meeting its licensure rules; if you move to another compact state, NCSBN says to apply there within 60 days.
Single-state RN license by endorsement (California example)California Board of Registered NursingAn active RN license from another state, a passed NCLEX-RN, fingerprints by Live Scan or card, and license verification; a temporary license lets you start work while it is pending.
BLS, ACLS and PALSAmerican Heart AssociationProvider courses that contract postings name in their requirements; PALS where the unit cares for children.
TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)Emergency Nurses Association (ENA)Passing the course earns a 4-year TNCC provider verification.
CCRN (Adult)AACN Certification CorporationAn unencumbered RN license and 1,750 hours caring for acutely or critically ill adults in 2 years (875 in the latest), or 2,000 in 5 years with 144 in the latest year.
CEN (Certified Emergency Nurse)Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN)An unencumbered RN license and the exam; BCEN recommends 2 years in the specialty but does not require them.

How to list a compact license and extra state licenses

Put the multistate license first and say so in the line: Registered Nurse (RN), multistate license, then your home state's board and the issue month. Under it, give each single-state license its state, its board and its month. List only active licenses, and leave the numbers off: employers can look licenses up for free through NCSBN's Nursys QuickConfirm.

Sample Certificates section: multistate license plus a state license

Certificates

  • Registered Nurse (RN), multistate license, Arizona State Board of Nursing, 07/2018
  • Registered Nurse (RN), California, California Board of Registered Nursing, 02/2023
  • Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN), AACN Certification Corporation, 04/2021
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), American Heart Association, 01/2026
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), American Heart Association, 01/2026

How to list a BSN or ADN on a travel nurse resume

The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes 3 paths into registered nursing: a bachelor's degree, an associate's degree or a diploma from an approved program, and it notes that employers, particularly hospitals, may require a bachelor's degree. Since every contract is at a hospital or clinic with its own rules, a BSN opens more of them; if you are finishing one, list it with its expected date above your ADN.

When listing education on a resume, give the degree, the school with its city, and the month you graduated. Once you have finished your first contract, the entry needs nothing more, so leave the GPA and clinical rotations to new graduates and use the space for assignments.

Sample education entry: experienced travel nurse

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)05/2018
University of Arizona | Tucson, AZ

New grad and staff-to-travel nurse resumes

Read the experience line in each contract posting and put your exact months in that specialty in the summary, so a recruiter can check the match at once. As a new graduate, open with your license status, your unit and every month you have worked as an RN, and move rotations and capstone hours to Education. Still in school? Start from the nursing student resume layout.

  • Your staff job: the unit, its bed count and your ratio, as a full Work Experience entry with 3 to 4 bullets.
  • Float pool or resource shifts: the units you covered, as proof you can work on a floor you did not train on.
  • Charge or precepting shifts: how many, and how many staff or students, in 1 bullet.
  • Every charting system: including one used only during clinicals, named in Skills.
  • Medical mission or disaster volunteering: under Volunteer Experience, with the patients seen and the days worked.

Don't

Registered nurse seeking a travel nursing position to gain new experiences and see the country.

Do

Telemetry RN with 2 years on a 32-bed unit and a Texas multistate license, seeking a first 13-week telemetry contract. ACLS and BLS current; charted in Epic throughout.

An objective for a first contract gives the specialty, the months and the license, which is what a recruiter submits you on.

Moving from a staff job to travel work is not a career change, so keep your staff entry as it is and add the agency entry above it once you sign. Your cover letter or recruiter profile is where you say which specialty, states and start date you want; our healthcare cover letter examples show how to say it in a few lines. If your specialty is still taking shape, the nurse resume examples cover staff roles on most units.

Travel Nurse resume FAQ

How do I list multiple travel nursing contracts on a resume?

Group them. Write 1 entry per agency, with Travel Registered Nurse and your specialty as the title and the overall dates, then give each contract a bullet with the hospital, city, unit, weeks and a result. A contract you signed directly with a hospital gets its own entry.

Should the agency or the hospital be the employer on a travel nurse resume?

The agency. It paid you and placed you, so it is the employer of record, and naming it keeps several contracts in 1 entry. Name each hospital inside the bullet for that assignment, with its city and unit, so a manager sees where you actually worked.

How do I show a compact license and other state licenses on my resume?

List the multistate license first under Certificates, written as Registered Nurse (RN), multistate license, with your home state's board and the issue month. Add each single-state license below it with its state and board. Leave off license numbers and any license you have let lapse.

Do short contracts make a travel nurse resume look like job hopping?

Not when they are grouped and labeled. Under 1 agency entry, a set of 13-week contracts reads as planned work, and extensions or rebookings show that hospitals wanted you back. Staff jobs that each lasted only a few months are a different matter, and a cover letter is the place to give them a line of context.

Should I explain gaps between travel contracts on my resume?

No, not for a few weeks between contracts. Because the agency entry runs from your first contract to your last, short breaks do not show as gaps at all. A break of several months can take 1 plain line in a cover letter, such as time spent on a family move or a certification course.

How long should a travel nurse resume be?

1 page for most travel nurses, since grouping contracts under each agency saves a lot of space. Go to 2 pages once you have about 8 or more contracts, more than 1 specialty, or charge and precepting roles worth their own bullets, and keep your licenses on page 1.

Should I list every EHR system I have used as a travel nurse?

Yes, if you could chart in it again without much retraining. Hospitals ask for the system they run, so name each one in Skills, such as Epic, MEDITECH or Oracle Health (Cerner), and tie it to the contract where you used it. Drop a system you touched for a single shift.

How much do travel nurses make?

The BLS does not publish a separate figure for travel nurses. According to the BLS, registered nurses as a group earned a median of $97,550 a year in May 2025. Travel pay is set contract by contract, so keep it off your resume and settle it with the agency before you sign.
