Yoga Instructor resume example

Studios hire yoga instructors who can fill a room, teach every level in it safely and bring the same students back next week. An owner or group fitness manager checks the styles you teach, the training behind your credential, how full your classes run and whether your CPR card is current. Show it on 1 page with plain figures: classes a week, students per class, beginners who stayed on and the hours you have taught.

How to Write a Yoga Instructor Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep to 1 page in reverse-chronological order, with every studio or gym you teach at as its own entry.
  • Put your styles and designation in the headline, such as Yoga Instructor, Vinyasa and Yin, E-RYT 200.
  • Open with 2 or 3 lines on your years teaching, your setting and your best attendance or program number.
  • Count what a studio owner tracks: classes a week, students per class, series graduates who stay and workshops sold.
  • List your Yoga Alliance designation first under Certificates, then specialty trainings and a current CPR and first aid card.
  • Before you send it, confirm every heading and style name reads cleanly with an ATS resume checker.

What studio owners look for in a yoga instructor resume

O*NET lists observing participants and telling them how to correct their form, offering alternatives for different fitness levels, and planning routines and music as core tasks for exercise trainers and group fitness instructors. The BLS adds that most fitness instructors hold certification in the kind of training they teach, such as yoga.

Keep to the sections below, named the way every resume design prints them:

  • Name, a headline with your styles and designation (for example, Yoga Instructor, E-RYT 200) and contact details
  • 2 or 3 opening lines that sum up your teaching, printed without a heading
  • Work Experience, with each studio, gym or program where you hold a regular class
  • Certificates, with your Yoga Alliance designation listed first
  • Skills, including the booking software you use
  • Education
  • Optional extras: Languages and Interests, plus a Key Achievements block or a Volunteer Experience block (pick one)

Best format for a yoga instructor resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your current studio first, each entry with your title, the studio or gym, its location, and the months you started and left in MM/YYYY form. It shows an owner how long you have held regular slots and how your teaching has grown, from cover classes to a full weekly schedule or a lead role. If you are moving into yoga from another career, keep this order and let your opening lines and Certificates section carry the new direction.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a yoga instructor resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep it to 1 page. Many instructors teach at 2 or 3 places at once, so give each its own entry with overlapping dates instead of folding them into one line, and the owner sees every slot you hold. A 2-page resume makes sense only for a lead instructor or teacher trainer with 10+ years and a training program to describe.

Yoga instructor resume summary vs. objective

Use one test: have you taught a regular weekly class since you finished your teacher training? If you have, write a resume summary of 2 or 3 lines with your designation, years teaching, styles and setting, and your best attendance or program number. If you have not, write a resume objective that names the classes you want to teach and the hours you have taught so far, practice teaching and community classes included.

Yoga instructor resume summary formula

Designation yoga instructor with X years teaching styles at studio, gym or program type. A number from your best class, series or retention figure. Specialty training or next credential.

Example

E-RYT 200 yoga instructor with 7 years teaching vinyasa and yin at a boutique studio and an athletic club. Grew a 6:15 a.m. weekday flow from 5 to 18 regulars in 1 year. Completing a 300-hour advanced training in 2027.

Don't

Passionate and dedicated yoga instructor who loves helping students find balance on and off the mat.

Do

Chair and gentle yoga instructor, RYT 200, with 5 years at a senior center and 2 assisted living communities. Teaches 9 classes a week to groups of 12 to 20, with a chair or wall option for every standing pose.

The second version names the setting, the class load and how the teacher keeps older students safe.

How to write yoga instructor work experience bullets with numbers

Under your current studio, write 3 or 4 bullets; cut roles from long ago to 1 or 2. Your sign-in history, series rosters and pay stubs give you most of the figures. Turn each duty into one of the achievements on your resume by adding the count, the time frame and what changed.

Numbers that prove yoga teaching
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Class loadClasses a week, styles, studiosTaught 9 classes a week in 3 styles across 2 studios.
AttendanceStudents per class, room capacity, waitlistsAveraged 21 students in a 25-mat Saturday class for 8 months.
RetentionStudents who return, series graduates who buy a pack or membershipMoved 23 of 40 beginner series graduates onto class packs or memberships.
Workshops and seriesEvents run, paid sign-ups, repeat runsRan 5 weekend workshops in 2025 with 112 paid sign-ups.
Private and corporate clientsWeekly sessions, contracts, renewalsTaught 2 lunchtime classes a week at a 300-person office, renewed for a second year.
Teacher developmentNew teachers mentored, classes covered, trainings ledMentored 4 newly trained teachers through their first 20 classes each.

Here is one instructor's history with those numbers in place. The current studio gets 3 bullets, each with a count; the athletic club, an older role, gets 2.

Yoga teaching skills and studio software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting, and only ones a bullet of yours already proves. A style belongs in Skills only if you teach it on a schedule; a weekend workshop you attended is training, not a skill.

Hard skills for yoga instructors

  • Vinyasa sequencing
  • Verbal alignment cues
  • Consent-based hands-on assists
  • Pose modifications and props
  • Breathwork (pranayama)
  • Guided meditation
  • Class planning and music
  • Heated room safety
  • Beginner series design
  • Private session programming

Soft skills studio owners value

  • Clear, calm cueing
  • Reading the room
  • Patience with beginners
  • Reliability on the schedule
  • Warmth with new students
  • Respect for boundaries

Put your booking and studio software in Skills too, and name it again in the bullet where you used it. O*NET names scheduling and studio management software, including DaySmart Appointment-Plus and EZFacility, among the tools exercise trainers and group fitness instructors use. If a studio's posting names Mindbody, Momence or Zoom for livestreamed classes and you have used it, write the name exactly as the posting does.

RYT 200, E-RYT and CPR: how to list yoga certifications

List certifications on your resume under Certificates, with your Yoga Alliance designation first, then specialty registrations, then CPR. Most fitness trainers and instructors also need CPR and first aid certification, plus training in automated external defibrillators (AED), per the BLS. Yoga Alliance's designations rest on training hours at a Registered Yoga School (RYS) and, for the experienced levels, on hours taught afterward.

Yoga credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
RYT 200Yoga AllianceA 200-hour training with a single RYS 200; no teaching hours required.
RYT 500Yoga Alliance500 training hours, from one RYS 500 or an RYS 200 plus a 300-hour advanced training, and at least 100 hours taught since training.
E-RYT 200Yoga AllianceA 200-hour RYS training, then 1,000 teaching hours and at least 2 years of teaching after it.
E-RYT 500Yoga Alliance500 training hours, 2,000 teaching hours (500 of them after the advanced training) and at least 4 years of teaching. It allows you to be a lead trainer in a teacher training.
RPYT or RCYTYoga AllianceAn RYT plus an 85-hour prenatal (RPYT) or 95-hour children's (RCYT) training, and 30 teaching hours in that specialty.
Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AEDAmerican Red CrossPass an in-person skills check at the end of the course; the certificate lasts 2 years.

How to write the Yoga Alliance line

Write the designation as Yoga Alliance names it, then the issuer and the month you registered, such as E-RYT 200, Yoga Alliance, 11/2022, and repeat the letters in your headline. If you have finished a training but not registered, list the training by its hours instead, and keep RYT off the page until Yoga Alliance lists you. Its yoga therapy policy also says an RYT on its own does not qualify you to present yourself as a yoga therapist, so leave that title off without a yoga therapy credential.

Sample Certificates section: E-RYT with advanced training in progress

Certificates

  • E-RYT 200, Yoga Alliance, 11/2022
  • 300-hour advanced yoga teacher training (RYS 300), in progress; completion expected 05/2027
  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, American Red Cross, 03/2026

How to list a degree and yoga teacher training

In the BLS description, fitness trainers and instructors typically need a high school diploma to enter the occupation, and O*NET places the job in Job Zone 3, medium preparation. A degree is optional for teaching yoga, though one in kinesiology, exercise science or a related field supports work with athletes and older adults.

When listing education on a resume, give the degree name, the school and its location, and the month you graduated, and place it below Work Experience once you have taught for a year or two. A 200-hour or 300-hour training can sit under Education as well, naming the training school, where it is, the hours and the month you finished, which suits career changers whose training is their newest study.

New teacher and career-change yoga instructor resumes

Fresh out of a 200-hour training, use an entry-level resume layout: an objective, your training near the top, then every hour you have taught since. Give each item the same counts a studio job would get.

  • Practice teaching in your training: classes led and hours logged, listed with the training under Education.
  • Community and donation-based classes: classes a month, the setting (park, library, community center) and average attendance.
  • Substitute classes: how many you covered and at how many studios, as a Work Experience entry.
  • Work-study shifts at a studio: front desk hours and the classes you assisted, under Volunteer Experience.

Don't

Newly certified yoga teacher looking for an opportunity to grow and share my passion.

Do

RYT 200 seeking a beginner and gentle yoga role. Since finishing training in 05/2026, taught 34 community classes at a public library, averaging 11 students, and covered 6 classes at a local studio.

Even a new teacher can put hours taught, a setting and an attendance figure in 2 lines.

Many teachers make a career change into yoga while keeping a day job, so list your current classes as their own entry with Present, even if they run on evenings and weekends. A career-change resume keeps the old jobs to what carries over, such as training new staff, speaking to groups or keeping people safe. Explain why you switched in a cover letter and keep the resume on what you teach now.

Yoga Instructor resume FAQ

Do you need Yoga Alliance registration to be a yoga instructor?

Not for every job, but it is the credential studio owners can check. Most fitness instructors hold certification for the type of training they teach, such as yoga, the BLS reports. Once you are registered, list it first under Certificates.

Can I put RYT on my resume before Yoga Alliance registers me?

No. Write RYT 200 only once Yoga Alliance lists you. Until then, list the training itself by its hours, school and completion month, such as 200-hour yoga teacher training, completed 06/2026, and add the designation when your registration goes through.

How do I list several studios on a yoga instructor resume?

Give each studio or gym its own Work Experience entry, with overlapping dates and Present on every place you still teach. Among your current studios, put the one where you teach the most classes first, and keep a single weekly slot at a gym to 1 or 2 bullets.

Can I call myself a yoga therapist on my resume?

Not with an RYT alone. Yoga Alliance's yoga therapy policy, last updated in November 2021, says registered teachers may not rely solely on their RYT to present themselves as qualified to work as a yoga therapist. Use Yoga Instructor or Yoga Teacher, and name any specialty training under Certificates.

Do yoga instructors need CPR certification?

Usually, yes. The BLS says most fitness trainers and instructors also need CPR and first aid certification, along with AED training. The American Red Cross certificate for Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED is valid for 2 years, so list the month and year you earned it and renew it before it lapses.

Should I list the yoga styles I teach on my resume?

Yes, in 3 places: your headline, your opening lines and the job entries where you teach them. Use the names studios put on their schedules, such as power, yin, hot or restorative, and list only styles you teach regularly, not ones you have practiced in a workshop.

Do you need a degree to be a yoga instructor?

No. The BLS says fitness trainers and instructors typically need a high school diploma to enter the occupation, so your teacher training and teaching hours carry most of the weight. A degree in kinesiology or exercise science still helps with athletes and older adults; list it under Education with the school and year.

Should I include my pay rate on a yoga instructor resume?

No. Leave per-class rates and salary for the interview. For a benchmark, the BLS reports that the median annual wage for fitness trainers and instructors, the occupation that covers yoga instructors, was $47,160 in May 2025; your own rate will depend on your city, setting and class load.
