17 Teacher Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Principals check which grades and subjects you are licensed for, what classes you have taught and whether your students grew. Use these examples and the guide below to show each of those clearly, from student teaching to your first National Board component.

Teacher resume example

A principal reading your resume wants to picture you in front of their students. That means the grades and subjects you have taught, how you manage a classroom, how you work with families, and what your students learned with you. The hard part is that much of good teaching never turns into a number. Below, you'll see how to put your classroom work into clear, specific results.

How to Write a Teacher Resume - Key Takeaways

  • List your schools newest first (reverse-chronological) and keep to 1 page, or 2 once you have 10+ years with coaching or leadership work.
  • Write the grade or subject into every job title and open each job with the class: size, grade, English learners and IEPs.
  • Give bullets a number your school already tracks, such as benchmark growth, state test proficiency, attendance or family conferences.
  • List your state teaching license first under Certificates, with its endorsements, the issuing agency and the month it was issued.
  • Keep student results anonymous: counts and percentages for a class or group, never a name or a single child's score.
  • Run the file through an ATS resume checker, because district hiring portals search for license, endorsement and subject keywords.

What principals look for in a teacher resume

Most teacher resumes go first to a district HR screener, who checks the license, and then to a principal, who asks whether you can run their classroom from the first week. The BLS lists creating lesson plans, observing students to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses, communicating with parents about progress and preparing students for state tests as core duties. O*NET adds adapting teaching methods and materials to students' varying needs. Your bullets should show those duties with a grade, a class size and a result.

Build the resume from these sections, named the way district portals expect:

  • Name, headline (for example, Grade 4 Teacher, ESL Endorsed) and contact details
  • A short summary or objective at the top; it needs no heading of its own
  • Work Experience, newest school first, with the grade or subject in each title
  • Certificates: the state teaching license and its endorsements first, then everything else
  • Skills, with the classroom technology you use
  • Education, including student teaching if you graduated in the last 2 years
  • Optional: Key Achievements, Volunteer Experience or Languages

Best format for a teacher resume

Pick the reverse-chronological resume format: your current school first, then each earlier one, with the title, the school and its city, and the dates as MM/YYYY. Teaching careers are read school year by school year, and this order shows the grades and subjects you have taught and any step toward mentor, lead or department chair roles. Long-term substitute positions get their own entries; short daily assignments fold into 1 entry.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a teacher resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Fit it on 1 page for your first 10 years in the classroom. A second page earns its place once you have coached colleagues, led a department, written curriculum for a district or taught across several grade bands, provided page 1 still shows your license and your current class.

Teacher resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 after 10+ years with coaching, leadership or curriculum work
Job title lineGrade or subject plus the role: Grade 4 Teacher, or Chemistry Teacher, Grades 10 to 12
License lineLicense type, state, endorsements, issuing agency and the month issued
DatesMM/YYYY for each school; a school year can read 08/2024 – 06/2025
TypefaceOne clean font such as Calibri or Arial, 10.5 to 12 pt in the body
Photo and personal detailsUsually no photo in the US and Canada; leave off your birth date, marital status and Social Security number

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. District portals often copy your resume into an online application, so plain headings and a single PDF survive that step better than text boxes or graphics.

Teacher resume summary vs. objective

If you have held your own classroom, write a resume summary with your grade or subject, your years, your license and 1 result. If you are about to graduate, finishing an alternative route or moving into teaching from another field, write a resume objective that names the grade band you want, your license status and your strongest classroom hours. Either way, 2 to 3 lines are enough.

Teacher resume summary formula

Grade or subject teacher with X years in school type or setting, license and endorsements. 1 result with a number. The next credential or role you are working toward.

Example

Grade 4 teacher with 6 years in public elementary classrooms, licensed in Illinois with an ESL endorsement. In the first year of a new math curriculum, 20 of 26 students met the spring benchmark. National Board candidate, with certification expected in 2027.

Don't

Passionate, dedicated educator committed to helping every child reach their full potential.

Do

Grade 7 science teacher with 4 years at a Title I middle school, teaching 5 sections of about 28 students. Built a lab rotation that took classes from 2 hands-on labs a month to 6.

Every teacher is dedicated; the rewrite shows the grade, the load and something the students did.

How to write teaching bullets with student results

Give your current school 3 to 4 bullets and older schools 1 to 3. Start with the class line, then move to results your school already measures: benchmark growth, state test proficiency, attendance, behavior referrals or family engagement. Teaching outcomes rarely belong to 1 person, so say what you did that moved the number, which is the core of writing achievements on a resume.

Numbers that prove teaching work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Class loadSections, students, grade levels, IEPs and 504 plansTeach 5 sections of high school biology, 142 students in all, 11 with IEPs or 504 plans.
Reading and math growthBenchmark levels, growth targets, intervention groupsMoved 9 of 14 intervention students up at least 1 reading level by the winter benchmark.
State testsProficiency rate, change over 1 to 3 yearsRaised the share of 8th graders scoring proficient on the state math test from 41% to 53% in 2 years.
Attendance and behaviorChronic absence, referrals, suspensionsCut chronic absence in a homeroom of 24 from 7 students to 3 with weekly family check-ins.
FamiliesConference turnout, contacts per term, translated notesHeld conferences with 58 of 60 families across 2 sections in the fall.
LeadershipStudent teachers mentored, committees, PD sessions ledMentored 2 student teachers and led 3 after-school PD sessions on small-group math.

In this grade 4 entry the class line comes first, each bullet names what the teacher changed, and the earlier school gets a single line.

Teaching skills and classroom technology for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that the posting asks for and your bullets prove. Differentiated instruction and classroom management belong on almost every teacher resume; co-teaching, IEP goal writing or lab safety only where you have done them.

Hard skills for teachers

  • Lesson and unit planning
  • Differentiated instruction
  • Classroom management
  • Formative and summative assessment
  • Guided reading and small-group instruction
  • Data-driven instruction
  • IEP and 504 plan implementation
  • Co-teaching
  • Supports for English learners
  • State standards alignment

Soft skills principals value

  • Patience
  • Clear explanations
  • Relationships with families
  • Collaboration with grade-level teams
  • Calm de-escalation
  • Flexibility when plans change

List your classroom technology with your skills, then name each tool again in a bullet that shows what you did with it. Name your learning management system and your benchmark tool, such as MAP Growth, i-Ready or DIBELS, exactly as your district writes them.

How to list a teaching license, endorsements and National Board Certification

The BLS states that all states require public school teachers to be licensed or certified for the specific grade level they teach, while private school teachers typically do not need a license. A license usually takes a bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA, student teaching, a background check and a general teaching test plus a subject test, and teachers often must complete professional development to keep it. Put your certifications on your resume under Certificates, with the license first and each endorsement spelled the way your state spells it.

Teaching credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
State teaching license or certificateYour state's education agency or standards boardRequirements vary by state; the BLS lists a bachelor's degree, student teaching, a background check and licensing tests.
Professional Educator License (PEL), IllinoisIllinois State Board of Education (ISBE)Carries at least 1 endorsement, such as Elementary Education Grades 1-6; renewed every 5 years, with 120 hours of professional development for teachers in Illinois public schools.
Standard Certificate, TexasTexas Education Agency (TEA)Valid for 5 years; a classroom teacher completes 150 hours of continuing professional education to renew.
Praxis testsETSEach state chooses which tests it requires, such as Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5001).
National Board CertificationNational Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)A bachelor's degree, a valid state license and 3 years of teaching; 4 components, all completed within the first 3 years of candidacy.

Listing a license that is pending, out of state or in progress

If your license is still being processed, list it with the word pending and the month you applied, and put the tests you have passed underneath. A license from another state stays on the resume with its own state and agency, plus 1 line on the license you have applied for here. National Board work in progress goes under Certificates as candidacy with the components you have submitted, never as a finished credential.

Sample Certificates section: Illinois license, endorsement and National Board candidacy

Certificates

  • Professional Educator License (PEL), Elementary Education Grades 1-6, Illinois State Board of Education, 12/2019
  • English as a Second Language endorsement, Illinois State Board of Education, 05/2024
  • National Board Certification, Generalist/Middle Childhood, NBPTS, candidate; components 1 and 2 submitted, certification expected in 2027

How to list your education degree and student teaching

According to the BLS, public elementary teachers typically need a bachelor's degree in elementary education, and graduates with another major must complete a teacher education program to be certified. Many states require high school teachers to have majored in a content area, such as mathematics or science, so a chemistry or history teacher should name that major in full. Some states also require a master's degree after you are certified and hired, so list a master's in progress with its expected date.

Use the standard layout for listing education on a resume: degree, major, school, city and graduation date. In your first 2 years, add student teaching under the degree with its grade and length, plus your GPA if it is 3.5 or higher or the posting asks for it. After those 2 years, cut the entry back to the degree, school and date.

Sample education entry: new teacher with student teaching

Education

Bachelor of Science in Education, Elementary Education12/2019
Illinois State University | Normal, IL

GPA 3.6. Student teaching: 16 weeks in a grade 3 classroom, fall 2019.

First-year and career-change teacher resumes

Without a classroom of your own yet, use the first-year teacher resume layout: an objective, then Education with student teaching near the top, then any work with children. Count everything the way a full-time job would be counted.

  • Student teaching: the grade, the length in weeks, the class size and the units you planned and taught alone.
  • Substitute or paraprofessional work: a Work Experience entry with the number of schools, days or long-term assignments.
  • Tutoring and after-school programs: students served, sessions a week and any growth you measured.
  • Camps, coaching and youth ministry: Work Experience if paid, Volunteer Experience if not, with group sizes and ages.

Don't

Recent graduate seeking a teaching position where I can make a difference in students' lives.

Do

Elementary education graduate with a state teaching license issued 06/2026, seeking a grade 1 to 3 classroom. Completed 14 weeks of student teaching in a grade 1 class of 21 and 2 summers as a reading camp counselor.

An objective still needs evidence: a license date, a grade band and a count of hours or weeks.

If you are moving into teaching from another career, the BLS notes that all states offer an alternative route for people who already hold a bachelor's degree, and some let you teach under an experienced teacher while you finish. Keep reverse-chronological order, lead with the license or program you are in, and keep the older bullets that carry over: training adults, presenting, or the subject itself, such as lab work for a future chemistry teacher. The career-change resume examples show the layout, and the cover letter explains the move; these elementary teacher cover letter examples show how to fit it into a few lines.

Teacher resume FAQ

Should I put my teaching license number on my resume?

No. Give the license type, the state, your endorsements, the issuing agency and the month it was issued. The district can confirm the rest with the state, and leaving the number off keeps it out of every system your file passes through.

How do I list a teaching license that is still pending?

List it under Certificates with the word pending and the month you applied, then the licensing tests you have passed with their dates. Repeat the status in your objective, such as license pending, expected 01/2027, so a screener does not have to guess.

How long should a teacher resume be?

1 page for new teachers and most classroom teachers. A second page fits after 10+ years if you have coached teachers, led a department or written curriculum, as long as page 1 carries your license and your current position.

Should I include student teaching on my resume?

Yes, for your first 2 years after graduating. Put it under Education, or as its own entry if you planned and taught full units, with the grade, the length in weeks and the class size. Drop it after that.

How do I show student results without sharing student data?

Report results for a class, a section or a group: 17 of 26 students met their growth target, or proficiency rose from 41% to 53%. If your class is small enough that a number could point to one child, use a figure for the grade level or the program instead.

Do I need National Board Certification to get hired?

No. A public school hiring screen checks your state license. National Board Certification from NBPTS is open to teachers with a bachelor's degree, a valid state license and 3 years of teaching. If you hold it, put it under Certificates with its certificate area and year; if you are a candidate, list the components you have submitted.

How do I write a teacher resume for a career change?

Lead with your alternative certification program or license status, then keep your earlier jobs in reverse-chronological order with the bullets that transfer: teaching or training others, presenting, and work in the subject you will teach. A short objective names the grade band and subject you want.

Should I list substitute teaching on a teacher resume?

Yes. Group daily substitute work into 1 entry with the district, the dates and the number of schools or days. Give a long-term assignment its own entry with the grade, the subject and the weeks you covered, since that is the closest thing to your own classroom.

How do I show online or hybrid teaching on a resume?

Keep it inside the job where it happened and add 1 bullet with the format, the platform and the numbers, such as a hybrid schedule for a class of 22 in Google Classroom. A full-time virtual school gets its own entry, with online in the job title line.

What is the average teacher salary?

The BLS reports that the median annual wage was $63,970 for elementary school teachers, except special education, and $72,040 for high school teachers in May 2025. Pay depends on your state, your district's salary schedule and your degree.
