Teacher Assistant resume example

Teacher assistants support students in small groups, one-on-one and across the school day, always alongside a lead teacher. Principals and the teachers you would assist want to know which grades you have worked with, how you run a group, how you handle behavior and how well you take direction. Since most of your work follows someone else's lesson plan, your own results often go unmentioned. A strong resume makes your part in student progress clear.

How to Write a Teacher Assistant Resume - Key Takeaways

  • List jobs newest first (reverse-chronological) on 1 page, with the grade, subject or program in every job title line.
  • Open each job with who you supported: the grade, the class size and the small groups you ran.
  • Give bullets a number a lead teacher tracks, such as benchmark results, reading fluency, tutoring minutes or behavior referrals.
  • List the ParaPro Assessment or your state's aide certificate first under Certificates, then first aid and CPR, each with its issuer and month.
  • Describe students in groups and counts, and leave names, diagnoses and IEP details off the page.
  • Test the file with an ATS resume checker before you upload it to a district hiring portal, since those systems search for titles and certificates.

What schools look for in a teacher assistant resume

A teacher assistant resume is often read twice: by district HR, which checks that you meet the qualifications for the role, and by the principal and the teacher you would work beside, who want to know you can take direction and still work with students on your own. The BLS lists reinforcing lessons one-on-one or in small groups, helping with recordkeeping such as attendance and grades, getting materials ready and supervising students at lunch, at recess and on field trips as typical duties. O*NET adds teaching social skills and presenting lessons under a teacher's direction. Show those duties with a grade level, a group size and an outcome.

Give the resume these sections, under the standard headings a district portal reads:

  • Name, contact details and a headline like Teacher Assistant, Grades K-2
  • A profile of 2 or 3 lines under your name, which prints without a section heading
  • Work Experience, newest first, with the grade, subject or program in each title
  • Skills, including the classroom software you use
  • Certificates: the ParaPro Assessment or your state's aide certificate, then first aid and CPR
  • Education, with college credits if you have not finished a degree
  • Optional: Languages, Volunteer Experience or Key Achievements

Best format for a teacher assistant resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: newest job first, each with your title, the school, its city, and start and end dates as MM/YYYY. School years make a teacher assistant's history easy to follow, and this order shows a principal at once how close your latest grade level is to theirs. If you are moving into schools from another line of work, keep this order as well and let your profile and skills carry the change.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a teacher assistant resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep it to 1 page. Even after 10 years in classrooms, older jobs can drop to 1 bullet each before a second page makes sense. If you held 2 roles at one school, such as kindergarten aide and then reading assistant, give each title its own entry with its own dates.

Teacher Assistant resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page at every career stage
Job title lineTitle plus grade, subject or program: Teacher Assistant, Grade 1, or Teacher Assistant, Art
DatesMonth and year (MM/YYYY) for start and end, with Present for the role you are in
FontOne readable font, 10.5 to 12 pt, used the same way throughout
Private detailsLeave off your SSN, marital status and date of birth
File typePDF, or Word when the district portal asks for it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Many districts take applications through an online portal that copies your resume into its own form fields, so standard headings and plain dates help each detail land where a screener expects it.

Teacher assistant resume summary vs. objective

Use one test: if you have worked in a school for at least a full school year, write a resume summary with your years, your grade levels and 1 result. If you are new to classrooms, write a resume objective naming the grade or program you want and the evidence you bring, such as college credits, a passed ParaPro or years of coaching children. Either way, 2 or 3 lines are enough.

Teacher assistant resume summary formula

Title with X years supporting grade levels, subject or program. Your strongest small-group, reading or behavior result, counted. Qualification or language that fits the posting.

Example

Instructional paraprofessional with 7 years in kindergarten to grade 3, now at a Title I elementary school. Led a daily social skills group for 6 students that cut recess incidents from 21 to 8 over a school year. Holds an associate degree and speaks English and Spanish.

Don't

Caring and patient teacher assistant who loves helping children learn and grow.

Do

Teacher assistant with 4 years in middle school math, supporting 5 class periods a day and co-running a 30-minute intervention block for 18 students. ParaPro passed; First Aid/CPR/AED current.

This version names the subject, the load and the qualifications a screener checks.

How to write teacher assistant work experience bullets with numbers

Write 3 to 4 bullets under your current job and 1 to 3 under each earlier one. Start with who you worked with: the grade, the class size and the groups you ran. Then add results the school already measures, such as benchmark scores, attendance or behavior referrals, and make clear which part was yours. Keep each entry to the standard layout for listing work experience on a resume, then add the classroom numbers below.

Numbers that prove teacher assistant work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Small-group instructionGroups a day, students per group, minutes, growthTaught 3 math intervention groups of 4 students for 25 minutes a day, 4 days a week.
Reading supportFluency, benchmark levels, books readRan repeated-reading sessions that raised a group's average fluency from 58 to 81 words a minute between fall and spring.
Behavior and social skillsReferrals, incidents, daily check-insHeld daily check-ins with 5 students on behavior plans; office referrals for the group fell from 19 in fall to 7 in spring.
SupervisionStudents supervised, duty areas, field tripsSupervised lunch and recess for 140 second and third graders 5 days a week.
Records and materialsAttendance, grading, materials preparedGraded weekly spelling checks for 26 students and posted the scores to Google Classroom.
Family contactFamilies reached, languages, conferencesWrote notes home in Spanish for 9 families each quarter and sat in on their conferences.

In a middle or high school, name the department or course in the title line and count class periods instead of groups. An art room assistant can count the students in each class, the media taught and the pieces prepared for a show.

The entry below puts those numbers to work for a paraprofessional in a Title I school: the setting first, the results after, and a shorter older job.

Sample entry: instructional paraprofessional in grades 2 and 3

Name the group, how often you met and what changed.

Do

Supervised recess for 3 first-grade classes, about 70 students, and logged every playground incident for the office the same day.

Teacher assistant skills and classroom software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 skills from the posting and keep only those a bullet proves. Small-group instruction and classroom management fit almost every aide job; behavior support, reading intervention or bilingual family contact only if the role includes them. The BLS names communication, interpersonal skills, patience and resourcefulness as important qualities for teacher assistants, so show those soft skills through what you did rather than as a list of adjectives.

Hard skills for teacher assistants

  • Small-group instruction
  • One-on-one tutoring
  • Reading and phonics support
  • Math intervention
  • Classroom management
  • Behavior support plans
  • Student supervision
  • Attendance and recordkeeping
  • Lesson material preparation
  • Progress monitoring

Soft skills lead teachers value

  • Patience
  • Clear communication with families
  • Following the teacher's plan
  • Resourcefulness
  • Calm with upset students
  • Teamwork in a shared classroom

List the software you use with your skills and show it at work in a bullet. O*NET flags Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, as hot technologies for teaching assistants, and names Google Classroom, Google Meet, ClassDojo and Blackboard among the software in the job. Add your district's student information system or reading program only by its exact name, and only when a bullet shows you using it.

ParaPro, state aide certificates and CPR on a teacher assistant resume

A district's first screen checks qualifications before experience. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says teacher assistants in public schools need at least 2 years of college coursework or an associate's degree, and Title I schools accept a 2-year degree, 2 years of college or a passing score on a state or local assessment. ETS's ParaPro Assessment, which tests reading, writing and math and how you apply them while assisting in classroom instruction, is required for certification in many states. Give each one its issuer and the month you earned it when you list certifications on your resume.

Teacher assistant certificates and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
ParaPro AssessmentETSA test of reading, writing and math and how you use them in the classroom; each state sets its own qualifying score.
Initial TA Certificate (New York)New York State Education DepartmentA diploma (high school or GED), a passing score on the Foundations of Classroom Support and Instruction or ATAS exam, the required workshops and fingerprint clearance; valid for 5 years.
Educational Aide I (Texas)Texas Education AgencyHigh school completion or its equivalent, plus experience with students or parents approved by the superintendent; issued only through a Texas district job and valid for 2 years.
Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AEDAmerican Red CrossA first aid and CPR course for adults and children; some teacher assistant jobs require CPR and first aid, per the BLS.

How to list the ParaPro and New York's new TA titles

Write the ParaPro Assessment as passed, with the month, and leave the score off unless a job ad requests it. New York changed its teaching assistant certificates in 2025: from 10/2025, new applicants receive the Initial TA Certificate, and the Level I, II and III titles are being phased out. Write a certificate you already hold under the name printed on it, so a Level III holder keeps Level III.

Sample Certificates section: ParaPro and first aid

Certificates

  • ParaPro Assessment, ETS, passed 07/2019
  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, American Red Cross, 08/2025

How to list college credits or an associate degree

Because public school aide jobs so often ask for 2 years of college or an associate's degree, your Education section can decide whether you pass the first screen. If you have credits but no degree, list the college, your field of study and the number of credits completed. When listing education on a resume, give the degree or program, the school, its city and the date.

Add your high school only when it is your highest qualification. Coursework in child development or early literacy and any classroom observation hours fit in 1 line under the degree. Include a GPA only as a recent graduate, and only at 3.5 or above.

Sample education entry: associate degree

Education

Associate of Arts (AA)05/2019
Butler Community College | El Dorado, KS

Coursework in child development and children's literature; 30 hours of classroom observation in grade 1.

Teacher assistant resumes with no experience or a career change

With no school job yet, lead with an objective, your education or college credits and the qualification the district asks for. Then give any regular work with children a full entry, with their ages, the group size and how long you did it. The entry-level resume layout suits you if your strongest evidence is still school or part-time work.

  • Childcare, camp or after-school jobs: a Work Experience entry with the ages and number of children in your care.
  • Tutoring or youth coaching: the students or players, sessions a week and a result, such as a grade raised or a season finished.
  • Classroom volunteering or field placements: under Volunteer Experience, with the grade and your hours.
  • Babysitting or nanny work: a full entry if it ran for a year or more, with the children's ages.
  • A second language: under Languages, with your level, since it lets you help with family contact.

Don't

Hardworking individual seeking a teacher assistant position where I can make a difference in children's lives.

Do

Teacher assistant candidate with 45 college credits in education and 2 summers as a day camp counselor for groups of 12 children, seeking a kindergarten or grade 1 classroom. ParaPro Assessment scheduled for 11/2026.

The rewrite names the grade wanted, the evidence and the next step.

Coming from another field, such as restaurants, retail or office work, stay with reverse-chronological order, and put your school job or qualification first. Under older jobs, keep the bullets that carry into a classroom: training new staff, calming upset customers, or keeping records accurate at volume. Our career-change resume examples show the layout, and the cover letter is where you explain the move, as these teacher assistant cover letter examples do in a short paragraph.

Teacher Assistant resume FAQ

Is a teacher assistant the same as a paraprofessional?

Mostly, yes. O*NET lists paraprofessional, paraeducator, instructional assistant and teacher aide among the other titles for this job. Write the title your school used in each job line, and if a posting uses a different one, put that term in your headline.

Do you need a degree to be a teacher assistant?

Not always. The BLS says teacher assistants in public schools need at least 2 years of college coursework or an associate's degree, and that Title I schools accept a 2-year degree, 2 years of college or a passing state or local assessment such as the ParaPro. Outside public schools, the posting sets the bar.

Should I put my ParaPro score on my resume?

Only when a job ad requests it. Write ParaPro Assessment, ETS and the month you passed under Certificates. Each state sets its own qualifying score, so a district that needs the number will ask for your official score report.

How do I write a teacher assistant resume with no experience?

Open with an objective naming the grade you want and your best evidence, then list your college credits and any qualification test. Give childcare, tutoring, coaching or camp work full entries with the children's ages and group sizes, and put classroom volunteering under Volunteer Experience with its hours.

What skills should a teacher assistant put on a resume?

Choose 6 to 8 that the posting names and your bullets prove. Small-group instruction, reading or math support, classroom management, supervision and recordkeeping are the usual core; add the software you use, such as Google Classroom or Microsoft Excel, by its exact name.

How long should a teacher assistant resume be?

1 page. A long classroom career still fits when older jobs keep 1 or 2 bullets and only the last 10 to 15 years get full detail. A second page usually means the same duties are repeated from one school year to the next.

Can I list babysitting or nanny work on a teacher assistant resume?

Yes, if it was regular work. A nanny or babysitting job of a year or more gets its own Work Experience entry with the children's ages, how many you cared for and what you did each day, such as homework help or reading routines.

How do I list a New York teaching assistant certificate?

Write it as NYSED issued it, with the month. For applications from 10/2025 that is the Initial TA Certificate; NYSED is phasing out the Level I, II and III titles, but a certificate you already hold keeps the name printed on it, such as Teaching Assistant Level III.

Should I mention students with IEPs on my resume?

Yes, as a group and never as individuals. Write how many students with IEPs or behavior plans you supported and the setting, such as 4 students with IEPs in a grade 5 inclusion class, and leave out names, diagnoses and anything that could identify a child.

What is the average teacher assistant salary?

In May 2025, the BLS put the median wage for teacher assistants at $36,780 a year. Pay varies with the district, the hours in your contract and your qualifications, so leave it off the resume and raise it once a school makes an offer.
