Special Ed Teacher resume example

Special education runs on one written plan per student, and the teacher writes it, teaches to it and rewrites it when a student stalls. Every applicant for the job has written IEPs, so a principal comparing resumes goes past the paperwork to the setting you taught in, the grades and disability categories, how many students you carried and how you worked with families and aides. The strongest proof is the distance your students covered: goals met, reading levels gained and more of the day spent in general education classes.

How to Write a Special Ed Teacher Resume - Key Takeaways

  • List jobs newest first (reverse-chronological) and keep to 1 page; move to 2 after 10+ years or once you hold lead, coaching or district roles.
  • Put the setting and grade band in each job title line, and open each job with your caseload and the disability categories you served.
  • Give bullets numbers a special education director already tracks: IEP goals met, reviews held on time, benchmark growth, behavior incidents and students moved to less restrictive settings.
  • List your state certificate first under Certificates, named exactly as the state issued it, then crisis, behavior or National Board credentials.
  • Describe students as a caseload or a group, never by name and never with a diagnosis tied to one child.
  • Test the file in an ATS resume checker before you upload it, since district systems search for certificate names and terms such as IEP and co-teaching.

What principals look for in a special education teacher resume

A principal or special education director reads your resume with 3 questions in mind: are you certified for this grade band, have you taught in a setting like theirs, and did your students make progress. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists developing an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student, tracking progress against it and discussing that progress with parents and staff as core duties, along with supervising teacher assistants. O*NET adds modifying the general curriculum, teaching behavior through positive reinforcement and coordinating students' placement into mainstream classes.

Turn each of those duties into a bullet that carries a number. Set the resume up in these sections, with headings a district's applicant tracking system reads cleanly:

  • Name, headline (for example, Special Education Teacher, K-12 Certified) and contact details
  • A 2 to 3 line profile at the top, which needs no heading of its own
  • Work Experience, newest school first, with the setting and grades in each job title
  • Certificates: your state certificate first, then crisis, behavior or National Board credentials
  • Skills, with the IEP and assessment software you use
  • Education, with student teaching for newer teachers
  • Optional extras: Languages, such as American Sign Language or Spanish, plus one of Volunteer Experience and Key Achievements

Best format for a special education teacher resume

Go with the reverse-chronological resume format: your current school first, then each earlier one with its city and dates in MM/YYYY form. Special education careers move between settings, from inclusion to resource to self-contained or behavior classrooms, so newest-first order tells a principal which settings you know best. If you moved between settings at one school, give each setting its own title line and dates, so a principal sees how long you taught in each.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a special ed teacher resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

One page covers most classroom teachers in their first decade. A second page makes sense once you have 10+ years, a lead or department chair role, or district work such as coaching other teachers, as long as your certificate and current classroom stay on page 1.

SettingWhat to use
Length1 page, or 2 after 10+ years or with lead and coaching roles
DatesMM/YYYY that follow the school year, such as 08/2022 – 05/2025, with Present for your current post
Job title lineRole, setting and grades: Special Education Teacher, Resource (Grades 6 to 8)

FontArial, Calibri or another clean sans serif, sized 10.5 to 12 pt

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Many districts ask you to retype your history into their own application form as well, so keep job titles and dates on the file identical to what you enter there.

Special education teacher resume summary vs. objective

Once you have led your own classroom or caseload, write a resume summary with your years, grade band, settings, the disabilities you serve and 1 result. Still in your preparation program, or moving over from a paraprofessional or general education job? Write a resume objective naming the setting you want, your certification status and your closest hands-on experience. Either way, write it last and lift its number from a bullet below.

Special ed teacher resume summary formula

Title with X years in grade band and setting, serving students with disability categories. 1 measured result for students or IEP deadlines. Certificate, plus any training or credential in progress.

Example

Special education teacher with 9 years in grades 3 to 5 resource and inclusion classrooms, serving students with learning disabilities, ADHD and autism. Held every annual IEP review on or before its due date for 4 school years running. Certified in Special Education EC-12 in Texas and trained in CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention.

Don't

Dedicated and patient special education teacher passionate about helping every student reach their full potential.

Do

Resource teacher with 4 years in middle school math intervention and a caseload of 18 students. 11 of them reached grade-level math benchmarks in 2025-26. State certified in special education, K to 12.

Setting, caseload and a checkable result do the work here.

How to write special education bullets with numbers

Your current classroom gets 3 to 4 bullets; earlier schools get 2 to 4 each. Open with the caseload, the grades and the disabilities you served, because every later number reads against that base. Then pick results your school already records in IEP progress reports, benchmark tests and behavior logs, and follow the general advice on how to list work experience on a resume for the order of each entry.

Numbers that prove special education work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Caseload and serviceStudents, grades, disability categories, minutes of instructionTaught 12 students in grades K to 2 in a resource room, delivering 45 minutes of daily reading intervention.
IEP complianceAnnual reviews, reevaluations, deadlines metLed 19 annual IEP meetings in the 2024-25 school year and closed every review before its due date.
Student progressGoals met, reading levels, benchmark scoresMoved 7 of 10 students up at least 1 reading level between fall and spring benchmarks.
BehaviorOffice referrals, incidents, time on taskCut office referrals for a class of 9 students from 31 to 12 in a school year with a daily point sheet.
InclusionStudents moved to less restrictive settings, co-taught classesTransitioned 4 students from a self-contained class into general education math within 1 year.
Team leadershipAides supervised, teachers trained, families reachedSupervised 3 paraprofessionals and ran monthly training on prompting and data collection.

Federal rules set the rhythm behind many of these figures: an IEP is reviewed at least once a year, and a student is reevaluated at least once every 3 years. Count both, and show the result for students rather than only the paperwork, as this entry does.

Sample entry: resource room teacher at an elementary school

Special education skills and software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting, and keep only the ones a bullet above already proves. IEP writing and progress monitoring fit almost every special education resume; sign language, braille or behavior plans only when your classroom used them.

Hard skills for special education teachers

  • IEP writing and annual reviews
  • Progress monitoring
  • Curriculum modification
  • Positive behavior supports
  • Behavior data collection
  • Multisensory reading instruction
  • Co-teaching
  • Assistive technology
  • Small-group and 1:1 instruction
  • Transition planning

Soft skills special education directors value

  • Patience with gradual progress
  • Clear communication with families
  • Calm de-escalation
  • Teamwork with aides and therapists
  • Organization across IEP deadlines
  • Advocacy for students

List your software with your skills, then prove it in a bullet. O*NET names IEP software, EasyCBM, Rethink Ed, and speech tools such as Nuance Dragon NaturallySpeaking and goQ WordQ among the technology special education teachers use, and flags Microsoft Office as a hot technology for the job. Write your district's IEP system by its exact product name, since a posting that names it will be searched for that name.

How to list a special education certificate and other credentials

The BLS states that all states require public school teachers to be licensed for the grade level they teach, while private school teachers typically do not need a license. Special education adds a subject area to that license, and each state names it its own way. List certifications on your resume in this order: the state certificate first, then the training and credentials that fit the posting.

Special education credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
State special education certificate or licenseYour state's education agencyA bachelor's degree plus an approved preparation program or an alternative route, and the state's required exams.
Special Education Specialist EC-12 (Texas)Texas Education AgencyThe 186 exam, which launched on September 2, 2025 and replaced the 161 Special Education EC-12 exam.
Praxis Special Education: Foundational Knowledge (5355)ETSA Praxis test; your state's licensure page says whether it is required and which score passes.
National Board Certification, Exceptional Needs SpecialistNational Board for Professional Teaching StandardsA bachelor's degree, a valid state license, 3 years of teaching, and 4 components: 3 portfolio entries and a computer-based assessment.
Nonviolent Crisis InterventionCrisis Prevention Institute (CPI)A training course with renewal training every 2 years to keep it active.
Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA)Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB)A graduate-level certification for behavior specialist roles; check the BACB handbook, since its requirements change in 2027.

When your certificate's name has changed

Write the certificate exactly as it was issued, even when the state has since renamed it. Texas is a current case: TEA moved candidates to the new Special Education Specialist EC-12 exam in September 2025 and calls it a new certification area, so a teacher certified in 2017 holds Special Education EC-12 and should write that. Add the issuing agency and the month, and leave the certificate number off.

Sample Certificates section: state certificate, crisis training and National Board in progress

Certificates

  • Special Education EC-12, Texas Education Agency, 06/2017
  • Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), renewed 08/2025
  • National Board Certification, Exceptional Needs Specialist, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, in progress

How to list a special education degree and student teaching

The BLS says every state requires public school special education teachers to hold at least a bachelor's degree, and preparation programs typically include student teaching. Some states also require a master's degree for full certification, so a master's in progress belongs on your resume with its expected date.

When listing education on a resume, give the degree name, the school and its city, and the month you graduated. In your first 3 years of teaching, add 1 line on student teaching with its grades and setting, and a GPA of 3.5 or higher if you have one; after that, the degree line is enough.

Sample education entry: degree with special education certification

Education

BS, Interdisciplinary Studies (EC-6 Generalist and EC-12 Special Education)05/2017
Sam Houston State University | Huntsville, TX

GPA 3.6. Student teaching: 1 semester split between a 4th grade classroom and a resource room.

First-year and career-change special education teacher resumes

A first-year teacher's resume rests on student teaching and any work with students who have IEPs. Open with an objective stating the setting and grades you want and where your certificate stands, then give student teaching a full entry. The first-year teacher resume examples show how much space each part takes.

  • Student teaching: a full Work Experience entry with the grades, the setting and the number of students you taught.
  • Paraprofessional or aide work: its own entry with the students you supported and the IEP goals you collected data on.
  • Behavior technician or tutoring jobs: sessions a week and the skills you taught, with any behavior plan you followed.
  • Special Olympics, camps or respite care: under Volunteer Experience, with hours and the ages you worked with.

Don't

Recent graduate seeking a special education teaching position where I can make a difference.

Do

Special education graduate seeking a resource or inclusion role in grades K to 5. Completed 14 weeks of student teaching in a co-taught 2nd grade class after 2 years as a paraprofessional, and passed the Texas Special Education Specialist EC-12 exam in 09/2026.

Even without a classroom of your own, give a setting, a count of weeks and a certification step.

The BLS points out that every state offers an alternative route to certification for people who already hold a bachelor's degree, which is how many paraprofessionals and career changers enter the job. Keep reverse-chronological order, put the alternative certification program under Education, and keep older bullets that carry over to a classroom: training adults, documenting progress, or working with people under stress. The career-change resume examples show the layout, and a short cover letter is where you explain the move in 2 or 3 sentences.

Special Ed Teacher resume FAQ

How do I describe students with disabilities on my resume without breaking privacy?

Write about caseloads and groups, never individuals. Name the disability categories you served and the counts, such as 14 students with autism and intellectual disabilities, and leave out names, initials, photos and any detail that would let a reader identify one child.

How do I show IEP experience on a special education resume?

Give it a number. Count the IEPs you case-managed, the annual meetings you led, how many were on time, and how many goals students met. Federal rules require an IEP review at least once a year, so a principal reads a review record as a sign of how you handle deadlines.

How long should a special education teacher resume be?

1 page for most classroom teachers, including those with several settings behind them. Use 2 pages after 10+ years or once you add lead teacher, coaching or district roles, and keep your certificate and current classroom on page 1.

Can I apply for special education jobs before my certificate is issued?

Yes, as long as your resume states where you are in the process. List the certificate under Certificates with the exam you passed or scheduled and its month, and say in your objective when you expect the certificate, since most public schools need a certificate, or an intern or provisional license, before you lead a classroom.

Do I need a master's degree to teach special education?

Not to start. The BLS says all states require a bachelor's degree for special education teachers in public schools, and some states require a master's degree for full certification. If yours does, list the master's with its expected date.

Should I put CPI or crisis intervention training on my resume?

Yes, when the posting mentions behavior, crisis training or a self-contained setting. List it under Certificates by its full name, such as Nonviolent Crisis Intervention from the Crisis Prevention Institute, with the month you last renewed it, since CPI requires renewal every 2 years.

How do I move from paraprofessional to special education teacher on a resume?

Lead with your new certificate or the program you are in, then list your paraprofessional job as a full entry. Keep bullets that show teaching, such as small groups you ran, IEP data you collected and behavior plans you carried out, with the number of students each time.

What is the average special education teacher salary?

Special education teachers earned a median of $67,170 a year in May 2025, per the BLS. Pay follows your district's salary schedule, your degree and your years of service, so leave it off your resume and check the posted schedule instead.
