Paraprofessionals work wherever a student needs a second trained adult: a reading group, an inclusion classroom, a behavior plan or a 1:1 assignment. A district hiring for one of those roles checks 2 things before anything else. Do you meet the qualification for the position, and what kind of students have you already supported? A strong resume answers both in plain terms, with your setting, your group sizes and the training behind your work, and with every student kept anonymous.
How to Write a Paraprofessional Resume - Key Takeaways
- Keep it to 1 page in reverse-chronological order, with the assignment in every job title line, such as Paraprofessional, 1:1 Support, Grade 3.
- State how you qualify for Title I work, whether that is an associate degree, 2 years of college or a passed ParaPro, so district HR can confirm it at a glance.
- Count what you track: students supported, IEP goals you collect data on, group sizes and minutes, and behavior incidents before and after a plan.
- Put a state paraprofessional license first under Certificates, then CPI crisis training, RBT and first aid, each with its issuer and month.
- Describe students by number, grade and setting, never by name or diagnosis.
- Upload a file that passes an ATS resume checker, since district portals search for the job title and the qualification you name.
What schools look for in a paraprofessional resume
Your resume has 2 readers. District HR checks whether you qualify for the post, and the principal or special education teacher you would work with checks whether you can handle their students. The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes the core of the job as reviewing material with students one-on-one or in small groups and supervising them outside the classroom, at lunch, recess and on field trips. For special education roles, O*NET adds teaching socially acceptable behavior through positive reinforcement and recording data on student progress.
Those duties shape the sections a paraprofessional resume needs, each under a heading the district portal can read:
- Name, headline (for example, Special Education Paraprofessional) and contact details
- A short summary under your name, 2 to 3 lines long, which takes no heading of its own
- Work Experience, newest school first, with the assignment in each title line
- Certificates: a state paraprofessional license first, then ParaPro, crisis training, RBT and first aid
- Education, with college credits counted if you have no degree yet
- Skills, including the classroom software you use
- Languages if you are bilingual; then, if space allows, Key Achievements (or Volunteer Experience instead)
Best format for a paraprofessional resume
Choose the reverse-chronological resume format: your current school first, then each earlier one, with the title and assignment, the school and its town, and start and end months as MM/YYYY. Paraprofessional careers tend to move from general classroom support into more specialized posts, such as resource rooms, behavior support or 1:1 work, and this order lets a reader follow that path. If you changed assignments inside one school, give each assignment its own title line and dates.
- Best for most paraprofessionalsReverse-chronologicalYour jobs, newest first, with your results under each one.Best for: A steady work history in your field
- FunctionalSkills grouped up top, with a short work history below.Best for: Gaps or very little experience
- CombinationA skills section first, then your full work history.Best for: A career change with strong skills
Keep it to 1 page at every stage of a paraprofessional career. After 10 years, cut older jobs to 1 bullet each and drop summer jobs that no longer add a skill, rather than moving to a second page.
| Setting | What to use |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 page, even with 10+ years in schools |
| Job title line | Title plus assignment: Paraprofessional, Resource Room, Grades 6-8 |
| Dates | MM/YYYY, so a school-year job reads 08/2022 – 06/2025, with Present for your current post |
| Student details | Counts, grades and settings only; no names, diagnoses or IEP specifics |
| Typeface | Calibri, Arial or a similar clean font, with body text between 10 and 12 pt |
| Photo, birth date, SSN | No photo for most US and Canadian applications; keep your Social Security number, birth date and marital status off the page |
| File type | PDF, or a Word file if the district application system asks for one |
Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Public school districts usually take applications through an online system that reads your file into its own fields, so plain headings and standard section names carry your details through intact.
Paraprofessional resume summary vs. objective
The test is simple: if you have held a school job for a full school year, write a resume summary with your years, your grade levels, your setting and 1 result. If this would be your first school job, write a resume objective that names the role you want, how you qualify and your closest experience with children. Either way, close it with your qualification route, since that is what HR looks for first.
Paraprofessional resume summary formula
Title with X years supporting grade levels and setting. 1 result or caseload with a number. Your qualification route and training, such as a state license, CPI or RBT.
Example
Special education paraprofessional with 8 years in grades 1 to 8, the last 5 in a middle school resource room. Supports 9 students with IEPs each day and collects data on 11 goals. Holds an Illinois ELS-Paraprofessional license and CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention training.
Don't
Caring and patient paraprofessional who loves helping every student reach their full potential.
Do
Paraprofessional with 5 years across grades K to 8, including 2 as a 1:1 aide in a self-contained classroom. Trained in de-escalation and qualified for Title I posts with an associate degree in education.
This version adds the years, the setting and the qualification a district checks.
How to write paraprofessional work experience bullets with numbers
Give your current job 3 to 4 bullets and earlier jobs 1 to 3. Open with the assignment: how many students you support, in which grades and settings, and for how much of the day. Then add numbers the teacher or case manager already keeps, such as IEP goal data, behavior incidents or small-group progress. Writing achievements on your resume instead of duties means saying what changed for those students, and what part was yours.
| Area | What to count | Example bullet |
|---|---|---|
| Assignment | Students supported, grade, setting, hours a day | Supported 3 students with IEPs in a grade 4 inclusion class of 26 for the full school day. |
| IEP goal data | Goals tracked, how often, who receives it | Took daily probe data on 7 IEP goals and graphed it for the case manager every 2 weeks. |
| Behavior support | Incidents, removals, time on task | Followed a behavior intervention plan that cut 1 student's daily elopements from 4 to 1 over 10 weeks. |
| Academic support | Group size, minutes, scores before and after | Reviewed multiplication facts with 4 third graders for 15 minutes a day; the group's timed-quiz average rose from 11 to 27 correct. |
| Personal care | Students, routines, plans followed | Handled lifts, toileting and lunch feeding for 2 students with physical disabilities under each nurse-written care plan. |
| Supervision | Duty posts, buses, students | Covered bus arrival for 9 buses and about 180 students each morning. |
Here is how a full entry looks for a paraprofessional who moved from an elementary classroom into special education. The assignment and caseload lead, the results follow, and the older job keeps 1 bullet.
Work Experience
- Support 9 students with IEPs across 3 resource-room periods and 2 inclusion science classes each day.
- Log data on 11 IEP goals in Google Sheets and send the case manager a summary every Friday before team meetings.
- Run a break-card and visual-schedule routine with 2 students; their removals from class fell from 14 in fall 2024 to 5 in spring 2025.
- Supervise a group of 6 students on 3 community-based instruction outings a month.
- Led 2 guided-reading groups of 6 first graders a day from the classroom teacher's lesson plans.
Don't
Assisted the teacher with special needs students.
Do
Collected data on 6 IEP goals for 3 second graders and brought the special education teacher a weekly chart ahead of each progress report.
A count of goals and students shows a reader the size of your caseload.
Don't
Helped with behavior management in the classroom.
Do
Ran a token board with 1 student on a behavior plan; on-task intervals rose from 40% to 75% of observations over 8 weeks.
Paraprofessional skills and classroom software for your resume
Pick 6 to 8 skills from the job posting and keep only those a bullet backs up. An academic support post asks for small-group instruction and intervention work; a behavior post asks for de-escalation, data collection and positive reinforcement. For your soft skills, the BLS names communication, interpersonal skills, patience and resourcefulness as important qualities for this work, and a bullet where they hold up under pressure says more than the words alone.
Hard skills for paraprofessionals
- IEP goal data collection
- Small-group instruction
- Behavior intervention plan support
- De-escalation
- Positive reinforcement
- Reading and math intervention
- Visual schedules and supports
- Assistive technology
- Personal care and transfers
- Student supervision
Soft skills teachers value in a paraprofessional
- Patience
- Taking direction well
- Discretion with student information
- Calm in a crisis
- Clear updates to the teacher
- Consistency with routines
O*NET flags Microsoft Office, with Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, as hot technologies for teaching assistants, and lists Google Classroom and ClassDojo among the software used in the job. Name the ones you use and show each at work, such as goal data kept in Google Sheets or daily parent notes sent through ClassDojo. If a student uses a communication device or app, write the device type and what you did with it, such as programming new vocabulary each week.
ParaPro, state paraprofessional licenses and training on a resume
A district's first screen is the qualification. The BLS sets the public school baseline: teacher assistants there need at least 2 years of college coursework or an associate's degree, and most states require a skills test for those who work with special-needs students. Some states then issue their own license or certificate on top. List certifications on your resume in a Certificates section, with the state credential first and each line carrying its issuer and month.
| Credential | Issued by | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| ParaPro Assessment | ETS | A 150-minute test of 90 selected-response questions in reading, math and writing, including how you apply them in the classroom. |
| ELS-Paraprofessional (Illinois) | Illinois State Board of Education | An associate degree or higher, 60 semester hours, or high school completion (diploma or GED) plus a ParaPro score of 460 or higher or WorkKeys scores of 4; valid for 5 fiscal years. |
| General Paraeducator Certificate (Washington) | Professional Educator Standards Board | The 28-hour Fundamental Course of Study, then 70 more clock hours of approved professional development. |
| Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) | Behavior Analyst Certification Board | Age 18 or older, a high school education, a background check, a 40-hour training, an initial competency assessment and the RBT exam. |
| Nonviolent Crisis Intervention | Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) | A de-escalation training program; write its full name and the month you last completed it. |
| Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED | American Red Cross | A course with a hands-on skills session; the BLS notes some assistant jobs require CPR and first aid. |
How to write your Title I qualification
Title I schools, the BLS notes, need paraprofessionals with at least a 2-year degree, 2 years of college, or a passed state or local assessment. Make your route easy to find: a degree sits under Education, credits go there with their count, and a passed test goes under Certificates with its month. ETS now also offers ParaPathways, which it says builds on the ParaPro, so write the exact test name from your score report.
Certificates
- ELS-Paraprofessional, Illinois State Board of Education, issued 07/2018, renewed 06/2023
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI), 08/2025
- Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, American Red Cross, 01/2026
Paraprofessional education: associate degree or college credits
For many paraprofessional posts, Education is where you prove you meet the 2-year college rule, so give it the detail HR needs. With a degree, write the degree, the college, its city and the graduation month. With credits but no degree, write the college, your field and the number of semester hours completed: Illinois, for example, accepts 60 semester hours in place of an associate degree. Follow the general rules for listing education on a resume for everything else.
Add 1 line under the degree for coursework that fits the job, such as child development or an introduction to special education, and for classroom observation hours. List your high school only when it is your highest qualification and you qualify through a test instead.
Education
Coursework in child development and educational psychology; 24 hours of classroom observation.
Paraprofessional resumes with no experience or a career change
With no school job yet, open with an objective, then put your qualification route where HR finds it at once: your degree, your credits or your ParaPro month. Next, give any regular work with children or teens a full entry, with their ages, the group size and how long you did it. The entry-level resume examples show how a short history still fills a page.
- Camp counselor or after-school jobs: group size, ages and seasons, as a Work Experience entry.
- Tutoring: students, subjects and sessions a week, paid or volunteer.
- Coaching, youth ministry or scouting: under Volunteer Experience, with the number of children and the years.
- Caring for a family member with a disability: 1 line in your summary about the routines you managed, if you are comfortable sharing it.
- A second language: under Languages, since bilingual paraprofessional posts screen for it.
Don't
Seeking a paraprofessional position where I can make a difference in students' lives.
Do
Passed the ParaPro Assessment in 09/2026 and seeking an elementary paraprofessional role. Led a day camp group of 14 children aged 6 to 9 for 3 summers and tutored reading on weekends for 2 years.
Even a first objective needs the qualification, an age group and a count.
Coming from retail, food service, childcare or healthcare, stay with newest-first order and add the qualification at the top. Under older jobs, keep bullets that carry into a classroom: calming upset customers, following written procedures, or training new staff. The career-change resume examples show the layout, and our teacher assistant cover letter examples show how to explain the move in a short paragraph.
Paraprofessional resume FAQ
Is a paraprofessional the same as a paraeducator?
Yes, in practice. O*NET lists paraeducator, instructional paraprofessional and teacher aide among the titles for the same occupation. Use the exact title from the posting in your headline, and keep your real title from each job in Work Experience.
What qualifications does a paraprofessional need for a Title I school?
Any 1 of 3 routes, as the BLS lists them: at least a 2-year degree, 2 years of college, or a passed state or local assessment such as the ParaPro. Some states add their own license, so check your state education agency and write your route plainly on the resume.
Should I put RBT certification on a paraprofessional resume?
Yes, if it is current. List it under Certificates as Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), Behavior Analyst Certification Board, with the month, and show it in a bullet about a behavior plan you carried out. It matters most on behavioral and special education posts.
How do I describe a 1:1 assignment without naming the student?
Describe the grade, the setting and the kind of support, then the result. For example: 1:1 paraprofessional for a fifth grader in a general education class, providing reading support and a daily behavior check-in. Leave out the name, the diagnosis and any detail from the IEP.
What should a behavioral paraprofessional resume include?
Crisis training such as CPI Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, any RBT certification, and bullets with behavior data: incidents, removals or time on task before and after a plan. Name the tools you used, such as token boards, visual schedules or break cards, and who wrote the plan you followed.
How do I list school-year jobs with summers off?
As 1 entry per school and assignment, with dates that run from August to June, such as 08/2022 – 06/2025. Summers off need no explanation. If you worked a summer program or extended school year, add it as a bullet or as its own entry.
How much do paraprofessionals make?
The BLS groups paraprofessionals with teaching assistants, whose median annual wage was $37,010 in May 2025. Pay varies by district, state and assignment, and many posts pay hourly; leave pay off your resume.
