Tutor resume example

Tutors get hired, and rehired, when their students improve. A tutoring center, a school program or a parent wants to know which subjects and grade levels you cover, how you plan sessions around a student's gaps, and what changed afterward, from a quiz grade to a test score. If you work through an agency, an online platform and private clients at once, your resume can read as a pile of short gigs. Laid out clearly, the same work shows steady demand: hours logged, students who stayed for months and scores that moved.

How to Write a Tutor Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep it to 1 page in reverse-chronological order, and put your subject and grade band in the job title line, such as Tutor, Math and SAT Prep.
  • Open with a 2- to 3-line summary that names your subjects, the ages you tutor, your caseload and 1 student result with a number.
  • Give each bullet a tutoring number: students a week, session hours, score or grade changes, or families who came back.
  • Give each agency, platform and private practice its own entry, with your hours or students for each.
  • Certificates are optional for tutors; list an NTA or CRLA level, a teaching certificate or first aid only if you hold it.
  • Count students instead of naming them, then check the file with an ATS resume checker before you send it to a tutoring company.

What tutoring centers and families look for in a tutor resume

O*NET describes tutors as people who teach individual students or small groups to support class instruction or to prepare them for standardized and admissions tests. Its core tasks include reviewing class material by working through problems or texts, assessing progress during sessions, and teaching study skills and test-taking strategies. It also lists working with parents, teachers and counselors to set a tutoring plan.

That gives whoever hires you 3 questions: what you teach and to whom, how much tutoring you have done, and whether it worked. Build the page from these sections:

  • Your name and contact details, plus a headline naming your subjects (for example, Chemistry and Biology Tutor)
  • Summary of 2 to 3 lines under your name; it needs no heading
  • Work Experience, with each tutoring employer, platform or private practice as its own entry
  • Skills, with the subjects, methods and software you use
  • Certificates, if you hold any
  • Education, with your major when it matches your subject
  • Optional: Languages, plus Key Achievements (or Volunteer Experience instead)

Best format for a tutor resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format, with your most recent tutoring job first and each entry carrying your title, the employer, its location and the start and end month in MM/YYYY form. Tutoring work often runs side by side, so dates may overlap, and this format shows that plainly. A combination format, with skills above your history, suits you only if every job so far sits outside education.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a tutor resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

One page covers nearly every tutor, including those with 10 or more years of sessions. Go to 2 pages only if you also run a tutoring program, train other tutors or teach in a classroom, and keep your 2 most recent roles on page 1.

Tutor resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 only with program management or classroom teaching on top
Job title lineTitle plus subject or grade band: Tutor, Algebra and Geometry
Several clients at once1 entry per employer or platform, overlapping dates allowed
DatesMM/YYYY, and Present for any client you still tutor
Photo and private dataLeave the photo off for most US and Canadian tutoring jobs; no date of birth, family status or Social Security number
File typePDF, or a Word file if the tutoring company's portal asks for one

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Tutoring companies screen many applicants through online forms, and a clean, text-based page keeps your subjects readable by that software.

Tutor resume summary vs. objective

If anyone has paid you to tutor, write a resume summary that names your subjects, the ages you work with and your best student result. If you have only tutored classmates or volunteered, write an objective stating the tutoring role you want and the strongest proof you have. Keep either one to 3 lines and draft it after your bullets, so its number comes from them.

Tutor resume summary formula

Subject tutor with X years helping grade level or test students, in person, online or both. Your best score, grade or progress result, with a number. Credential, method or weekly caseload.

Example

Math and SAT tutor with 7 years helping students in grades 7 to 12, at a learning center and on Zoom. Lifted a spring SAT Math group's average by 70 points. Holds NTA Advanced Level Tutor Certification; 22 students a week.

Don't

Patient and passionate tutor who loves helping students reach their full potential.

Do

Reading tutor with 4 years in grades 2 to 5, working with 30 students a year in pull-out groups of 3. Of those, 24 met their spring reading benchmark last year. CRLA Level 2 certified.

This version adds the subject, the grades, the volume, the result and a credential.

How to write tutor work experience bullets with student results

Under your current tutoring job, write 3 to 4 bullets that start with a verb; older roles get 2 to 4. Lead with your caseload, then add results a parent or director can picture: a grade that rose, a test score that moved, a family that signed up for another term. Those achievements on your resume carry far more weight than a list of the subjects you covered.

Numbers that prove tutoring work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
CaseloadStudents a week, sessions, subjects, grade rangeHeld 25 to 30 sessions a week across 3 subjects for students in grades 6 to 10.
Test prepTest, group size, score changePrepared 12 students for the ACT; the group's average composite rose from 21 to 25.
GradesStudents, starting and ending grade, grading periodLifted the biology semester grade of 9 of 12 students from F to C or higher.
Retention and referralsFamilies kept, renewals, referralsGrew a private roster from 4 to 16 families in 2 years, 10 of them by referral.
MaterialsWorksheets, practice tests, lesson setsWrote 6 full-length practice sections for a GRE verbal course.
Online tutoringPlatform hours, tools, students onlineLogged 400+ hours on Zoom, with a Google Classroom for each student's notes and practice.

Here is one tutor's history with those numbers in place. The current job gets 4 bullets with scale and results, and the part-time role before it gets 2.

Don't

Helped students with their homework.

Do

Ran 3 weekly homework sessions for 8 fourth graders and cut the group's missing assignments from 31 in the fall to 9 in the spring.

Don't

Responsible for tutoring chemistry students.

Do

Tutored 15 AP Chemistry students on stoichiometry and equilibrium; 12 scored 3 or higher on the May exam.

How to list agency, platform and private tutoring at the same time

Give each source of students one entry: the tutoring company, the online platform, or your own practice written as Private Tutor, Self-Employed, with your city. Overlapping dates are normal and need no explanation. Put the entry with the most hours first, and give each one its own number, such as students a week or total hours, so the reader sees how your time splits.

Tutoring skills and software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the job ad, keeping only those your bullets can back up. For a subject tutor, the subjects themselves count as skills, written at the level you teach: AP Chemistry or Algebra 2 says more than science or math.

Hard skills for tutors

  • Diagnostic assessment
  • Individual tutoring plans
  • Small-group instruction
  • SAT and ACT preparation
  • Study skills and note-taking
  • Test-taking strategies
  • Reading comprehension strategies
  • Essay and writing feedback
  • Progress reports for parents
  • Online session delivery

Soft skills tutoring directors value

  • Patience with repeated questions
  • Clear explanations
  • Active listening
  • Encouragement that builds confidence
  • Reliability with scheduled sessions
  • Plain-language parent updates

List your software with your skills, then show it at work in a bullet. O*NET flags Zoom, Microsoft PowerPoint, Word and Excel as hot technology for tutors, and also lists Google Classroom, Desmos, Blackboard and Edpuzzle. If you track student progress in a spreadsheet or run sessions on a digital whiteboard, name the exact tool the job ad uses.

Tutor certifications: NTA, CRLA and first aid on a resume

O*NET names no license for tutors, and none of the credentials below is a requirement for most tutoring jobs. If you hold one, list certifications on your resume in a short Certificates section with the issuer and the date. A state teaching certificate goes there too, written with the state and its subject, and it suits school-based or district tutoring roles.

How to list your degree and subject knowledge on a tutor resume

Tutors come from many education levels. On O*NET's survey of the occupation, 41% of respondents said a new tutor needs a bachelor's degree, 36% said some college with no degree, and 9% said high school was enough. Follow the usual rules for listing education on a resume: degree, school, city and graduation date, and a GPA only if it is 3.5 or higher and you graduated in the last 2 to 3 years.

For subject tutoring, your major is part of your credential, so put it in the degree line. If your degree sits outside the subject you tutor, add 1 line under it with the advanced courses you passed in that subject, or a minor. Students still in college can list their expected graduation date and their tutoring center hours.

University of Rhode Island | Kingston, RI

Coursework: Calculus III, Linear Algebra, Probability and Statistics.

Entry-level and career-change tutor resumes

If tutoring will be your first paid job, an entry-level resume layout fits: a short objective, Education placed above Work Experience, then any experience of explaining things to someone younger or newer. A part-time job outside education still belongs on the page, with a few bullets on reliability or training others.

  • Peer tutoring or a campus writing center: sessions held, subjects and any CRLA level earned.
  • Teaching assistant or grader roles: course, number of students, office hours a week.
  • Volunteer reading or homework programs: grade level, hours a week, listed under Volunteer Experience.
  • Camp, coaching or youth program work: group size, age range and anything you taught.

Don't

Recent graduate seeking a tutoring position to gain teaching experience.

Do

English graduate seeking a reading tutor role for grades 3 to 6. Held 180 sessions over 2 semesters at a campus writing center and earned CRLA Level 1 tutor certification.

The objective names the role and the age group, then backs both with a session count.

Coming from youth work, coaching, a corporate training role or a field such as engineering or nursing, you can switch on transferable skills without a new credential. On a career-change resume, open with a summary that names the subject you now tutor, and rewrite the first bullets under your old job around teaching, planning or mentoring, with their numbers. The reason for the switch belongs in a cover letter of 3 or 4 short paragraphs.

Tutor resume FAQ

Do you need a certification to be a tutor?

No. O*NET names no license for tutors, so your subject knowledge and tutoring record carry the application. Certification from the National Tutoring Association or a CRLA-certified college program is a plus. School-based or district programs may ask for a state teaching certificate, so check the posting.

How do I list several tutoring clients or platforms on one resume?

Give each company, platform or private practice its own Work Experience entry, even when the dates overlap. Write your own clients as Private Tutor, Self-Employed, with your city. Put the busiest one first and give each entry its own count of students or hours.

How do I show student progress without naming students?

Use counts and ranges instead of names. Write the number of students, the subject or test, and the change, such as 9 of 12 students moving from F to C or higher. Never list a student's name, school or personal details, even with permission.

Should I put my own SAT or ACT score on a tutor resume?

Only if you tutor that test and the score is strong. A test-prep employer wants to know you can do well on the exam you teach, so a line under Education such as SAT 1540 or ACT 34 answers that early. For subject tutoring, your coursework and student results matter more.

How long should a tutor resume be?

One page. Even with many years of sessions, 1 page holds your recent tutoring roles, your subjects and your results. Move to 2 pages only if you also manage a tutoring program, train other tutors or teach in a classroom.

Does peer tutoring in college count as tutoring experience?

Yes. A campus tutoring center or writing center is real tutoring work, so list it under Work Experience if it was paid, or Volunteer Experience if it was not. Give it the same numbers as any other job: sessions held, subjects and any CRLA level you earned.

What subjects should I list on a tutor resume?

List only the subjects you can tutor from the first session, written at their level, such as Algebra 2, AP Biology or 4th-grade reading. Put the 2 or 3 you teach most in your headline and the rest in Skills, and back each one with a bullet.

Should I put my hourly rate on a tutor resume?

No. Keep your rate for the application form, the interview or a direct conversation with a family. For a benchmark, BLS Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics data put the median pay for tutors at $43,350 a year in May 2025, or $20.84 an hour; rates vary by subject, city and test.
