17 Massage Therapist Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Spa managers and clinic owners check where you are licensed, which techniques you use, how many sessions you give a week and whether clients book you again. Use these examples and the guide below to put each of those on the page, from your first license to a lead therapist role.

Massage Therapist resume example

A good massage leaves clients wanting to book again. An employer reading your resume wants proof of the same thing: the techniques you use, the state that licensed you, the number of sessions you give each week and whether clients come back to you. A list of modalities answers only the first of those. Your setting, your weekly load and your rebooking rate answer the rest, and each one has a set place on the page.

How to Write a Massage Therapist Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep it to 1 page in reverse-chronological order, with the setting clear in every job entry.
  • Open each job with your weekly session count and your usual booking lengths, since every other number reads against them.
  • Prove client loyalty with numbers the front desk already tracks: rebooking at checkout, regular clients, memberships and referrals.
  • List your state license first under Certificates, written the way your board writes it, then BCTMB, CPR and continuing education.
  • Name 6 to 8 modalities you can deliver on a full schedule, and back each must-have from the posting with a bullet.
  • Run the file through an ATS resume checker before you apply to a franchise or clinic group that screens online.

What spa managers and clinic owners look for in a massage therapist resume

Your reader depends on the setting. The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts 36% of massage therapists as self-employed; among employers, personal care services such as spas lead at 33% of jobs, followed by offices of other health practitioners at 12% and chiropractic offices at 7%. A day spa manager reads for steady bookings and repeat guests, while a chiropractor or physical therapy practice reads for intake, treatment plans and clean records.

O*NET lists conferring with clients about their medical histories, proposing treatment plans that say which types of massage to use, keeping treatment records and referring clients to other therapists among the core tasks. Every one of those can become a bullet with a count attached. Build the page from these sections:

  • Name, headline (for example, Licensed Massage Therapist, BCTMB) and contact details
  • A 2 to 3 line summary under your name; it prints without a heading
  • Work Experience, newest job first, with the setting clear in each entry
  • Certificates: your state license first, then board certification, CPR and continuing education
  • Skills, including your modalities and booking or charting system
  • Education, with your program's clock hours
  • If space allows: Languages for the clients you serve in them, and 1 extra section: Key Achievements, or else Volunteer Experience

Best format for a massage therapist resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your current job first, each entry with the job title and setting, the business name and its city, then the months you started and left in MM/YYYY form. Employers want to see where you have worked most recently and for how long, and this order puts both on the first lines. If you work 2 part-time jobs at once, such as a spa and a chiropractic office, list both as current entries with Present.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a massage therapist resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

1 page fits almost every massage therapist, including those with 10 or more years in practice. Spend the space on your current and previous jobs, your license and your modalities, and cut short side jobs that taught you nothing a massage employer would book you for.

Massage Therapist resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; a second page only for teaching, research or a long clinical record
DatesMM/YYYY for every job, Present for the ones you still hold
Job title lineTitle, plus the setting when the business name does not show it: Massage Therapist, Chiropractic Office
HeadlineThe title your state lets you use, plus board certification, such as Licensed Massage Therapist, BCTMB
Font and spacing1 readable typeface for headings and text, with clear space between jobs
Personal detailsPhoto usually left off in the US and Canada; leave off your date of birth, marriage details and Social Security number
File typePDF, or a Word file when the booking platform or job board asks for one

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Your spa or booking profile may show a headshot for clients, but the resume you send an employer is about your license, your techniques and your numbers.

Massage therapist resume summary vs. objective

Once you have held a license and worked with paying clients, write a resume summary: your years, your settings, 2 or 3 modalities and 1 number that shows clients return. Fresh out of school or still waiting on your license, write a resume objective that names the setting you want, your exam and license status and your student clinic hours.

Massage therapist resume summary formula

Licensed or certified title with X years in settings, focused on 2 to 3 modalities. 1 number that shows clients return. State license and certification.

Example

Licensed massage therapist with 8 years in chiropractic and wellness studio settings, focused on deep tissue, myofascial release and prenatal massage. Keeps a book of 110 regular clients, with 64% rebooking before checkout. Licensed in New York and Board Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.

Don't

Passionate massage therapist dedicated to helping every client relax, unwind and feel their best.

Do

Massage therapist with 4 years at a physical therapy practice, treating runners and post-op knee patients in about 30 sessions a week. Licensed in Illinois and adding lymphatic drainage training in 2027.

The rewrite gives an employer the setting, the clients, the load and the license.

How to write massage therapy work experience bullets with numbers

Write 3 to 4 bullets for the job you hold now and 1 to 4 for each earlier one, fewer the further back it goes. Let the first bullet carry your weekly session count and booking lengths, because a manager reads every later number against it. After that, pick the results your booking system already records: rebooking, regulars, memberships, completed treatment plans or add-ons. Write each as one of your achievements on your resume, verb first, with the base the number comes from.

Numbers that prove massage therapy work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Session loadSessions a week, booking lengths, rooms you coverGave 27 sessions a week in a 4-room spa, split between 50- and 80-minute bookings.
Client retentionRebooking at checkout, regulars, membershipsMoved 58 first-time clients onto monthly memberships in 2025.
Clinical workTreatment plans, physician or chiropractor referrals, plans completedWrote 6-visit treatment plans for referred patients; 41 of 48 finished the full plan in 2025.
RevenueAdd-ons, upgrades, retail, gift cardsOffered hot stone and aromatherapy upgrades at intake, taking add-ons to 1 in 3 bookings.
RecordsSOAP notes, intake forms, insurance or auto-injury casesKept SOAP notes for 25 auto-injury patients a month, each filed on the day of treatment.
Events and outreachChair massage events, corporate days, people treatedGave 15-minute chair massages to 140 employees across 3 corporate wellness days.

Here is one therapist's history with those numbers in place. The session load opens each job, the results follow, and the older entry stays short.

Sample entry: massage therapist at a wellness studio

Work Experience

Massage Therapist, Wellness Studio03/2022 – Present
Vessimor Wellness Studio | New York, NY
  • Give 24 to 26 sessions a week in a 5-room studio, mostly 60- and 90-minute deep tissue and myofascial bookings.
  • Built a book of 110 regular clients, with 64% rebooking their next session before checkout.

Massage Therapist, Chiropractic Office09/2018 – 02/2022
Brackwen Chiropractic | Bayside, NY
  • Treated 35 patients a week in 30-minute sessions alongside chiropractic adjustments, with SOAP notes filed the same day.

Don't

Performed Swedish and deep tissue massages.

Do

Give 22 Swedish and deep tissue sessions a week; 15 of them are standing weekly or biweekly bookings.

Standing bookings tell a manager your clients plan their schedule around you.

Don't

Responsible for client intake.

Do

Screen every client's intake form and health history before the session; referred 9 clients to their physician in 2025 instead of treating them.

Massage therapy skills, modalities and booking software

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting, and list only modalities you could deliver on a full day of bookings. Swedish and deep tissue belong on most massage resumes; prenatal, sports or lymphatic work only when you trained for it and a bullet shows you doing it.

Hard skills for massage therapists

  • Swedish massage
  • Deep tissue massage
  • Myofascial release
  • Trigger point therapy
  • Sports massage
  • Prenatal massage
  • Lymphatic drainage
  • Client intake and assessment
  • Treatment planning
  • SOAP note documentation

Soft skills employers value in massage therapists

  • Active listening
  • Communicating pressure and consent
  • Empathy for clients in pain
  • Discretion with health information
  • Physical stamina
  • Timekeeping between back-to-back sessions

O*NET lists calendar and scheduling software and massage-specific charting tools such as Massage Suite for this job, and flags Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel as hot technologies. Name your booking or SOAP note system exactly as the posting does, whether that is Mindbody, Vagaro or MassageBook, and show it at work in one of your bullets, such as keeping notes or managing your own calendar.

Massage therapy license, MBLEx and certifications on a resume

Most states regulate massage therapy, the BLS reports, usually requiring graduation from an approved program and a passing exam; some also ask for a background check, liability insurance and CPR. That exam is usually the MBLEx: the Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards says it is used for licensure in 46 of the 49 regulated jurisdictions. New York is one that sets its own path, with 1,000 hours of education and the New York State Massage Therapy Examination, while California offers voluntary statewide certification through CAMTC. List certifications on your resume below the license, each with its issuer and date.

Massage therapy credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
State massage therapy licenseYour state's massage board or licensing agencyUsually an approved program and a passing exam; the hours, exam and renewal rules are set by each state.
MBLEx (Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination)Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB)100 questions in 110 minutes; a pass stays valid for your career while your license is in good standing.
Certified Massage Therapist (CAMTC)California Massage Therapy CouncilAt least 500 hours from approved schools, 100 of them in core subjects, plus a Live Scan background check.
BCTMB (Board Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork)National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB)A current state license, the board certification exam and a criminal background check; in unlicensed states, a program of at least 500 hours.
CPR and first aidAmerican Red Cross or American Heart AssociationA short course; some states and many employers ask for a current card.

Passing the MBLEx is not a license

FSMTB states plainly that a passing MBLEx result does not mean you are licensed to practice: you still apply to your state board. Until the license is issued, write the exam and its month in your objective, such as MBLEx passed 07/2026, license application pending with your state board. Once it is issued, the license moves to the top of Certificates with the state, the board and the month.

Sample Certificates section: New York license and board certification

Certificates

  • Massage Therapist License, New York, New York State Education Department, 08/2018
  • Board Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (BCTMB), NCBTMB, 06/2024
  • Adult First Aid/CPR/AED, American Red Cross, 03/2026

How to list massage therapy school and clock hours

The BLS places massage therapy programs in private schools and community colleges. They take several months to a few years and cover anatomy, physiology, kinesiology and pathology along with business and ethics. Some programs focus on a modality, such as sports, rehabilitative or oncology massage. Put that focus in your education entry when it matches the job you want.

Give the credential, where you trained, the town and the month you finished, as with listing education on a resume for any job. Add the program's clock hours or the state requirement it meets, because hour minimums differ by state (500 for CAMTC certification, 1,000 in New York), and an employer hiring across a state line checks them.

Sample education entry: massage therapy degree

Education

Associate in Applied Science (AAS), Massage Therapy05/2018
Queensborough Community College | Bayside, NY

Program registered to meet New York's 1,000-hour licensure requirement, with supervised student clinic work.

New grad and career-change massage therapist resumes

As a new graduate, your student clinic is your work history. Count the sessions you gave, name the modalities you practiced, and put your exam and license status in your objective with dates. The BLS calls part-time work common in this job, so say in your objective whether you want part-time or full-time hours. The entry-level resume layout works if your history is short.

  • Student clinic: sessions given, booking lengths and the modalities you practiced, under Education or as its own entry.
  • Outreach and events: chair massage at races, nursing homes or school fundraisers, with the people treated, under Volunteer Experience.
  • Front desk or spa attendant work: a full entry with the bookings or rooms you handled.
  • Related jobs: personal training, fitness instruction or physical therapy aide work, with the clients you worked with each week.

Don't

Recent massage school graduate eager to start my career at a reputable spa.

Do

Massage therapy graduate, MBLEx passed 07/2026 and license application pending, seeking a part-time role at a sports or wellness clinic. Gave 120 student clinic sessions and spent 2 years as a personal trainer.

Even a new grad objective can carry an exam date, a setting and a count.

If you are moving into massage from personal training, cosmetology, nursing support or an unrelated field, stay with newest-first order and put the new license and school up top. Keep only the older bullets that carry over: hands-on client work, health histories, scheduling or physical stamina. The career-change resume examples show that layout, and our healthcare cover letter examples show how to account for the switch in 3 or 4 sentences.

Massage Therapist resume FAQ

Can I put LMT after my name on my resume?

Only if your state issues a massage therapy license and lets you use that title. Copy your board's wording: New York allows licensed massage therapist in advertising, and California reserves Certified Massage Therapist for people certified by CAMTC. Never add a title before the license or certification is issued.

Can I apply for massage therapist jobs before my license is issued?

Yes, as long as your resume says where you stand. Give your exam result and month and the pending application in your objective, such as MBLEx passed 07/2026, license application pending. In a licensing state, employers cannot let you treat clients until the license is issued, so give a realistic start date.

How do I list massage modalities on a resume?

Put 6 to 8 modalities you deliver regularly in Skills, using the posting's own names, such as deep tissue or prenatal massage. Then prove the main ones in bullets with a weekly count. A list of 20 techniques with no bullets behind them reads as a school syllabus, not a practice.

How do I show self-employed or mobile massage work on a resume?

List your practice as a job, with your business name or Self-Employed, your city and its dates. Give it bullets like any employer: sessions a week, regular clients, where you treat them, such as homes, offices or events, and how you find new clients. The BLS counts 36% of massage therapists as self-employed, so employers know the setup.

How long should a massage therapist resume be?

1 page, whether you finished school this year or have practiced for 15 years. Spend it on recent jobs, your license, modalities and school hours, and cut unrelated jobs before adding a second page.

Should I list continuing education on a massage therapist resume?

Yes, when it adds a modality or meets the posting. Many states require continuing education to renew a license; New York, for example, asks for 36 hours every 3 years. List advanced courses such as lymphatic drainage or oncology massage under Certificates with the provider, hours and date, and leave routine renewal hours off.

What is the average massage therapist salary?

The BLS reports a median wage of $58,450 a year for massage therapists in May 2025. Pay varies with your setting, your hours, tips and commission splits; keep it off your resume and discuss it once an employer makes an offer.
