Coaching resume example

Coaches are judged by how their teams and players improve from one season to the next. An athletic director will want your sport and level, the results your teams earned and current safety training. Years of practices and game days can easily shrink into a plain list of duties. Lead with records, player progress and certifications, and the page reads like the coaching record it is.

How to Write a Coaching Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Order your jobs newest first (reverse-chronological) and keep to 1 page until you have 10+ years or several programs behind you.
  • Write the role, the level and the sport in every job title line, such as Assistant Coach, Varsity Girls' Soccer.
  • Back each job with numbers an athletic director tracks: records, roster size, players developed, team GPA and money raised.
  • List CPR/AED, first aid and every coaching course your state or league requires under Certificates, naming who issued each one and when.
  • Put your playing career in 1 line under Education or Key Achievements, not as a job.
  • Run the finished file through an ATS resume checker before you upload it to a district hiring portal.

What athletic directors look for in a coaching resume

An athletic director reads a coaching resume for 3 things: the sport and level you have coached, proof that your teams and athletes got better, and the safety training the program has to have on file. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook lists planning and running practice sessions, analyzing athletes and opponents, directing conditioning programs and keeping performance records as core duties. O*NET adds tracking the academic eligibility of student athletes and managing the program's budget and fundraising.

Each of those duties should show up in a bullet with a count attached. Lay the page out in these sections, using headings a hiring portal can parse:

  • Name, headline (for example, Head Coach, Varsity Volleyball) and contact details
  • A short summary of 2 to 3 lines that opens the page without a heading
  • Work Experience, newest job first, with the level and sport in each title
  • Certificates: CPR/AED, first aid, coaching courses and any NSCA or governing-body credential
  • Skills, with the film, stats and team apps you use
  • Education, with your playing career in 1 line if it is relevant
  • Optional: Languages, Volunteer Experience or Key Achievements

Best format for a coaching resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your newest coaching job first, each with its title, the school or club, the city, and start and end dates as MM/YYYY. Coaching careers climb in visible rungs, from volunteer or middle school coach to assistant, junior varsity, varsity and head coach, and listing newest first lets a reader follow that climb season by season.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a coaching resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep the resume to 1 page while you are an assistant or in your first head job. A second page makes sense once you have 10+ years or have run several programs, as long as your current job and your certifications sit on page 1. Seasonal and stipend jobs get their real dates, so 08/2023 – 11/2023 is fine for a fall-only role.

Coaching resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page for assistants and first-time head coaches; 2 after 10+ years or several programs
DatesMM/YYYY for every job, Present for your current one, real dates for season-only roles
Job title lineRole, level and sport: Head Coach, JV Boys' Basketball
Coaching plus teachingOne entry per employer, both roles in the title: Physical Education Teacher and Head Track Coach
Font and spacingOne clean sans serif, body text between 10 and 12 pt, with white space between jobs
Photo and private dataSkip the photo for most US and Canadian jobs; never add your age, marital status or Social Security number
File typePDF, or Word when the district's application portal asks for it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. School districts often take applications through an online portal that reads your file into its own fields, so plain headings and a single column of dates help more than team colors or a logo.

Coaching resume summary vs. objective

Use a summary if you have held a paid or volunteer coaching role for at least 1 full season: write a resume summary with your years, your sport and level, 1 program result and your key credential. If you have never coached a team of your own, write a resume objective that names the role you want and the playing, teaching or camp experience behind it.

Coaching resume summary formula

Role with X years coaching sport at the level. Your biggest program or athlete result, counted. Credentials named in the job ad.

Example

Head volleyball coach with 10 years at the high school level, the last 5 running a 3-team program of 38 players. Turned a losing varsity into a 2-time district champion. Current in First Aid/CPR/AED and the UIL Coaches Certification Program.

Don't

Passionate coach dedicated to developing student-athletes on and off the field.

Do

Assistant football coach with 4 years coaching the offensive line at a large public high school. The line allowed 11 sacks in 2025, down from 29 in 2023. CSCS exam scheduled for 03/2027.

This version names the sport, the unit, a result and the next credential.

How to write coaching work experience bullets with numbers

Give your current job 3 to 4 bullets and each older job the same or fewer, down to 1 or 2 for a job from years back. Open with the size of what you ran (teams, players, assistants), then add results a program already keeps score of. Wins count, but a hiring committee also weighs roster growth, players developed, grades and money raised, so write each as one of your resume achievements, with its starting point.

Numbers that prove coaching work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Team resultsSeason record, conference finish, playoff roundsTurned a 6-16 conference record into a 15-7 finish and the program's first playoff berth in 9 years.
Player developmentAll-conference picks, athletes moved up a level, college signingsCoached 11 all-district selections and helped 5 seniors sign with college programs over 4 years.
ParticipationRoster size, tryout turnout, returning playersGrew the program from 22 to 41 players by adding a freshman team and a spring skills league.
AcademicsTeam GPA, players kept eligible, academic honorsRaised the team's average GPA from 2.9 to 3.3 with 2 supervised study halls a week.
Conditioning and safetyTesting results, injuries in practice, athletes availableCut ankle sprains from 8 to 3 a season by adding a 10-minute balance warm-up with the athletic trainer.
Budget and fundraisingDollars raised, budget managed, camps and clinics runRan 2 summer camps a year for 90 campers and raised $9,800 for travel and equipment.

Here is a head coach's entry built that way. The program size leads, the results follow, and the older assistant job keeps a shorter list.

Sample entry: high school head volleyball coach

Work Experience

Head Volleyball Coach, Varsity Girls08/2021 – Present
Merrowind High School | Lubbock, TX
  • Lead a 3-team program (varsity, JV and freshman) of 38 players with 2 assistant coaches.
  • Took the varsity from 9-21 to 24-10 in 3 seasons, with district titles in 2024 and 2025.
  • Run weekly grade checks with 14 teachers; no player lost eligibility in 2025-26.
  • Raised $12,400 through 3 summer camps for 140 middle school players.
Assistant Volleyball Coach, JV Girls08/2016 – 07/2021
Tolvane High School | Wolfforth, TX
  • Coached the JV to a 19-6 record in 2020 and ran serve-receive drills for all 3 teams.

Don't

Coached the varsity soccer team.

Do

Coached a 24-player varsity soccer roster to a 13-4-2 record and the school's first conference title since 2012.

This bullet adds the roster, the record and why the season mattered.

Don't

Responsible for running practices and conditioning.

Do

Planned 90-minute practices 5 days a week and cut the team's average 40-yard time by 0.2 seconds over the summer.

How to list coaching and teaching at the same school

Many school coaches also teach, and the two jobs share an employer and dates. Write 1 entry with both roles in the title line, then split the bullets: 1 or 2 on classes taught and 2 or 3 on the team. If you coach 2 sports at the school, name both in the title and give each its own result.

Coaching skills and software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting and keep only those a bullet proves. Practice planning and skill instruction fit almost every coaching job; film breakdown, recruiting or periodized strength programming belong where your role really covered them.

Hard skills for coaches

  • Practice planning
  • Skill and technique instruction
  • Game strategy and play calling
  • Opponent scouting
  • Film breakdown
  • Athlete evaluation
  • Strength and conditioning programming
  • Injury prevention and emergency action plans
  • Academic eligibility tracking
  • Program budgeting and fundraising

Soft skills athletic directors value

  • Motivating athletes
  • Clear communication with parents
  • Composure on game day
  • Mentoring young people
  • Fair, consistent discipline
  • Organization across a long season

Among O*NET's hot technologies for coaches and scouts are Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Microsoft PowerPoint and Facebook, the tools behind stat sheets, practice plans, parent meetings and team pages. Add the film, stats or team app your program runs, such as Hudl, MaxPreps or TeamSnap, where the posting names it, and prove it in a bullet, for example the number of games you broke down each week.

Coaching certifications: CPR, NFHS, SafeSport and CSCS

The BLS handbook notes that coaching certification often requires being at least 18 and trained in CPR and first aid, that public high school coaches may need to be certified or complete mandatory courses, and that coaches who also teach must meet state licensing rules, including a background check. Your state's high school athletic association sets the details. List certifications on your resume in their own Certificates section, each with its issuer and the month you earned or renewed it.

Common coaching credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
First Aid, CPR and AEDAmerican Red Cross or American Heart AssociationCurrent certification from a recognized provider, such as the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
Fundamentals of CoachingNFHS Learning CenterAn online NFHS Core Course approved for 12 clock hours; NFHS asks coaches to check that it meets their state's rules.
UIL Coaches Certification ProgramUniversity Interscholastic League (Texas)Required for coaches of grades 7 to 12, completed every year before the sport's season.
SafeSport TrainedU.S. Center for SafeSportThe Core course before contact with minor athletes for adults in the Olympic and Paralympic Movement, then a Refresher every 12 months.
CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist)National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA)A bachelor's degree, a current CPR/AED card, and passing both exam sections, Scientific Foundations and Practical/Applied.

State rules: Texas as an example

Requirements differ by state, so write the exact name of each course your state demands. In Texas, the UIL states that its Coaches Certification Program also satisfies the state's safety training and steroid education rules, and Texas law, as summarized by the UIL, requires coaches to keep current CPR and AED certification. A coach moving from another state lists the national courses and adds the new state's program with a completion date as soon as it is done.

Sample Certificates section: Texas high school coach

Certificates

  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, American Red Cross, 07/2026
  • UIL Coaches Certification Program, University Interscholastic League, 07/2026
  • SafeSport Trained, U.S. Center for SafeSport, 06/2026
  • Fundamentals of Coaching, NFHS Learning Center, 06/2017

How to list your degree and playing career

The BLS says coaches typically need a bachelor's degree, though youth league and part-time roles are less likely to ask for one. A kinesiology, exercise science or physical education degree reads as directly relevant, so name the major in full. The NSCA's CSCS requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited school; from 01/2030, US candidates will need one from a CASCE-accredited program. Put the degree, school, city and graduation date in that order, as you would when listing education on a resume for any job.

Your playing career belongs in 1 line under the degree: the sport, the level and the seasons, plus a captaincy or an all-conference honor. Drop the GPA once you have 3 or more seasons of coaching, unless the job ad requests it.

Sample education entry: kinesiology degree with a playing career

Education

Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology05/2016
Texas Tech University | Lubbock, TX

Played 4 seasons of club volleyball, captain in the final year.

First coaching job and career-change coaching resumes

Hiring committees look for time spent with athletes in some form, even if none of it was a paid coaching job. Lead with an objective, then put that evidence where a reader can count it. The entry-level resume layout works if coaching is your first job after school.

  • Youth league or club coaching: the age group, the roster size and the seasons, listed under Volunteer Experience if it was unpaid.
  • Camps and clinics: camper numbers, the skills you taught and how many weeks you worked.
  • Student teaching or practicum hours: the school, the classes and any team you helped with.
  • Your playing career: the level, the seasons and a leadership role such as captain.

Don't

Former athlete seeking a coaching position where I can share my love of the game.

Do

Former college soccer player seeking an assistant coach role with a high school girls' program. Coached a U12 club team of 16 players for 3 seasons; SafeSport Trained and current in First Aid/CPR/AED.

An objective still needs proof: a team, a count of players and the credentials a program has to see.

Moving into coaching from another career, such as teaching another subject, the military or a business job, stay with newest-first order and open with your coaching evidence and certifications. Under older jobs, keep bullets that carry over to a team: training people, planning schedules, managing a budget. The career-change resume examples show the layout, and the cover letter is where you explain the move and name the program you want to join.

Coaching resume FAQ

Should I put my win-loss record on a coaching resume?

Yes, when it shows progress or context. Give the record with what changed, such as a turnaround from a losing season or a playoff run, and pair it with a development number like players signed or roster growth. A bare record with no starting point tells a reader little.

How do I list my playing career on a coaching resume?

In 1 line under your degree, or under Key Achievements: the sport, the level, the seasons and any captaincy or all-conference honor. Do not list it as a job unless you were paid to play professionally, and keep coaching results ahead of it.

What certifications do you need to coach high school sports?

Usually current CPR, AED and first aid training plus the courses your state association requires. Public high school coaches may need certification or mandatory courses, per the BLS, and each state sets its own list: Texas requires the UIL Coaches Certification Program every year, for example.

Do you need a degree to become a coach?

Not always. The BLS says coaches typically need a bachelor's degree, while youth league and part-time roles are less likely to require one. School jobs that pair coaching with teaching need a teaching license, and the NSCA's CSCS requires a bachelor's degree.

How do I list volunteer youth coaching on a resume?

Treat it like a job under Volunteer Experience: your role, the league or club, the city and the seasons. Add the age group, the roster size and 1 result, such as players who moved up to a travel team, so it reads as coaching experience.

How long should a coaching resume be?

1 page for assistants, first-time head coaches and most school coaches. Move to 2 pages after 10+ years or when you have run several programs, keeping your current job and certifications on page 1.

How do I list coaching and teaching at the same school?

Use 1 entry with both titles, such as Physical Education Teacher and Head Track Coach, and the school's dates. Split the bullets between the classroom and the team so each role has a result of its own.

Is the CSCS worth listing if I am not a strength coach?

Yes. Any coach who runs conditioning work can list it under Certificates with its issuer, the NSCA, and the date. NSCA certifications renew on a 3-year cycle, so keep the date current and back it with a conditioning result in your bullets.

How much do coaches make?

The BLS puts the median annual pay for coaches and scouts at $47,320 as of May 2025. Pay varies widely with the level, the sport and whether the role is a stipend on top of teaching; leave it off your resume and discuss it once you have an offer.
