Basketball Coach resume example

A basketball coach is hired to make players and teams better, and an athletic director wants to see that on paper. The level you coached, the teams you ran, the progress behind your records and your current safety training are what they check first. A won-lost record depends on the talent you inherited, so on its own it can undersell a good season or flatter a lucky one. Free-throw percentages, players moved up a level, roster growth and eligibility kept intact show your coaching in figures any program can compare.

How to Write a Basketball Coach Resume - Key Takeaways

  • List coaching jobs newest first on 1 page, and write the level, gender and team in every title line, such as Head Girls' Basketball Coach, Varsity.
  • Open with a 2- to 3-line summary that gives your years, your level and 1 program or player result you can count.
  • Back records with the figures behind them: shooting percentages, turnovers, points allowed, roster size and players who moved up a level.
  • Put coaching education, SafeSport status and CPR/AED and first aid cards under Certificates, each with its issuer and a date.
  • Keep your playing career to 1 line in Education or the summary, so your coaching results get the space.
  • Name the film and team apps you really use, then test the file in an ATS resume checker before you apply.

What athletic directors look for in a basketball coach resume

An athletic director, a club director or a head coach building a staff reads your resume for 3 things: the level you can coach, whether players got better under you, and whether you can be trusted with other people's kids. The BLS lists planning and running practice sessions, analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of athletes and opposing teams, and keeping records of athletes' and opponents' performances as core coaching duties. O*NET adds monitoring the academic eligibility of student athletes and keeping video records of team and opponent performance.

A basketball resume needs fewer sections than most. Use plain headings that ATS software and a busy principal both read at a glance:

  • Name, a headline such as Head Boys' Basketball Coach, and contact details
  • A short summary at the top, 2 to 3 lines, which needs no heading
  • Work Experience, with the current coaching job first
  • Skills, with the film and team software you use
  • Certificates, for coaching education and safety training
  • Education, with college basketball noted on the degree line
  • Optional: Volunteer Experience for camps and youth leagues, or Key Achievements for awards

Best format for a basketball coach resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your current coaching job first, then each earlier one with its title, the school or club and its location, and start and end months as MM/YYYY. Basketball careers climb in rungs a reader recognizes, from youth or freshman teams to JV, assistant varsity and head coach, and newest-first order makes each step plain. If you coach and teach at one school, give the coaching job its own entry so its results are not buried under classroom duties.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a basketball coach resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

One page covers most coaches, including assistants with several seasons at 2 schools. Go to 2 pages only after 10+ years with head coaching jobs at more than 1 program, and keep your 2 most recent coaching roles on page 1.

Basketball coach resume summary vs. objective

If you have run a team or held a staff role for a full season, write a resume summary. If your basketball so far is playing, camps or volunteer work, write a resume objective that names the role you want and the closest proof you have. Either way, give it your level, your years and 1 result a director can check.

Basketball coach resume summary formula

Role with X years coaching level and gender basketball, Y as highest role. Program or player result, with a number. Coaching education or safety credential.

Example

Girls' basketball coach with 11 years at the high school level, 6 as head coach. Took a 7-16 varsity team to 19-6 in 3 seasons and grew the program to 31 players. Completed NFHS Coaching Basketball; SafeSport Trained.

Don't

Passionate basketball coach dedicated to developing student-athletes on and off the court.

Do

Assistant varsity boys' basketball coach with 4 seasons in charge of defense and scouting. Cut points allowed from 61 to 52 a game in 2025-26 and broke down film on 20 opponents in Hudl. Holds a USA Basketball coach license.

Now a director sees the role, the part of the game this coach owns, one season's result and a credential.

How to write basketball coaching bullets with numbers

Give your current coaching job 3 to 4 bullets and earlier ones 1 to 3, each starting with a verb. Basketball is already counted in box scores, so most bullets can carry a figure a coach would track: a shooting percentage, turnovers, points allowed, roster size or a record over a set number of seasons. Write achievements on your resume rather than duties, and tie each number to the coaching that produced it.

Numbers that prove basketball coaching
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Team recordWins and losses before and after, seasons, postseason resultsRebuilt a 5-17 varsity team into a 14-9 district playoff winner within 2 seasons.
OffenseTurnovers, shooting percentages, points per gameLowered turnovers from 18 to 11 a game with a press-break package installed in preseason.
DefensePoints allowed, opponent shooting, reboundsSwitched to a pack-line defense and held opponents to 43 points a game, down from 54.
Player developmentAll-conference picks, players on college rosters, JV players promotedCoached 7 all-conference selections; 3 players went on to college rosters.
Program growthRoster size, feeder teams, youth league playersExpanded a grade 5-8 feeder league from 2 to 6 teams with 64 players.
Conduct and campsTechnical fouls, clinic enrollment, money raisedRan a 4-week summer shooting clinic for 55 players that raised $6,200 for team travel.

A head coach's current job covers the program, the team and player progress; the older job keeps 2 bullets, as the work experience section of a 1-page resume should.

Responsible for running practices.

Do

Planned 2-hour practices 6 days a week for 15 varsity players and added a 12-minute daily transition drill that raised fast-break points from 6 to 13 a game.

A director learns your practice load, your squad size and what changed on game night.

Don't

Helped players improve their skills.

Do

Ran 45-minute individual workouts for 9 guards each offseason; 3 earned all-league honors the next winter.

Where your playing career goes

Playing experience helps you get hired, but it is not a coaching job. Note college basketball on your degree line in Education, or in 1 summary line if you played professionally. Give it a Work Experience entry only if it was paid and recent, such as a season overseas, and keep coaching bullets above it.

Basketball coaching skills and software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the job ad, keeping only ones a bullet of yours backs up. A skills development coach leads with shooting mechanics and individual workouts; a head coach leads with program building, game strategy and staff management.

Hard skills for basketball coaches

  • Practice planning
  • Offensive and defensive systems
  • Scouting and film breakdown
  • In-game adjustments and substitutions
  • Shooting mechanics
  • Individual skill workouts
  • Strength and conditioning programs
  • Academic eligibility tracking
  • Youth and feeder program building
  • Injury prevention and emergency action plans

Soft skills athletic directors value

  • Clear teaching
  • Composure on the sideline
  • Communication with parents
  • Mentoring teenagers
  • Fairness in playing time
  • Organization across 3 teams

O*NET marks Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, Microsoft PowerPoint and Facebook as hot technology for coaches and scouts, which matches the work: stat sheets, practice plans, parent meetings and team pages. Add the film, scouting and play-diagram tools you really use, such as Hudl or FastDraw, and a team app like TeamSnap, when a job ad mentions them. Name each tool in a bullet too, such as the opponents you broke down in Hudl.

Coaching certifications, SafeSport and CPR on a basketball coach resume

The BLS says certification often requires coaches to be at least 18 and trained in CPR and first aid, and public high school coaches may need to be certified or complete mandatory education courses. Your state athletic association, and in some states state law, sets those rules, so list certifications on your resume in the order a job ad lists them, each with its issuer and the month you completed it. Club and AAU coaches add the credentials their organization requires.

Basketball coaching credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Fundamentals of CoachingNational Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS)An online NFHS Core Course approved for 12 clock hours; NFHS asks coaches to check that it meets their state association's rules.
Coaching BasketballNFHSA sport-specific online course approved for 5 clock hours, covering offensive and defensive teaching and game organization.
SafeSport TrainedU.S. Center for SafeSportThe Core course before any contact with minor athletes in the Olympic and Paralympic Movement, then 1 Refresher course every 12 months to keep the status.
USA Basketball coach licenseUSA BasketballRegistration for the season, a background screen and the required online courses.
CPR/AED and first aidAmerican Red Cross or American Heart AssociationA course from either issuer, listed with the month you completed it.

Some states also ask coaches for concussion, heat illness or sudden cardiac arrest training each season. List each one your state requires as its own line, so a district's compliance check finds it.

Sample Certificates section: high school head coach

Certificates

  • SafeSport Trained, U.S. Center for SafeSport, Refresher 2 completed 08/2026
  • CPR/AED and First Aid, American Red Cross, 06/2026
  • Coaching Basketball, NFHS, 07/2020
  • Fundamentals of Coaching, NFHS, 09/2015

How to list your degree, coaching minor and college basketball

Many coaches and scouts hold a bachelor's degree, the BLS says, though requirements vary and youth league and part-time coaches are less likely to need one. A degree in exercise science, kinesiology or physical education, or a coaching minor, helps at the high school and college level. When listing education on a resume, give the degree, the school and its town, and the month you graduated, with any college basketball on a line below.

If you also want a teaching job at the school, you must meet state licensing rules, including a background check, per the BLS. List the teaching certificate under Certificates with its state and subject, and keep Education to the degree itself.

Sample education entry: degree with a coaching minor

Education

B.S. in Exercise Science, Minor in Coaching05/2015
West Chester University of Pennsylvania | West Chester, PA

4 seasons, NCAA Division II women's basketball.

First coaching job and career-change basketball coach resumes

Most coaches start below the job they want: a middle school, freshman or youth team, a summer camp or a volunteer assistant spot. With no paid coaching role yet, use an objective and put your basketball evidence first, counted the same way a paid job would be.

  • Youth, AAU and club teams: age group, players, seasons and tournaments entered.
  • Camps and clinics: sessions run, campers per session and the skills you taught.
  • Volunteer assistant roles: the team, the level and what you ran, listed under Volunteer Experience.
  • Your playing career: level and seasons on the degree line, or 1 line in your objective.

Don't

Former college player seeking a coaching position to share my love of the game.

Do

Former NCAA Division III guard with 3 seasons coaching a 12U AAU team of 11 players, seeking a JV boys' basketball coach role. SafeSport Trained and NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching completed.

Playing history gets 1 phrase; the coaching proof gets the rest.

Moving in from teaching, the military, sales or another sport, stay with newest-first order, and open your current job's bullets with what transfers: groups you taught, schedules you ran, people you managed. A career-change resume works best when your basketball work, even 2 seasons of youth coaching, has its own entry with numbers.

Basketball Coach resume FAQ

Should I put my playing career on a basketball coach resume?

Yes, but keep it short. Note college basketball, with the division and seasons, on your degree line or in 1 summary line. Give it a Work Experience entry only if you were paid to play, and keep it below your coaching jobs.

How do I show a losing record on a basketball coaching resume?

Show the trend and what you improved. A team that went from 4 wins to 9, or cut turnovers from 20 a game to 14, tells a better story than the final record, and player numbers such as roster growth or college signings show progress even in a hard season.

What certifications does a high school basketball coach need?

Your state athletic association, and in some states state law, sets the list. Many ask for CPR/AED and first aid and a coaching course such as NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching, which NFHS says to check against your state's rules. List each one under Certificates with its issuer and date.

Do I need a teaching license to coach high school basketball?

Not always. Many districts hire walk-on coaches who do not teach. Coaches who also teach must meet state licensing rules, including a background check, per the BLS, so list a teaching certificate under Certificates if you hold one.

Should I list AAU, club or summer camp coaching on my resume?

Yes, if it shows coaching you have not done elsewhere. Give a paid club or AAU job its own Work Experience entry with the age group and results, and put unpaid camps or youth league teams under Volunteer Experience with player and session counts.

How long should a basketball coach resume be?

1 page for most coaches, assistants and first-time head coaches. Use 2 pages only if you have 10+ years and head coaching jobs at several programs, and keep your 2 most recent coaching roles on page 1.

How much do basketball coaches make?

Pay varies widely by level. Coaches and scouts earned a median of $47,320 a year in May 2025, per the BLS. Leave pay off your resume and discuss it at the offer.
