What a web developer builds is public: anyone can open the site, see how fast it loads and try it on a phone. Employers check which languages and frameworks you work in, what kinds of sites you have shipped, and whether those sites ran faster, worked for more people or got easier to update after your changes. The proof a development lead trusts pairs a site with a number, such as a product page that loads in under 2 seconds or a checkout form a screen reader user can finish.
How to Write a Web Developer Resume - Key Takeaways
- Pick reverse-chronological order and 1 page, moving to 2 only after about 10 years or several distinct stacks.
- Open with 2 to 3 lines naming your years, your main stack, the kind of sites you build and 1 measured result.
- Give each bullet a browser-side or server-side number: load time, accessibility issues fixed, pages migrated, conversion rate, releases or response time.
- List 6 to 8 skills from the job ad, with frameworks and CMSs by their exact names, and prove each one in a bullet.
- Put your portfolio or GitHub link in the application's website field, and name the sites you built inside your bullets.
- Send a PDF, after you run it through an ATS resume checker to confirm every framework name reads as text.
What hiring managers look for in a web developer resume
The BLS splits the job in 2: back-end web developers are responsible for the overall technical construction of a site, and front-end web developers build the features that shape how it looks. O*NET's core tasks for the occupation include writing supporting code, checking that code works across browsers and devices, building the databases behind a site, and testing it after every revision. A hiring manager reads your resume to see which of those you do every week and on what kind of site.
So name the side of the stack you work on, the type of site (agency client sites, an online store, a SaaS dashboard, a university or city site) and its size in pages, users or orders. Then organize the page into these sections:
- Name, headline (such as Web Developer, Front End) and contact details
- A 2- to 3-line profile at the top, which needs no heading
- Work Experience, with freelance and contract work as their own entries
- Skills, with your languages, frameworks and CMSs
- Education, including a certificate program or bootcamp
- Certificates, if you hold any
- Extras where they fit: Languages, Volunteer Experience, Key Achievements
Best format for a web developer resume
Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your newest job first, each with title, employer, city, plus the month and year you started and left (MM/YYYY). Web development careers usually step from junior to mid-level to senior or lead, often across agencies and in-house teams, and this order shows how your stack and responsibility grew. Students and career changers keep the same order and move Education higher instead of switching to a skills-first layout.
- Best for most web developersReverse-chronologicalYour jobs, newest first, with your results under each one.Best for: A steady work history in your field
- FunctionalSkills grouped up top, with a short work history below.Best for: Gaps or very little experience
- CombinationA skills section first, then your full work history.Best for: A career change with strong skills
One page holds most web developer careers up to about 10 years. A senior web developer or tech lead who has run several stacks, migrations or teams can use 2 pages, as long as the first page holds the 2 most recent jobs.
| Setting | What to use |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 page; 2 only with about 10+ years or several separate stacks |
| Job title line | Your title plus your side of the stack: Web Developer, Front End |
| Links | Portfolio or GitHub in the application's website field, and on your contact line if the template has room |
| Dates | Month and year (MM/YYYY) on each role; Present on the job you hold now |
| Photo and private details | Usually no photo; skip your birth date and marital status |
| File type | PDF with real text, never an image export of a design file |
Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo, and in web development the portfolio does the visual work. Keep the resume itself plain enough that an ATS reads every framework name as text.
Web developer resume summary vs. objective
Use one test: if you have been paid to build or maintain websites, write a resume summary with your years, your stack, your kind of site and 1 result. If you have not, write a resume objective that names the role you want and the best project you have shipped so far. Either way, keep it to 2 or 3 lines and take its number from a bullet below it.
Web developer resume summary formula
Title with X years building type of site in main stack. 1 measured result on speed, accessibility, migration or conversion. Certificate, specialty or the work you want next.
Example
Web developer with 6 years building agency client sites in WordPress, React and PHP. Rebuilt 14 client sites on 1 shared block theme and brought average mobile load time down to 2.2 seconds. Leads accessibility fixes for the agency's healthcare clients.
Don't
Passionate web developer with strong HTML, CSS and JavaScript skills, eager to build beautiful and responsive websites.
Do
Front-end web developer with 4 years building Shopify and Vue.js storefronts for 11 retail clients. Rewrote a checkout script so its interaction delay stayed under 200 ms on mid-range phones.
The second version names the platform, the client count and a result a lead can check in a browser.
How to write web developer work experience bullets with numbers
Write 3 to 4 bullets under your current job and 1 to 3 under older ones, each starting with a verb and ending with what changed. Write achievements on your resume, not the duties from your job description: "built landing pages" is a duty, while a page you rebuilt and the load time it reached is an achievement. Most of these numbers already sit in your analytics, your Lighthouse reports or your Git history.
For speed, use the measures Google calls Core Web Vitals. Google's web.dev defines a good page as one that reaches Largest Contentful Paint within 2.5 seconds, keeps Interaction to Next Paint at 200 milliseconds or less and holds Cumulative Layout Shift at 0.1 or less, measured at the 75th percentile of page loads. INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in 2024, so write INP for work since then.
| Area | What to count | Example bullet |
|---|---|---|
| Page speed | LCP, INP or CLS before and after, page weight | Cut LCP on the main product page from 3.8 to 1.9 seconds by lazy-loading images and splitting the JavaScript bundle. |
| Accessibility | WCAG level, issues fixed, pages audited | Fixed 47 contrast and form label errors in the checkout flow, bringing it to 0 failures against WCAG 2.2 AA. |
| Conversion | Form completions, sign-ups, orders | Raised quote form completions from 2.1% to 3.4% by cutting the form from 3 steps to 1. |
| Migrations and CMS work | Pages moved, redirects, downtime | Moved a 600-page site from Drupal 7 to WordPress in 10 weeks, mapping 1,100 redirects with 0 broken inbound links. |
| Releases and testing | Deploy frequency, failed releases, test coverage | Took the team from 2 releases a month to 8 by adding automated tests to every pull request. |
| Back end and APIs | Response times, queries, error rates | Brought the median API response from 480 to 95 ms by adding database indexes and Redis caching. |
Here is one agency developer's entry built that way. The current job names the client type in its first bullet, and the older role gets 2 shorter lines.
Work Experience
- Rebuilt 14 agency client sites on 1 shared WordPress block theme, cutting average mobile LCP from 4.1 to 2.2 seconds.
- Fixed 312 WCAG 2.2 AA issues across 6 healthcare client sites, from missing alt text to keyboard traps in menus.
- Built a React booking widget now running on 9 client sites and taking about 3,800 bookings a month.
- Set up GitHub Actions deploys for 20 sites, shortening a release from a 40-minute manual upload to 6 minutes.
- Moved 180 static HTML pages into PHP templates so editors could update them without a developer.
- Wrote a content editor guide that cut client edit requests from 2 days a week to half a day.
Don't
Responsible for maintaining the company website and installing updates.
Do
Applied about 35 plugin and core updates a month to the company's WordPress site, testing each on staging first, with 0 hours of unplanned downtime in 2025.
Maintenance work still has a volume, a method and an outcome.
Don't
Worked on front-end development using HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
Do
Replaced a jQuery product filter with a Vue.js component, cutting its response from 900 to 120 milliseconds across 2,400 SKUs.
Web developer skills, languages and frameworks for your resume
Your Skills section should hold 6 to 8 technical skills for your resume, each one named in the posting and backed by a bullet. HTML, CSS and JavaScript are the floor for every web developer job; the BLS says web developers need a thorough understanding of HTML and that many employers expect languages such as JavaScript or SQL. The rest of your list should follow the side of the stack you are applying for.
Hard skills for web developers
- Semantic HTML and modern CSS
- JavaScript and TypeScript
- Responsive and mobile-first layout
- Web performance (Core Web Vitals)
- Accessibility to WCAG 2.2 AA
- REST and GraphQL APIs
- SQL database design
- CMS theming and custom blocks
- Cross-browser testing
- Git and code review
Soft skills development leads value
- Turning a design file into working pages
- Explaining trade-offs to non-developers
- Estimating work honestly
- Careful debugging
- Taking review comments well
- Keeping clients informed
Write frameworks and platforms by their exact names, the way the job ad does. O*NET lists React, Vue.js, TypeScript, Node.js, WordPress, PHP, GraphQL, Git, MySQL and Docker among the hot and in-demand technologies for web developers. Pick the ones you have shipped with, put them in Skills, and name each again in the bullet where you used it, so a lead sees React next to the widget you built in it rather than in a list alone.
Portfolio, GitHub and certifications for web developers
No license is needed to work as a web developer, and BLS guidance adds that candidates may not need formal credentials if they can show their skills through prior work or projects. That makes your portfolio the main proof. Certifications are optional: list certifications on your resume under Certificates, naming who issued each one and the month you earned it, and add one when a job ad names it or when you have little paid experience.
| Certification | Issued by | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Certified Developer (Associate) | Amazon Web Services | An exam on developing, testing, deploying and debugging applications on AWS; AWS recommends 1 or more years of hands-on experience, and the certification is valid for 3 years. |
| Meta Front-End Developer Professional Certificate | Meta, through Coursera | A 9-course online series covering HTML, CSS, JavaScript and React, with no prior experience required. |
Where portfolio and GitHub links go
Most application forms have a website or portfolio field: fill it with the 1 link that shows your best work, and add it to your contact line as well if your template has room. A printed page or an ATS record cannot be clicked, so name the site or product in the bullet itself, so the reader knows what to look up. Link a GitHub profile only if its pinned repositories have a readme and recent commits.
Certificates
- AWS Certified Developer (Associate), Amazon Web Services, 04/2025
- Meta Front-End Developer Professional Certificate, Meta (Coursera), 11/2022
How to list a degree, certificate or self-taught web development training
The BLS puts the education web developers need anywhere from finishing high school to a bachelor's degree, with some employers asking for a degree in computer science or programming. For listing education on a resume, name the degree or program, where you studied (school and city) and the month you finished. Add your GPA only if it is 3.5 or higher and you graduated in the last 2 to 3 years.
A bootcamp or college certificate program goes under Education like a degree, with its full name and end date. If you are self-taught, skip the Education entry for the courses you took and let your Work Experience, freelance entries and portfolio carry the proof; a single course of 10 hours does not need its own line.
Education
GPA 3.6. Capstone: a scheduling web app for 4 campus clubs.
Entry-level, intern and career-change web developer resumes
With no paid developer job yet, use an entry-level resume layout: an objective, Education near the top, then every piece of real web work you have done, written with the same numbers a full-time job would get. Interns and students should lead with the program and its expected graduation date.
- Internships: the team, the pages or features you shipped, and what you measured before and after.
- Freelance sites for local businesses: a Work Experience entry under your own name, with the number of sites and what each owner can now do without you.
- Sites for a club, church or nonprofit: Volunteer Experience, with the page count and any visitor or sign-up numbers.
- Class and capstone projects: under Education, only when the project is live or in a public repository.
- Open-source contributions: merged pull requests and the project they went into.
Don't
Self-taught web developer looking for an opportunity to grow my skills.
Do
Bootcamp graduate seeking a junior web developer role. Built and launched 3 WordPress sites for small businesses and a React recipe app with 250 weekly users; all 3 sites score 95+ in Lighthouse accessibility audits.
The rewrite swaps a wish for 4 shipped projects and 2 numbers.
Coming from teaching, graphic design, marketing or IT support, stay with reverse-chronological order, and let your first developer job or certificate lead. Under the earlier career, keep 2 or 3 bullets that show work a web team needs, such as building course pages in a school's learning platform, writing spreadsheet scripts or explaining technical steps to non-technical people. A career-change resume leaves the reason for the move to the letter, and our software engineer cover letter examples show how to explain a switch into development in a few sentences.
Web Developer resume FAQ
Should I put a portfolio or GitHub link on a web developer resume?
Yes, if it shows finished work. Pick 1 link, a portfolio with 3 to 5 live projects or a GitHub profile whose pinned repositories have readmes, and put it in the application's website field and on your contact line where the template allows. Remove any project that no longer loads.
How long should a web developer resume be?
1 page for most developers. Move to 2 pages only after about 10 years, or when you have led work across several stacks or teams, and keep your 2 newest jobs on page 1. Older contract and agency work can shrink to 1 bullet each.
Do I need a degree to become a web developer?
Not always. BLS guidance puts the education range anywhere from high school to a bachelor's degree, and adds that candidates may not need formal credentials if prior work or projects show their skills. Larger employers and back-end roles ask for a computer science degree more often.
Should I list WordPress on a web developer resume?
Yes, if you have built themes, blocks or plugins in it, which is real development work. Say what you built, such as a custom block theme or a WooCommerce extension, rather than just WordPress, so the reader can tell coding from page editing.
Can one resume cover front-end and back-end web developer jobs?
Only as a starting file. Keep a master resume, then reorder your skills and bullets for each application so the side of the stack the job ad names comes first, and change your headline to match, such as Web Developer, Back End.
Are certifications worth it for web developers?
Sometimes. No certification is required for the job, so a strong portfolio beats one. A cloud certification such as AWS Certified Developer (Associate) helps for back-end roles that deploy to AWS, and a front-end certificate helps most when you have no paid experience yet.
How do I list freelance web development on a resume?
Give it a Work Experience entry with a title such as Freelance Web Developer, your own name or business name, your city and the dates. Write bullets about the number of client sites, the platforms and a result per client, and name 1 or 2 sites a reader can look up.
Should I mention web accessibility on my resume?
Yes, when you have done it. Public-sector work makes it a common ask: under a 2024 Department of Justice rule, state and local government websites must meet WCAG 2.1 Level AA, with the first compliance date on April 26, 2027 for larger governments. Name the standard, the level and what you fixed.
How much do web developers make?
BLS data put the median annual pay of web developers at $92,650 in May 2025. Pay varies with your stack, your city and the kind of employer, so leave salary off your resume and discuss it in the interview or the application form.
