Social Worker resume example

Social work is about connecting people with the services and support they need. A program director wants to see your license status, the populations you have served, the size of your caseload and the outcomes your work led to. Those numbers carry weight, but they come from real clients, so each one has to make its point without a name or any detail that could identify a family. With a few habits, your resume can show real results and still protect every client.

How to Write a Social Worker Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep the jobs in reverse-chronological order on 1 page, moving to 2 only after 10+ years or a supervisory role.
  • Put the program or population in each job title line, such as Social Worker, Foster Care and Adoption.
  • Give every bullet a count your supervisor already tracks: open cases, visits on time, referrals closed or placements made.
  • List your license first under Certificates, written exactly as your state titles it, with the issuing board and date.
  • Describe clients by group and number only, never by a name, initials or detail that could identify a family.
  • Before you apply, scan your resume with an ATS resume checker, since agency and hospital portals screen for license titles.

What hiring managers look for in a social worker resume

A program director or clinical supervisor reads your resume with 3 questions in mind: do you hold the license level this role needs, have you worked with a population like theirs, and can you carry the caseload while keeping documentation current. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook lists assessing clients' needs, strengths and support networks, referring and advocating for community resources, and maintaining case files among the core duties. For child, family and school social workers, O*NET adds developing service plans with clients and following up on how well those services worked.

Lay the resume out under headings that any application system will recognize:

  • Name, headline with your license (for example, Social Worker, LMSW) and contact details
  • A short summary or objective at the top
  • Work Experience, newest first, with the program or population in each title
  • Certificates: your license first, then NASW or other credentials
  • Skills, including the record systems you use
  • Education, with your field placements
  • Optional: Languages, and either a Key Achievements or a Volunteer Experience section

Best format for a social worker resume

Choose the reverse-chronological resume format and start with your current role: title and program, the agency, its location and an MM/YYYY date range. Social work careers are read through settings and license levels, from case aide to LMSW to LCSW or supervisor, and this order lets a reader follow that path in seconds. If you held 2 roles at one agency, keep them under 1 employer with separate titles and dates.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a social worker resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

One page covers most social workers through their first 10 years. A second page makes sense once you add supervision of other staff, program management, teaching or several distinct settings, provided your license and current role stay on page 1.

Social Worker resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 after 10+ years or once you supervise staff
DatesMM/YYYY for every job and license, Present for the current role
Job title lineTitle plus program: Social Worker, Hospice and Palliative Care
Client detailsGroups and counts only; no names, initials or case details
Personal informationA photo is usually left off in the US and Canada; leave out your SSN, age and marital status
File typePDF, or Word when a county or state portal requests it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. County, state and school district jobs often run through online application systems that copy your file into their own fields, so plain headings and a single-column reading order keep your license and dates where the system expects them.

Social worker resume summary vs. objective

One question decides it: if you have held a paid social work job, write a resume summary with your years, setting, license and 1 result. If you are finishing a BSW or MSW, waiting on your license, or coming from another field, write a resume objective that names the role you want, your license status and the field hours that prepared you. Keep either one to 2 or 3 lines and pull its number from your bullets.

Social worker resume summary formula

License social worker with X years in setting or population. 1 outcome for clients, with a number. Credential, or the next license you are working toward.

Example

Licensed master social worker with 6 years in child welfare and community health. Kept 9 of 10 sibling groups together in placement during 2025. LMSW in New York, with the C-ASWCM from NASW.

Don't

Compassionate social worker passionate about helping others and making a difference in the community.

Do

Hospital social worker with 4 years on medical and surgical floors, planning about 10 discharges a day. LMSW, sitting for the ASWB Clinical exam in 2027.

This version shows the setting, the daily volume and the next license step.

How to write social work experience bullets with numbers

Your current role gets 3 to 4 bullets; earlier roles get 1 to 4. Open with your caseload and setting, since every later number reads against it, then add outcomes your program already reports: visits completed on time, referrals that led to services, placements, discharges or group completion. Each bullet should read as one of your achievements on a resume, with a verb, a count and its base.

Numbers that prove social work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
CaseloadOpen cases, families, visits a monthManaged 22 open family cases across 3 school districts, with 2 home visits per family a month.
DocumentationNotes and assessments filed on timeRaised on-time progress notes from 71% to 96% in 6 months by blocking 1 hour a day for charting.
PermanencyReunifications, adoptions, placement movesFinalized 8 adoptions in 2025, up from 3 the year before.
Benefits and resourcesApplications filed, approvals, housing securedHelped 46 clients apply for SNAP or Medicaid, with 39 approved on the first application.
Discharge planningPlans a day, delays, safe dischargesWrote discharge plans for 9 to 12 patients a day on 2 medical floors and cut placement delays from 31 to 18 a quarter.
Groups and trainingSessions run, attendance, completionRan a weekly parenting group for 8 to 10 caregivers, with 75% completing all 12 sessions.

Here is one social worker's entry put together that way. The caseload leads, each result has its base, and the earlier job keeps a single line.

Sample entry: foster care and adoption social worker

Don't

Social work skills and software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting, and keep only the ones a bullet already proves. Assessment, case management and documentation fit almost every social work role; motivational interviewing, trauma-informed care or discharge planning belong only where your setting used them.

Hard skills for social workers

  • Psychosocial assessment
  • Case management
  • Service and safety planning
  • Crisis intervention
  • Motivational interviewing
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Discharge planning
  • Benefits and resource navigation
  • Court report writing
  • Group facilitation

Soft skills supervisors value

  • Active listening
  • Sound judgment under pressure
  • Clear, timely documentation
  • Cultural humility
  • Firm professional boundaries
  • Teamwork with courts, schools and clinics

Name your record system exactly as your agency calls it, then prove it in a work bullet describing what you did with it. O*NET marks Microsoft Office, Excel and Outlook as in demand among child, family and school social workers, and also lists electronic medical record software in health settings and student information systems in schools. If you built a caseload tracker in Excel or charted in a hospital EHR, say so in a bullet with a number.

LMSW, LCSW and social work certifications on a resume

Your license tells a reader which jobs you can legally take, so it goes first under Certificates. The BLS says all states require clinical social workers to be licensed, that some also license nonclinical social workers, and that requirements vary by state. New York and California both test with ASWB exams, which come in 4 categories (Bachelors, Masters, Advanced Generalist and Clinical), and ASWB asks candidates to apply to their state board first. List certifications on your resume below the license, each with the body that issued it and the month.

Social work licenses and credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
LMSW (New York)New York State Education Department, Office of the ProfessionsAn MSW from a CSWE-accredited program, the ASWB Masters exam and a minimum age of 21.
LCSW (New York)New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions36 months of supervised post-MSW experience in diagnosis, psychotherapy and treatment planning, with at least 100 hours of supervision, then the ASWB Clinical exam.
ASW registration and LCSW (California)California Board of Behavioral SciencesRegistration as an Associate Clinical Social Worker, passing the California Law and Ethics Exam while registered, 3,000 supervised hours over at least 104 weeks, then the ASWB Clinical exam.
C-SWCM (Certified Social Work Case Manager)National Association of Social Workers (NASW)A BSW; NASW specialty credentials are open to qualified and licensed social workers and renew every 2 years.
C-ASWCM (Certified Advanced Social Work Case Manager)National Association of Social Workers (NASW)An MSW; like the other NASW specialty credentials, it is for qualified, licensed social workers and renews every 2 years.
ACSW (Academy of Certified Social Workers)National Association of Social Workers (NASW)An MSW and NASW membership; it renews each year with your dues.

How to list a license in progress or a state-specific title

Copy the title your state board uses, since the same level goes by different names: New York issues an LMSW, while California registers Associate Clinical Social Workers on the way to the LCSW. If you are still collecting supervised hours, write the registration with your progress, such as Associate Clinical Social Worker (ASW), Board of Behavioral Sciences, 2,100 of 3,000 supervised hours. Add an exam that is booked with its month, and put LMSW or LCSW in your headline only after the board issues it.

Sample Certificates section: LMSW with an NASW credential

Certificates

  • Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW), New York, New York State Education Department, 08/2020
  • Certified Advanced Social Work Case Manager (C-ASWCM), National Association of Social Workers, 03/2024
  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, American Red Cross, 06/2026

How to list a BSW, MSW and field placement hours

BLS career data names a BSW (bachelor's in social work) as the most common requirement for entry-level nonclinical roles, while clinical social workers typically need a master's (MSW). MSW programs generally take 2 years, and some let BSW graduates finish in less. Both degrees include supervised field education: CSWE's accreditation standards set a minimum of 400 hours for bachelor's programs and 900 hours for master's programs.

Follow the standard order for listing education on a resume: the degree, then the school with its city, then the month you graduated, with the MSW above the bachelor's. In the line under the degree, give your field placement settings and total hours, plus a GPA if it is 3.5 or above and you graduated in the last few years. Once you hold a license and 3+ years of paid work, shorten that line to the settings or drop it.

Sample education entry: MSW with field placements

Education

Master of Social Work (MSW)05/2020
University at Buffalo | Buffalo, NY

Field placements: child welfare agency and outpatient mental health clinic, 1,000 hours. GPA 3.8.

Entry-level and career-change social worker resumes

Without paid social work experience, your field placements are your strongest evidence, so treat them like jobs. Open with an objective stating the setting you want and your license status (exam scheduled, passed or license issued, with the month), then show the hours and caseload you handled under supervision. The entry-level resume layout works if you have little else to list, and the social work intern resume fits if you are still in school.

  • Field placement: a Work Experience entry with the agency, dates, total hours and the number of clients or families you worked with.
  • Case aide, residential counselor or peer support jobs: a full entry with your shift duties and the people you supported each week.
  • Crisis line or shelter volunteering: under Volunteer Experience, with calls taken or nights covered.
  • A second language used with clients: under Languages, with the level you can work at.

Don't

Recent MSW graduate seeking a position where I can use my skills to help vulnerable populations.

Do

MSW graduate (05/2026) seeking a child welfare caseworker role, with the ASWB Masters exam scheduled for 11/2026. Completed 2 field placements totaling 960 hours and 2 years as a residential youth counselor.

A new graduate's objective still needs proof: a date, a setting and a count of hours.

Coming from teaching, nursing, HR or another field, stay with the reverse-chronological layout, but put the MSW and your license status first. Under older jobs, keep the bullets that carry over: crisis handling, case notes, family meetings, training or work with public agencies, and cut the rest to 1 line. The career-change resume page shows that layout. Why you changed fields belongs in your application letter, and the social worker cover letter examples show how to do it in 1 short paragraph.

Social Worker resume FAQ

Should I put LMSW or LCSW after my name on a resume?

Yes, once the board has issued it. Write the credential after your name in the headline, such as Social Worker, LMSW, and list the full license with its state, board and issue date first under Certificates. Before it is issued, give your exam date in the objective instead.

How do I list a social work license that is still pending?

Name the license you applied for, the board and where you stand: application submitted, ASWB exam scheduled with its month, or supervised hours logged against the total. Keep it under Certificates and leave the letters out of your headline until the license is issued.

Should I include my field placement on a social worker resume?

Yes, if you graduated in the last 2 or 3 years or are changing careers. List each placement as a Work Experience entry with the agency, dates, total hours and 2 to 3 bullets with counts. After several years of paid work, move it to 1 line under your degree or drop it.

How do I write about clients without breaking confidentiality?

Describe groups and numbers, never individuals. Write 18 families in kinship care or 40 hospice patients a quarter, and leave out names, initials, schools, exact ages and any story a reader could trace to a real case. The same rule applies to your cover letter and interviews.

How long should a social worker resume be?

1 page for new graduates and most social workers in their first 10 years. A 2-page resume suits supervisors, program managers and LCSWs with several settings, as long as your license and current role sit on page 1.

Do I need an MSW to work as a social worker?

Not for every role. The BLS says a BSW is the most common requirement for entry-level nonclinical positions, while clinical social workers typically need an MSW, supervised experience and a clinical license. Put your highest social work degree first under Education.

Can I list a license from another state when I apply?

Yes. List it exactly as issued, with the state and board, so the employer sees your level. Licensing rules vary by state, so if you are moving, add a line under it with your application status in the new state, such as application submitted 09/2026.

What software should a social worker list on a resume?

List the record system you used, named exactly as your agency or hospital calls it, plus Microsoft Office and Excel, which O*NET flags as in-demand for child, family and school social workers. Back each one with a bullet, such as building a caseload tracker or charting discharge plans.

How much do social workers earn?

Social workers earned a median of $61,780 a year in May 2025, per BLS wage figures. Pay varies with your license level, setting and state, so leave salary off your resume and discuss it when an offer is on the table.
