Psychologist resume example

Psychologists train for years before they hold a license: a doctorate, an internship and thousands of supervised hours. What a clinic director checks still comes down to a short list of questions. Who do you treat, which assessments and therapies can you run on your own, and where does your license stand? Answer each one with numbers from your caseload, the evaluations you write every month and the change your clients show on standard outcome measures.

How to Write a Psychologist Resume - Key Takeaways

  • List your roles newest first, on 1 page in training and 2 once licensed, and save your full publication list for a curriculum vitae.
  • Name the population, age range and setting under every job, then the number of clients you see each week.
  • Give bullets numbers a clinic tracks: sessions a week, evaluations a month, report turnaround, waitlist weeks and outcome scores.
  • List your state license first under Certificates, with the board and the month issued, then EPPP status and any ABPP board certification.
  • Early in your career, give the predoctoral internship and the postdoc their own Work Experience entries with supervised hours.
  • Run the file through an ATS resume checker so test names, therapy models and license terms survive the parse.

What clinic directors look for in a psychologist resume

A clinic director or hospital psychology chief starts with your license stage and the population you treat. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (2026) describes clinical and counseling psychologists as professionals who assess, diagnose and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders. O*NET (2026) rates assessing a patient's risk of harm to self or others as the most important task in the occupation, followed by documenting session notes, progress notes and treatment plans.

Build the resume from these sections, with the headings hiring software reads cleanly:

  • Name, headline (for example, Licensed Psychologist, PhD) and contact details
  • A 2 to 3 line summary at the top, printed without a heading
  • Work Experience, newest first, with the population and setting in each entry
  • Certificates: your state license first, then EPPP status and board certification
  • Skills, with your test batteries, therapy models and EHR
  • Education, with your doctorate and internship
  • Optional extras: achievements, volunteer work or a language you can hold sessions in

Best format for a psychologist resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: most recent role first, each with your title, the practice or hospital, its city, and the months you began and left in MM/YYYY form. Psychology careers move through set stages, from practicum to internship, postdoc and licensed staff role, and this order lets a reader follow each one. If you also teach or consult, list that work as its own entry in the same timeline.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a psychologist resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Clinical and hospital jobs want a resume of 1 to 2 pages, while university and research posts usually ask for a full record of every publication, grant and presentation. Know the difference between a resume and a curriculum vitae before you apply, and keep both versions up to date. Once you are licensed, 2 pages are normal, as long as your license and current role sit on page 1.

Psychologist resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page in training, 2 once licensed; a curriculum vitae only where an employer requests one
DatesMM/YYYY, with Present for the role you hold now
HeadlineCredential and degree after your name: Licensed Psychologist, PsyD
Publications2 to 4 recent ones that fit the posting; the full list stays on your curriculum vitae
Photo, age and family detailsLeave the photo off, as most clinics in the US and Canada expect, along with your date of birth, marital status and SSN
File typePDF, or Word where a health system's portal requires it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Hospital and group practice portals copy your file into their own fields, so plain headings and test names written out in full help it come through intact.

Psychologist resume summary vs. objective

Write a resume summary once you are licensed: your setting, your population, your main therapies and 1 result. Write a resume objective as a postdoc or when you apply for your first licensed role, naming the role you want and your expected license date. The test is your license: once the board issues it, write a summary.

Psychologist resume summary formula

License or status psychologist with X years in setting, treating population with therapies. 1 outcome or volume figure. Board certification or your next credential step.

Example

Licensed psychologist with 4 years in community mental health, treating adults with PTSD through CPT and prolonged exposure. Clients completing treatment averaged an 18-point drop on the PCL-5. Preparing an application for ABPP board certification in Clinical Psychology.

Don't

Compassionate, dedicated psychologist passionate about helping clients reach their full potential.

Do

Psychologist with 5 years in an integrated primary care clinic, seeing about 30 patients a week in 30-minute visits for depression, chronic pain and sleep problems. Licensed in Montana and trained in CBT for insomnia.

The second version names the setting, the volume, the license state and a specific method.

How to write psychologist work experience bullets with numbers

Under your current role, write 3 to 4 bullets; earlier roles get 1 to 3. Open with the population and the caseload, since every later figure reads against it, then add results your clinic already measures. Describe clients only in counts and groups, never with a detail that could point to one person. Frame achievements on your resume as changes you caused, with a starting point and a result.

Numbers that prove psychology work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
CaseloadClients a week, session format, share seen by videoSaw 22 clients a week in individual therapy, 30% of them by video through Zoom.
AssessmentEvaluations a month, report turnaroundCompleted 9 ADHD evaluations a month and cut report turnaround from 6 weeks to 3.
OutcomesPHQ-9, GAD-7 or PCL-5 change, sessions to goalLowered average GAD-7 scores from 14 to 8 over 10 sessions of CBT for generalized anxiety.
AccessWaitlist weeks, intakes a month, no-show rateShortened the intake waitlist from 9 weeks to 4 by adding 2 group orientation slots a week.
GroupsCohorts, group size, completionRan a 10-week CBT group for insomnia in which 7 of 9 members attended every session.
TrainingInterns and practicum students supervisedSupervised 3 doctoral interns, 2 of whom were licensed within a year of finishing.
Risk and safetyScreening rates, safety plans writtenScreened 100% of intakes with the C-SSRS and wrote a safety plan with every client who screened positive.

Here is how one psychologist's entry looks once the counts are in. The population and caseload lead, the results follow, and the postdoc keeps a single line.

Sample entry: psychologist in an adult outpatient clinic

Work Experience

Psychologist, Adult Outpatient10/2022 – Present
Tamsell Behavioral Health | Missoula, MT
  • Carry a caseload of 28 adults with mood, anxiety and trauma-related disorders, holding about 24 sessions a week in person and by video.
  • Complete 6 diagnostic evaluations a month with the WAIS-5, MMPI-3 and structured interviews, filing each report within 10 business days.
  • Track PHQ-9 scores at every fourth session; 61% of clients seen for 12+ weeks improved by 5 or more points.
  • Supervise 2 doctoral practicum students a year in assessment and CBT.
Postdoctoral Fellow, Clinical Psychology09/2021 – 08/2022
Wyndle Community Clinic | Kalispell, MT
  • Logged 1,900 supervised postdoctoral hours in therapy and assessment, including 35 integrated reports.

Don't

Conducted psychological assessments.

Do

Wrote 64 integrated assessment reports in a year for ADHD and learning disability referrals, each returned to the referring provider within 2 weeks.

The better version shows the volume, the referral type and the turnaround a clinic director plans around.

Don't

Provided individual and group therapy.

Do

Led a 12-week DBT skills group for 8 adolescents per cohort; 6 of 8 in the spring cohort completed every module.

Psychology skills, assessment tools and software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that match the posting and that your bullets already show. Psychological assessment and diagnosis belong on nearly every psychologist resume; neuropsychological batteries, forensic evaluation or play therapy only when you were trained in them.

Hard skills for psychologists

  • Psychological assessment
  • Diagnostic interviewing (DSM-5-TR)
  • Suicide risk assessment
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Trauma-focused therapy (CPT, PE)
  • Integrated report writing
  • Treatment planning
  • Group therapy
  • Clinical supervision

Soft skills clinic directors value

  • Clinical judgment
  • Steadiness in a crisis
  • Plain-language reports for families and physicians
  • Cultural humility
  • Firm ethical boundaries
  • Coordination with schools and medical teams

List your EHR and telehealth platform with your skills, and prove each one in a bullet. O*NET (2026) flags Zoom and Microsoft Teams as both hot and in-demand technologies for clinical and counseling psychologists, and eClinicalWorks as a hot technology. Write test batteries by the edition you gave: Pearson published the WAIS-5 in 2024 as the successor to the WAIS-IV, so a role that ended before then names the WAIS-IV.

Psychologist license, EPPP and board certification on a resume

Your license is the first line a hiring psychologist checks. Most states, the BLS noted in 2026, require a license to provide psychology services or to use the title psychologist, and most psychologists need supervised experience to qualify. Every one of ASPPB's 66 member jurisdictions requires a passing score on the EPPP Part 1 (Knowledge), and some also require Part 2 (Skills). Below the license, list certifications on your resume with the issuing body and the month earned.

Psychology licenses and certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Licensed PsychologistYour state board of psychologyA doctorate, the supervised hours your state sets and the EPPP; California, for example, requires 3,000 hours, at least 1,500 of them postdoctoral.
EPPP Part 1 (Knowledge)Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB)Required in all 66 ASPPB member jurisdictions, with a recommended passing score of 500; an integrated EPPP takes effect in the fourth quarter of 2027.
CPLEE (California Psychology Law and Ethics Examination)California Board of PsychologyTaken after 3,000 hours of supervised professional experience, at least 1,500 of them earned after the doctorate.
Board certification in Clinical Psychology (ABPP)American Board of Professional PsychologyA license for independent practice, an APA or CPA accredited doctorate, a 1-year internship, and 1 year in a postdoctoral program or 2 years of postdoctoral practice, then the specialty board's examination.
NCSP (Nationally Certified School Psychologist)National School Psychology Certification Board (NASP)Graduate preparation that meets NASP's credentialing standards; renewal takes 75 hours of continuing professional development every 3 years.

How to write the license line before and after licensure

Once licensed, write Licensed Psychologist, the state, the board and the month issued, and leave the license number off, since employers check it with the board. Before that, use the title you hold, such as Postdoctoral Fellow, and give your EPPP and expected license dates. PhD or PsyD goes after your name from the day the degree is conferred; Licensed Psychologist goes there only once the board issues it.

Sample Certificates section: licensed psychologist working toward board certification

Certificates

  • Licensed Psychologist, Montana, Montana Board of Psychologists, 09/2022
  • EPPP Part 1 (Knowledge), Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards, passed 06/2022
  • Board Certification in Clinical Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology, application in progress

How to list a PhD or PsyD, internship and postdoc

The BLS says clinical and counseling psychologists typically need a PhD in psychology or a PsyD, and that students in either program are usually required to complete an internship. PhD programs lean on research and end in a dissertation, while PsyD programs center on applied clinical work. School psychology also accepts an education specialist (EdS) degree.

Apply the standard approach to listing education on a resume: the degree, the school with its city, and the month the degree was conferred. Add the predoctoral internship as 1 line under the doctorate, and write APA-accredited if it was, since the APA Commission on Accreditation reviews internships and postdoctoral residencies as well as doctoral programs. Add the dissertation title only when it matches the job's population.

Sample education entry: doctorate with internship

Education

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Clinical Psychology08/2021
University of Montana | Missoula, MT

Predoctoral internship: Corrander Medical Center, Billings, MT, 07/2020 to 06/2021. Dissertation: sleep problems and relapse in adults treated for depression.

Postdoc, early-career and career-change psychologist resumes

As a postdoctoral fellow or newly licensed psychologist, your training is your experience. Give the internship and the postdoc their own Work Experience entries with the setting, population, supervised hours and assessments written, and open with an objective stating the role you want and your expected license date. Leaving research for clinical work? The PhD resume examples show how to turn lab years into job entries.

  • Predoctoral internship: a full entry with the site, rotations, hours and integrated reports written.
  • Practicum placements: 1 line each under Education, or a full entry if a site kept you for 2+ years.
  • Dissertation or research lab: a Work Experience entry when it involved participants, grants or a team you led.
  • Postdoctoral hours: the running total in your postdoc entry, so a clinic can see you will meet your state's count.
  • Crisis line or community work: under Volunteer Experience, with the shifts you covered or people served.

Don't

Recent PsyD graduate seeking a position where I can use my clinical skills and grow as a professional.

Do

PhD in clinical psychology (08/2026) in a postdoctoral residency in health psychology, seeking a staff role in primary care. EPPP Part 1 passed 07/2026; licensure expected 03/2027.

An early-career objective still needs dates: the degree, the exam and the license.

If you held a master's-level license, such as LPC or LMFT, before earning a doctorate, keep the newest-first layout and put the doctorate and your license status at the top. Keep your earlier clinical jobs, since years of caseload and supervision carry over, and see the career-change resume examples for the layout. A cover letter is the place to explain the move, with one of our healthcare cover letter examples as the model for its layout.

Psychologist resume FAQ

Should a psychologist send a resume or a curriculum vitae?

Send a resume to clinics, hospitals, group practices and agencies, and a curriculum vitae to universities, research centers and any training program that asks for one. The resume runs 1 to 2 pages and leads with clinical work; the curriculum vitae lists every publication, presentation, grant and training site.

Can I call myself a psychologist on my resume before I am licensed?

In most settings, no, not until your state board issues the license. Most states, the BLS says, require a license to use the title psychologist. Until then, write the title you hold, such as Postdoctoral Fellow or Psychology Resident, and put your EPPP status and expected license date under Certificates.

Where do my predoctoral internship and postdoc go on a resume?

Early in your career, list both as Work Experience entries with the site, dates, population, rotations and supervised hours. After a few years as a licensed psychologist, move the internship to 1 line under your doctorate and cut the postdoc down to 1 bullet.

Should I list the psychological tests I administer?

Yes, by full name and edition, such as WAIS-5, WISC-V, MMPI-3 or ADOS-2, and only tests you can administer, score and write up alone. Put the main batteries in Skills and show them in a bullet with the number of evaluations you complete each month.

How many publications should a clinical psychologist resume include?

2 to 4 recent publications or presentations are enough on a clinical resume, chosen for the posting's population or method. Put them in Key Achievements or in a bullet under the role where you did the work, and keep the full list for your curriculum vitae.

Does it matter on a resume whether I have a PhD or a PsyD?

Rarely for clinical jobs, since the BLS names both as the typical degree for clinical and counseling psychologists. Write the degree exactly as conferred, after your name and in Education. For research roles, add your dissertation and lab work; for clinical roles, lead with practicum and internship hours.

How long should a psychologist resume be?

1 page while you are in training, and 2 pages once you are licensed with several roles or a specialty such as assessment or supervision. Page 1 should hold your license line, your current role and the size of your caseload.

What is the median salary for a psychologist?

The BLS reports a median annual wage of $100,580 for clinical and counseling psychologists in May 2025, and $99,110 for psychologists overall. Pay varies by state, setting and specialty; leave it off your resume and discuss it once an offer is on the table.
