Finance resume example

Finance covers a lot of ground, from FP&A and investment research to treasury and budget analysis, and hiring managers start by checking which of those you work in. A general resume that tries to cover every track is easy to pass over. Once your track is clear, they look for the forecasts, budgets and models you owned, the software you use daily and the decisions your analysis supported. Aim at one track, and put a number behind every claim.

How to Write a Finance Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Use the reverse-chronological format on 1 page, moving to 2 only after 10+ years or several finance roles that each need room.
  • Name your finance track in the headline and summary, such as FP&A, investment research, treasury or budget analysis.
  • Give every bullet a finance number: forecast accuracy, budget size, variance thresholds, deal value or hours saved by automation.
  • List Excel, your BI tool and your planning or ERP system by exact name, then show each one inside a bullet.
  • Write CFA progress the way CFA Institute allows, such as Passed Level I of the CFA Program, and keep CFA after your name for charterholders.
  • Keep personal details off the page and test the file with an ATS resume checker before you send it.

What hiring managers look for in a finance resume

Hiring managers check your bullets against the core duties of the job. The BLS lists evaluating current and historical financial data, studying economic and business trends, and preparing written reports and presentations as core duties for financial analysts. O*NET adds advising on capitalization, such as amounts, sources and timing, and building presentations of plan details.

Show those duties as results, in sections an applicant tracking system can read:

  • Name, a headline with your track (for example, FP&A Analyst, FPAC) and contact details
  • A 2- to 3-line summary under the headline, which prints without a heading
  • Work Experience, starting with your current role
  • Skills, with Excel, your BI tool and your planning system inside it
  • Certificates, for the FPAC, CFA Program progress or FINRA exams
  • Education, with an MBA or master's above the bachelor's
  • Optional: Key Achievements, Volunteer Experience or Languages

Best format for a finance resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your current role first, each with your title, the employer, the city and MM/YYYY dates. Finance titles climb in a clear order, from analyst to senior analyst, manager, director and CFO, and this layout lets a reader see that climb in seconds. Only someone arriving from a field with little numbers work should lead with skills, using a combination layout that puts them ahead of the jobs.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a finance resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Fit your resume on 1 page while you are under 10 years in. A senior financial analyst, finance manager or director with budgets, deals or acquisitions in several roles can use 2 pages, as long as page 1 holds the current job and the strongest numbers.

Finance resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page, or 2 after 10+ years in finance
HeadlineYour track and credential: FP&A Analyst, FPAC or Investment Analyst, CFA
DatesMonth and year (MM/YYYY) on each job, with Present on your current one
Figures$4.5M and 60 basis points, written the way a finance team writes them
Personal detailsNo date of birth, marital status, Social Security number or account numbers
File typeA PDF, or a Word file when the application portal asks for one

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. A finance reader also expects a plain, aligned page with no charts or graphics, since the numbers inside your bullets do that job.

Finance resume summary vs. objective

Use one test: if you have held a finance role, write a resume summary that names your track, your years, the size of company you support and your best result. If you are a student or changing fields, write one of these resume objective examples instead: the finance role you want plus your strongest proof so far. Either way, take its number from a bullet below it.

Finance resume summary formula

Title with X years in finance track for type and size of company. Your strongest forecast, budget, model or savings result, with a number. Credential or CFA Program status.

Example

Senior financial analyst with 6 years in FP&A for a $220M medical device maker. Kept quarterly revenue forecasts within 2.5% of actuals for 6 quarters running. FPAC since 2025 and passed Level I of the CFA Program.

Don't

Results-driven finance professional with strong analytical skills, looking to add value to a dynamic organization.

Do

FP&A analyst with 4 years at a 310-store retail chain, owning the weekly sales forecast in SAP and Power BI. Held forecast error to 1.8% and freed 15 hours a week by automating the store P&L pack.

The second version names the track, the business, the systems and 2 results a finance manager can check.

How to write finance work experience bullets with numbers

Give your current role 3 to 4 bullets and older roles 1 to 3, each opening with a verb and closing on what changed. Finance already runs on measured work, so a bullet with no figure stands out for the wrong reason. Write achievements on your resume, such as a forecast that held or a cost that fell, instead of the tasks from your job description.

Numbers that prove finance work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
ForecastingForecast error, horizon, quarters in a rowBrought the annual EBITDA forecast within 3% of actuals for 4 straight quarters.
BudgetingCost centers, budget dollars, cycle lengthCoordinated a $65M operating budget across 22 cost centers.
Variance analysisThresholds, budget owners, report cadenceFlagged and explained each variance over $25K or 5% for 8 budget owners every month.
Modeling and dealsModels built, targets, deals closedBuilt DCF and LBO models for 7 acquisition targets; 2 deals closed.
Investment researchCompanies covered, calls, portfolio sizeCovered 18 mid-cap industrial stocks and published 11 buy or sell calls.
Treasury and capitalDebt, rates, interest savedHelped refinance $1.2B of debt 60 basis points lower, saving $4.5M a year in interest.
AutomationReports automated, hours savedAutomated 12 monthly reports with SQL and Power BI, saving 30 hours a month.

Here is one FP&A entry with numbers in each line. The current role shows forecasting, budgeting, reporting and a capital decision, and the earlier role keeps its 2 strongest results.

Sample entry: senior financial analyst in FP&A at a device maker

  • Write the monthly variance pack for the CFO and 4 VPs, covering every line over $50K or 4% against plan.
  • Scored 5 capital requests worth $14M on NPV and payback; leadership approved 3.

The rewrite says what the model covered and who decided something with it.

Don't

Finance skills and software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting that your bullets already back up, and let your results carry the soft skills. Forecasting, budgeting and variance analysis fit almost every finance resume; valuation, credit analysis or treasury only where you have done the work.

Hard skills for finance roles

  • Financial modeling
  • Forecasting and budgeting
  • Variance analysis
  • Three-statement modeling
  • DCF valuation
  • Scenario and sensitivity analysis
  • Cash flow forecasting
  • Capital budgeting (NPV, IRR)
  • Financial statement analysis
  • Management reporting

Soft skills finance managers value

  • Turning numbers into a recommendation
  • Presenting to executives
  • Business partnering
  • Judgment with confidential data
  • Working to close and board deadlines
  • Clear written commentary

Put your software with your skills, then show each system again in a bullet. O*NET flags Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, SAP software, SQL, Microsoft Power BI and Tableau as in-demand technology for financial and investment analysts, and lists Workday, Oracle PeopleSoft, Alteryx and VBA as hot technology. If the job ad names a planning tool such as Anaplan or Oracle Hyperion and you have used it, copy that name exactly. For Excel, name what you build in it: pivot tables, INDEX MATCH, data tables for sensitivities and VBA macros.

CFA, FPAC and FINRA exams: how to list finance certifications

Put your certifications on your resume in one Certificates section, each with its issuer and year. The CFA charter fits investment roles, the FPAC fits FP&A and corporate finance, and FINRA exams fit roles that sell or recommend securities. The BLS calls FINRA the main licensing organization for the securities industry and notes that employers usually sponsor licensure, so most candidates do not hold it before they start.

Finance certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
CFA charter (Chartered Financial Analyst)CFA InstitutePass all 3 CFA Program exams, document 4,000 hours of investment work over at least 36 months, and become a regular CFA Institute member.
FPAC (Certified Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis Professional)Association for Financial Professionals (AFP)Pass a 2-part exam; hold a bachelor's degree (a non-finance degree also needs finance coursework or an approved credential) and 3 years of FP&A work (2 with a finance-related master's), spending at least 50% of your time on FP&A, all within 5 years of enrolling.
SIE (Securities Industry Essentials) ExamFINRAOpen to anyone 18 or older with no firm needed; a pass stays valid for 4 years.
Series 7 (General Securities Representative)FINRASponsorship by a FINRA member firm, and a pass on the SIE, its corequisite.
CPA (Certified Public Accountant)Your state Board of AccountancyThe CPA Exam plus your state's education and experience rules; common in corporate finance roles that sit close to accounting.

How to list CFA Program progress

CFA Institute sets the wording. Write Passed Level I of the CFA Program under Certificates, and use CFA Program candidate only while you are registered for an exam or waiting for results. Never put CFA Level I after your name or add an expected charter date: CFA Institute says an exam level is not a designation, and only charterholders write CFA after their name.

Sample Certificates section: FPAC and CFA Program progress

Certificates

  • FPAC, Certified Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis Professional, Association for Financial Professionals, 2025
  • Passed Level I of the CFA Program, CFA Institute, 2024

How to list a finance degree or MBA

Financial analysts typically need a bachelor's degree, according to the BLS, in finance or a related field such as business. Follow the standard rules for listing education on a resume: degree, school, city and graduation date, with your GPA only while you are within 2 to 3 years of graduating and it is 3.5 or higher. Once you have a full-time finance job, Education moves below Work Experience.

The BLS notes that a master's degree in finance or business administration may improve an analyst's chances of advancing. List an MBA or master's above your bachelor's, with its concentration, and keep a part-time or executive program's dates honest, since it often overlaps your current job.

Sample education entry: finance degree

Education

B.S.B.A. in Finance05/2020
University of North Carolina at Charlotte | Charlotte, NC

Finance concentration. GPA 3.6.

Entry-level and career-change finance resumes

Without a full-time finance role yet, follow an entry-level resume layout: a short objective, then Education, then every piece of evidence that you can already do analyst work. Each item gets the same kind of number a full-time job would.

  • Finance or FP&A internships: reports you built, business units you supported, models you updated.
  • Student investment funds or case competitions: companies you pitched, fund size, placing.
  • The SIE exam: open without a sponsoring firm, so a pass is proof you can earn before your first job.
  • Treasurer roles for a club or nonprofit: the budget you managed and the reports you sent, listed under Volunteer Experience or Key Achievements.

Don't

Motivated finance graduate seeking an opportunity to grow my skills in a fast-paced company.

Do

Finance graduate with a 12-week FP&A internship, seeking an analyst role. Built monthly variance reports for 6 business units in Excel and Power BI, and passed the SIE in 2026.

An objective still needs proof: an internship, a scope and an exam.

Moving from accounting, banking or operations, keep reverse-chronological order and lead your current job with its most analytical bullets, such as forecasts, cost models or variance reviews. A career-change resume also puts the finance track you want in the headline. Explain the move in your cover letter; these finance cover letter examples show how to do it in a short paragraph.

Finance resume FAQ

Can I put CFA on my resume before I earn the charter?

No, not after your name. CFA Institute allows lines such as Passed Level I of the CFA Program, or CFA Program candidate while you are registered for an exam or awaiting results. Put that line under Certificates, and never add an expected charter date.

How long should a finance resume be?

One page for most analysts and anyone under 10 years in. A finance manager, director or CFO with several roles full of budgets, deals or acquisitions can use 2 pages, with the current role and the largest numbers on page 1.

Which Excel and modeling skills belong on a finance resume?

Name the work, not a level. Write the models you build, such as three-statement, DCF or driver-based forecasts, and the functions behind them, such as pivot tables, INDEX MATCH, data tables or VBA. Then show 1 model in a bullet with its scope and the decision it supported.

Do I need a FINRA license before I apply for finance jobs?

Usually not. The BLS says some securities roles need FINRA licensure but employers usually sponsor it, and FINRA requires firm sponsorship for the Series 7. The SIE is the exception: anyone 18 or older can take it, so a pass is worth listing under Certificates.

Should I list the FPAC or the CFA on an FP&A resume?

List every one you hold, with the FPAC first on an FP&A resume. AFP built the FPAC around FP&A work, while the CFA charter needs 4,000 hours of investment work. Either way, the issuer's exact name and the year go under Certificates.

How do I show confidential company numbers on a finance resume?

Round them or turn them into rates. Write a $50M+ budget instead of the exact figure, or a forecast held within a few points of actuals, and use percentages for margins and savings. Never share deal names, client names or numbers that are not public.

How do I move from accounting to finance on my resume?

Lead with the forward-looking part of your accounting work. Put variance analysis, budgets, cost models and forecasts in your first bullets, name the finance track you want in your headline, and keep the close and reconciliation work to 1 or 2 lines per role.

Should a finance resume include a GPA?

Only while you are a student or within 2 to 3 years of graduating, and only at 3.5 or higher. After that, your forecasts, budgets and models matter more, so keep the degree, school and date and drop the GPA.

Should I put salary expectations on a finance resume?

No. Save pay for the application form or the interview. As a benchmark, the BLS reports that the median annual wage for financial and investment analysts was $102,740 in May 2025; your offer depends on your track, your city and your level.
