Accounting is all about accuracy, and your resume should reflect that. Hiring managers want to see more than a list of responsibilities. They're looking for experience with financial reporting, tax preparation, accounting software, and measurable results. The challenge is presenting all of that without turning your resume into a wall of numbers. Here's how to get it right.
How to Write an Accountant Resume - Key Takeaways
- Use the reverse-chronological format on 1 page, or 2 if you have 10+ years.
- Open with a 2- to 3-line summary that names your years, your industry, your systems and your best close, reconciliation or audit result.
- Give every bullet an accounting number: days to close, accounts reconciled, variance thresholds, PBC items or audit adjustments.
- List the exact systems from the job ad, such as NetSuite, SAP or QuickBooks, with your skills and again inside your bullets.
- Put CPA after your name only once your state board issues the license; until then, list the exam sections you have passed under Certificates.
- Leave personal details off, then run the file through an ATS resume checker before you apply.
What recruiters look for in an accountant resume
An accounting manager reads your resume for proof that your numbers were right, that they were on time, and that you can produce them in their system. The BLS names examining financial statements, computing taxes and maintaining financial records as core duties, and O*NET adds reviewing accounts for discrepancies and preparing adjusting journal entries. Your bullets should show those tasks with their volume and result.
Use these sections, with names an applicant tracking system reads without trouble:
- Name, headline (for example, Senior Accountant, CPA) and contact details
- Summary: 2 to 3 lines at the top, with no heading needed
- Work Experience, newest job first
- Skills, including your software
- Certificates
- Education
- Optional: Key Achievements, Volunteer Experience or Languages
Best format for an accountant resume
Use the reverse-chronological resume format: most recent job first, each with your title, the employer, the city and MM/YYYY dates. Accounting careers move in visible steps, from staff to senior, supervisor, manager and controller, and this format shows that climb. Switch to a combination format, with a skills block above your history, only if you are moving into accounting from an unrelated field.
- Best for most accountantsReverse-chronologicalYour jobs, newest first, with your results under each one.Best for: A steady work history in your field
- FunctionalSkills grouped up top, with a short work history below.Best for: Gaps or very little experience
- CombinationA skills section first, then your full work history.Best for: A career change with strong skills
Keep it to 1 page if you have under 10 years of experience. A 2-page resume suits a senior accountant, controller or audit manager whose work spans several entities, systems or audit cycles, as long as page 1 carries the 2 most recent roles.
| Setting | What to use |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 page, or 2 with 10+ years of experience |
| Dates | MM/YYYY, with Present for your current job |
| Font | A plain sans serif at 10 to 12 pt for body text |
| Margins | 0.5 to 1 inch on every side |
| Photo and personal details | Usually no photo in the US and Canada; never a birth date or marital status |
| File type | PDF, unless the job ad asks for a Word file |
Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo, and an accounting recruiter wants a clean page an applicant tracking system can parse line by line.
Accountant resume summary vs. objective
Write a summary if you have accounting experience: 2 to 3 lines that name your level, your industry, your system and your best result. Write an objective if you have no accounting job yet: the role you want plus the strongest evidence you have so far. Our accountant summary and objective examples show both for different career stages. Write either one last, and borrow its number from your bullets.
Accountant resume summary formula
Title with X years in industry or practice area, working in ERP. Your strongest close, reconciliation or audit result, with a number. Credential or CPA Exam status.
Example
Accountant with 6 years in audit and manufacturing accounting, working in NetSuite. Cut the monthly close for a 3-entity, $48M packaging company from 9 to 5 business days. Passed 3 of 4 CPA Exam sections, with licensure expected in 2027.
Don't
Detail-oriented accounting professional with strong GAAP knowledge, seeking a challenging role at a growing company.
Do
Staff accountant with 3 years in a regional CPA firm's audit practice, auditing clients on SAP and QuickBooks. Tested receivables and payroll for 14 clients and drafted 6 management letter comments. Passed FAR and AUD in 2026.
The second version gives a level, a practice area, the systems, a volume and a credential status in 3 sentences.
How to write accountant work experience bullets with numbers
Under your current job, write 3 to 4 bullets that start with a verb and end with a result; older roles get 1 to 3. Accounting work is already measured in days, dollars and counts, so almost every bullet can carry a number your next manager would recognize. Show achievements on your resume, not duties copied from your old job description.
| Area | What to count | Example bullet |
|---|---|---|
| Month-end close | Business days to close, entities, journal entries | Closed the books for 2 entities by business day 4, down from day 7. |
| Reconciliations | Accounts per month, dollars cleared, aged items | Reconciled 35 balance sheet accounts monthly and cut items older than 60 days from 27 to 3. |
| Variance analysis | Thresholds, budget lines, people you report to | Explained every budget variance over $10K or 10% for 6 department heads each month. |
| Audit support | PBC requests, findings, adjustments | Delivered 80 PBC requests on the agreed dates; the audit closed with 1 adjustment. |
| Receivables and payables | Invoices, DSO, discounts captured | Cut DSO from 52 to 41 days by moving 120 customers to ACH payments. |
| Systems | Migrations, entries automated, accounts mapped | Moved 3 entities from QuickBooks to NetSuite and rebuilt a 210-account chart of accounts. |
Here is one accountant's entry with those numbers in place. Each bullet names the scale (entities, accounts, dollars), and the older role gets fewer lines.
Work Experience
- Cut month-end close from 9 to 5 business days for 3 entities by moving 14 recurring journal entries into NetSuite templates.
- Reconciled 42 balance sheet accounts each month and cleared $186K in reconciling items older than 90 days.
- Wrote the monthly flux analysis for the controller, explaining every P&L variance over $25K or 5% against budget.
- Tested revenue and inventory for 11 audit clients with $5M to $60M in annual revenue.
- Drafted 9 management letter comments on control gaps; clients fixed 7 before the next year-end.
Don't
Assisted with the annual audit.
Do
Prepared 64 PBC schedules for the FY2025 external audit, which closed with 0 proposed adjustments.
The rewrite names the deliverable, the volume and the outcome an auditor would check.
Don't
Handled accounts payable for the company.
Do
Processed 1,400 vendor invoices a month and captured $31K a year in early-payment discounts by moving 60 vendors to 2/10 net 30 terms.
Accounting skills and software for your resume
Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the job ad that your bullets already prove, and let your results show the soft skills below. GAAP and reconciliations belong on almost every accountant resume; tax, fixed assets or intercompany work only where you have done it.
Hard skills for accountants
- US GAAP
- Month-end and year-end close
- Account reconciliations
- Journal entries and accruals
- Variance (flux) analysis
- Financial statement preparation
- Audit support and PBC schedules
- Fixed asset accounting
- Intercompany accounting
- Sales and use tax
Soft skills accounting managers value
- Attention to detail
- Deadline management
- Clear written explanations
- Confidentiality
- Analytical thinking
- Working with auditors
List your systems with your skills, then name each one again inside a bullet so the reader sees what you did in it. O*NET flags Microsoft Excel, SAP software and Intuit QuickBooks as in-demand technology for accountants and auditors. If the job ad names Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics, Sage 50 or Workday and you have used it, write that exact name. For Excel, list functions: pivot tables, XLOOKUP and Power Query tell a controller more than advanced Excel does.
CPA, CMA and EA: how to list accounting certifications
List certifications on your resume in their own Certificates section, each with the issuing body and the year, so a recruiter scanning for CPA, CMA or EA finds them in one place. The CPA matters most on the public accounting and audit track: according to the BLS, any accountant who files a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission must be a licensed CPA, and CPAs are licensed by their state's Board of Accountancy. The CMA fits corporate and management accounting, and the EA fits tax work, such as a tax accountant role.
| Credential | Issued by | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| CPA (Certified Public Accountant) | Your state Board of Accountancy | Pass the 4-section CPA Exam (AUD, FAR and REG, plus 1 of BAR, ISC or TCP) and meet your state's education and experience rules. |
| CMA (Certified Management Accountant) | IMA | Active IMA membership, a bachelor's degree or related professional certification, Parts 1 and 2 of the exam passed within 3 years, and 2 continuous years of management accounting or financial management experience. |
| EA (Enrolled Agent) | IRS | Pass all 3 parts of the Special Enrollment Examination within 3 years, hold a PTIN and pass a suitability check. The IRS calls it the highest credential it awards. |
Where to put a CPA in progress
Until the license is issued, list each CPA Exam section you have passed, with its date, under Certificates, and add the scheduled section and your expected licensure year. Repeat the status in 1 line of your summary, and keep CPA off your name line and headline until the license arrives.
Certificates
- CPA Exam: Financial Accounting & Reporting (FAR), passed 11/2025
- CPA Exam: Auditing & Attestation (AUD), passed 03/2026
- CPA Exam: Taxation & Regulation (REG), passed 08/2026
- CPA Exam: Business Analysis and Reporting (BAR), scheduled 01/2027; licensure expected in 2027
How to list your accounting degree and 150 credit hours
Accountants typically need at least a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, according to the BLS. Follow the usual rules for listing education on a resume: degree, school, city and graduation date, with your GPA only if it is 3.5 or higher and you graduated in the last 2 to 3 years. With more experience than that, Education sits below Work Experience and stays short.
The traditional CPA requirement, as the BLS describes it, is 150 semester hours of college coursework, 30 more than a typical 4-year degree. NASBA reports that new licensure pathways changing the education and experience rules are being adopted across the country. In Ohio, for example, a bachelor's degree with the required accounting and business credits qualifies you for the exam, with extra experience required at licensure. If you have 150 hours, say so on the degree line, and check your state board's rules before you write an expected license date.
Education
150 semester hours completed.
Entry-level and career-change accountant resumes
With no full-time accounting job yet, use an entry-level resume layout: a short objective, Education near the top, then everything that shows you can do the work. Give each item the same numbers a full-time job would get.
- Audit or tax internships: clients tested, returns prepared, busy-season hours.
- Volunteer tax preparation clinics: returns prepared and e-filed in a season, listed under Volunteer Experience.
- Bookkeeping for a club, family business or student group: budget size, reconciliations and the software you used.
- Coursework, under Education: only when it used real tools, such as a full close simulation in QuickBooks.
Don't
Recent accounting graduate seeking an entry-level position to gain experience.
Do
Accounting graduate with a 10-week audit internship at a regional CPA firm, seeking a staff accountant role. Tested cash and payables for 4 clients and passed FAR in 2026.
Even an objective needs proof, such as an internship, a client count or an exam section.
Coming from bookkeeping, accounts payable, banking or store management, keep reverse-chronological order and open with a summary or objective that names the accounting work you already do, such as reconciliations, accruals or inventory counts. A career-change resume reads best when the first 3 bullets under your current job are its most accounting-heavy tasks. Save the reason for the switch for your cover letter: our accountant cover letter examples show how to cover it in 2 or 3 sentences.
Accountant resume FAQ
Can I put CPA on my resume before I am licensed?
No. Use CPA after your name or in your headline only once your state Board of Accountancy issues the license. Until then, list each CPA Exam section you have passed with its date under Certificates, and add the year you expect to be licensed.
How long should an accountant resume be?
Use 1 page if you have under 10 years of experience. With 10+ years across several entities, systems or audit cycles, 2 pages work if page 1 holds your 2 most recent roles.
What accounting software should I list on my resume?
List the systems the job ad names that you have used, by their exact names, and only those you could work in from day 1. A short list of 4 to 6 systems, each backed by a bullet, reads better than a long list of tools you have only seen.
Do I need a CPA license to get an accounting job?
Not for every role. The BLS says accountants typically need a bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, that any accountant who files a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission must be a licensed CPA, and that others choose the license to improve their job prospects. On the public accounting track, show your exam progress on your resume.
How do I list public accounting experience on an industry resume?
Give the firm its own Work Experience entry with your title, such as Audit Associate, and the dates. Then write bullets an industry controller can use: how many clients you audited, their size, and the areas you tested, such as revenue, inventory or payroll.
How do I show a CPA license from another state?
List it under Certificates with the board that issued it and the year, such as Missouri State Board of Accountancy, 11/2019. Before you apply in a new state, check that state board's rules for practicing with an out-of-state license, and name your licensing state in your summary.
Should I include my salary expectations on an accountant resume?
No. Leave pay for the application form or the interview. For a benchmark, the BLS reports that the median annual wage for accountants and auditors was $83,680 in May 2025; your offer will depend on your state, your industry and your credentials.
Should an accountant put a GPA on their resume?
Only if you graduated in the last 2 to 3 years and your GPA is 3.5 or higher. After your first full-time accounting job, your close, reconciliation and audit results say more, so drop the GPA and keep the degree, school and date.
