21 CPA Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

CPA resume example

Three letters after your name tell an employer you passed a hard exam and met your state's rules. They don't say what you did with the license. A partner or controller wants to know which side of the work you're on, whether audit, tax, advisory or corporate reporting, how big the clients or entities were, and which deadlines you owned. Your headline answers the first question in seconds. The rest of your resume answers the others with engagements, returns and filings, each one carrying a number.

How to Write a CPA Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Use the reverse-chronological format on 1 page, moving to 2 once you have 10+ years or manage work across several practice areas.
  • Put CPA in your headline only after your state board issues the license, and name your licensing state in the summary.
  • Open with a 2- to 3-line summary naming your practice area, the clients or entities you serve and 1 measured result.
  • Count what partners and controllers count: engagements led, returns signed, filings made on time and hours against budget.
  • Make the license the first line under Certificates, with the board and the date issued, then add a CMA or CFF only if you hold it.
  • Name your audit, tax and ERP software exactly, then check it in an ATS resume checker before you apply.

What partners and controllers look for in a CPA resume

A CPA resume lands with an audit or tax partner, a controller or a CFO, and each of them starts with 2 checks: is the license active, and does your practice area match the opening? The BLS is explicit: any accountant who files a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission must be a licensed CPA, so public companies and the firms that audit them screen for the license first. After that, the reader wants the size and type of work you handled.

O*NET's task list for accountants and auditors shows how wide that work runs: preparing and examining financial statements, computing taxes and preparing returns, and writing detailed reports on audit findings. Pick the tasks that match the job you want and give each its volume. Arrange the page with these sections:

  • Name and a headline with your practice area, such as Tax Manager, CPA
  • A short summary under the headline, printed without a section title
  • Work Experience, current role first
  • Skills, with your audit, tax and ERP software included
  • Certificates, with the CPA license on the first line
  • Education, including a master's degree or your 150-credit total
  • Either Key Achievements or a Volunteer Experience section, plus Languages if you use them at work

Best format for a CPA resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format, newest role first, with the title, employer, city and MM/YYYY dates on every entry. Public accounting has a ladder hiring partners know by heart, from staff to senior, manager, senior manager and partner, and promotions inside one firm read best as separate titles under that firm's name. This format puts that climb where the reader looks first.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a CPA resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Stay on 1 page through your first 10 years. Managers, directors and partners with many engagements can use 2, and so can a CPA aiming at a CFO seat, provided page 1 still holds the license line, the summary and your current role.

CPA resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page under 10 years; 2 pages for managers, directors and partners
HeadlinePractice area plus credential: Audit Senior, CPA
License lineFirst entry under Certificates: CPA, the state board, the month and year issued
DatesMM/YYYY on every role, and Present for the one you hold now
Fonts and marginsOne readable typeface such as Calibri or Arial, 10.5 to 12 pt, margins near 0.75 inch
Photo and personal detailsUsually no photo in the US and Canada; leave off age, marital status and your Social Security number
FileA PDF named with your name and CPA, unless the firm's portal wants Word

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Client confidentiality matters as much as layout here: describe audit and tax clients by industry and size, such as a $90M distributor, rather than by name, unless the work is already public record.

CPA resume summary vs. objective

Write a summary if you hold the license or have 2+ years in accounting: 2 to 3 lines with your practice area, the clients or entities you serve and your strongest result. Use an objective only while you are still sitting for exam sections with little full-time work behind you, and name the role you want plus the sections passed. These accountant summary and objective examples show both at different career stages. If you can name a practice area and a number, you are ready for a summary.

CPA resume summary formula

Practice area CPA licensed in state with X years serving client or entity type. Biggest engagement, return or reporting result, in figures. Specialty credential, system or industry focus.

Example

Audit CPA licensed in Pennsylvania with 10 years serving manufacturers and school districts. Leads 6 engagements a year for clients with up to $140M in revenue and cut recurring fieldwork from 11 to 8 days. Holds the CMA and runs every file in Caseware.

Don't

Licensed CPA with extensive experience in accounting, tax and auditing, seeking a challenging role where I can add value.

Do

Tax CPA with 7 years in a regional firm's private client group, preparing and reviewing about 300 individual and trust returns each season. Represented 25 clients in IRS examinations and notices last year.

The rewrite commits to 1 practice area and proves it with a volume a tax director can compare.

How to write CPA work experience bullets with numbers

Give your current role 3 to 4 bullets and older roles 1 to 3, each opening with a verb and closing on a number. CPA work is measured in engagements, returns, filings, hours and deadlines, so a reader can set your bullets beside their own team's figures. The general advice on listing work experience on a resume holds, with one addition for CPAs: name clients by industry and size, never by company name.

Numbers that prove CPA work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
External auditEngagements, client revenue, team size, findingsRan fieldwork on 9 credit union and insurance audits a year, leading teams of 2 to 4 staff.
Tax complianceReturns prepared or reviewed, entity types, deadlines metReviewed 180 S corporation and partnership returns per season, with every filing in by the extended deadline.
IRS and state representationNotices answered, examinations settled, penalties abatedSettled 14 IRS examinations in 2025 and won penalty abatement on $62K for 9 clients.
SEC and financial reporting10-K and 10-Q filings, days ahead of deadline, disclosuresPrepared 3 quarterly 10-Q filings and the annual 10-K, each filed 3 days ahead of the SEC deadline.
Internal controlsControls tested, business units, deficiencies closedTested 85 SOX key controls across 3 business units and closed 6 deficiencies before year-end.
Engagement economicsBudget against actual hours, realization, jobs managedKept hours within 5% of budget on 12 of 14 jobs and lifted realization from 84% to 91%.

Here is how a full entry looks for one CPA. The manager role shows client size and team leadership, and the earlier role keeps 2 bullets.

CPA skills and software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the job ad, keeping only those a bullet backs up. An audit CPA and a tax CPA share little beyond GAAP, so build the list for your own practice area instead of covering both sides.

Hard skills for CPAs

  • US GAAP
  • GAAS and PCAOB auditing standards
  • Federal and state tax compliance
  • Tax research and planning
  • SEC reporting (10-K, 10-Q)
  • SOX internal controls testing
  • Financial statement preparation
  • Risk assessment and audit planning
  • IRS notice and examination representation
  • Technical accounting memos (ASC 606, ASC 842)

Soft skills partners and controllers value

  • Professional skepticism
  • Client communication
  • Coaching junior staff
  • Planning around busy season
  • Ethical judgment
  • Explaining complex rules plainly

Put your software inside Skills and use each name again in a bullet. O*NET lists Microsoft Excel, SAP software and Intuit QuickBooks among the in-demand tools for accountants and auditors, with Alteryx, Tableau and Yardi tagged hot technology. Add the practice tools the posting names, such as Caseware for audit workpapers or UltraTax CS and CCH Axcess for tax, spelled the way the firm spells them.

How to list your CPA license, CMA or CFF

List certifications on your resume under Certificates, with the CPA license on the first line. According to the BLS, CPAs are licensed by their state's Board of Accountancy, and the IRS adds that keeping an active license means meeting the board's ethical rules and completing continuing education. A firm can confirm your status in CPAverify, which NASBA describes as a free national database of licensed CPAs with 53 jurisdictions participating.

CPA license and the credentials beside it
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
CPA (Certified Public Accountant)Your state board of accountancyPass the Uniform CPA Examination (3 core sections plus 1 discipline section) and meet your state's education and experience rules. Pennsylvania, for example, accepts 150 credits plus 12 months (1,600 hours) of experience verified by a CPA, or a bachelor's without 150 credits plus 24 months (3,200 hours).
CMA (Certified Management Accountant)IMAActive IMA membership, a bachelor's degree or related professional certification, Parts 1 and 2 passed within 3 years, and 2 continuous years in management accounting or financial management.
CFF (Certified in Financial Forensics)AICPAA valid CPA certificate, AICPA membership in good standing, forensic accounting experience and a passing score on the CFF Exam.

The AICPA's exam pairs the 3 core sections, AUD, FAR and REG, with a choice of BAR, ISC or TCP, so a candidate's discipline section hints at their track until the license arrives. The IRS notes that CPAs have unlimited representation rights before it, covering audits, collection issues and appeals. A tax CPA who represents clients before the IRS should say so in a bullet.

How to write the CPA license line

Write the credential, the issuing board and the month and year: Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy, 06/2018. Employers look up the license number themselves, so add it only when a posting asks. Licensed in 2 states? Give each license its own line, and mark an inactive license as inactive rather than dropping it.

Sample Certificates section: license first, then a second credential

Certificates

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Pennsylvania State Board of Accountancy, 06/2018
  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), 2023

Accounting degree, M.Acc. and 150 credits on a CPA resume

The BLS names a bachelor's in accounting, or in a field such as business, as the usual education for accountants and auditors. Follow the standard rules for listing education on a resume: degree, school, city and graduation date, placed below Work Experience once you are licensed. A master's in accounting or taxation goes above the bachelor's, because it often explains how you reached your credit total.

Many candidates reach 150 credits through a combined program. Penn State, for example, offers an integrated B.S. in Accounting and M.Acc. in Accounting as one route to the 150 credits of Pennsylvania's main licensure path. If you built your credits from extra courses instead, add 150 semester credits completed under the degree rather than listing each class.

New CPAs and moving from public accounting to industry

Newly licensed? Put the license on the first line of Certificates and in your headline, and let your busy seasons carry the experience. Still a candidate with under 2 years of work? An entry-level resume layout moves Education and exam progress higher on the page. Either way, these items count as evidence:

  • Busy-season volume: returns prepared or audits staffed in your first 1 or 2 seasons.
  • Audit areas you owned: cash, receivables, inventory or payroll, with the number of clients.
  • Exam progress: each section passed with its month and year, until the license arrives.
  • Internships: the practice area, the length in weeks and what you tested or prepared.

Don't

Newly licensed CPA looking for an opportunity to grow with a reputable firm.

Do

CPA licensed in 2026 with 2 busy seasons in a regional firm's audit group, seeking an in-charge role. Tested revenue and inventory on 8 retail and distribution audits.

A new license still needs proof next to it: seasons worked, audit areas and a client count.

Moving from a firm to a company role, such as controller or reporting manager? Rewrite your firm bullets in an industry reader's terms: closes, filings, controls and budgets instead of engagements and realization. A financial controller posting cares that you audited 20 revenue cycles because it means you can run one. Give the reason for the move in 2 sentences of the letter you send with it, and use these finance cover letter examples to open with your strongest number.

CPA resume FAQ

Can I call myself a CPA on my resume while I am still passing exam sections?

No. The title belongs to people whose state board has issued the license. List each section you have passed with its month and year under Certificates, add your expected licensure year, and use a headline such as Audit Associate until the license comes through.

Should I put my CPA license number on my resume?

Not usually. Write the state board and the date issued; an employer can confirm your status in NASBA's CPAverify database. Add the number only when a posting or an application form asks for it.

Where does CPA go on a resume?

In 3 places: after your name or in your headline, as the first line of Certificates with the board and date, and in your summary with your licensing state. Write it the same way each time, CPA without periods.

Should I list CPE hours on a CPA resume?

Not as a running total. An active license already tells employers your CPE is current; Pennsylvania, for example, requires 80 hours every 2 years, with at least 20 each year and 4 in ethics. Name a single course only when it matches the job, such as lease accounting for a reporting role.

Should a tax CPA and an audit CPA have different resumes?

Yes. Tax readers look for return volume, entity types and IRS representation; audit readers look for engagements, client size, standards and team leadership. Keep 1 master file and cut a tax or audit version from it, changing the headline, summary, skills and bullet order.

How long should a CPA resume be?

1 page through about 10 years of experience. Managers, directors and partners with many engagements or several practice areas can run to 2 pages, as long as the license line, summary and current role sit on page 1.

How do I list CPA licenses from more than one state?

Give each license its own line under Certificates with the issuing board and the date, newest first, and mark any inactive one as inactive. In your summary, name the state that matches the job you are applying for.

Should I include salary expectations on a CPA resume?

No. Raise pay when a recruiter asks or the form has a field for it. As a benchmark, the BLS reports that the median annual wage for accountants and auditors, the occupation that includes CPAs, was $83,680 in May 2025. Offers vary with your state, practice area and level.
