A CFO keeps the numbers honest and helps decide where the company's money goes next. A CEO, board or investor reading your resume checks for both: closes and audits that ran clean, forecasts that held, capital you raised or freed up, and a finance team you built. A long finance career produces more wins than 2 pages can hold, and the controls work that kept a company out of trouble rarely sounds exciting. Choosing which results to keep, and putting a dollar figure on each, matters more than listing them all.
How to Write a CFO Resume - Key Takeaways
- Use reverse-chronological order on 1 or 2 pages, with your current CFO role and its bullets complete on page 1.
- Open every finance leadership role with its scope: company revenue, ownership, entities, team size and who you reported to.
- Write bullets in the numbers a board reads: days to close, audit results, forecast accuracy, working capital, capital raised or refinanced.
- Name your ERP and planning systems with your skills, and prove each one in a bullet about a migration, a close or a forecast.
- Put CPA on your headline only while the license is active, and list every credential under Certificates with issuer and date.
- Leave your age and pay history off the page, then run it through an ATS resume checker before a search firm loads it.
What CEOs and boards look for in a CFO resume
In the BLS career path, experienced financial managers may advance to become chief financial officers, the executives responsible for the accuracy of an organization's financial reporting. O*NET lists the CFO title under chief executives, whose highest-rated task is directing an organization's financial or budget activities, followed by work with board members and preparing budgets for approval. A CEO or audit committee chair reads your resume to see whether you have done that at a company of their size, ownership and complexity.
Lay the page out so scope and results are easy to find, under headings that resume-screening software parses without trouble:
- Name, headline (for example, Chief Financial Officer, CPA) and contact details with a LinkedIn URL
- A 2- to 3-sentence summary right under the headline, printed without a section title
- Work Experience, newest role first, each finance leadership role opening with its scope line
- Key Achievements, for 2 or 3 company-level results such as a refinancing, an IPO readiness project or a sale
- Skills, with your ERP, planning and reporting systems
- Certificates, with an active CPA license listed first
- Education, highest degree first
- Optional: Volunteer Experience in place of Key Achievements for a nonprofit board, Languages for cross-border roles
Best format and length for a CFO resume
Pick the reverse-chronological resume format, with your current role first and every earlier one showing its title, company, location and the MM/YYYY months you began and left. Many CFOs reach the seat through controller, director of FP&A or VP of finance roles, and date order shows that climb and how long you stayed in each step. A combination layout makes sense only when you move into the seat from investment banking, private equity or consulting, and even then your jobs stay listed by date under the skills.
- Best for most CFOsReverse-chronologicalYour jobs, newest first, with your results under each one.Best for: A steady work history in your field
- FunctionalSkills grouped up top, with a short work history below.Best for: Gaps or very little experience
- CombinationA skills section first, then your full work history.Best for: A career change with strong skills
A 2-page resume fits a CFO whose roles each need a scope line and 3 to 4 results; if yours fit on 1, keep 1. A first-time CFO with 1 company behind them can often stay on 1 page. Write full entries for roughly the last 15 years and fold older roles, such as early audit or analyst jobs, into 1 short line with the title, firm and years.
| Setting | What to use |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 or 2 pages: 2 when each finance leadership role needs its scope line and 3 to 4 results |
| Headline | Seat, credential and sector: Chief Financial Officer, CPA, Industrial Manufacturing |
| Scope line | Revenue, ownership, entities and team: $310M, PE-backed, 5 entities, 38 in finance |
| Dates | MM/YYYY on every role, with Present on the seat you hold now |
| Confidential figures | A revenue band or a percentage change when the owner keeps exact numbers private |
| Photo and privacy | None for most US and Canadian searches; leave off your date of birth, family status and SSN |
| File type | A PDF for a search firm or board, plus a Word copy when a firm wants to edit it |
Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Search consultants and directors will open your LinkedIn profile before a first call, so check that each title, company and date there matches the version you send.
CFO resume summary vs. objective
Write a resume summary if you already lead a finance function as CFO, VP of finance or controller with a seat in front of the board. Name your title and credential, the kind of company you serve, 1 result in dollars and the team or systems you run. An objective only suits a reader seeking a first CFO seat or moving in from banking or consulting, and it still needs a number. Write it after your bullets so it can borrow the best figure from them.
CFO resume summary formula
Title and credential with X years leading finance for company type. Your largest cash, capital or reporting result, with the company's size. Team size and the systems you run.
Example
Chief Financial Officer and CPA with 11 years leading finance for private equity-backed manufacturers. Freed $27M of working capital at a $310M components maker by cutting inventory days from 96 to 71. Leads a 38-person team on SAP S/4HANA.
Don't
Results-driven finance executive with a proven track record of driving profitability and creating shareholder value.
Do
CFO of a $72M SaaS company with 410 employees, backed by 2 venture firms. Took free cash flow from -$11M to +$4M in 2 years and led the $48M Series D.
Here a board learns the company size, who owns it and 2 results with a time frame.
How to write CFO work experience bullets with numbers
Give your current role 3 to 4 bullets and each older one 1 to 3. Let the first bullet carry the scope (revenue, entities, team, reporting line), then write results from your board pack: cash, close, audit, forecast and financing figures, each with a before and an after. Your next CEO already knows what a CFO does, so list achievements on your resume rather than the duties in your job description.
| Area | What to count | Example bullet |
|---|---|---|
| Close and reporting | Business days to close, entities, filings, restatements | Closed 9 entities in 5 business days and filed 8 quarterly reports with 0 restatements. |
| Audit and controls | Material weaknesses, audit adjustments, audit fees | Remediated 2 material weaknesses before year-end and cut the external audit fee by $180K. |
| Forecasting and FP&A | Forecast accuracy, budget size, cost centers | Built a driver-based forecast that stayed within 2% of actual EBITDA for 6 quarters. |
| Cash and working capital | DSO, DPO, inventory days, cash released | Brought DSO from 58 to 44 days, releasing $9.5M of cash in 1 year. |
| Capital and financing | Equity raised, debt refinanced, rates, covenants, runway | Raised a $60M Series C and a $25M venture debt line, giving the company 34 months of runway. |
| Team and systems | Headcount, hires, ERP and planning migrations | Moved finance from QuickBooks to NetSuite across 4 entities while growing the team from 7 to 19. |
Here is one CFO's history written this way. The current role opens with scope and reporting lines, every bullet carries a dollar figure or a count, and the controller role keeps 2 lines.
Work Experience
- Lead a 38-person finance, tax and treasury team for a $310M industrial components maker with 4 plants, reporting to the CEO and a private equity board.
- Freed $27M of working capital in 3 years by cutting inventory days from 96 to 71 and moving 140 suppliers to 60-day terms.
- Refinanced a $145M term loan and revolver in 2024, cutting annual interest cost by $3.2M.
- Shortened the monthly close from 12 to 6 business days after moving 5 entities onto SAP S/4HANA.
- Ran the close and audit for a $180M textile maker with 3 plants through 6 audits with no material weakness.
- Built the 13-week cash forecast the lenders reviewed each month, landing within 3% of actual cash.
Don't
Responsible for financial planning and analysis.
Do
Rebuilt the annual budget process for 14 cost centers, shortening it from 11 weeks to 6 and giving every line a named budget owner.
Don't
Oversaw the annual audit.
Do
Prepared the company for its first audit under PCAOB standards, which closed with 0 material weaknesses 5 months before the IPO filing.
Say which audit it was, how it ended and what it made possible.
CFO skills and finance systems for your resume
Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that match the job ad and that your bullets prove. At CFO level a skill names a finance capability, such as treasury or M&A due diligence, rather than a task like reconciliations, and the soft skills show through the teams and boards in your bullets.
Hard skills for CFOs
- Financial planning and analysis (FP&A)
- SEC and GAAP financial reporting
- Internal controls and SOX compliance
- Treasury and cash management
- Capital raising and debt financing
- Mergers, acquisitions and due diligence
- Working capital management
- Tax strategy
- Investor and lender relations
- Enterprise risk management
Soft skills CEOs and boards value in a CFO
- Plain-language explanations of numbers
- Independent judgment
- Building finance teams
- Partnering with operating leaders
- Composure in audits and negotiations
- Discretion with confidential information
O*NET's in-demand list for chief executives covers Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. For treasurers and controllers it adds SAP software and Intuit QuickBooks, and that occupation's list also names NetSuite ERP, Microsoft Dynamics and Oracle Hyperion Planning. A board takes office software for granted, so list the ERP, planning and consolidation systems you chose, moved to or run the close in, by the exact name the posting uses. Each one should show up in a bullet too, such as the migration you led or the forecast you built in it.
CPA, CFA and CHFP: certifications on a CFO resume
The BLS says professional certification is not required for financial managers but indicates competence, and that CPAs are licensed by their state's board of accountancy and must pass an exam. Put certifications on your resume under Certificates, naming the issuer and the month and year, with an active CPA license on the first line. A CFA charter suits CFOs who came up through investment work, and the CHFP suits hospital and health plan finance.
| Credential | Issued by | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| CPA (Certified Public Accountant) | Your state Board of Accountancy | Pass the CPA Exam and meet your state's education, experience and ethics rules; AICPA notes that each of the 55 US jurisdictions has its own board. |
| CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) | CFA Institute | Pass Levels I, II and III plus the Practical Skills Modules, log 4,000 hours over at least 36 months in investment decision-making work, and join CFA Institute with professional references. |
| CHFP (Certified Healthcare Financial Professional) | Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) | Complete 2 modules, the Business of Health Care course and its assessment and then the Operational Excellence Assessment, as an HFMA member. |
How to show public company reporting and SOX work
Under section 302 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the principal financial officer of a public company certifies each annual and quarterly report and is responsible for internal controls. If you have signed those certifications, say so in a bullet with the count of filings and the outcome, such as 12 quarters with no material weakness. If you supported them as a controller or VP, write what you owned, such as the disclosure checklist or the control testing, and leave the signing to the officer who did it.
Certificates
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA), South Carolina Board of Accountancy, 08/2010
- Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), CFA Institute, 09/2014
How to list an MBA and accounting degree on a CFO resume
The BLS says financial managers typically need at least a bachelor's in business, economics or a related field, and that top executives at large corporations may hold an MBA. When listing education on a resume at this level, give each degree with its school and city, then the month you graduated, highest degree first. Skip GPA, honors and coursework.
Education goes near the foot of a CFO resume, under Certificates. Move it higher only when the posting asks for an MBA or an accounting degree by name, and add an executive education program with its full name and the year you finished.

First-time CFO and startup CFO resumes
Many top executives advance within their own organizations, the BLS says, and a first CFO seat often comes after a VP of finance or financial controller role. Your resume has to show you have already carried CFO-level work while someone else held the title. Put this evidence into your summary and the first bullets of your current role:
- Board and lender contact: board meetings you presented at, lender calls you ran and covenant packages you signed off.
- A financing you led: the raise, refinancing or credit line, with its size and terms.
- Audit ownership: the audits you ran from planning to sign-off, with their results.
- Cover for the CFO: months you held the seat during a vacancy, written as its own acting or interim title.
Don't
Finance leader seeking my first CFO role where I can add value.
Do
Controller and VP of Finance with 11 years at a $240M food distributor, running 3 lender refinancings and the 2025 audit committee calendar. Targeting a first CFO seat at a family-owned company preparing for outside investment.
An objective at this level still names a scale, a deal record and the kind of company you want.
A startup CFO resume reads differently: the reader wants runway, rounds and the finance stack you built from nothing, so lead each role with funding stage and headcount. Coming from investment banking, private equity or a Big 4 firm, keep date order and open with the deals or audits closest to the seat. Make the case for the move in a short letter; the finance cover letter examples show how to open it with a number.
CFO resume FAQ
How long should a CFO resume be?
1 or 2 pages. Use 2 when each finance leadership role needs a scope line and 3 to 4 results; a first-time CFO who has worked at 1 or 2 companies can often fit on 1. Give the last 15 years full entries, fold older analyst or audit jobs into 1 short line, and keep your summary and current role on page 1.
Do you need a CPA to become a CFO?
No. The BLS says professional certification is not required for financial managers, though it indicates competence. If the posting asks for a CPA and you hold an active license, list it first under Certificates and add it to your headline line.
How do I list a fractional or interim CFO role on my resume?
As its own Work Experience entry with the title you held, such as Interim Chief Financial Officer or Fractional CFO, and real dates. Open with the mandate, such as preparing for a sale or fixing the close. If you served several clients at once, list them under 1 entry with a bullet for each.
How do I show private company numbers on a CFO resume?
Use bands and percentages, such as $250M to $500M in revenue and a 30% cut in close days, and leave out any figure your confidentiality agreement covers.
Where does audit committee or board work go on a CFO resume?
Your work with your own company's board belongs in the bullets of that role, such as the board packs you prepared or the audit committee meetings you presented at. A seat on another company's board is its own Work Experience entry, and a nonprofit finance committee goes under Volunteer Experience.
Should a CFO resume mention SOX or SEC reporting?
Yes, if the role involved it. Under Sarbanes-Oxley section 302, a public company's principal financial officer certifies each annual and quarterly report, so name the filings you signed or prepared and the control results. Private company CFOs can list SOX-style controls work done for lenders or an IPO.
How much does a CFO make?
There is no BLS wage figure for CFOs alone. The BLS groups CFOs with chief executives, whose median annual wage was $213,990 in May 2025, and puts financial managers, who may advance to the CFO seat, at $166,570, also in May 2025. Leave pay off your resume and discuss it with the search firm or CEO.
Next steps
Choose the example closest to your seat, industry and ownership, keep its layout, and swap every figure for your own close, cash, audit and financing results. Put it together in the resume builder, or open a resume template and fill it in, then send it with a short cover letter that leads with the result your next board will care about most.
