Engineering Student resume example

Your first engineering resume usually goes out while you are still in statics or thermodynamics, for a summer internship or a co-op term a few months away. Employers who hire engineering students know your work history is short. They check your discipline, your graduation date, the CAD or coding tools you have used on real work, and whether you have built something that had to work. A design team part, a lab test or a 10-week internship can show that, once each one carries its size and its result.

How to Write an Engineering Student Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Order your entries newest first and keep the page to 1 sheet until your first full-time engineering job.
  • Write the month you expect to graduate in your headline and on the degree, and lead with your strongest internship or co-op.
  • Open with a 2- to 3-line objective: the internship or co-op term you want and your strongest hands-on proof.
  • Give internship, lab and design-team bullets a number engineers track: parts modeled, drawings released, test hours, cycle time or hours saved.
  • List the FE exam under Certificates once it is scheduled or passed, and add EIT or EI only after your state board issues it.
  • Name software exactly, such as SolidWorks or MATLAB, then test the file in an ATS resume checker before you apply.

What employers look for in an engineering student resume

A manager filling an engineering internship or co-op is not hiring a finished engineer. They read your bullets for the size of what you built or tested and how it turned out. The BLS gives the usual entry point for mechanical engineers as a bachelor's in mechanical engineering or mechanical engineering technologies, and most employers prefer to hire students from an accredited program.

Every applicant in the stack is working toward a similar degree, so the evidence around it decides who gets the interview. Lay the page out in these sections, named the way resume-screening software expects:

  • Name, a headline with your discipline and graduation month, and contact details, plus a portfolio link if it shows CAD or test work
  • An objective of 2 to 3 lines under the headline, which prints without a heading of its own
  • Work Experience: internships, co-op terms, lab or research jobs, then part-time work
  • Education, with your expected graduation month and 1 line of coursework or senior design
  • Skills, with every CAD, coding and analysis tool named
  • Certificates, such as a scheduled FE exam or an OSHA course card
  • Optional: one of Key Achievements (design teams and competitions) or Volunteer Experience, plus Languages and Interests

Best format for an engineering student resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your latest internship or co-op first, each with its title, employer, city, and start and end months written MM/YYYY. Your program and graduation date decide which internship postings you qualify for, so they sit in the headline as well as under Education. A functional layout hides those dates, and the dates are what a recruiter planning a co-op term reads first.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for an engineering student resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep it to 1 page. A resume with 2 internships, a lab job and a design team still fits once older part-time jobs drop to 1 or 2 bullets and coursework shrinks to 1 line. Spend the space you save on the technical entries, since those are the ones an engineer on the hiring team reads closely.

Engineering Student resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page, with older part-time jobs cut to 1 or 2 bullets
HeadlineDiscipline plus status: Civil Engineering Student or Electrical Engineering Co-op
Section orderWork Experience, then Education with the expected graduation month; with no internship yet, Education can lead
DatesMM/YYYY on every job and term, and your expected graduation month on the degree
UnitsTolerances, loads and test hours with their units, such as ±0.005 in, 12 kN or 40 hours
Photo, age and ID numbersLeave the photo off for most US and Canadian employers, along with any birth year, marital details or Social Security number
File typeA PDF with selectable text, unless the career portal asks for a Word file

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Bring printed copies to a career fair and upload the same file to the company portal afterward, so the page a recruiter marked up matches the one the applicant system reads.

Engineering student resume objective vs. summary

Write a resume objective while you are in school: the role and term you want, your discipline and the best piece of evidence you have. Move to a summary once you have graduated and your work history carries the page. The test: while you are still enrolled and asking for an internship, a co-op or your first role, write an objective.

Engineering student resume objective formula

Discipline student at school, graduating MM/YYYY, seeking the internship, co-op or first role you want and when it starts. Your strongest hands-on result and its count. The tool or credential the posting names.

Example

Mechanical engineering student at Missouri S&T, graduating 05/2027, seeking an entry-level fluid systems design role from 06/2027. Released 17 production drawings in SolidWorks during a summer internship at a pump maker. FE exam scheduled for 03/2027.

Don't

Hardworking engineering student looking for an opportunity to apply classroom knowledge and grow as an engineer.

Do

Civil engineering junior seeking a summer 2027 internship with a transportation design firm. Drafted 9 intersection plan sheets in Civil 3D for a county traffic study and holds an OSHA 10-Hour card.

This version gives the term, the field, a count and a tool in 2 sentences.

How to write engineering internship, co-op and lab bullets with numbers

Give an internship or co-op the same entry a full-time job gets: title, employer, city, MM/YYYY dates and 3 to 4 bullets that open with a verb. Start from the basics of listing work experience on a resume, then add the number an engineer on that team would check: how many parts, how many test hours, how tight the tolerance, how much time or scrap you saved. A lab or research assistant job with set hours belongs here too.

Numbers that prove engineering student work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Design and CADParts modeled, drawings released, revisionsModeled 31 sheet metal parts in SolidWorks and cut drawing revisions per part from 4 to 2.
Testing and lab workTest hours, samples, cycles, data pointsTensile-tested 60 3D-printed coupons in 4 infill patterns and wrote the summary the lab used to set its print settings.
ManufacturingCycle time, scrap, first-pass yield, stationsRebalanced a 5-station assembly cell from a 94-second to a 78-second cycle after a time study.
Code and dataScripts, data sets, manual hours removedWrote a Python script that parsed 2 years of sensor logs and flagged 14 pumps for early bearing service.
Field and siteTests logged, inspections, quantities checkedLogged 22 concrete cylinder tests and joined 6 site inspections on a parking garage project.
Team buildsParts made, weight, budget, deadlinesMachined 14 aluminum drivetrain parts for the robotics team in 3 weeks, all within drawing tolerance.

Here is one student's entry with those numbers in place. The internship is newest and gets 3 bullets; the part-time job keeps 1 line that shows reliability and a skill that carries over.

Sample entry: mechanical engineering intern with a part-time job

Work Experience

Mechanical Engineering Intern05/2026 – 08/2026
Fernquill Pump Systems | St. Louis, MO
  • Modeled 23 housing and bracket parts in SolidWorks for a skid-mounted pump redesign and released 17 drawings through checker review.
  • Ran 46 hours of vibration tests on 3 prototype motor mounts and plotted the results in MATLAB, which led the team to choose the stiffer mount.
  • Built an Excel quoting sheet for replacement impellers that cut quote preparation from 2 days to 3 hours.
Sales Associate (Part-Time)09/2023 – 05/2026
Hasketon Hardware | Rolla, MO
  • Cut and threaded pipe for about 30 customers a week and trained 4 new hires on the cutting station.

Don't

Assisted engineers with various design projects.

Do

Updated 12 legacy AutoCAD drawings to the current title block and caught 3 dimension conflicts before they reached the machine shop.

The rewrite says what you touched, how many, and what your check prevented.

Don't

Responsible for data collection in the lab.

Do

Collected strain gauge data on 18 concrete beam specimens and cleaned the data set the graduate team used in its 2026 conference paper.

Engineering student skills and CAD software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that a class, a lab or an internship let you practice on real work, and leave out tools you have only installed. A method tells a reader more than a broad label, so write finite element analysis or GD&T rather than engineering design.

Hard skills for engineering students

  • 3D CAD modeling
  • Engineering drawings and GD&T
  • Finite element analysis (FEA)
  • MATLAB and Python scripting
  • Data acquisition and lab testing
  • Prototyping and 3D printing
  • Machining and shop safety
  • Circuit building and soldering
  • Technical writing and lab reports
  • Statistics and design of experiments

Soft skills engineering teams value in students

  • Working on a design team
  • Clear test documentation
  • Taking feedback in design reviews
  • Balancing classes and work hours
  • Asking questions early
  • Safety awareness on the shop floor

List your software with your skills, then name it again in the bullet where you used it. O*NET's 2026 profile for mechanical engineers marks Dassault Systemes SolidWorks, Python and Microsoft Excel as in-demand hot technology and lists MATLAB as a hot technology. Civil and electrical students should copy the posting's own tools instead, such as Civil 3D for site design or LTspice for circuit simulation.

FE exam, EIT and certificates on an engineering student resume

The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the one engineering credential most students can earn before they graduate. NCEES, which writes it, says it is designed for recent graduates and students who are close to finishing an undergraduate engineering degree; it has 110 questions in a 6-hour appointment and runs year-round on computers at Pearson test centers. Whatever you hold, list certifications on your resume under Certificates, naming the issuer and the month.

Certificates engineering students can earn
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
FE exam (Fundamentals of Engineering)NCEES, under your state engineering board's eligibility rulesA 110-question computer-based exam in a 6-hour appointment, the usual first step toward a PE license.
EIT or EI (Engineer in Training or Engineer Intern)Your state engineering boardAn FE pass plus the board's application; Illinois, for example, enrolls candidates as an Engineer Intern.
OSHA 10-Hour course cardOSHA Outreach Training ProgramA 10-hour class on common job hazards; students receive a course completion card, and OSHA states that the course is not a certification.
Six Sigma Yellow Belt (CSSYB)ASQNo experience or education requirement; a 90-question computer-based exam of 2 hours and 18 minutes.

How to list the FE exam before you graduate

Eligibility depends on your state board. On NCEES's state pages, Arizona lets students in the final year of an ABET-accredited program register, Minnesota sets the line at 32 semester credits from graduation, and Illinois approves final-year students to sit the exam. Once your date is booked, list the FE under Certificates with the month and the word scheduled; after a pass, add EIT or EI to your headline only when the board has issued it.

Sample Certificates section: FE exam scheduled

Certificates

  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, NCEES, scheduled 03/2027
  • OSHA 10-Hour course completion card, OSHA Outreach Training Program, 06/2026
  • Six Sigma Yellow Belt (CSSYB), ASQ, 12/2025

How to list an engineering degree in progress, GPA and coursework

Write the degree as your school names it, with your start month and Present, and the expected graduation month beneath. ABET accredits programs, not whole schools: 4,863 of them at 950 colleges and universities in 42 countries. Check that your own program is on its list before you write ABET-accredited anywhere on the page.

Then apply the standard rules for listing education on a resume. Add your GPA when it is 3.5 or higher or when the posting requests it, and 3 to 4 relevant courses only when they match the job, such as Heat Transfer for a thermal role. A capstone or senior design project gets 1 line under the degree, with your part in it and a number.

Sample education entry: degree in progress

Education

B.S. in Mechanical Engineering08/2023 – Present
Missouri University of Science and Technology | Rolla, MO

Graduating 05/2027. Coursework: Machine Design, Heat Transfer, Mechatronics. Senior design: flow loop lead on a 4-student team building a test stand for a small centrifugal pump.

Engineering student resumes with no internship yet, for co-ops or after a career change

Freshmen and sophomores without an internship can still fill a page from labs, design teams and jobs that used their hands or their math. Give each item the numbers a paid job would get, and use Key Achievements or Volunteer Experience in the right column, never both.

  • Design and competition teams: Formula SAE, ASCE's Concrete Canoe or Student Steel Bridge Competition, or a robotics team, with the subsystem you owned and how the team placed, under Key Achievements.
  • Lab or research assistant roles: the equipment you ran, the samples or data points, and the group you worked for, as a Work Experience entry.
  • Machine shop, trade and technician jobs: the machines, the tolerances and the safety record, written with the detail an internship gets.
  • Class projects: 1 line under Education, only when the project built or tested something and has a number.
  • Tutoring or STEM outreach: students or sessions a week, under Volunteer Experience.

Don't

Member of the Formula SAE team.

Do

Owned brake system design for the Formula SAE car, sizing calipers and rotors in SolidWorks; the car passed brake inspection on its first attempt at the 2026 competition.

A team line needs the part you owned and what happened when it was tested.

A co-op alternates terms of full-time work with terms of class, and the BLS says some 5-year or even 6-year cooperative plans combine classroom study with practical work. Give each rotation its own entry if you moved to a new group, or 1 entry with the full date range if you stayed on the same team.

Coming back to school after technician, military or trade work? Keep that history in newest-first order, because hands-on years are what most classmates lack; a career-change resume shows how to frame them. Say why you went back in your internship cover letter, in 2 or 3 sentences, and keep the resume on the work itself.

Engineering Student resume FAQ

Should an engineering student take the FE exam before graduating?

Yes, if your state board allows it. NCEES designs the FE for recent graduates and students close to finishing an engineering degree, and boards in Arizona, Illinois and Minnesota let final-year students sit it. Taking it while the coursework is fresh means your first full-time application can show a pass instead of a plan.

Can I write EIT after my name as an engineering student?

Only after your state board issues the certificate. Passing the FE is the exam step, and the EIT or EI title comes from the board once you apply and meet its rules. Until then, list the FE exam with its date under Certificates and keep your headline to your discipline and graduation month.

Where do class and team projects go on an engineering student resume?

In 1 of 3 places, with no separate section needed. A capstone or class project takes 1 line under Education, a competition team goes under Key Achievements, and a paid lab or research role is a Work Experience entry. Each one needs your own part and a number.

Should I put my GPA on an engineering student resume?

Yes, when it is 3.5 or higher or the posting requests it. If your major GPA is stronger than your overall GPA, you can write Major GPA with its value, as long as your transcript shows the same figure. When an application form asks for GPA, give it there either way.

How should I list a co-op with several rotations?

Use 1 employer entry with the full date range when you stayed on the same team, and write the number of rotations in the title, such as Mechanical Engineering Co-op (3 rotations). If each rotation moved you to a new group, give each its own entry with its dates and bullets.

What should a freshman engineering student put on a resume?

Your program, your graduation month, every job you have held and any engineering work from high school. A strong high school item, such as a FIRST Robotics season, can stay until college work replaces it, usually by sophomore year. Add the CAD or coding tools from your intro courses that you could use again tomorrow.

Should I list U.S. citizenship on an engineering internship resume?

Only when the posting requires it. Some defense, aerospace and government contract roles require U.S. citizenship, and a 1-line note under your contact details answers that before the recruiter has to ask. Otherwise leave citizenship and visa status for the application form.

How long should an engineering student resume be?

1 page. Cut part-time jobs to 1 or 2 bullets and coursework to 1 line, and a page still holds 2 internships and a design team.
