Engineering resume example

Civil, electrical or controls, every engineering hiring manager starts with the same question: what have you worked on, and how big was it? Next come your software, the license or certificate you hold, and results with numbers and units. The page also has to make sense to a recruiter without stripping out the detail an engineer on the team expects to see. Writing for both readers is the core skill of an engineering resume.

How to Write an Engineering Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Order roles newest first (reverse-chronological) on 1 page, and move to 2 only after 10+ years of project, plant or research work.
  • Put your discipline and credential in the headline under your name, such as Civil Engineer, PE or Controls Engineer, EI.
  • Give every bullet a figure with its unit: drawings released, test cycles, first-pass yield, kV, dollars a year or RFIs answered.
  • Name software as the product, such as Civil 3D, MATLAB or SAP, and prove each tool in a bullet.
  • List your PE license or EI certificate first under Certificates, with the state board and the month it was issued.
  • Test the file with an ATS resume checker before you apply, since engineering portals screen for discipline and software terms.

What hiring managers look for in an engineering resume

Whoever screens an engineering resume wants to see what you designed, built or improved, and at what size. O*NET's task lists show how much the fields share: civil engineers compute loads, flow rates and material stress factors to set design specifications, electrical engineers prepare specifications for materials and equipment, and industrial engineers plan the sequence of operations that builds a product. In any discipline, a strong bullet shows one of those tasks with its scale and its result.

The BLS profiles 16 engineering occupations, from aerospace to petroleum, and names a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level education for every one of them. The degree is the baseline; the discipline, the projects and the license status are what a reader compares. Build the page from these sections:

  • Name, a headline with your discipline and credential (for example, Controls Engineer, EI) and contact details
  • A 2 to 3 line summary or objective under the headline, printed without a heading of its own
  • Work Experience, current role first, with the discipline in every job title
  • Skills, with your CAD, analysis and programming tools named
  • Certificates, opening with a PE license or EI certificate
  • Education, with the degree written as your diploma shows it
  • Optional: Languages and Interests, plus one of Volunteer Experience and Key Achievements

Best format for an engineering resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: newest role first, each one listing title, employer, location and its start and end month in MM/YYYY form. Engineering careers climb through numbered levels (Engineer I, II, senior, lead, principal) or move from design into project management, and this order lets a reader follow that climb. Keep it after a change of discipline too, since your earlier roles still show how you test and decide.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for an engineering resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Engineers with under 10 years of work fit on 1 page. Past that, a senior engineer or consultant with many projects can use 2 pages, provided the license line, the current role and the main software all sit on page 1.

Engineering resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page under 10 years; 2 pages for long project, plant or research careers
HeadlineDiscipline plus credential: Civil Engineer, PE or Process Engineer, EI
DatesMM/YYYY on each role and degree, with Present on the job you hold now
FiguresEvery number with its unit and base: psi, kW, gpm, parts per million, dollars a year
Photo and personal dataNo photo for most US and Canadian employers, and no date of birth, family status or SSN
FileA text-based PDF, or a Word file only when the employer's portal asks for one

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. If you work on defense, aerospace or other export-controlled programs, describe the work by function and scale, such as a flight-control actuator for a military trainer, rather than by program names or part numbers your employer treats as controlled.

Engineering resume summary vs. objective

Use a resume summary once you hold a full-time engineering job: your discipline, the kind of employer or product, your scale and 1 measured result. Interns, new graduates and people moving into engineering write a resume objective instead, naming the role they want and their best proof, such as a co-op term or a senior design project. The test: if your strongest evidence comes from a paid engineering job, write a summary.

Engineering resume summary formula

Discipline engineer, credential, who designs, tests or improves what for type of employer. Scale: projects, budget or volume. 1 result with its unit or base.

Example

Civil engineer, EI, who designs stormwater and water main projects for Illinois cities and counties. Delivers 6 to 8 projects a year with construction budgets up to $3.6M. Brought 11 of 12 projects in 2025 in at or under their bid budget.

Don't

Hardworking engineer who loves solving complex problems and thrives in a team environment.

Do

Controls engineer, EI, with 5 years on packaging lines at a food plant, programming Allen-Bradley PLCs. Raised line uptime from 81% to 90% across 4 lines by rewriting the fault-recovery logic.

The rewrite names the discipline, the plant, the platform and a result with its base.

How to write engineering work experience bullets with numbers

Your current job takes 3 to 4 bullets; earlier jobs take up to 4, and the oldest can drop to 1 or 2. Open each with a verb, then the object and its size, then the result with a unit, so another engineer could check the math. Choose figures your team already reports, such as drawings released, test failures closed, scrap rate, schedule days or budget. When you write achievements on your resume, put the unit in every result, as the rows below do for 6 kinds of engineering work.

Numbers that prove engineering work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Design releaseDrawings, plan sheets, parts, engineering change ordersReleased 140 plan sheets for a 2-mile county road widening, approved at the 90% review with 6 comments.
Testing and validationTest hours, cycles, prototypes, failures closedRan 1,200 thermal cycles on 8 battery enclosure prototypes and closed 9 seal failures before tooling release.
Process and qualityFirst-pass yield, scrap, defects per million, CpkRaised first-pass yield on a stamping line from 92.5% to 97.8% by re-centering 3 die settings after a designed experiment.
Power and electricalkV, kW, load, outages, misoperationsSet protection for 5 distribution substations, 69 kV to 12.47 kV, with 0 misoperations in their first year.
Cost and scheduleDollars a year, budget, days ahead or behindLowered a pump station retrofit estimate from $2.1M to $1.7M by reusing 2 existing wet wells.
Field and constructionRFIs, submittals, change orders, inspectionsAnswered 210 contractor RFIs on a $48M treatment plant expansion with a 3-day median turnaround.

Below, one civil engineer's entry puts that method to work. The current job shows design, scale and a result a client would check; the first job keeps a single line.

Sample entry: civil engineer in water resources

Work Experience

Thistlebend Engineers | Peoria, IL
  • Design 6 to 8 municipal stormwater and water main projects a year, with construction budgets from $400K to $3.6M.
  • Modeled a 2,300-acre watershed in HEC-HMS and sized 14 detention basins that passed state permit review on the first submittal.
  • Laid out the replacement of 9.2 miles of cast iron water main in Civil 3D, phased so no block lost service for more than 8 hours.
Engineer I, Site Development06/2021 – 07/2023
Orlenvale Consulting | Bloomington, IL
  • Drew grading and drainage plans for 22 commercial sites and inspected 5 of them during construction.

Don't

Responsible for designing electrical systems.

Do

Designed lighting and power for a 3-story, 64,000 sq ft medical office building in Revit, issued for permit in 7 weeks.

The second version gives the building, its size, the tool and the deadline.

Don't

Worked on process improvement projects.

Do

Cut changeover time on 2 injection molding presses from 75 to 32 minutes with a SMED study, freeing 9 production hours a week.

Engineering skills and software by discipline

Choose 6 to 8 technical skills for your resume from the posting, and keep only the ones a bullet proves. A broad word such as CAD or programming tells a reader less than the method itself: finite element analysis, hydraulic modeling, PLC programming or design of experiments.

Hard skills for engineers

  • Engineering design and drafting
  • Finite element analysis (FEA)
  • GD&T and tolerance analysis
  • Hydraulic and hydrologic modeling
  • Circuit design and simulation
  • PLC programming
  • Design of experiments (DOE)
  • Root cause analysis
  • Technical specifications
  • Cost estimating and scheduling

Soft skills engineering managers value

  • Clear technical writing
  • Running design reviews
  • Explaining tradeoffs to non-engineers
  • Working with technicians and trades
  • Prioritizing against deadlines
  • Owning a mistake and its fix

Your software list depends on your discipline, so write each product's exact name. O*NET's 2026 lists show the split: it marks Civil 3D, Revit and Bentley MicroStation in-demand for civil engineers, MATLAB, Python and C++ for electrical engineers, and AutoCAD, SQL and SAP for industrial engineers. Microsoft Excel carries the same flag on all 3 lists. Put each tool in Skills, then repeat its name inside the bullet where you used it.

PE license, FE exam and engineering certifications on a resume

The BLS says licensure is not required for entry-level civil or agricultural engineers, but civil engineers typically must be licensed if they provide services directly to the public, and a Professional Engineer (PE) may oversee other engineers, approve design plans and sign off on projects. NCEES, which writes the exams for 68 engineering and surveying licensing boards, describes the usual path: a bachelor's from an EAC/ABET-accredited program, the FE exam, 4 years of progressive work experience in most states, then the PE exam. Under Certificates, list certifications on your resume with the license on top and an issuer and date on every line.

Engineering licenses and certifications on a resume
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
PE (Professional Engineer)Your state engineering board; exam by NCEESAn accredited degree, the FE, usually 4 years of experience and the PE exam, offered in disciplines from agricultural and biological engineering to structural.
EI or EIT (Engineer Intern, Engineer in Training)The state board, once you pass the NCEES FEA pass on the FE: 110 computer-based questions in a 6-hour appointment, written for recent graduates and students close to finishing an engineering degree.
CSSGB (Certified Six Sigma Green Belt)ASQA 110-question exam, taken after 3 years of paid, full-time work in areas the Green Belt body of knowledge covers.
CQE (Certified Quality Engineer)ASQ8 years of quality work, 3 of them in a decision-making role, with 4 years waived for a bachelor's degree; a 175-question computer-based exam.

How to write the license line before and after the PE

Put the credential your board has issued after your discipline in the headline: Civil Engineer, EI after the FE, and Civil Engineer, PE once licensed. Boards name the first certificate differently, since Connecticut registers an Engineer-In-Training while Illinois and Delaware enroll an Engineer Intern, so copy your own board's term. A PE exam you have not passed goes under Certificates with the month you are scheduled to sit it, never in the headline.

Sample Certificates section: EI with the PE exam scheduled

Certificates

  • Engineer Intern (EI), Illinois, Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, 07/2021
  • PE exam, Civil: Water Resources and Environmental, NCEES, scheduled 01/2027

How to list an engineering degree and ABET accreditation

ABET accredits 4,863 programs at 950 colleges and universities in 42 countries, and its stamp matters on a resume because licensing boards look for it: NCEES says boards require PE candidates on the usual path to hold a bachelor's from an EAC/ABET-accredited program. The BLS adds that employers may prefer graduates of accredited programs. Write the degree exactly as your diploma does, since a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology is a different program from a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Follow the standard rules for listing education on a resume: degree name, the school and its city, then the month you graduated. Recent graduates can add a senior design project or a research lab in 1 line under the degree, with a number. Show a GPA only while it helps: 3.5 or higher, and only until your first full-time engineering job has a year behind it. A master's goes above the bachelor's, with its specialization when a job ad requests it.

Sample education entry: civil engineering graduate

Education

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering05/2021
Bradley University | Peoria, IL

Senior design: a 3-cell box culvert replacement for a county road, built to the team's plans in 2022.

Entry-level, intern and career-change engineering resumes

Without a full-time engineering job yet, lead with your degree and your strongest hands-on proof. Co-op terms and internships get their own Work Experience entries, written as fully as a paid job. The entry-level engineering and engineering student examples lay out the page for graduates and for people still in school.

  • Co-op or internship: the team, the product or system and 2 to 3 bullets with numbers, such as drawings checked or tests run.
  • Senior design or capstone: 1 line under Education with the problem, your part in it and a measured result.
  • Solar car, concrete canoe or robotics teams: under Key Achievements, with what you built and how it placed.
  • Technician, lab or trade jobs: a full entry with the equipment you ran and what you measured.

Don't

Motivated engineering student seeking an internship to gain hands-on experience.

Do

Electrical engineering junior seeking a summer 2027 internship in power systems. Wired and tested the battery management board for a campus solar car that completed an 1,800-mile road race.

Even an objective needs evidence: a field, a date and something built.

Moving into engineering from a technician, drafter, military or lab science role, stay with newest-first order and lead with the credential that made the switch possible, such as an engineering degree or a passed FE. From earlier jobs, hold on to bullets that transfer: equipment you maintained, drawings you produced, data you analyzed. Our career-change resume examples arrange that kind of page. Explain the move itself in 2 or 3 sentences of your cover letter; see these engineer cover letter examples.

Engineering resume FAQ

Do I need a PE license to work as an engineer?

Not for most entry-level jobs. The BLS says licensure is not required for entry-level civil or agricultural engineers, though civil engineers typically must be licensed to offer services directly to the public. A PE matters most where someone has to approve plans and sign off on projects, as in civil, structural and consulting work.

What is the difference between EI and EIT on a resume?

None in meaning. Both name the certificate a state board grants after you pass the FE exam: Connecticut registers an Engineer-In-Training, while Illinois enrolls an Engineer Intern. Write the exact term your board prints on your certificate, with the state and the month.

How long should an engineering resume be?

1 page until you have about 10 years of engineering work. After that, 2 pages suit a senior or consulting engineer with many projects, as long as the license line, the current job and the main software stay on page 1.

Where do engineering projects go on a resume?

Inside the sections the resume already has. Senior design and course projects go under Education or Key Achievements, project work for an employer goes in that job's bullets, and personal or team builds go under Key Achievements. Give each one its size and a result.

Which software should I put on an engineering resume?

The tools the posting names that you have used on real work, written as the product: Civil 3D rather than CAD, MATLAB rather than programming. List each one in Skills, and use it by name in a project bullet too.

How do I list a co-op on an engineering resume?

As a full Work Experience entry with the employer, city, a title such as Engineering Co-op and the term dates. Give it 2 to 3 bullets with numbers. If you worked several terms at one employer, group them under 1 entry with the overall dates.

Can I change engineering disciplines on my resume?

Yes. Keep reverse-chronological order, put the target discipline in your headline, and open each older job with the work that transfers, such as an analysis method, a software package or test practice. Coursework or a certificate in the new field goes under Education or Certificates with its date.

Do employers check whether my engineering degree is ABET-accredited?

Licensing boards do. NCEES says boards require PE candidates on the usual path to hold a bachelor's from an EAC/ABET-accredited program, and the BLS says employers may prefer graduates of accredited programs. Write the exact degree name so a reader can confirm it.

What do architecture and engineering jobs pay?

Architecture and engineering occupations, a BLS group that also includes architects, drafters and technicians, had a median wage of $99,520 a year in May 2025, against $50,980 for all occupations. Pay varies by discipline, state and license; leave it off your resume and raise it at the offer stage.
