19 Civil Engineer Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Engineering firms and public agencies want to know what kind of projects you designed, how big they were, which software drew them and where you stand on the road to a PE license. Use these examples and the guide below to write each of those into your resume.

Civil Engineer resume example

Civil engineering covers everything from a culvert replacement to a new interchange, so a job title on its own tells an employer very little. A firm or public agency hiring you checks the type and size of your projects, your design software, your progress toward a PE license, and whether your plans held to budget and code. One project can run for years and fill a binder of plan sheets, and on a resume it has to shrink to a line or two carrying its acres, miles or dollars and your part in it.

How to Write a Civil Engineer Resume - Key Takeaways

  • List jobs newest first (reverse-chronological) on 1 page, adding a second only once 10+ years of projects no longer fit.
  • Open with 2 to 3 lines that name your specialty, your years, your main design software and your license status, such as EI or PE.
  • Give every bullet a civil number: acres drained, feet of pipe, lane miles, design storm, cubic yards, contract value or RFIs answered.
  • Name your software exactly as the posting does, such as Civil 3D, MicroStation or ArcGIS, in Skills and again inside a bullet.
  • Put PE after your name only once a state board issues the license; until then, list your EI and the PE exam date under Certificates.
  • Keep units and program names as plain text, then check how hiring software reads it with an ATS resume checker before you send it.

What hiring managers look for in a civil engineer resume

A principal at a consulting firm or a city engineer screens your resume for projects like theirs, built to the standards they answer to. The BLS lists analyzing plans and survey reports, preparing cost estimates for equipment, materials and labor, using design software to plan transportation and hydraulic systems, and submitting permit applications as core duties. O*NET adds computing load and grade requirements and water flow rates, and inspecting project sites for conformance to the design. Each bullet should show one of those tasks on a named type of project, with its size.

Build the page from these sections, under headings that hiring software can parse:

  • Name, headline with your license status (for example, Civil Engineer, PE, or Project Engineer, EI) and contact details
  • Summary: a 2- to 3-line opening paragraph that needs no heading of its own
  • Work Experience, current job first, with your projects inside each entry's bullets
  • Skills, with your design and modeling software among them
  • Certificates: license or EI first, then exams passed or scheduled
  • Education, with the full degree name
  • Optional: Languages, and 1 of Volunteer Experience and Key Achievements

Best format for a civil engineer resume

Choose the reverse-chronological resume format: your current role at the top, each one labeled with your title, the firm or agency, the city it sits in, and dates written MM/YYYY. Civil careers climb in steps employers recognize, from staff or design engineer to project engineer, project manager and senior or principal, and newest-first order puts the latest step where a reader starts. Co-ops and internships fit the same order as dated entries, which suits students too.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a civil engineer resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

A single page holds most civil careers through their first decade. After that, a senior engineer or project manager with a long run of designs, studies and construction jobs can use 2 pages, as long as page 1 holds the license line and the 2 latest roles.

Civil Engineer resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page for most; 2 once 10+ years of projects need the room
DatesMonth and year (MM/YYYY), ending in Present for the role you are in
Title lineTitle plus license status, such as Civil Engineer, PE, or Staff Engineer, EI
Project linesProject type, owner and size in the bullet, never only a contract or job number
UnitsFeet, miles, acres, cubic yards, gpm or MGD, written the way your plan sheets write them
Photo and privacyPhotos are rare on US and Canadian resumes; skip age, marital status and SSN
File typeA text-based PDF, or Word when an agency's application portal requires it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. City, county and state agencies often hire through online application systems that score text, so write your software, units and license as words and digits rather than logos or graphics.

Civil engineer resume summary vs. objective

If you have held any engineering job, internships and co-ops included, write a resume summary: your specialty, your years, your main software, your biggest project and your license status. Only someone with no engineering work at all needs one of the resume objective examples instead, backed by a capstone, a lab or survey crew work. Draft it last, after the bullets, and lift its strongest number from them.

Civil engineer resume summary formula

Title, license status, with X years in specialty, working in design software. Your largest design or construction result, with its size. Next license step and date.

Example

Civil engineer, EI, with 4 years in municipal stormwater and site design, working in Civil 3D and HEC-RAS. Designed drainage for a 46-acre subdivision and prepared bid documents for a $6.2M culvert-to-bridge replacement. PE Civil: Water Resources and Environmental scheduled for 04/2027.

Don't

Motivated civil engineer with strong technical and problem-solving skills, seeking to contribute to challenging infrastructure projects.

Do

Transportation engineer, EI, with 4 years designing county roads and intersections in MicroStation. Prepared plans for 9 resurfacing and signal projects worth $14M in total. Sitting for the PE Civil: Transportation exam in 2027.

A reader now knows the specialty, the software, a project count with its value and the next license step.

How to write civil engineer work experience bullets with numbers

Your current job gets 3 to 4 bullets, older jobs 2 to 4, each opening on a verb. Civil work comes with its numbers already on the plan sheets and in the bid tabs, so a strong bullet carries the project type, the size and what your design or oversight changed. Keep the facts of each role in the order employers expect when listing work experience on a resume: title, employer, city, dates, then bullets.

Numbers that prove civil engineering work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Stormwater and drainageAcres drained, pipe length, design storm, ponds or swalesSized 2,600 feet of storm pipe and 2 bioswales for a 12-acre school campus to the 10-year storm.
Roads and trafficLane miles, intersections, daily traffic, signalsRedesigned 5 intersections on a corridor carrying 18,000 vehicles a day, adding turn lanes and new signals.
Water and wastewaterMiles of main, flows in gpm or MGD, pressure, pump stationsModeled fire flow for 9 miles of distribution main and specified 2 booster pumps to hold 40 psi.
Bridges and structuresSpans, structures rated, loads, inspectionsLoad-rated 16 county bridges and flagged 3 for weight-limit posting.
Site developmentSites, acres, earthwork in cubic yards, permitsBalanced 85,000 cubic yards of earthwork on a 30-acre distribution center, avoiding any off-site haul.
Construction phaseSubmittals, RFIs, change orders, contract valueHeld change orders to 1.5% of a $12M sewer rehabilitation contract.

Below, a project engineer's last 2 roles follow those rules. The current role carries design and construction-phase numbers, and the earlier staff role keeps 2 bullets.

Civil engineering skills and software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting, each one backed by a bullet. A stormwater role reads for hydrology and drainage design, a transportation role for roadway geometry and traffic, and a construction-phase role for inspection, submittals and cost control, so take them from your side of the field.

Hard skills for civil engineers

  • Site grading and drainage design
  • Stormwater management
  • Hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
  • Roadway geometric design
  • Water and sewer utility design
  • Engineer's cost estimates
  • Technical specifications
  • Permit applications
  • Erosion and sediment control plans
  • Construction administration

Soft skills civil engineering managers value

  • Clear technical writing
  • Explaining designs to the public
  • Weighing cost against safety
  • Coordination with agencies and clients
  • Deadline control across plan submittals
  • Mentoring drafters and junior engineers

The BLS says civil engineers must explain their projects both orally and in writing, and must balance feasibility against cost and safety, so show those through a public meeting, a report or a value engineering change. For software, O*NET marks AutoCAD Civil 3D, Revit, MicroStation, AutoCAD and Excel as in demand for civil engineering jobs, and lists ArcGIS, Procore, Primavera and MATLAB among its hot technologies. Write each one the way the posting does, and if it names a modeling program such as HEC-RAS that you have used, add it and prove it in a bullet.

FE, EI and PE license on a civil engineer resume

The BLS says entry-level civil engineers need no license, while those who provide services directly to the public typically must be licensed, and licensure generally takes an accredited degree, a passed FE exam, several years of experience and a passed PE exam. Licenses come from state boards: NCEES counts 68 member licensing boards and notes that most states ask for 4 years of progressive experience. List certifications on your resume under Certificates, naming the issuer and date, so a reviewer looking for your license status finds it in one place.

Civil engineering credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
FE Civil (Fundamentals of Engineering)NCEESA 110-question, computer-based exam offered year-round, meant for recent graduates and students near the end of an EAC/ABET-accredited degree. Results are pass or fail.
Engineer Intern (EI), OregonOregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land SurveyingA passed NCEES fundamentals exam, such as the FE, and an EI enrollment form with its fee.
PE (Professional Engineer), CivilYour state engineering board; exam by NCEESUsually an EAC/ABET-accredited degree, the FE exam, 4 years of experience in most states, and the 80-question PE Civil exam in Construction, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation, or Water Resources and Environmental.
SE (Structural Engineer), OregonOregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land SurveyingAt least 2 years of structural engineering experience on 2 or more significant structures, on top of the board's other requirements.

How to list an EI and a PE exam in progress

Write your intern designation in your board's own words: Oregon's is Engineer Intern (EI), and other boards may use a different term. Add the FE Civil with the month you passed it, then the PE Civil module with its scheduled date. Once the board issues your license, put it first with the state, add PE to your headline, and drop the EI line.

Sample Certificates section: Oregon EI and a booked PE Civil exam

Certificates

  • Engineer Intern (EI), Oregon State Board of Examiners for Engineering and Land Surveying, 07/2022
  • NCEES FE Civil, passed 05/2022
  • NCEES PE Civil: Water Resources and Environmental, scheduled 04/2027

How to list a civil engineering degree and ABET accreditation

Civil engineers typically need a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field, the BLS says, and employers usually prefer graduates of accredited programs. NCEES adds that licensing boards expect an EAC/ABET-accredited degree on the way to a PE, so write the degree name in full, such as B.S. in Civil Engineering, so a reader can match it to an accredited program.

When listing education on a resume, give the degree, the school and where it is, plus your graduation month. A GPA of 3.5 or higher belongs there only in your first 2 to 3 years out, and a capstone earns 1 line if it used software the posting names. A master's degree goes above the bachelor's; in BLS terms, graduate study, with a PE and experience, can help you move into supervisory roles.

Sample education entry: civil engineering capstone

Education

B.S. in Civil Engineering06/2022
Oregon State University | Corvallis, OR

Capstone: stormwater retrofit design for a 9-acre campus parking area, modeled in Civil 3D.

Intern, entry-level and career-change civil engineer resumes

Students and new graduates lead with what they have built so far. The BLS points to co-op programs as a way students gain practical experience, so give each co-op or internship a dated Work Experience entry with the same kind of numbers a full-time job gets, and place Education first. An engineering student resume layout suits interns, and an entry-level resume layout suits your first year on the job.

  • Co-ops and internships: plan sheets drafted, field tests run, quantities taken off, under Work Experience.
  • Capstone or senior design: the site, its size and the software, under Education.
  • Concrete canoe or steel bridge team: your role and what the team placed, under Key Achievements.
  • Survey crew or materials testing jobs: sites staked or samples tested, with the dates, under Work Experience.
  • FE Civil status: passed or scheduled, with the month, under Certificates.

Don't

Recent civil engineering graduate looking for an opportunity to apply my skills and grow as an engineer.

Do

Civil engineering graduate with a 12-week internship in a county public works department, seeking a staff engineer role. Drafted 3 plan sets in Civil 3D and passed the FE Civil in 2026.

Even an objective needs a fact: an internship, a plan set count or an exam passed.

Moving in from teaching math or science, surveying, CAD drafting or construction? Keep newest-first order, put your engineering degree, such as an M.S. in Civil Engineering after a science B.S., and FE status near the top, and lead your current job with the tasks closest to design work, such as takeoffs, grade checks and field inspection, or for teachers, the physics and calculus you taught. A career-change resume is read for proof you can do the work, so give that experience numbers too. Save the reason for the switch for your cover letter; the engineer cover letter examples show how to keep it short.

Civil Engineer resume FAQ

Should I put PE after my name on my resume?

Only once a state board has issued your license. Then add PE to your headline and list the license first under Certificates with its state and date. Before that, write EI or your board's intern term and the date your PE Civil exam is scheduled.

Do I need a PE license to work as a civil engineer?

Not to start. The BLS says entry-level civil engineers need no license, but civil engineers who provide services directly to the public typically must be licensed. Most design firms and agencies expect you to work toward the PE, so show your FE and EI status from your first job.

How do I list the FE exam on my resume?

List it under Certificates as NCEES FE Civil with the month you passed. NCEES reports FE results only as pass or fail, so there is no score to add. Put your board's intern designation, such as Engineer Intern (EI) in Oregon, on the line above it.

How long should a civil engineer resume be?

One page covers most engineers through their first decade. Once your project list runs past 10 years and several specialties, a second page is fine, provided the license line and your 2 latest roles sit on page 1.

What software should a civil engineer put on a resume?

The design and modeling programs the posting names that you can use from your first week, such as Civil 3D, MicroStation, ArcGIS or HEC-RAS. Keep the list to about 4 to 6 programs and name each one again in a bullet that shows what you built with it.

Should I list projects separately from my jobs?

No. Put each project inside the job where you did it, as a bullet with its type, owner and size. A project list without employers and dates leaves the reader guessing who you worked for and how recent the design is.

How should a civil engineer list co-op rotations?

Give the co-op employer one Work Experience entry and list each rotation's dates in the title line or the first bullet, such as Civil Engineering Co-op, 01/2025 - 05/2025 and 01/2026 - 05/2026. Then write 2 to 3 bullets with the plan sets, tests or quantities you handled.

Should I include my salary expectations on a civil engineer resume?

No. Pay belongs in the application form or a later conversation with the hiring manager. For reference, civil engineers earned a median of $100,840 a year in May 2025, per BLS wage data; offers vary with your state, your specialty and whether you hold a PE.
