Dental Hygienist resume example

A hiring dentist reads a hygienist's resume with the schedule in mind: will you keep it full? They look for a current license, the kind of practice you have worked in, the preventive and periodontal care you provide and the software you chart in. Your practice already tracks how many patients you see and how many book their next visit, yet few hygienists put those numbers on their resume. They say far more than a list of cleanings.

How to Write a Dental Hygienist Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Choose a reverse-chronological layout on 1 page; a second page only makes sense after 10+ years or a move into teaching or public health.
  • Put RDH or your state's license title in your headline once your license is issued, and write the license itself under Certificates in your state board's words.
  • Open each job with your patients a day and the practice type, then add periodontal, preventive and recall numbers.
  • List local anesthesia, nitrous oxide or other state permits right after the license, with the issuing board and date.
  • Name your practice software exactly, such as Dentrix, Eaglesoft or Open Dental, in Skills, and back each one with a bullet.
  • Test the finished file with an ATS resume checker, so a portal that screens for license and software keywords reads it cleanly.

What hiring dentists look for in a dental hygienist resume

A dentist or office manager checks a hygienist's resume for a license valid in their state before anything else. The Occupational Outlook Handbook from the federal labor statistics agency (BLS) lists removing tartar, stains and plaque, applying sealants and fluorides, taking dental x-rays and teaching patients how to brush and floss as core duties. O*NET adds recording medical histories, probing gums for signs of disease and charting decay for the dentist's diagnosis. Each of those belongs in a bullet with a count attached.

Build the page from these parts, each under a heading that office hiring software recognizes:

  • Name, headline (for example, Dental Hygienist, RDH) and contact details
  • Summary: 2 to 3 lines under your name, unlabeled
  • Work Experience, current practice first, with the practice type in each entry
  • Certificates: the state license first, then permits and BLS
  • Skills, with your practice and imaging software
  • Education
  • Optional: Key Achievements, Volunteer Experience or Languages

Best format for a dental hygienist resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your current practice first, each entry with your title, the practice name, its city, and dates written as MM/YYYY. Hygiene careers grow by practice type and responsibility, from general recall work to periodontal maintenance, lead roles or teaching, and this order makes that path easy to follow. If you moved up from dental assistant, keep the same order and let the license date mark the change.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a dental hygienist resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep the resume to 1 page for most of a hygiene career. A second page fits a hygienist with 10+ years across several practice types, a lead or educator role, or public health programs to describe, as long as the license and the current job stay on page 1.

Dental Hygienist resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 only with 10+ years, teaching or public health work
HeadlineYour name, then RDH or your state's license title and any degree, such as BSDH
Practice typeNamed in each job's opening bullet: general, pediatric, periodontal, orthodontic
DatesMM/YYYY for every job, Present for the current one
PhotoSkip it, as most US and Canadian offices expect; no date of birth, Social Security number or marital status
FileA PDF titled with your name and job title, unless the job ad requests Word

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Many hygiene jobs are filled through dental group portals or staffing apps that read your file into their own fields, so plain headings and a single column of dates work better than a decorative layout.

Dental hygienist resume summary vs. objective

If you have held a hygiene license and worked under it, write a resume summary with your years, practice type, daily patient load and 1 result. If you are about to be licensed, write a resume objective instead, with your exam results, license status and the kind of practice you want. Draft it last, once your bullets give you a number worth repeating.

Dental hygienist resume summary formula

Dental hygienist with X years in practice type, license state and software. 1 periodontal, preventive or recall win, counted. Permit, degree or next credential.

Example

Dental hygienist with 7 years in general and periodontal care, licensed in Minnesota and charting in Dentrix. Filled 7 open hygiene hours a week by working the unscheduled recall list each morning. Studying for a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene.

Don't

Detail-oriented dental hygienist passionate about helping patients achieve healthy smiles.

Do

RDH with 4 years in a pediatric practice, seeing 12 children a day and placing sealants at every eligible recall. Charts in Open Dental and takes bitewings on digital sensors.

This version names the practice type, the daily load and the software an office would ask about.

How to write dental hygienist work experience bullets with numbers

Your current job gets 3 to 4 bullets; earlier jobs, 1 to 4, fewer the older they get. The first bullet sets the scale: patients a day, solo or assisted hygiene, and the size of the practice. The rest should carry results a practice already tracks in its software, which makes them easy to write as achievements on your resume instead of a list of procedures. If you lead a hygiene team, add how many hygienists you schedule or train.

Numbers that prove dental hygiene work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Patient loadPatients a day, operatories, solo or assisted scheduleSaw 9 patients a day on a solo schedule built around 60-minute adult recall visits.
Periodontal careSRP quadrants, perio maintenance patients, full-mouth chartingCompleted 12 quadrants of scaling and root planing a week for a 2-doctor practice.
Preventive careSealants, fluoride varnish, acceptance ratesRaised fluoride varnish acceptance among adults from 41% to 67% by adding it to each treatment plan.
RecallReappointment rate, open hours, overdue patientsKept reappointment above 88% by booking the next recall before patients left the chair.
RadiographsBitewings, full-mouth series, panoramics, retakesCut digital bitewing retakes from 1 in 10 to 1 in 25 after coaching 2 new assistants on sensor placement.
Community programsScreenings, sealants, schools or sites reachedScreened 410 students and placed 220 sealants over 5 school-based clinic days.

Here is how a hygienist with 7 years in practice might write her last 2 jobs. The patient load comes first, the results follow, and the older job is cut to its strongest line.

Don't

Performed cleanings, deep cleanings and periodontal charting.

Do

Clinical terms and a weekly count tell a periodontal office what you can take on from day 1.

Don't

Educated patients on proper oral hygiene.

Do

Coached orthodontic patients on floss threaders and water flossers; 18 of 25 tracked patients had less bleeding on probing at their next visit.

Dental hygienist skills and practice software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting, and keep only the ones a bullet already backs up. Prophylaxis, periodontal charting and radiographs fit almost every hygienist; local anesthesia, nitrous oxide monitoring or laser therapy belong only where your license allows them and you have done them.

Hard skills for dental hygienists

  • Adult and child prophylaxis
  • Scaling and root planing
  • Periodontal charting and probing
  • Digital radiographs
  • Intraoral imaging
  • Sealants and fluoride varnish
  • Ultrasonic scaling
  • Local anesthesia
  • Oral cancer screening
  • Infection control and sterilization

Soft skills dental offices value

  • Chairside manner with anxious patients
  • Clear oral hygiene coaching
  • Keeping a tight schedule on time
  • Teamwork with dentists and assistants
  • Treatment plan explanation
  • Attention to medical histories

List your practice software under Skills, then show each system at work in a bullet, such as a recall report you built in it. O*NET marks Henry Schein's Dentrix as both a hot and an in-demand technology for dental hygienists and also lists Eaglesoft and Open Dental. Name the imaging system too if the posting does, and include Microsoft Office only if you used it for something a hiring dentist cares about, such as hygiene production reports.

RDH license, board exams and permits on a dental hygienist resume

The license is the first line an office checks. The BLS states that every state requires dental hygienists to be licensed and that requirements vary by state; most ask for a degree from an accredited dental hygiene program and passing written and clinical exams. ADHA describes the usual route as the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination plus a regional or state clinical exam, after which you are a registered dental hygienist (RDH). List certifications on your resume after the license, each with its issuer and month.

Dental hygiene license and credentials, and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Dental hygiene license (RDH or your state's title)Your state board of dentistryAn accredited program plus written and clinical exams; Minnesota, for example, also requires a test on its dental laws.
National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE)Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (JCNDE)A 9-hour exam at a Pearson VUE center, booked once your program director confirms eligibility or you prove graduation; results in 3 to 4 weeks.
Clinical licensure examAn agency your state accepts, such as the ADEX Dental Hygiene Examination or the CRDTS examA hands-on clinical exam; each state board decides which agencies' results it accepts.
Local anesthesiaYour state board of dentistryADHA reports that all states permitted hygienists to give local anesthesia as of August 2025; training and supervision rules are set state by state.
Nitrous oxideYour state board of dentistryADHA counts 35 states that let hygienists administer nitrous oxide and 8 that permit monitoring.
Basic Life Support Provider (CPR)American Heart AssociationA hands-on course; CPR certification is a common job requirement, the Occupational Outlook Handbook says.

How to write the license line

Copy the license title your board prints, then the board's name and the month the license was issued. The license number stays off: an office can look you up on the board's site in a minute. Licensed in 2 states? Give each its own line. Once you are licensed, your NBDHE and clinical exam results no longer need a line of their own.

Sample Certificates section: state license and BLS

Certificates

  • Dental Hygienist License, Minnesota Board of Dentistry, 06/2019
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider, American Heart Association, renewed 01/2026

How to list a dental hygiene associate or bachelor's degree

In the BLS description, dental hygienists typically need an associate's degree in dental hygiene and may also earn a bachelor's, while master's programs are relatively uncommon. ADHA puts an associate program at 2 to 3 years and a bachelor's at 4. The program's accreditation matters for licensure: Minnesota's statute, for one, asks for a program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation with at least 2 academic years of dental hygiene education.

Follow the standard way of listing education on a resume: the degree exactly as your college names it (Associate of Science and Associate in Applied Science are different degrees), the college and its town, and the month you graduated. New graduates can add their clinic patient count and a GPA of 3.5 or above in 1 line. After a few years in practice, the degree line alone (degree, college, date) is enough; a bachelor's in progress goes above it with its expected date.

Sample education entry: new graduate

Education

Associate of Science in Dental Hygiene05/2019
Normandale Community College | Bloomington, MN

GPA 3.6. Student clinic: 58 patients treated, 11 of them with periodontal disease.

New grad and career-change dental hygienist resumes

As a new graduate, open with an objective that gives your degree date, your NBDHE and clinical exam results with their months, and where your license application stands. Offices hiring a first-year hygienist want to see that you can work on real patients at a steady pace, so put your clinic numbers where they are easy to find. The entry-level resume layout works if you have little paid work to show.

  • Student clinic: patients treated, periodontal cases and radiographs taken, in 1 line under your degree.
  • Community rotations: school sealant days, nursing homes or public health clinics, with the people screened.
  • Dental assisting or front desk jobs: a full Work Experience entry with the chairside or scheduling skills that carry over.
  • Health fairs and free clinics: under Volunteer Experience, with screenings or sealants counted.

Don't

Recent dental hygiene graduate seeking a position where I can use my skills and grow.

Do

Dental hygiene graduate (A.S., 05/2026) who passed the NBDHE in 03/2026 and the CRDTS clinical exam in 05/2026, license application filed 06/2026. Treated 64 patients in the college clinic and seeks a full-time role in a family practice.

Exam months and a clinic count turn a hopeful line into a hiring case.

If you started out as a dental assistant, those chairside years are an asset: keep them as a full entry in your first hygiene years, with bullets on radiographs, infection control and patient care, under your new hygiene license and degree. From further afield, the career-change resume layout shows how to lead with the new credential. Your cover letter can say why you switched in 2 or 3 sentences, and these healthcare cover letter examples show the structure.

Dental Hygienist resume FAQ

Should I put RDH after my name on my resume?

Yes, once your state has issued the license. Before that, write your degree after your name and give your exam results and license application date in the objective. If your state uses a different license title, use its wording on the Certificates line.

How do I list local anesthesia and nitrous oxide permits on a dental hygienist resume?

List each permit under Certificates right after your license, with the issuing board and the month. Write it in the board's exact words, and add local anesthesia or nitrous oxide to Skills only if a bullet shows you giving it in practice.

Should I include my NBDHE score on my resume?

No. Write that you passed the NBDHE and the month, and only until your license is issued. Licensing boards and employers check that you passed.

How long should a dental hygienist resume be?

1 page for almost every hygienist, new graduates included. Move to 2 pages only with 10+ years across several practice types or with teaching, research or public health work, and keep your license and current job on page 1.

Which dental software should I list on a hygienist resume?

The practice management system you charted in, named exactly: Dentrix, Eaglesoft or Open Dental are common. Add the imaging software if the posting names it, and show each one in a bullet, such as building a perio maintenance list or tracking recalls.

How do I list part-time or temp hygiene work at several offices?

Give a regular part-time job its own entry with its days a week. Group temp shifts under 1 entry with the agency or your own name as employer, the overall dates and a bullet on how many offices and systems you worked in.

How do I go from dental assistant to dental hygienist on my resume?

Put your hygiene license and degree at the top, change your headline to dental hygienist, and keep your assisting years as a full Work Experience entry in your first hygiene years. Trim those bullets to the skills a hygienist uses, such as radiographs, infection control and patient education.

Do you need a bachelor's degree to be a dental hygienist?

No. The BLS says dental hygienists typically need an associate's degree in dental hygiene. If you hold a bachelor's or are working toward one, list it above your associate degree with its date.

What is the average dental hygienist salary?

BLS figures put the median dental hygienist wage at $98,100 a year in May 2025. Pay varies with your state, the practice and whether you work full or part time; keep it off your resume and raise it when an offer is on the table.
