Dental Assistant resume example

Dentists hire assistants who keep appointments moving. They ask what kind of practice you come from, whether you hold the credential your state requires, and which practice software you already use. Because chairside work supports the dentist's, many bullets describe the procedure instead of your part in it. Your part is what a dentist is hiring: the patients you seat, the rooms you turn over and the x-rays you take.

How to Write a Dental Assistant Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Lay out your jobs newest first (reverse-chronological) on 1 page, with the practice type in each job title line.
  • Open your first bullet under each job with your daily load: dentists assisted, operatories and patients seated a day.
  • Back your other bullets with numbers a practice already tracks, such as x-ray retakes, room turnover, supply spend or no-shows.
  • List your state registration or license first under Certificates, then your DANB credentials and BLS, each with its issuer and date.
  • Name your practice software exactly, such as Dentrix, Eaglesoft or Open Dental, in your skills and in a bullet.
  • Test your resume in an ATS resume checker before you apply through a dental group's online portal.

What dentists and office managers look for in a dental assistant resume

The person reading your resume is usually the dentist you would assist or the office manager who runs the schedule. The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook counts preparing patients and the work area, sterilizing instruments, handing instruments to dentists, processing x-rays under a dentist's direction and keeping treatment records among a dental assistant's usual tasks. O*NET adds taking medical and dental histories and vital signs, ordering supplies and giving the post-op instructions the dentist prescribes. A strong resume shows those tasks with the size of the practice and the volume you handled.

Because each state sets its own rules for what an assistant may do, the reader also checks whether your credentials match their state before reading your bullets. Arrange your resume in these sections:

  • Your name, contact details and a headline carrying your credential (for example, Registered Dental Assistant, CDA)
  • A 2 to 3 line profile under the headline; it needs no heading of its own
  • Work Experience, current practice first, with the specialty in each job title
  • Certificates: your state registration or license first, then DANB credentials and BLS
  • Skills, with your practice and imaging software
  • Education
  • If room is left: Languages, plus Key Achievements, or else Volunteer Experience

Best format for a dental assistant resume

Pick the reverse-chronological resume format: your current practice first, then older jobs, each with the title, the practice and its location, and the months you started and left in MM/YYYY form. Dentists hiring an assistant want to see where you work now and what kind of dentistry you did there, and this order puts both at the top. Add the specialty to the title line, such as Dental Assistant, Oral Surgery, so a reader sees your procedures before your bullets.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a dental assistant resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

1 page is enough for most dental assistants, including those with 10 years in the chair. Move to 2 pages only if you have led a team of assistants, trained new hires across several offices or taught in a dental assisting program, and keep your credentials and current job on page 1.

Dental Assistant resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 only with lead, training or teaching roles
HeadlineYour title plus credentials: Registered Dental Assistant, CDA
Job title lineTitle plus specialty: Dental Assistant, Pediatric Dentistry
DatesMM/YYYY on every job and credential; your current chairside job runs to Present
TypefaceOne easy-to-read font, body text between 10 and 12 pt
Photo and other detailsA photo is rarely added in the US and Canada; leave out your age, marital status and SSN as well
File typeA PDF, or a Word file when the practice's application form asks for it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Larger dental groups take applications through an online portal that reads your file into its own fields, so plain section headings help more than a decorative layout.

Dental assistant resume summary vs. objective

Use one test: have you worked chairside for pay? If yes, write a resume summary with your credential, your years, the kind of dentistry and 1 result. If you are an extern, a new graduate or changing careers, write a resume objective that names the role you want, your training and the next exam on your calendar.

Dental assistant resume summary formula

Credential dental assistant with X years in type of dentistry, working in practice software. Your daily load and 1 result an office tracks. DANB credential or the exam you are taking next.

Example

Registered dental assistant with 7 years in general and pediatric dentistry, working in Dentrix. Supports 2 dentists across 4 operatories and keeps x-ray retakes near 3%. DANB Certified Dental Assistant since 2023.

Don't

Hardworking dental assistant with excellent chairside manner and a passion for creating healthy smiles.

Do

Dental assistant with 3 years in a 5-chair family practice, seating about 14 patients daily and charting in Eaglesoft. Passed the DANB RHS; taking the DANB GC exam in 01/2027.

Now a dentist can see the practice size, the daily load, the software and the next credential.

How to write dental assistant work experience bullets with numbers

Write 3 to 4 bullets for the practice you work at now, and 1 to 3 for each earlier one. Make the first bullet your load: how many dentists you assist, in how many operatories, and roughly how many patients you see daily. Then add results the office already measures, from x-ray retakes to supply costs, which turns routine duties into achievements on your resume. If you have no exact figure, a fair estimate with "about" is fine.

Numbers that prove dental assisting work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Chairside volumeDentists, chairs, daily patients, procedure mixAssisted 3 dentists in a 6-chair practice, seating about 20 patients daily for restorative and crown work.
RadiographyImages a day, retake rate, panoramic or CBCT scansCaptured about 25 digital x-rays a day and held retakes under 4% across a full year.
Infection controlSterilization cycles, instrument turnaround, audits passedShortened instrument cassette turnaround from 40 to 25 minutes by reorganizing the sterilization area.
SuppliesMonthly spend, emergency orders, suppliersCombined orders from 3 suppliers and cut emergency orders from 6 a quarter to 1.
Patient carePost-op calls, instructions given, anxious patientsMade next-day check-in calls to about 30 extraction patients a month and flagged concerns to the surgeon.
Front desk supportConfirmations, no-shows, insurance formsConfirmed next-day schedules for 2 doctors and helped bring no-shows from 11% to 6%.

In the entry below, the daily load leads, every bullet has a figure with its base, and the older job takes a single line.

Dental assistant skills and practice software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that the posting names, and drop any your bullets cannot back up. Chairside assisting, sterilization and x-rays belong on nearly every dental assistant resume; implant, endodontic or orthodontic skills only if you did that work.

Hard skills for dental assistants

  • Four-handed chairside assisting
  • Digital radiography
  • Instrument sterilization
  • Infection control
  • Operatory setup and turnover
  • Alginate impressions
  • Intraoral scanning
  • Vital signs and medical histories
  • Post-op instructions
  • Supply ordering and inventory

Soft skills dentists value

  • Calming nervous patients
  • Anticipating the dentist's next step
  • Steady hands and attention to detail
  • Clear instructions for patients and parents
  • Teamwork with hygienists and the front desk
  • Keeping a tight schedule on time

List your practice management software among your skills, then prove it once more inside a work bullet, for example charting treatment or posting x-rays. O*NET marks Henry Schein Dentrix as both a hot technology and an in-demand one for dental assistants, and it also lists Patterson Eaglesoft and Open Dental. Microsoft Excel appears there too, which is worth adding if you track inventory or schedules in it. For imaging software and intraoral scanners, copy the brand name the posting uses.

State registration, x-ray certification and the DANB CDA on a resume

Per the BLS, each state regulates the scope of practice for dental assistants, and some states set specific requirements for taking x-rays. DANB describes the credentials those rules produce: a license or registration recorded by the state, permits for single duties, and national certifications. In Minnesota, assistants who perform expanded functions must be licensed as LDAs; in Tennessee, those who apply whitening must register as RDAs. List certifications on your resume with the state credential first, then the national ones.

Common dental assistant credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Certified Dental Assistant (CDA)Dental Assisting National Board (DANB)Passing the RHS, ICE and GC exams within 5 years, or the combined CDA exam in one sitting.
General Chairside Assisting (GC)Dental Assisting National Board (DANB)Graduation from a CODA-accredited dental assisting or dental hygiene program, or high school graduation (or the equivalent) and 3,500 hours of approved work, plus a current hands-on CPR, BLS or ACLS card.
Radiation Health and Safety (RHS)Dental Assisting National Board (DANB)A 75-question, 60-minute exam that DANB says is recognized or required in many states.
Infection Control (ICE)Dental Assisting National Board (DANB)The infection control component of the CDA.
Registered Dental Assistant (RDA), CaliforniaDental Board of CaliforniaA board-approved RDA program, 15 months and 1,280 hours of work, or an active DANB CDA, among other pathways. Most pathways add courses in radiation safety, coronal polishing, sealants, infection control and the Dental Practice Act, plus BLS, and every applicant takes the combined written and law and ethics exam.

How to list DANB exams before you earn the CDA

Write CDA in your headline only once DANB has awarded it. Until then, list each component you have passed as its own line with the month, and put the next exam last with the word scheduled and its date. A passed RHS exam is worth listing on its own, since it may already meet your state's x-ray requirement.

Sample Certificates section: state registration, CDA and BLS

Certificates

  • Registered Dental Assistant (RDA), Dental Board of California, 03/2022
  • Certified Dental Assistant (CDA), Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), 08/2023
  • BLS Provider (Basic Life Support), American Heart Association (AHA), 02/2026

How to list a dental assisting program, certificate or on-the-job training

The BLS says there are several paths into dental assisting: some states require graduation from an accredited program and an exam, while other assistants learn through on-the-job training. DANB's chairside exam reflects both, with one route for graduates of CODA-accredited programs and one for high school graduates with 3,500 hours of approved work. California's RDA can also be earned through 15 months and 1,280 hours of work experience.

The standard order for listing education on a resume works here: program name, college, location, then the month you finished. Write the certificate exactly as the school names it, and add 1 line on your clinical internship if you finished in the last 2 years. If you trained on the job, list your high school diploma here and let your Work Experience and Certificates carry the training.

Sample education entry: recent dental assisting certificate

Education

Certificate of Achievement, Dental Assisting Clinician05/2026
Fresno City College | Fresno, CA

Coursework in infection control, dental radiology and medical emergencies. Clinical internship in 2 general practices.

Extern, entry-level and career-change dental assistant resumes

If you are still in a program or just finished, your externship is your strongest evidence, so give it a full entry with the practice type, your hours and the procedures you assisted. DANB lets students in CODA-accredited programs apply for the chairside exam before they graduate, through a form the program director signs for those finishing within 90 days, so an exam on your calendar can go on your resume too. The entry-level dental assistant resume examples show how it fits on 1 page.

  • Externship or clinical internship: the practice type, your total hours and the procedures you set up or assisted.
  • Front desk or sterilization tech jobs at a dental office: its own Work Experience entry, with patients checked in or rooms turned over.
  • Customer service, retail or food service: 1 to 2 bullets on volume, cash handling or calm with upset customers.
  • Health fairs, school screenings or free clinics: under Volunteer Experience, with the number of people you helped.

Don't

Motivated individual seeking a dental assistant position where I can gain experience.

Do

Dental assisting graduate with 160 externship hours in a 6-chair general practice, seeking a chairside role. BLS-certified and sitting for the DANB RHS exam in 12/2026.

Even without paid experience, give hours, a setting and a date.

If you are changing careers, keep the reverse-chronological order and put your new certificate or RHS in the headline. From earlier jobs, hold on to bullets that carry over to a dental office: scheduling, inventory, payments, patient or customer contact, and following written procedures. The career-change resume examples show that layout, and a brief cover letter can explain your move; these dental assistant cover letter examples show how to do it in a few lines.

Dental Assistant resume FAQ

Do you need a certification to work as a dental assistant?

Not in every state. The BLS says each state regulates what dental assistants may do, and some require an accredited program and an exam. Many states also set rules for taking x-rays, so check your state dental board before you apply and list any credential it requires first under Certificates.

What is the difference between a CDA and an RDA?

A CDA is a national certification from DANB, earned by passing the RHS, ICE and GC exams. An RDA is a state registration, such as the one the Dental Board of California issues. California accepts an active CDA as one pathway to its RDA, but you still take the state's written and law and ethics exam.

Can I write CDA on my resume before I pass all 3 exams?

No. Write CDA only once DANB awards it. Until then, list each exam you have passed, such as Radiation Health and Safety (RHS), passed 06/2026, and add the next one as scheduled with its date.

Do I need x-ray certification on my dental assistant resume?

Yes, if your state requires one and you hold it. Per the BLS, states can set their own radiography requirements, and DANB says its RHS exam is recognized or required in many states. Put the credential under Certificates and prove it in a bullet about the x-rays you take.

Can I become a dental assistant without going to school?

In some states, yes. The BLS lists on-the-job training as one path, and DANB's chairside exam accepts high school graduates who have 3,500 hours of approved work. On your resume, let your work entries and credentials carry that training.

Should I list my dental assisting externship as work experience?

Yes, if it is your main chairside experience. Give it a full entry with the practice, its city and dates, and label the title Dental Assistant Extern. Once you have a paid dental job, shorten the externship to 1 line under Education.

Which dental software should I put on my resume?

Put the practice management system you charted in, by its exact name: Dentrix, Eaglesoft, Open Dental or another one the office used. O*NET lists Dentrix as an in-demand technology for this job. Add your imaging software and scanner by brand only when you have used them.

How long should a dental assistant resume be?

1 page for nearly every dental assistant. Use 2 only if you have supervised other assistants, trained staff across several offices or taught in a dental assisting program, and keep your credentials on page 1.

What is the average dental assistant salary?

Median pay for dental assistants was $48,070 a year in May 2025, BLS data show. What you earn depends on your state, your credentials and the specialty. Keep pay off your resume and raise it once the office makes an offer.
