Surgical Tech resume example

A surgical tech keeps the sterile field intact and has the right instrument ready before the surgeon reaches for it. Your certification comes first in an OR manager's read, then the services you have scrubbed for, your daily case load and whether you can take call. Specialty is what sorts candidates: 3 years of outpatient orthopedics and 3 years at a trauma center prepare you for very different schedules. So every job on your resume should name its service lines and give a case count.

How to Write a Surgical Tech Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Order your jobs newest first and keep to 1 page; a second page only fits once you have 10+ years or a lead, travel or first assistant record to show.
  • Name the service line in each job title or its first bullet, and open that bullet with your cases a day and the room count.
  • Give bullets numbers an OR manager tracks: turnover minutes, preference cards updated, tray errors, students precepted and call shifts.
  • List a state registration first under Certificates, then your CST or TS-C with its issuer and date, then BLS.
  • Write CST after your name only once NBSTSA confirms your pass; before that, give the exam date in your objective.
  • Test your resume with an ATS resume checker, since hospital portals screen for CST, BLS and specialty keywords.

What OR managers look for in a surgical tech resume

The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists preparing operating rooms, sterilizing equipment, passing instruments and sterile supplies, counting instruments so nothing is retained in a patient, and keeping a sterile environment as the core duties. O*NET adds positioning and draping patients and preparing tissue specimens for the lab. An OR manager checks your resume for proof of those tasks in a service like theirs, at a volume like theirs.

The BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, updated in 2026, puts 71% of surgical technologists in hospitals, so most applications pass through a hospital portal first. Build the resume from these sections:

  • Name, headline (for example, Surgical Technologist, CST) and contact details
  • Opening lines: a summary or objective of 2 to 3 lines, which prints with no heading of its own
  • Work Experience, newest job first, with the service line in the job title or first bullet
  • Certificates: a state registration first, then CST or TS-C, then BLS
  • Skills, with the OR and charting systems you know
  • Education: your surgical technology certificate or associate degree
  • If space allows: Languages, and Volunteer Experience or Key Achievements (one, not both)

Best format for a surgical tech resume

Pick the reverse-chronological resume format: your current job on top, each with the job title and service line, the facility, its city, and start and end months written MM/YYYY. Surgical tech careers grow by service, from general cases to orthopedics, cardiovascular or neuro, and newest-first order lets a manager follow that growth job by job. Rotations to other services belong in a bullet under the job, not as separate entries.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a surgical tech resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

One page holds most surgical tech resumes, including those of new graduates and techs with 5 to 8 years in 2 or 3 hospitals. Move to 2 pages only for a long travel record, a lead or first assistant role, or 10+ years across several specialties, and keep your credentials and current job on page 1.

Surgical Tech resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 only with 10+ years, travel contracts or a lead role
HeadlineYour title plus credential: Surgical Technologist, CST
Job title lineTitle plus service: Surgical Technologist, Cardiovascular OR
DatesMM/YYYY for every job and credential; Present for the current role
Personal detailsUsually no photo in the US and Canada; never your date of birth, marital status or SSN
File typePDF, or Word when a hospital's application system requests it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. A surgical tech resume gains more from clear service names and credential dates than from design, because the first reader is often a parser filling a hospital's applicant record.

Surgical tech resume summary vs. objective

Use one test: have you been paid to scrub cases? If yes, write a resume summary with your credential, years, services and 1 number. If you are a student, a new graduate or moving over from sterile processing or the military, write a resume objective with the service you want, your CST status and your clinical case count.

Surgical tech resume summary formula

Credential surgical technologist with X years in services or setting. Case volume or 1 numbered result. Next credential or specialty you are working toward.

Example

CST surgical technologist with 5 years in general, colorectal and robotic surgery at a hospital and an outpatient surgery center. Scrubs about 1,100 cases a year and trained 6 coworkers on robotic draping. Enrolled in a surgical first assistant program.

Don't

Detail-oriented surgical technologist passionate about patient safety and teamwork in the operating room.

Do

CST with 3 years on an outpatient ENT and hand surgery service, setting up 6 to 8 cases a day. Ready to add trauma and spine call at a hospital.

The rewrite names the credential, the service, the volume and the move the candidate wants.

How to write surgical tech work experience bullets with case counts

Your current job takes 3 to 4 bullets; earlier jobs take 1 to 4, fewer the further back they go. Open the first one with your cases a day and the size of the department, since every other number is read against them. Then add results the OR already tracks: turnover times, preference card accuracy, tray errors, students precepted. The basics of listing work experience on a resume apply, with surgical numbers like these:

Numbers that prove surgical tech work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Case volumeCases a day or a year, services coveredScrubbed about 1,300 cases in 2025 across urology, gynecology and general surgery.
TurnoverMinutes between cases, rooms coveredCut average room turnover on a 6-room orthopedic service from 32 to 24 minutes by staging the next case cart during closing.
Preference cards and suppliesCards updated, supplies opened but unusedUpdated 40 surgeon preference cards with the circulators, cutting opened-but-unused supplies by about $18,000 a year.
Patient safetyCounts, specimens, sterile field breaksLabeled and handed off specimens on 2,300 cases over 18 months with 0 labeling errors.
TrainingStudents and new techs preceptedPrecepted 3 surgical technology students through their final clinical rotation.

Here is one tech's entry with the volume first and results after it. The older job at a surgery center keeps a single line.

Sample entry: surgical technologist in general and robotic surgery

Work Experience

Surgical Technologist, General and Robotic Surgery04/2023 – Present
Ashvarre Medical Center | Spokane, WA
  • Scrub 5 to 7 general, colorectal and robotic cases a day in a 14-room OR, and take trauma call 1 weekend in 4.
  • Trained 6 coworkers to drape and dock the da Vinci Xi before the service grew to 3 robotic days a week.
  • Rebuilt 9 preference cards with sterile processing, cutting tray errors from 11 to 4 a quarter.
Surgical Technologist07/2021 – 03/2023
Kestrane Surgery Center | Spokane Valley, WA
  • Set up and scrubbed 8 to 10 outpatient ENT and hand cases a day in a 4-room surgery center.

Don't

Passed instruments to surgeons during procedures.

Do

Scrubbed 4 to 6 laparoscopic and open general surgery cases a day, reading each surgeon's preference card to have the next instrument ready.

Case type, daily load and method turn a duty into evidence.

Don't

Responsible for sponge and instrument counts.

Do

Ran opening and closing counts with the circulator on every case for 2 years and caught 1 missing needle before closure.

Surgical tech skills and software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume, taking them from the posting and keeping only those your OR bullets back up. Sterile technique and counts fit every surgical tech resume; robotic docking, cell saver setup or microscope draping only when you have done them on real cases.

Hard skills for surgical techs

  • Sterile technique
  • Back table and Mayo stand setup
  • Surgical counts
  • Instrument identification
  • Patient positioning and draping
  • Specimen handling
  • Robotic draping and docking
  • Laparoscopic equipment setup
  • Suture and needle loading
  • Instrument decontamination and sterilization

Soft skills OR teams value

  • Anticipating the surgeon's next step
  • Calm during emergencies
  • Closed-loop communication
  • Stamina on long cases
  • Attention to detail
  • Teamwork with circulators and anesthesia

O*NET flags MEDITECH software and Microsoft Office as hot technologies for surgical technologists, and lists patient tracking, supply documentation and surgery workflow communication software among the tools of the job. Write the system your hospital used by its exact name, such as Epic's OpTime module for OR documentation, and name robotic platforms such as the da Vinci Xi the same way.

CST, TS-C and state registration: how to list surgical tech credentials

The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that certification usually means finishing an accredited program or military training and passing an exam, that some states regulate the work, and that many jobs require CPR or basic life support certification, or both. Washington, for example, registers surgical technologists through its Department of Health. Put your certifications on your resume under Certificates, with the state credential first and each line carrying its issuer and date.

Surgical tech credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
CST (Certified Surgical Technologist)National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)Graduation from a CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited surgical technology program, or a military program, and the CST exam. Renewal is by AST-approved continuing education within each cycle, or by retaking the exam.
TS-C (Tech in Surgery, Certified)National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)Graduation from an NCCT-authorized program in the last 5 years, 3 years of full-time surgical technology work in the last 5 years, or military training, then the exam.
CSFA (Certified Surgical First Assistant)NBSTSAGraduation from a CAAHEP-accredited surgical first assistant program and the CSFA exam.
State registration or licenseYour state, such as the Washington State Department of HealthRules differ by state; Washington registers surgical technologists under Chapter 18.215 RCW.
BLS (Basic Life Support)American Heart AssociationA provider course; many surgical tech jobs require CPR or BLS certification, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

How to write the CST before you pass the exam

Write the exam and its month under Certificates as CST exam scheduled 11/2026, and repeat that status in your objective. Add CST to your headline only after NBSTSA confirms the pass. If you hold a state registration, list it with the state and the month it was issued, and leave the registration number off: employers check it with the state.

Sample Certificates section: state registration, CST and BLS

Certificates

  • Surgical Technologist Registration, Washington, Washington State Department of Health, 07/2021
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), NBSTSA, 06/2021
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), American Heart Association, 03/2026

How to list a surgical technology certificate or associate degree

The BLS says surgical technologists typically need a certificate or associate's degree from an accredited program, and NBSTSA only admits graduates of CAAHEP- or ABHES-accredited programs, or of a military program, to the CST exam. Write the award exactly as the school names it, such as Associate in Applied Science, Surgical Technology, so an OR manager can see you came through a program that leads to the CST.

Follow the standard rules for listing education on a resume: the award, the school, its city and the month you graduated. In your first 2 years, add 1 line with your clinical sites and case count; after that, keep the entry to the award, school and date.

Sample education entry: associate degree with clinical cases

Education

Associate in Applied Science, Surgical Technology06/2021
Spokane Community College | Spokane, WA

Clinical rotations at 2 hospitals: 140 cases, 95 in the first scrub role.

Student, new grad and career-change surgical tech resumes

Without paid OR experience, your clinical rotations are your work history. Name each site, the services you rotated through and your case count, and split cases between the first and second scrub roles if your program logged them that way. Any patient-facing or sterile processing job counts too, with its numbers.

  • Clinical rotations: sites, services and cases logged, under Education or as their own entry.
  • Sterile processing work: trays assembled a shift and the instrument sets you know, as a Work Experience entry.
  • Military surgical training: your rating or specialty, the facility type and your case volume, written in civilian terms.
  • CNA, patient care tech or transport jobs: patients a shift and the hospital units you covered.
  • Hospital volunteering: under Volunteer Experience, with the hours and the department.

Don't

Recent surgical technology graduate seeking an entry-level position where I can grow my skills.

Do

Surgical technology graduate (AAS, 08/2026) with the CST exam scheduled for 11/2026, seeking a first scrub position in general or OB surgery. Logged 135 clinical cases, 80 in the first scrub role.

Even without a paid job, the objective carries a date, a target service and a case count.

Moving over from sterile processing, nursing assistant work or a military surgical role, keep the reverse-chronological order and lead with your new program and CST status. Under older jobs, keep the bullets that carry into the OR: instrument knowledge, aseptic technique, patient handling and work under time pressure. Our career-change resume examples show the layout, and our healthcare cover letter examples show how to explain the move in a short paragraph.

Surgical Tech resume FAQ

Should I put CST after my name on a surgical tech resume?

Yes, once NBSTSA has confirmed your pass. Write Surgical Technologist, CST in the headline and give the full credential, NBSTSA and the month you earned it under Certificates. Until then, show the exam date instead.

Can I apply for surgical tech jobs before I pass the CST exam?

Yes. Write CST exam scheduled with the month under Certificates and in your objective, and send the result to the employer as soon as you have it. If the posting lists the CST as required, give your expected result date in the cover letter.

Do surgical techs need a state license?

Only in some states, the BLS reports. Washington, for example, requires a registration through its Department of Health. If your state issues one, list it first under Certificates with the month it was issued.

How do I list clinical rotations on a surgical tech student resume?

Add 1 line under your program in Education with the sites and your total case count, split into first and second scrub roles if your program tracked them. If your rotations are your strongest experience, give them their own entry with 2 bullets naming the services.

Should I list every surgical specialty I have scrubbed for?

No. Name the services you scrubbed regularly in the job title or the first bullet, and put occasional cases in a second bullet only if the job ad names that specialty. A list of 10 specialties with no volume reads as exposure, not experience.

How long should a surgical tech resume be?

1 page for students, new graduates and most staff techs. Go to 2 pages only with 10+ years, a run of travel contracts or a lead or first assistant role, and keep your credentials and current job on page 1.

How do I list travel surgical tech contracts on a resume?

List the agency as 1 entry with its overall dates, then give each contract a bullet with the hospital, city, length and services you covered. A 13-week contract in cardiovascular surgery says more in 1 line than a separate entry per hospital.

What is the average surgical tech salary?

Surgical technologists earned a median of $64,650 a year in May 2025, according to BLS wage data. Your pay depends on your state, specialty, call schedule and credentials; leave salary off your resume and raise it at the offer stage.
