Student teaching is the semester when coursework turns into a room of real students, and your resume has to catch up with it. The grade you taught, the weeks you ran the class on your own, the lessons you planned and what your students learned are what a principal hiring for next fall wants to see. Count each one, and the semester reads like a first stretch of teaching, because that is what it was.
How to Write a Student Teacher Resume - Key Takeaways
- List student teaching under Work Experience as a full job, with the grade or subject, the school and its town, and start and end months.
- Open each placement with class size and the weeks you taught full time, then give results such as reading levels gained or unit test growth.
- Open with an objective naming the grade band you want, your program and your license status, since you have not held your own classroom yet.
- Put tests you have passed, such as edTPA or a Praxis exam, under Certificates with the month, and list a license in progress as expected with a date.
- Keep it to 1 page, with Education near the top until your first full year of teaching.
- Run the file through an ATS resume checker before uploading it to a district job portal.
What principals look for in a student teacher resume
A student teacher resume usually lands on 2 desks: a district HR screener checks your program, your tests and your license timeline, and a principal decides whether you could take over a classroom in August. O*NET lists adapting teaching methods and materials to students' varying needs, observing and evaluating students' performance, and meeting with parents about their children's progress among an elementary teacher's core tasks. Your placement is where you did those things for the first time, so show each one with the grade, the number of students and a result.
Give the resume these sections, under headings a district portal can read:
- Your name and contact details, under a headline like Elementary Education Student Teacher
- A 2 to 3 line objective at the top, which needs no heading of its own
- Education, placed near the top while you are still in your program
- Work Experience: student teaching first, then other jobs, newest first
- Certificates: tests passed, the license you expect and any CPR or first aid card
- Skills, including the classroom software you used
- If space allows: Key Achievements or Volunteer Experience, then Languages and Interests
Best format for a student teacher resume
Choose the reverse-chronological resume format, with your current placement at the top of Work Experience and older jobs below it. A principal reads your history to see how close you already are to teaching, and this order puts the classroom first. If you had 2 placements, such as a primary and an upper grade, give each its own entry with its own dates.
- Best for most student teachersReverse-chronologicalYour jobs, newest first, with your results under each one.Best for: A steady work history in your field
- FunctionalSkills grouped up top, with a short work history below.Best for: Gaps or very little experience
- CombinationA skills section first, then your full work history.Best for: A career change with strong skills
One page is enough for a student teacher, including graduate students coming from another career. Move Education above Work Experience while you are in your program, since the degree and the license it leads to are what the job requires, and move it down after your first year as a teacher of record.
| Setting | What to use |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 page |
| Section order | Education near the top, then student teaching, then other jobs |
| Job title line | Student Teacher plus grade or subject: Student Teacher, Grade 4 |
| Dates | MM/YYYY for the full placement, with Present while you are still in it |
| Personal information | Usually no photo in the US and Canada; keep your age, family status and SSN off too |
| File type | PDF for portals and email; bring printed copies to a teacher job fair |
Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. If you apply online and at a job fair, hand over the same version you upload.
Student teacher resume objective vs. summary
Use one test: have you been the teacher of record for your own class? If not, write a resume objective that names your program, your placement, 1 result and the grade band you want to teach. Graduate students with years in another field can write a short resume summary instead, leading with that experience and ending on the teaching role they are training for.
Student teacher resume objective formula
Degree program student at university, finishing a length grade or subject placement in month and year. 1 counted classroom result. Test or license status, seeking a grade band position for start date.
Example
Elementary education student at the University of Northern Iowa, finishing a 14-week grade 2 placement in 12/2026. Helped 11 of 15 students in 2 guided reading groups move up at least 1 reading level by the fall benchmark. Foundations of Reading Test passed, seeking a K-3 classroom for fall 2027.
Don't
Enthusiastic student teacher passionate about making a difference in the lives of young learners.
Do
Early childhood education senior with 3 placements from kindergarten to grade 3 and 60 lessons planned and taught. Seeking a full-day kindergarten or first grade classroom.
Placements, grades and a lesson count tell a principal more than any adjective.
How to write student teaching experience with numbers
Treat the placement as your current job: 3 to 4 bullets, verb first, each with a count. Start with the class itself, the grade, the number of students and when you took over full time, because every later result reads against it. Then pick numbers your classroom already tracks, from benchmark levels to unit tests, and say what you changed to move them, which is how you write achievements on a resume when the class was shared.
| Area | What to count | Example bullet |
|---|---|---|
| Class and takeover | Grade, students, weeks of full-time teaching | Led all subjects for 21 fourth graders during 5 weeks of full-time teaching. |
| Planning | Lessons and units written, standards covered | Wrote and taught a 3-week fractions unit of 12 lessons tied to state math standards. |
| Student learning | Pretest and post-test results, benchmark levels | Raised the class average on the fractions assessment from 48% on the pretest to 81% at the end of the unit. |
| Small groups | Students in intervention, how many met a goal | Ran daily phonics practice for 5 students below benchmark; 4 reached the winter benchmark. |
| Families | Newsletters, calls, conferences | Sent a weekly newsletter to 24 families and joined the cooperating teacher at 6 parent conferences. |
| Classroom routines | Office referrals, transitions, time on task | Introduced a morning meeting that lowered office referrals from 7 in the first month to 2 in the second. |
Work Experience
- Teach reading, math and science to 23 second graders, leading the class full time from week 6 of a 14-week placement.
- Run 3 guided reading groups of 6 to 8 students daily; 11 of 15 students in the 2 lower groups moved up at least 1 reading level by the October benchmark.
- Prepared progress notes for 23 family conferences in 10/2026 and led the reading portion with the cooperating teacher.
- Led homework help and activities for a group of 15 children from kindergarten to grade 3, 3 afternoons a week.
Don't
Assisted the cooperating teacher with lessons and grading.
Do
Graded weekly spelling checks for 22 students and used the scores to regroup 3 word study groups every Friday.
The rewrite shows a decision you made with the data, not only a task you helped with.
Don't
Responsible for classroom management.
Do
Took over the arrival routine in week 3 and cut the time from the first bell to the first lesson from 20 to 10 minutes.
Student teacher skills and classroom software
Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the district posting, keeping only ones your placement bullets prove. Lesson planning and classroom management fit every student teacher; IEP accommodations, early literacy or a content area such as chemistry only where your placement gave you real practice.
Hard skills for student teachers
- Lesson planning
- Standards-aligned instruction
- Differentiated instruction
- Guided reading groups
- Formative assessment
- Classroom management
- IEP accommodations
- Progress monitoring
- Co-teaching
- Family communication
Soft skills principals value in new teachers
- Acting on feedback
- Patience
- Clear directions
- Flexibility when a lesson stalls
- Collaboration with a cooperating teacher
- Organization
Name your classroom software in Skills and again inside a bullet where you used it. O*NET flags Google Docs, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel as hot technologies for elementary teachers and lists classroom apps such as ClassDojo and Edpuzzle. Add the platform your school ran, such as Google Classroom, Seesaw or Canvas, spelled the way the district spells it.
edTPA, Praxis and a pending teaching license on a student teacher resume
According to the BLS, licensing requirements vary by state but generally include a bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA, a completed student teaching program, a background check and a general teaching test plus a subject test. Private school teachers typically do not need a license. List certifications on your resume under Certificates as you pass each step, with the month, so a screener can see how far along you are.
| Credential | Issued by | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| edTPA | Developed by the Stanford Center for Assessment, Learning, and Equity (SCALE) | A portfolio built during student teaching across 3 tasks, Planning, Instruction and Assessment, with lesson plans and unedited classroom video; versions exist for 28 teaching fields. |
| Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects (5001) | ETS | 4 subtests (5002 to 5005) for a generalist elementary license covering reading and language arts, math, social studies and science; each state sets which Praxis tests it requires. |
| Foundations of Reading Test (FoRT) | Pearson | Required in Iowa for the K-6 elementary, Birth-Grade 3 inclusive and K-8 reading endorsements. |
| Iowa Initial Teaching License | State of Iowa | A completed Iowa-approved teacher preparation program, at least 1 endorsement and mandatory reporter training; valid for 2 years. |
How to list a license you do not hold yet
Write the license with the word expected and a month, never as if it were issued, and name the grade band or endorsement as your state words it. Tests go above it once passed, each with its month; leave scores off unless an application calls for them. A test you have booked but not taken belongs in your objective, not under Certificates.
Certificates
- Foundations of Reading Test (FoRT), Pearson, passed 09/2026
- Iowa mandatory reporter training: child abuse, 08/2026
- Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, American Red Cross, 08/2026
- Iowa Initial Teaching License, K-6 Teacher Elementary Classroom (102), expected 01/2027
How to list your education degree, GPA and placement
Follow the basics of listing education on a resume: degree, major, university, city and graduation date, written as expected while you are still enrolled. Add the endorsement your program leads to, since that is the license area a district hires for. The University of Northern Iowa's elementary education major, for example, leads to the K-6 Teacher Elementary Classroom (102) endorsement and requires a 2.50 GPA to student teach.
Put your GPA in 1 line under the degree when it is 3.5 or higher, or when a district requests it. States set the length of the placement: the Iowa Department of Education describes a 14-week student teaching requirement, so writing the weeks next to the course tells an out-of-state district what you completed.
Education
Expected 12/2026. K-6 Teacher Elementary Classroom (102) endorsement. GPA 3.6. Student teaching: EDUC 4134 Elementary Teaching, 12 credits, 14 weeks in grade 2.
Student teacher resumes by grade level, special education and graduate programs
The same layout works across programs; what changes is the evidence in your first bullet. Early childhood candidates name the age group and the routines they led, such as centers or circle time. Special education candidates should show IEP work, since the BLS lists developing and implementing IEPs and tracking students' progress among a special education teacher's duties: write how many students' goals you monitored and in which setting. Elementary candidates lead with reading and math groups, and secondary candidates with the number of sections and the course.
With few classroom jobs before your placement, count every role where you led children or taught a skill. Iowa now credits qualifying paraeducator or substitute work toward student teaching, from 1 to 10 weeks of its 14. Evidence to list:
- Paraeducator or substitute jobs: a full Work Experience entry with grades, days or students supported.
- Practicum and field hours before student teaching: 1 line under Education with the grades and the hours.
- Tutoring, camps and after-school programs: a Work Experience entry with group size and how often you met.
- Reading buddies, youth coaching or church programs: Volunteer Experience, with the number of children and hours a week.
Don't
Career changer looking to transition into teaching and share my love of science with students.
Do
MAT candidate with 6 years as a lab chemist, finishing a 12-week grades 9-12 chemistry placement with 2 sections of 28 students. Seeking a high school chemistry position for fall 2027.
A graduate student's past job is evidence when it is tied to the subject they will teach.
Graduate and career-change student teachers keep reverse-chronological order, list the master's and its expected date first under Education, and keep older bullets that carry over to the classroom, such as training staff or lab work. The BLS reports an alternative route to a license in every state for people who already hold a bachelor's degree, so name your route if you are on one. The career-change resume layout fits this case, and your cover letter explains the move in a few lines; these elementary teacher cover letter examples show the format.
Student Teacher resume FAQ
Does student teaching go under Work Experience or Education?
Under Work Experience, as your current job with the school, its city, the grade and the dates. Education keeps a short line with the course name and the weeks, so a screener sees the placement in both places without reading it twice.
Can I put a teaching license on my resume before it is issued?
Yes, if you mark it as expected with a month, such as expected 06/2027, and name the grade band or endorsement. Never write it as issued, and update the line as soon as the state approves your application.
Should I include my edTPA or Praxis scores on my resume?
No, list the test and the month you passed it under Certificates and leave the score off. If a district wants the score report, its application will ask for it; the resume only needs to show you passed.
Should I name my cooperating teacher on my resume?
No. Name the school, the grade and your own work. Your cooperating teacher and university supervisor are your strongest references, so put their names, titles and contact details on a separate reference page and ask their permission first.
How long should a student teacher resume be?
1 page. A placement, 1 or 2 jobs with children, your tests and your degree fit on a single page, and a principal at a job fair reads it in one pass. Career changers in graduate programs cut older bullets rather than add a page.
Do paraeducator or substitute jobs count on a student teacher resume?
Yes, and they are among the strongest entries you can list. Give each one its own Work Experience entry with the grades and how often you worked. Iowa even credits qualifying paraeducator or substitute work toward its 14-week student teaching requirement.
Should I put my GPA on a student teacher resume?
Only if it is 3.5 or higher, or the district requests it. Many programs set a minimum GPA to student teach, such as 2.50 at the University of Northern Iowa, so meeting it is assumed and adds nothing on its own.
How much do elementary school teachers make?
The BLS reports that the median annual wage for elementary school teachers, except special education, was $63,970 in May 2025. First-year pay follows each district's salary schedule, so leave pay off your resume and check the schedule before an offer.
