24 Professor Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Department chairs and search committees read a professor resume for your rank, the courses you teach, the research you publish and win funding for, and the service you give. Use these examples and the guide below to count that work and to place your doctorate, grants and teaching credentials where a committee checks first.

Professor resume example

Teaching, research and service make up a professor's job, and a search committee wants evidence of all three. Members check the courses you have taught, what you have published or won grants for and the students you have mentored. A resume is not a full CV, so years of academic work have to be cut down to 1 or 2 pages. For each part of the job, choose the strongest example and put a number on it.

How to Write a Professor Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Send a 1- to 2-page resume to adjunct, community college, teaching-focused and administrative postings, and a full academic CV whenever the posting names a CV.
  • Use reverse-chronological order and give every appointment its rank, department, institution, city and dates in MM/YYYY.
  • Open with a 2- to 3-line summary that names your rank, field and type of institution, plus 1 teaching result and 1 research result.
  • Count what chairs track: sections a term, enrollment, evaluation averages with their scale, peer-reviewed articles, grant dollars and students mentored.
  • Write your doctorate by its full name with the school, the year and a 1-line dissertation title, and a degree in progress with the word expected.
  • Keep your 2 or 3 strongest publications or grants for Key Achievements, then put the file through an ATS resume checker before you upload it.

What search committees look for in a professor resume

A department chair reads your resume to see whether you can cover the courses on next year's schedule, keep a research record moving and carry your share of department work. The BLS lists writing a syllabus, teaching courses in the subject, grading students' work, advising students and serving on academic or administrative committees as core duties of postsecondary teachers. It adds that many conduct research, publish scholarly papers and books, and apply for grants to fund that research.

Your bullets should show those 3 parts of the job with their size and result, weighted toward what the posting stresses. A teaching college reads for load and student outcomes first; a research university reads for publications and funding. Organize the page with these sections:

  • Name, plus a headline giving your rank, field and doctorate (for example, Associate Professor of Biology, Ph.D.) and contact details
  • A 2- to 3-line profile under your name, which appears without a heading
  • Work Experience, with rank and department in every title line
  • Education, with each degree's full name and your dissertation title
  • Skills, with your learning platform and research software
  • Certificates, for teaching credentials or a license in your field
  • Optional: Key Achievements for publications, grants or awards, or Volunteer Experience, plus Languages

Best format for a professor resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your current appointment first, each listed with rank, department, institution, city and dates in MM/YYYY. Faculty careers climb through ranks that every committee knows, and this order traces the climb, from graduate instructor or visiting professor to assistant, associate and full professor. Practitioners moving from industry into teaching keep the same order, with their field experience in the first lines of the summary.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a professor resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Professor resume or academic CV: which one to send

Read the application instructions and send what they name. Tenure-track and research postings usually ask for a CV, which lists every article, grant, course and talk with no page limit, while adjunct, community college, online program and administrative postings often accept a resume. The difference between a CV and a resume is scope: the resume picks your strongest evidence for one job, and an academic CV example shows the complete record.

Early in a teaching career, 1 page is enough; a longer record with grants and a promotion earns a second page. Either way, page 1 carries your current appointment and your highest degree.

Professor resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page early in your career, 2 pages with a longer record; the full academic CV has no limit
Job title lineRank plus department: Associate Professor of Biology, or Adjunct Professor, School of Business
DatesMM/YYYY for every appointment and degree, with Present for current roles
Publications2 or 3 of the strongest in bullets or Key Achievements; the complete list stays on the CV
Typeface1 clean font such as Calibri, Arial or Georgia, at 10.5 to 12 pt for the body
Photo and personal dataNo photo for most US and Canadian postings; drop marital status, birth date and SSN
File typePDF, unless the college's application portal asks for Word

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Faculty applications usually go through a college's online portal, where the resume sits beside a cover letter and teaching statement, so a plain, single-file PDF with standard headings uploads and parses cleanly.

Professor resume summary vs. objective

The test is whether you have held a faculty appointment. If you have taught as an adjunct, visiting or tenure-track professor, write a summary that names your rank, field, institution type and best results. If your teaching so far came from graduate school, write an objective naming the role you want and the courses you have already taught. The adjunct faculty summary and objective examples show both versions side by side.

Professor resume summary formula

Rank of field with X years at type of institution. Courses taught and student volume, counted. Research, grant or publication record, counted.

Example

Associate professor of biology with 10 years at a liberal arts college. Teach genetics and cell biology to about 210 students a year. Principal investigator on a 3-year, $386,000 NSF grant, with 11 peer-reviewed articles.

Don't

Dedicated educator passionate about student learning, committed to academic excellence and lifelong scholarship.

Do

Assistant professor of chemistry with 4 years at a regional public university, teaching 2 sections of organic chemistry a term with labs. Published 5 articles with undergraduate co-authors since 2022.

The stronger version gives rank, setting, teaching load and a research count a chair can check.

How to write professor work experience bullets with numbers

Give your current appointment 3 to 4 bullets, older ones 1 to 3, and start each with a verb. Write achievements on your resume instead of the duties in your faculty handbook: everyone teaches and grades, so say what, for how many, and what changed. Cover teaching, research and service across your bullets, and give each promotion its own title line with its dates.

Numbers that prove faculty work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Teaching loadSections a term, enrollment, credit hoursTeach a 4-4 load of introductory statistics, about 140 students a semester.
Course outcomesPass or DFW rates, evaluation averages with the scaleRaised the pass rate in College Algebra from 64% to 77% over 3 years after adding weekly problem sessions.
ResearchPeer-reviewed articles, books, chaptersPublished 3 peer-reviewed articles and 1 book chapter on wetland soils between 2023 and 2026.
GrantsDollars, funder, years, your roleCo-PI on a $1.2M, 4-year NIH award, managing funds for 2 graduate assistants.
MentoringTheses supervised, student research, presentationsSupervised 8 senior theses and 3 master's theses; 5 students presented at national meetings.
ServiceCommittees, searches, programs reviewedLed a 6-person search committee that filled 2 tenure-track lines in 2025.

Here is one faculty member's record written that way. The current role covers teaching, research, mentoring and service in 4 bullets, and the earlier rank keeps 2.

Professor skills and teaching software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that the posting names and that a bullet on your page backs up. Course design and assessment fit almost every faculty resume; grant writing, research methods and accreditation reporting belong only where you have done them.

Hard skills for professors

  • Course and syllabus design
  • Lecture and seminar teaching
  • Online and hybrid course delivery
  • Student assessment and rubrics
  • Curriculum development
  • Research design and methods
  • Grant writing
  • Peer-reviewed publishing
  • Undergraduate research mentoring
  • Program assessment and accreditation reports

Soft skills department chairs value

  • Clear explanation of hard material
  • Constructive feedback on student work
  • Collegial committee work
  • Balancing teaching and research time
  • Public speaking
  • Mentoring across backgrounds

Put your platforms and research software in the Skills section, then use each one in a bullet to show what you built or analyzed in it. O*NET's profile for business teachers, postsecondary, flags a learning management system as in-demand technology and IBM SPSS Statistics, SAS, R and Microsoft Excel as hot technologies, and it also lists Instructure Canvas, Blackboard, Turnitin and Google Scholar. Name the platform the college uses, such as Canvas or Blackboard, and the statistics package your field publishes with.

Teaching certificates and field licenses for professors

No license is required to teach at a college in general, so the Certificates section holds 2 kinds of credential. The first is a license in your field: the BLS says postsecondary teachers who prepare students for a licensed occupation may need, or benefit from, that same credential, such as an RN license for nursing faculty. The second is a teaching credential, which carries the most weight in online and teaching-focused hiring. List certifications on your resume with the issuer and the month and year.

Credentials professors list and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Certification in Effective TeachingAssociation of College and University Educators (ACUE)4 pathway courses or 1 comprehensive course; ACUE states it is endorsed by the American Council on Education.
Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR)Quality MattersA 2-week online workshop at 10 to 12 hours a week, or 7.5 hours live online; it is the prerequisite for the QM Peer Reviewer Course.
License in your field (RN, CPA, PE and others)Your state licensing boardThe same license a practitioner holds, kept current, when you teach students heading for that licensed job.

How to show AACSB faculty status on a business professor resume

AACSB's standards classify faculty at accredited business schools as Scholarly Academic (SA), Practice Academic (PA), Scholarly Practitioner (SP) or Instructional Practitioner (IP), and keeping a status depends on activity that fits it plus the school's teaching effectiveness criteria. If your current school has classified you and the posting mentions AACSB, name your status in your summary. Back it with the matching evidence in your bullets: recent peer-reviewed articles for SA, current consulting or industry work for PA or IP.

  • Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR), Quality Matters, 01/2021

How to list a PhD and dissertation on a professor resume

In the BLS's description, postsecondary teachers typically need a Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in their field, while community colleges may hire candidates with a master's degree. The basics of listing education on a resume apply here: the degree, the school, its city and the dates, newest first. For a professor, the degree is part of the qualification, so write its full name and field exactly as the diploma does, and leave GPA off once you hold a doctorate.

Add the dissertation title as 1 line under the doctorate, shortened if it runs long. A doctorate still in progress takes the word expected and a real month and year, such as Ph.D. in Economics, expected 05/2027, with a line saying your coursework and exams are complete.

Sample education entry: doctorate with dissertation

Education

Ph.D. in Biology08/2009 – 05/2014
Washington State University | Pullman, WA

Dissertation: root architecture and drought response in bluebunch wheatgrass.

Adjunct, new Ph.D. and career-change professor resumes

Fresh out of a doctoral program, you are often aiming at a visiting or adjunct appointment, and adjuncts, the BLS notes, usually spend most of their time teaching. So lead with teaching, written as a job. If your record is thin, the entry-level resume layout works: an objective, Education high on the page, then these items with counts:

  • Instructor of record or teaching assistant roles: course titles, sections, students per section, and whether you wrote the syllabus, under Work Experience.
  • Research during the doctorate or a postdoc: articles published or under review, conference talks and any funding you helped win.
  • Guest lectures and summer courses: the course, the institution and the number of sessions.
  • Teaching training: a campus teaching center certificate or an online teaching workshop, under Certificates.

Don't

Recent Ph.D. graduate seeking a faculty position where I can share my love of teaching.

Do

New Ph.D. in sociology with 6 semesters as instructor of record, seeking a visiting assistant professor role. Taught 11 sections of Introduction to Sociology and have 2 articles under review.

Even an objective should carry the course and a count.

Coming from industry to teach business, nursing, law or engineering, stay with reverse-chronological order and start with a summary that names your years in the field and any teaching you have done, such as corporate training or a course taught as an adjunct. A career-change resume reads best when the first bullets under your current job are the ones a student would learn from. Explain the move in your cover letter, in 2 or 3 sentences, and leave the teaching philosophy for the teaching statement.

Professor resume FAQ

Should a professor use a resume or a CV?

Use whichever the posting names. Tenure-track and research roles usually ask for a full academic CV with every publication and grant. Adjunct, community college, online and administrative roles often accept a 1- to 2-page resume that picks your strongest teaching and research results.

How long should a professor resume be?

1 page in your first years of teaching, and 2 pages once you have several appointments, funded grants or a promotion. If the record runs longer than that, the posting probably wants your academic CV instead.

How many publications should I list on a professor resume?

2 or 3, chosen for the job you want. Put them in Key Achievements or inside the bullet for the appointment where you wrote them, with the journal and the year, and keep the full list for your CV.

How do I show a promotion or tenure on my resume?

Give each rank its own title line with its own dates, even at the same college, such as Assistant Professor 08/2018 to 07/2024 and Associate Professor from 08/2024. If you were granted tenure, say so in that rank's title line, its first bullet or your summary.

How do I list adjunct jobs at several colleges at the same time?

Give each college its own Work Experience entry with overlapping dates, the courses and the sections a term. Put the college where you teach the most first, and cut older or 1-term appointments to a single bullet each so the resume stays within 2 pages.

Should I write ABD on my resume?

No. Write the degree with the word expected and a month and year, then a line saying your coursework and comprehensive exams are complete. ABD is shorthand that HR screeners outside your department may not read the same way.

Can I become a college professor with a master's degree?

Yes, at many community colleges. The BLS says postsecondary teachers typically need a doctorate, but community colleges may hire those with a master's degree. Put the master's and your graduate credits in the subject you would teach near the top of the page.

Do I need a teaching certificate to become a professor?

No. College teaching has no general license, and your doctorate is the main qualification. A teaching credential such as ACUE's Certification in Effective Teaching or the Quality Matters APPQMR workshop helps most when the posting stresses teaching or online delivery.

Should I list grants I applied for but did not win?

No. List funded grants with the funder, the amount, the years and your role, such as PI or Co-PI. A proposal still under review can go in 1 bullet marked under review, and declined proposals stay off.

How do I move from industry into teaching at a college?

Start with an adjunct or part-time course in your field, since the BLS expects colleges to hire more part-time teachers. On the resume, name your years of practice, any license you hold and every training or teaching session you have led.
