Photographer resume example

Photography jobs are won on a good eye and kept on reliability. A studio owner or photo editor wants to know what you shoot, who you shoot it for, which lights and editing software you work with, and whether edited images reach the client on time. Pictures are easy to show and harder to count, so many photographers leave the numbers out. Sessions booked, images delivered, turnaround in hours and clients who came back are the counts that prove the work behind the portfolio.

How to Write a Photographer Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Use the reverse-chronological format on 1 page, with a headline that names your genre, such as Commercial Photographer, Product and Food.
  • Put a count in every bullet: sessions a week, images delivered, turnaround in hours or clients who rebooked.
  • Give freelance work 1 Work Experience entry under your business name, with client types and yearly totals in the bullets.
  • List Photoshop and Lightroom by name in Skills and prove each one in a bullet about the work you did in it.
  • Add an FAA Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107) under Certificates if you fly a drone for paid work.
  • Send the portfolio link in the application form and the cover letter, then run the file through an ATS resume checker before you apply.

What studios and photo editors look for in a photographer resume

The BLS lists planning a photograph's composition, working with lighting equipment, editing in photo-enhancing software, and archiving and managing images among a photographer's usual duties, and many photographers also market their own services. O*NET rates setting aperture, shutter speed and focus as the top core task, with moving images to a computer for editing and archiving close behind. A hiring studio looks for those steps in your bullets, tied to a genre and a client type it recognizes.

Build the page from these sections, in headings screening software can read:

  • Name, a headline with your genre (Wedding Photographer, Portrait and Family), email, phone and city
  • A 2- or 3-line opening summary, printed without a heading
  • Work Experience, current job first, with freelance work as one entry
  • Skills, with your editing software among them
  • Certificates, such as Part 107 for drone work
  • Education
  • Optional: Key Achievements for awards and publications, Volunteer Experience or Languages

Best format for a photographer resume

Choose the reverse-chronological resume format: latest job first, each with your title, the studio, publication or business, where it is, and start and end months as MM/YYYY. A photography career usually runs from assistant or second shooter to photographer, then to senior, lead or studio owner, and this order shows each step. Staff jobs and freelance work sit in the same timeline, so a reader can see what you were shooting in any given year.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a photographer resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Stay on 1 page until you have about 10 years of paid work. After that, 2 pages suit a senior or lead photographer with staff, agency and freelance work to show, as long as your current role and your genre sit high on page 1.

Photographer resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 only after about 10 years of paid shoots
DatesMM/YYYY for every entry, Present for the job you hold now
HeadlineTitle plus genre: Commercial Photographer, Product and Food
Freelance work1 entry under your business name, dated from your first paid booking
Portfolio linkIn the application form's website field and your cover letter
Headshot, age and ID detailsRarely expected in the US and Canada, even from photographers; drop your date of birth, marital status and SSN
File typeA PDF named with your name, unless the posting asks for Word

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Photographers are no exception, since the portfolio already carries your images. If you add a headshot anyway, keep it simple and well lit, because a photo editor will judge it as your own work.

Photographer resume summary vs. objective

One test decides which to write: have you been paid to photograph for at least a year? If yes, write a resume summary with your genre, your years, your client type, your software and 1 result. If not, write a resume objective that names the kind of studio or role you want and the shoots you have already done, from assisting to student assignments.

Photographer resume summary formula

Genre photographer with X years shooting for client type, editing in software. Your biggest volume or turnaround figure. Certificate or specialty.

Example

Commercial photographer with 8 years shooting product and food work for retail brands, editing in Capture One and Photoshop. Delivered 2,400 catalog images in 2025 with a 2-day average turnaround. Certified Professional Photographer (CPP) with an FAA Part 107 certificate for aerial work.

Don't

Passionate photographer with a creative eye who loves capturing special moments.

Do

Real estate photographer with 5 years of interior, exterior and twilight work, shooting about 26 listings a month for brokerages and delivering edited sets within 24 hours.

The second version gives the genre, the volume and the deadline a broker cares about.

How to write photographer work experience bullets with numbers

Your current job takes 3 to 4 bullets; older ones need 1 to 3. Open with the work itself, the genre and the client type, then add the number that shows the size of it: sessions, images, turnaround or repeat bookings. Studios already track most of these, which makes them the quickest way to write achievements on your resume instead of a list of tasks.

Numbers that prove photography work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Portrait sessionsSessions a week, average print or package orderPhotographed 11 family and senior portrait sessions a week and raised the average print order to $410.
Editing and deliveryGalleries delivered, days or hours to deliveryRebuilt the culling and color workflow for 47 wedding galleries, cutting delivery from 5 weeks to 3.
Client baseRepeat clients, referrals, bookings a seasonGrew referral bookings to 63% of the studio's 2025 calendar through same-week sneak peeks.
News and editorialAssignments, frames filed, front pagesFiled about 95 frames a week for a daily newspaper, including 3 front-page photos a month.
Stock and licensingImages licensed, downloads, revenueLicensed 1,100 stock images in 2025 from a library of food and travel work.
Aerial workFlights, listings or sites coveredFlew Part 107 drone shoots for 30 property listings a month alongside ground photography.

Here is how a commercial photographer's entry reads with those counts in place. The current job carries the clients and the volume, and the assistant job keeps 2 lines.

Freelance and staff photography on one resume

The BLS counts self-employed workers at 67% of photography jobs, so freelance work belongs on the page. List it as a job: your business name or Freelance Photographer as the title, your city, and dates from your first paid booking. Under it, describe client types and yearly totals rather than a long list of names. Freelance work that runs beside a staff job gets its own entry with overlapping dates.

Photography skills and editing software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting, and keep only the ones a bullet can back up. Lighting and composition fit almost every photographer; tethered capture, drone flight or color management belong only where your work used them.

Hard skills for photographers

  • Studio and off-camera lighting
  • Composition and posing
  • Manual exposure control
  • Raw processing and color correction
  • Retouching and compositing
  • Tethered capture
  • Product and tabletop photography
  • Event and candid coverage
  • Drone photography (Part 107)
  • Image archiving and metadata

Soft skills clients and studios value

  • Directing people on set
  • Calm under deadline
  • Client communication
  • Reliability on shoot days
  • Attention to detail
  • Budget and time estimates

Name your editing software exactly. O*NET flags Adobe Photoshop as both a hot and an in-demand technology for photographers and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom as in demand, with Adobe Creative Cloud, Illustrator, InDesign and After Effects also listed as hot. Write the Lightroom version you use, Lightroom Classic or Lightroom, and add tethering software such as Capture One where the posting asks for it. Camera bodies belong in a bullet only when the job names a system you shoot with.

Part 107, CPP and Adobe certificates on a photographer resume

No license is needed to work as a photographer, with one exception the BLS points out: if you fly a drone commercially, you need FAA certification. Professional and software credentials are optional, but each one gives a reader a quick, checkable signal. Group them under Certificates and list certifications on your resume with the issuing body and month for each.

Certificates that photographers list and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107)Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)Age 16 or older, English proficiency and a pass on the Unmanned Aircraft General, Small (UAG) knowledge exam; free online recurrent training every 24 calendar months.
Certified Professional Photographer (CPP)Professional Photographers of America (PPA)Online module exams passed at 70% or higher, then 3 required images in the Technical Image Evaluation; 15 continuing education units every 3 years to keep it.
Adobe Certified Professional: Visual Design Using Adobe PhotoshopAdobe, delivered by Certiport1 exam, with no degree or other prerequisite; valid for 3 years from the date of issue.

How to write the Part 107 line

Write the certificate by its FAA name, Remote Pilot Certificate, add Part 107 in parentheses so a keyword search finds it, and give the month it was issued. Keep up the free recurrent training, since the FAA requires it within the previous 24 calendar months before you fly under Part 107. Leave the certificate number off the page and share it only when an employer asks for it.

Sample Certificates section: drone, PPA and Adobe credentials

Certificates

  • Certified Professional Photographer (CPP), Professional Photographers of America, 10/2025
  • Adobe Certified Professional: Visual Design Using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe, 06/2024
  • Remote Pilot Certificate (Part 107), Federal Aviation Administration, 04/2023

How to list a photography degree or training

The BLS says photographers typically need a high school diploma to enter the field, and that many take classes or earn a certificate or degree in photography or a related field to build their skills. A BFA, a community college certificate or a workshop that ends in a credential can all go on the page, as long as each one is specific about what you studied.

The usual rules for listing education on a resume apply: the degree, then the school with its city, then the month you graduated. Recent graduates can add a GPA of 3.5 or above and their senior thesis or final project in 1 line; after a few years of paid work, the degree, school and date are enough. Short courses go under Certificates only when they end in a credential, never as a list of workshops.

Sample education entry: photography BFA

Education

BFA in Photographic and Imaging Arts05/2018
Rochester Institute of Technology | Rochester, NY

Advertising photography option. GPA 3.6. Senior thesis: 24 product still lifes lit with a 2-light setup.

Entry-level and career-change photographer resumes

Without paid photography jobs yet, open with an objective and fill Work Experience with the closest thing you have: assisting, second shooting, a campus publication or a part-time job at a portrait studio. Count the shoots and frames in each, the way a staff photographer would. The entry-level resume examples show how to order a thin first page.

  • Assisting and second shooting: the photographer's genre, the number of shoots and what you handled, such as lighting, tethering or backups.
  • Student and campus work: games, events or issues covered for a school paper or yearbook, with frames filed.
  • Personal projects: a series with a theme, the number of images and where it was shown or published, in 1 bullet.
  • Volunteer shoots: nonprofit events or shelter adoption photos under Volunteer Experience, with the count of images delivered.

Don't

Recent photography graduate eager to gain experience and grow my skills.

Do

BFA graduate (05/2026) seeking a studio assistant role in sports or commercial photography. Assisted a portrait studio for 2 summers and shot 400+ frames across a college football season for the campus paper.

An objective works when it names the role, the genre and the work already done.

Moving into photography from another career, keep reverse-chronological order and put your photography work first, paid or not. Older jobs keep the bullets that transfer to a shoot: client service, scheduling, sales or editing on a deadline. The career-change resume examples show the layout, and a short paragraph in your cover letter can explain the switch; writing a cover letter with your portfolio link in the first lines gets the reader to your images faster.

Photographer resume FAQ

Where should a photographer put a portfolio link?

In the application form's website or portfolio field and in the first paragraph of your cover letter. If you apply by email, add it to the email as well. Point the link at a gallery for the genre you are applying for, not your home page.

Do I need a Part 107 certificate to list drone photography on my resume?

Yes, if the drone work was paid. The FAA requires a Remote Pilot Certificate under Part 107 for commercial flights, so list the certificate under Certificates with its issue month. Drone shots taken only for fun belong in a personal project line, not in a client bullet.

Do you need a degree to be a photographer?

No. A high school diploma is the usual entry requirement, per the BLS. A degree still helps with some employers, so list yours if you have one.

How do I list freelance photography on a resume?

As 1 Work Experience entry under your business name or Freelance Photographer, dated from your first paid booking. Under it, describe your client types and give yearly totals such as sessions shot, galleries delivered and the share of repeat clients.

Which editing software should a photographer list?

Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom first, since O*NET lists both as in-demand technologies for photographers. Write the Lightroom version you use, add Capture One if you shoot tethered, and name each program again in a bullet that shows what you did with it.

Should I list my camera gear on a photographer resume?

Only when the posting names a system or a piece of kit. A studio that shoots medium format or a newsroom with its own bodies may ask for it; otherwise skills such as lighting, tethering and retouching say more than a list of lenses.

Can a photographer use a creative resume template?

Yes, as long as screening software can still read it. A clean layout with 1 accent color and standard headings shows taste without getting in the way, and your images do the creative work in the portfolio.

How much do photographers make?

Photographers earned a median of $44,660 a year in May 2025, per BLS wage data. Pay varies widely by genre, location and how much of your work is freelance. Keep pay off the resume and raise it once an offer is on the table.
