18 Lawyer Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Hiring partners, general counsel and public defender offices read a lawyer resume for 3 things first: where you can practice, what kinds of matters you handle and how much of that work you ran. Use these examples and the guide below to show each one in numbers, from a first clerkship to a partner track.

Lawyer resume example

People who hire lawyers read closely for a living, and they notice when a resume stays vague. They want your practice area, the state where you are admitted, the legal work you do week to week and results you can point to, such as cases carried or deals closed. A law firm, a public defender's office and an in-house legal team each look for something different, so one version rarely serves all three. Adjusting yours for each is part of the job.

How to Write a Lawyer Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Choose reverse-chronological order on 1 page, moving to 2 only for a long trial, deal or management record.
  • Write your practice area and licensing state in the headline, such as Lawyer, Estate Planning, licensed in Iowa.
  • Match the page to its reader: matter counts for a firm, caseload and trials for a public defender's office, contract volume for an in-house team.
  • Give each bullet a legal number, such as cases carried, motions won, estates closed or deal value, and describe matters by type instead of client name.
  • Open Certificates with your state bar admission, then each federal court admission by its full name.
  • Before you send it, test the file in an ATS resume checker, because firm and government portals parse it into fields.

What hiring attorneys look for in a lawyer resume

The BLS describes lawyers as people who advise and represent clients in criminal or civil matters, research and analyze legal issues, and prepare and file documents such as lawsuits, contracts and wills. O*NET adds interpreting laws and regulations for clients and predicting how a case is likely to come out from precedent. A hiring attorney wants to see which of those you do every week, in what kind of matter, and at what volume.

What counts as strong evidence depends on who is hiring. The BLS counts legal services firms as the largest employer of lawyers, followed by self-employment and local, state and federal government, and each reads a resume for something different.

What each legal employer reads a resume for
EmployerWhat they check firstPut near the top
Law firmPractice area, matter types and your share of the workYour practice area in the headline and a matter count opening your bullets
Public defender or prosecutor's officeCaseload, courtroom time and trialsOpen cases carried, hearings and trials to verdict
In-house legal departmentBusiness judgment, contract volume and speedContracts handled, turnaround and the teams you advised
Judge hiring a law clerkResearch and writingJournal role, writing work and grades if they are strong
Government agencyThe statutes and rules you worked underAgency hearings, enforcement matters or rules you drafted

Whichever reader you have, the page uses the same sections:

  • Name, headline (practice area plus licensing state) and contact details
  • A 2- to 3-line summary below your name, with no heading above it
  • Work Experience, newest role on top, clerkships included
  • Certificates, starting with your state bar admission, then court admissions
  • Skills, with your research and document software
  • Education, with your J.D. first
  • Optional: Volunteer Experience for pro bono work, Key Achievements or Languages

Best format for a lawyer resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format, with your newest role on top and each entry carrying your title, the firm, office or court, its city, and the dates you held it in MM/YYYY. Hiring attorneys read a legal career as a path, such as clerk to associate to senior associate, or assistant public defender to supervising attorney, and this order lets them follow it in one pass. It also shows how long you stayed at each employer, which firms check.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a lawyer resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Stay on 1 page until you have roughly 10 years of practice. Partners, senior counsel and chief legal officers with many trials, deals or offices can use 2 pages, provided page 1 holds the current role and the admissions. A long list of matters goes on a separate representative matters list, which a firm will ask for when it wants one.

Lawyer resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page for about the first 10 years; 2 for partners, senior counsel or a long trial record
HeadlineTitle, practice area and state: Lawyer, Estate Planning, licensed in Iowa
Matter descriptionsType, court or agency and dollar value; client names only when the matter is public
DatesMonth and year (MM/YYYY) for every role, and Present for the one you hold now
TypefaceOne readable font at 10 to 12 pt in black, with no shaded boxes behind headings
Photo, age and bar numberRarely a photo for jobs in the US or Canada; leave out age, family status and your bar number too
File typePDF by default, and a Word file only when the firm's portal requests one

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Legal hiring is conservative on layout too: a plain page with standard headings reads well on paper, in a partner's inbox and in a government application portal.

Lawyer resume summary vs. objective

The test is whether you already hold a legal job. If you practice law or have clerked for a judge, write a resume summary that names your practice area, your state, your years and 1 result. If you are waiting for bar results with no legal job since law school, or moving into law from another career, write a resume objective that names the role you want and the legal work you have done so far. Write it after your bullets, and borrow its number from them.

Lawyer resume summary formula

X-year practice area lawyer for type of client, licensed in state. What you handle and how much of it. 1 result a partner or client would repeat.

Example

9-year business and estate planning lawyer for family-owned companies, licensed in Iowa. Draft about 70 estate plans and 12 business succession plans a year. Guided 6 family companies through ownership transfers to the next generation, each completed without litigation.

Don't

Experienced attorney with excellent research, writing and negotiation skills who is passionate about justice.

Do

Insurance defense lawyer licensed in Missouri with 5 years defending trucking and premises liability claims. Resolved 41 of 47 closed files without trial and first-chaired 2 jury trials.

Now a reader knows the practice area, the state, the years, a volume and a trial record.

How to write lawyer work experience bullets with numbers

Your current role takes 3 to 4 bullets and earlier ones 1 to 4, fewer the further back they go, each starting with a verb. Every practice area has its own unit of work, from cases carried to deals closed, and a bullet that counts it tells a hiring attorney how much responsibility you held. For titles and dates, list work experience on a resume as you would in any field; for the bullets, use the legal measures below.

Numbers that prove legal work, by practice type
Practice typeWhat to countExample bullet
Civil litigationDepositions, hearings, trials and your chair roleTook 14 depositions and defended 9 in a 2-year construction defect case.
Criminal defense or prosecutionOpen cases, felony share, trials and outcomesCarried about 90 open misdemeanor and felony cases and tried 6 to verdict in 2025.
TransactionsDeals, deal value, documents draftedClosed 9 credit facilities totaling $210M as lead associate for borrowers.
Regulatory and complianceAgency filings, inquiries, auditsAnswered 30 state insurance department inquiries with no fines assessed.
Plaintiff practiceIntake, cases signed, recoveriesScreened 300 intake calls a year, signed 45 cases and recovered $4.6M in settlements.
In-house adviceContracts reviewed, turnaround, policiesReviewed 600 vendor contracts a year and cut the median turnaround from 8 to 4 business days.

Here is a business and estate planning lawyer's entry with those measures in place. Each bullet names a volume and a scale, no client is named, and the earlier job keeps fewer lines.

Legal skills and research software for a lawyer resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that the opening calls for and your bullets already show. Litigators lead with motion practice and depositions, transactional lawyers with drafting and due diligence, and estate or family lawyers with client counseling and the documents they prepare.

Hard skills for lawyers

  • Legal research and writing
  • Motion practice
  • Depositions
  • Trial preparation
  • Contract drafting and review
  • Negotiation
  • Due diligence
  • Estate and trust drafting
  • Regulatory analysis
  • Client counseling

Soft skills hiring attorneys value

  • Plain-English explanations for clients
  • Composure in court
  • Discretion
  • Managing a full caseload
  • Listening in client interviews
  • Working with opposing counsel

Add your software to the Skills section by its exact name and prove each tool in a bullet. O*NET marks Microsoft Office as in-demand and Adobe Acrobat as a hot technology for lawyers, and lists Thomson Reuters Westlaw, LexisNexis and Shepard's Citations among their research tools, with HotDocs for document assembly and CaseMap for case analysis. Write the product as you used it: Westlaw Precision only for work after Thomson Reuters introduced it in 09/2022, Westlaw Edge from 07/2018, and plain Westlaw before that.

Bar admissions, court admissions and board certification

The BLS explains that most states admit lawyers who graduated from an accredited law school, passed the written bar exam and satisfied the board on character, and that practicing in another state usually means meeting that state's rules too. Federal courts and specialty boards add their own admissions on top. List certifications on your resume in 1 Certificates section, with each issuer and year, so where you can appear is clear at a glance.

Lawyer admissions and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
State bar admissionThe state's highest court, usually through its board of law examinersIn most states, a degree from an accredited law school, a passed written bar exam and a character review, under that state's own rules.
U.S. District Court admissionEach federal district courtRules vary by court. The Southern District of Iowa asks for good standing everywhere you are admitted, a petition signed by a judge and an attorney admitted there, and a $199 fee.
Supreme Court of the United States barSupreme Court of the United StatesAt least 3 years in the bar of a state's highest court with no adverse discipline in that time, 2 sponsors who are members of the Court's bar, and a $200 fee.
Certified Specialist (California)The State Bar of California5 years of continuous practice, at least 25% of your work in the specialty, a written exam, extra continuing education and favorable evaluations from lawyers and judges, in 1 of 11 areas.

How to write a court admission line

List your state admissions first, newest first, each with the admitting court and the month. Follow with federal district and appellate courts, written out in full, and leave your bar number off. A board certification goes after the admissions and also belongs in your headline.

Sample Certificates section: state and federal court admissions

Certificates

  • Iowa bar admission, Iowa Supreme Court, 10/2017
  • U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, admitted 01/2018
  • U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa, admitted 03/2019

How to list a J.D., law review and clinics on a lawyer resume

Becoming a lawyer takes about 7 years of full-time study after high school, the BLS reports, and most states require a J.D. from an accredited law school, whose courses include contracts, civil procedure and legal writing. List education on a resume with the J.D. first and your bachelor's degree below it, each with school, location and month of graduation. Use the name the school carried in the year you graduated.

In your first years of practice, add what a judge or hiring partner reads for: Latin honors, a journal role, moot court and any clinic, with a count of what you did there. Give your GPA or class rank only when it helps you or the employer requests it. Once your bullets carry 5 or more years of matters, cut the entry back to degrees, honors and your journal.

Sample education entry: J.D. with a journal and a clinic

Education

Juris Doctor (J.D.)05/2017
Drake University Law School | Des Moines, IA

Articles Editor, Drake Law Review. Estate planning clinic: 18 client plans drafted under supervision.

B.A. in English05/2014
University of Northern Iowa | Cedar Falls, IA

New lawyer, law clerk and career-change resumes

Many graduates start with a judicial clerkship. The BLS says clerkships usually run 1- or 2-year terms, that judges may prefer clerks who have passed the bar, and that a clerk can do the job without a license. Many federal judges take clerkship applications through OSCAR, the federal judiciary's online application system for law clerks. With no legal job yet, follow the entry-level attorney layout, or the law school one while you are still a student, and count your legal work the way a practicing lawyer would.

  • Judicial clerkship or externship: the court, bench memos written and opinions or orders you drafted.
  • Clinic work: clients served, hearings you attended and filings prepared under a supervising lawyer.
  • Summer associate or law clerk jobs: research memos, the practice groups you worked in and any drafting that was filed.
  • Moot court or a writing award: the round you reached, listed under Key Achievements.
  • Pro bono and legal aid: hours and matters, under Volunteer Experience.

Don't

Motivated law graduate eager to begin my legal career at a firm where I can make a difference.

Do

Newly admitted lawyer finishing a 1-year state appellate clerkship, seeking a civil litigation associate role. Drafted 60 bench memos and 14 draft opinions on contract and tort appeals.

Even before your first legal job, give an admission, a court and a count of written work.

Paralegals who earned a J.D., and lawyers who came from nursing, engineering, finance or compliance, stay with reverse-chronological order but use the first career where it explains the practice area: a former nurse reviewing medical records on malpractice claims, or an engineer on patent matters. A career-change resume puts the legal work first under each job. Why you changed fields is a job for your application letter, and our lawyer cover letter examples show how to say it in a few sentences.

Lawyer resume FAQ

Should my resume say lawyer or attorney?

Use the word the job posting uses. In the US both mean a licensed member of the bar, and O*NET lists attorney, counsel and legal counsel as other titles for lawyers. Your title line still carries the employer's own title, such as Associate, Assistant Public Defender or Senior Counsel.

How do I list a judicial clerkship on a lawyer resume?

Give it its own Work Experience entry: Judicial Law Clerk, the judge's chambers or the court, its city and the term dates. Add 2 or 3 bullets with counts, such as bench memos written, opinions drafted and motions or appeals reviewed. Per the BLS, clerkships usually run 1- or 2-year terms, so a short entry raises no questions.

How do public defenders and prosecutors show caseload on a resume?

Give the number of open cases you carried at one time, the mix of misdemeanors and felonies, and the trials you took to verdict each year. Add hearings with counts, such as suppression motions or preliminary hearings. Leave out defendants' names: the case type and the court say enough.

How do I list pro bono work as a lawyer?

Put ongoing pro bono work under Volunteer Experience with the organization, your role and a count, such as 40 hours a year or 12 clients represented in eviction defense. If it ran through your firm's program, a bullet under that job works instead. Pick 1 place for it, not both.

How do I change practice areas on a lawyer resume?

Lead with the overlap. Rewrite your summary for the new area, move the bullets that already touch it to the top of each job, and list skills that carry over, such as contract drafting or regulatory research. A litigator moving to employment law, for example, opens with wage, discrimination or noncompete disputes.

Should I list CLE courses on my lawyer resume?

No, not routine ones. Continuing legal education may be required to keep a license, the BLS notes, so a hiring attorney assumes you have it. List CLE only when it builds toward a credential the employer wants, such as hours toward a specialist certification.

How do I show board certification on a lawyer resume?

Put it under Certificates, right after your bar and court admissions, with the certifying body, the specialty and the year, and add it to your headline. In California, for example, the State Bar certifies specialists in 11 areas of law after 5 years of continuous practice and a written exam.

How should a part-time or contract lawyer list their work?

Group short engagements under 1 entry, such as Contract Lawyer, with its overall dates, then give each project a bullet with the client type, the work and how long it ran. Write Part-Time next to the title of a regular part-time role so a reader understands the dates.

What is the median salary for a lawyer in the US?

$159,670 a year in May 2025, in figures from the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, which also counts legal services firms as the employer of 52% of lawyers. Keep pay off your resume: offers differ widely between firms, government offices and companies, so discuss numbers once the employer raises them.
