Paralegals keep a case moving: the research is done, the documents are right and nothing misses a deadline. Attorneys hiring for the role want your resume to show that, along with your practice area, the legal software you know and how much work you handle at once. Most of your best work goes out under an attorney's signature, though, so what you actually drafted, filed and tracked is easy to undersell.
How to Write a Paralegal Resume - Key Takeaways
- Use the reverse-chronological format on 1 page, or 2 once you have 10+ years or several practice areas.
- Name your practice area in the job title line, such as Paralegal, Estate Planning and Probate, so a reader sees your fit at once.
- Count what you produced: filings, discovery responses, documents reviewed, exhibits, matters on your calendar and the attorneys you supported.
- List the exact systems the job ad names, such as Westlaw, Relativity or Clio, in Skills and again inside a bullet.
- Keep a paralegal certificate under Education and a credential earned by exam, such as CP, CRP or RP, under Certificates.
- Describe matters by type and size instead of client names, then test it with an ATS resume checker before you send it.
What attorneys look for in a paralegal resume
A supervising attorney reads your resume with 3 questions in mind: what kind of law you know, how much work you can carry, and whether your work is ready to file. The BLS lists researching laws and regulations, drafting correspondence and legal documents, and filing briefs and exhibits with the court as core paralegal duties. O*NET adds preparing affidavits, keeping electronic filing systems in order and organizing exhibits for trial.
Each of those tasks has a count behind it, and your resume should give it. Use these sections, with plain headings that hiring software can read:
- Name, a headline with your practice area (for example, Corporate Paralegal) and contact details
- A short summary below your name, 2 to 3 lines long, printed without a heading
- Work Experience, starting with your current job
- Skills, with your legal research, e-discovery and practice management software
- Certificates, for CP, CRP, RP or a notary commission
- Education, with your paralegal certificate or degree
- Optional: Languages, Volunteer Experience or Key Achievements
Best format for a paralegal resume
Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your current job first, each with your title, the firm or employer, the city, and the month and year you began and left (MM/YYYY). Paralegal careers usually grow by practice area and responsibility, from legal assistant to paralegal to senior or lead paralegal, and this order shows that growth clearly. Choose a combination format, with a skills block above your history, only if you are coming into law from an unrelated job.
- Best for most paralegalsReverse-chronologicalYour jobs, newest first, with your results under each one.Best for: A steady work history in your field
- FunctionalSkills grouped up top, with a short work history below.Best for: Gaps or very little experience
- CombinationA skills section first, then your full work history.Best for: A career change with strong skills
Fit your resume on 1 page while you have under 10 years in legal work. A 2-page resume suits a senior paralegal or paralegal manager whose work spans several practice areas, trials or deal teams, as long as page 1 holds your 2 latest jobs. Law firms expect a conservative layout, so keep the design plain and the text easy to scan.
| Setting | What to use |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 page, or 2 with 10+ years or several practice areas |
| Dates | MM/YYYY for each job, with Present for your current role |
| Job title line | Title plus practice area: Paralegal, Employment Litigation |
| Practice areas | Name them in your headline or summary, and show each one in a bullet |
| Layout | One clean typeface, clear headings and no graphics a law firm portal could misread |
| Photo and personal details | No photo for most US and Canadian employers; skip your date of birth, marital status and Social Security number |
| File type | PDF, unless the firm's application system asks for Word |
Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo, and a law firm reads first for practice area and accuracy. Proofread every name, date and citation twice: attorneys treat a typo on a paralegal resume as a preview of your filings.
Paralegal resume summary vs. objective
If you already work as a paralegal, write a resume summary: your practice area, years, type of employer, best result and main software. If you are a new graduate or moving over from another role, a resume objective works better: the paralegal role you want and the strongest legal work you have done so far. The test is simple: if you have a paralegal job title to point to, write a summary.
Paralegal resume summary formula
Practice area paralegal with X years at type of employer. Your strongest result, with a number: filings, matters, documents or deadlines. Software you work in and certificate or credential.
Example
Estate planning paralegal with nearly 3 years at a 12-attorney Sacramento firm, after 6 years as a legal assistant. Cut open trust-funding items per client from 7 to 2 with a new checklist. Works in Clio and Westlaw, with a Paralegal Studies Certificate from an ABA-approved program.
Don't
Detail-oriented paralegal with excellent research and organizational skills seeking to support a dynamic legal team.
Do
Insurance defense paralegal with 4 years at a 30-attorney firm, managing discovery on about 45 open files. Drafts written discovery, deposition summaries and subpoenas in Relativity and Westlaw. NALA Certified Paralegal since 2024.
This version names the practice area, the firm size, the caseload, the systems and the credential.
How to write paralegal work experience bullets with numbers
Give your current job 3 to 4 bullets and older jobs 2 to 4, each opening with a verb such as drafted, filed, coded or prepared. Follow the general rules for listing work experience on a resume, then add the counts a law office keeps anyway: filings, pages, documents, deadlines, exhibits and matters. Swap duties for achievements on your resume wherever a result exists, such as a filing accepted without corrections or a production served on time.
| Area | What to count | Example bullet |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery and e-discovery | Documents reviewed, productions, privilege log entries | Coded 18,000 documents in Relativity and logged 640 privileged entries for a contract dispute. |
| Court filings | Filings per month, courts, filings returned | E-filed about 40 pleadings a month in CM/ECF across 3 federal districts. |
| Trial preparation | Exhibits, witness binders, trial days | Prepared 212 trial exhibits and 9 witness binders for a 6-day jury trial. |
| Docketing and calendar | Open matters, attorneys supported, deadlines met | Kept court and filing deadlines for 95 open matters for 4 attorneys. |
| Corporate and transactional | Entities, annual reports, closing sets | Kept annual reports current for 120 entities registered in 14 states. |
| Research and cite checking | Briefs, memos, citations checked | Cite-checked 11 appellate briefs in Westlaw before filing. |
| Client intake | New clients, interviews, files opened | Interviewed 30 new clients a month and opened each matter the same day. |
Here is how those counts look in one paralegal's history. The current job names the practice area in the title, every bullet carries a volume, and the older legal assistant role is shorter.
Work Experience
- Draft revocable trusts, pour-over wills and powers of attorney for 2 attorneys, about 9 client plans a month.
- Prepared and filed 31 probate petitions in 2025, with 0 returned by the court for defects.
- Track hearing dates and notice deadlines for 45 open estates across 3 court calendars.
- Calendared deadlines on 140 active matters for 3 attorneys, with 0 missed court dates in 6 years.
- Assembled 25 trial binders, from exhibit lists to witness tabs.
Don't
Responsible for discovery.
Do
Drafted responses to 120 interrogatories and 85 requests for production across 9 cases, each served by its deadline.
The second version says which discovery, how much and that it met the deadline.
Don't
Assisted attorneys at trial.
Do
Ran exhibits on screen during a 4-day bench trial and turned 2 days of testimony into page-line summaries overnight.
Paralegal skills and legal software for your resume
Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that the job ad asks for and your bullets already prove. Legal research, drafting and docketing belong on almost every paralegal resume; e-discovery, entity management, immigration forms or probate only where you have done that work.
Hard skills for paralegals
- Legal research and cite checking
- Drafting pleadings and motions
- Discovery requests and responses
- E-discovery and document review
- Docketing and deadline tracking
- Court e-filing
- Trial and exhibit preparation
- Deposition summaries
- Contract and entity management
- Client intake interviews
Soft skills attorneys value in paralegals
- Accuracy under deadline
- Discretion with confidential files
- Clear writing
- Juggling several attorneys' requests
- Calm with clients
- Follow-through
List your software with your skills, then name each system again in the bullet that shows what you did with it. O*NET flags Thomson Reuters Westlaw as in-demand technology for paralegals and legal assistants, along with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and lists LexisNexis and Adobe Acrobat among the tools of the job. Add the exact names of the e-discovery, practice management and court systems in the posting, such as Relativity, Clio, iManage or PACER, but only the ones you have worked in.
CP, CRP and RP: how to list paralegal certifications
Certification is optional for paralegals, but the BLS notes that some employers prefer or require it, and that it typically takes passing an exam. List certifications on your resume in the Certificates section with the issuing body and the date, so an attorney scanning for a credential finds it in one place. The 2 bodies behind these credentials are NALA, The Paralegal Association, and the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA).
| Credential | Issued by | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| CP (Certified Paralegal) | NALA, The Paralegal Association | Meet 1 of 3 eligibility routes (a qualifying paralegal program; a bachelor's degree plus 1 year as a paralegal or 15 semester hours of paralegal courses; or high school or its equivalent plus 5 years as a paralegal and 20 hours of CLE), then pass the Knowledge Exam and the Skills Exam. Renew every 5 years with 50 hours of CLE, 5 of them in legal ethics. |
| CRP (CORE Registered Paralegal) | NFPA | Pass the Paralegal CORE Competency Exam (PCCE), which NFPA built for early-career and entry-level paralegals. |
| RP (Registered Paralegal) | NFPA | Pass the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE), meant for paralegals with an education in paralegal studies and years of practical experience. |
Paralegal certificate vs. Certified Paralegal
A certificate in paralegal studies is a school credential, so it goes under Education. A Certified Paralegal (CP), CRP or RP comes from passing a national exam, so it goes under Certificates and may follow your name. Never write "certified paralegal" on the strength of a school certificate. If you are partway through the CP, list the exam you have passed with its date and the one you have scheduled, and keep CP off your headline until both are behind you.
Certificates
- Certified Paralegal (CP) Knowledge Exam, NALA, The Paralegal Association, passed 06/2026
- Certified Paralegal (CP) Skills Exam, NALA, The Paralegal Association, scheduled 10/2026
How to list a paralegal certificate, associate's or bachelor's degree
The BLS says paralegals typically need an associate's degree or a certificate in paralegal studies, and some employers prefer a bachelor's degree. Follow the usual rules for listing education on a resume: credential, school, city and completion date. If your program is approved by the American Bar Association, say so on the line, because some job ads ask for it.
California sets its own rule in Business and Professions Code section 6450: anyone called a paralegal there needs a qualifying background, such as a certificate from an ABA-approved program, a program with at least 24 semester units of law-related courses, or a bachelor's degree plus 1 year of law-related work under a supervising attorney. California paralegals also certify 4 hours of legal ethics and 4 hours of general or specialized law CLE every 2 years. If you work there, name the qualifying program in full so the reader can check it.
Education
ABA-approved program. Coursework included Estate Planning and Probate Procedure.
Entry-level and career-change paralegal resumes
With no paralegal title yet, follow an entry-level resume layout: a short objective, Education near the top with your program and its legal coursework, then any work that shows you can handle legal documents. Give each item the counts a paralegal job would get.
- Paralegal internships or practicums: the practice area, hours, documents drafted and files indexed.
- Legal assistant or legal secretary work: attorneys supported, matters calendared and filings prepared.
- Court, title or records jobs: filings processed, searches run or records requests handled.
- Legal aid or clinic volunteering: clients interviewed and forms prepared, listed under Volunteer Experience.
Don't
Recent paralegal certificate graduate looking for an opportunity to grow my legal career.
Do
Paralegal Studies graduate with a 120-hour internship at a family law firm, seeking a junior paralegal role. Drafted 14 financial disclosure forms and indexed 3 custody case files under attorney review.
An objective still needs proof: the practice area, the hours and what you produced.
Moving up from legal assistant or legal secretary is a common route in, and a career-change resume for it keeps reverse-chronological order and leads each job with its most paralegal-like tasks: drafting, research, discovery and filings. Coming from another field, such as insurance claims, HR or banking, lead with the documents, deadlines and records you already manage. Explain the switch in a cover letter of 3 to 4 paragraphs, and keep the resume itself on the legal work.
Paralegal resume FAQ
Can I write "certified paralegal" on my resume if I have a paralegal certificate?
No. A certificate in paralegal studies is an education credential, so list it under Education with the school and date. Certified Paralegal (CP) is a credential from NALA, The Paralegal Association, earned by passing its Knowledge and Skills Exams, and only then does it belong after your name.
How long should a paralegal resume be?
One page for most paralegals with under 10 years of legal work. A senior paralegal with several practice areas, trials or deal teams can use 2 pages, as long as the first page carries the 2 most recent jobs and the practice areas a hiring attorney is looking for.
What legal software should I put on a paralegal resume?
Put the systems the posting names that you can use on day 1, written exactly as the ad writes them: research tools such as Westlaw or LexisNexis, e-discovery platforms such as Relativity, and practice management software such as Clio. Back each one with proof in a bullet: what you did in it, and how much.
Do you need a certification to work as a paralegal?
Not in most jobs. The BLS says certification is not required, though some employers prefer or require it, and it typically takes passing an exam. If a posting lists a CP, CRP or RP, put your credential or your exam date under Certificates.
How do I show several practice areas on one paralegal resume?
Name your main practice area in your headline and give the others a line in your summary. Then let each job's title line and bullets show the work in that area, such as discovery counts for litigation or entity filings for corporate work, so every practice area you claim has proof.
Should I name cases or clients on my paralegal resume?
Usually not. Describe each matter by its type, size and your role, such as a 6-week construction defect trial or 300 residential closings a year. Name a case only when it is a matter of public record and your supervising attorney is comfortable with you citing it.
How do I move from legal assistant to paralegal on my resume?
Lead each legal assistant job with the substantive work you did, such as drafting, discovery, research or court filings, and put scheduling and filing duties after it. Add your paralegal certificate or degree under Education and write an objective naming the paralegal role and practice area you want.
Do paralegals need a bachelor's degree?
Not always. The BLS says paralegals typically need an associate's degree or a certificate in paralegal studies, while some employers prefer a bachelor's degree. If you have a bachelor's in another field, list it with your paralegal certificate, since that pairing is a common route into the job.
How much do paralegals earn?
The BLS puts the median annual pay for paralegals and legal assistants at $62,890 in May 2025. Your offer depends on your city, the practice area and the size of the firm.
