5 Help Desk Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

IT managers hiring for a help desk check your support tier, how many users you served, how fast your tickets closed and which tools you worked in. The examples and the advice below show where each of those goes, from a first Tier 1 job to escalation work.

Help Desk resume example

Help desk work is counted ticket by ticket, so a support lead can learn a lot about you from a few figures. Those figures show how many people you supported, which channels and systems you worked in, how often you fixed a problem on the first contact, and when you escalated one. Tickets a day, first-contact fixes and the satisfaction scores your users gave are worth more on a resume than any description of the job.

How to Write a Help Desk Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Put your newest job first (reverse-chronological) on 1 page, and move to 2 only after 10+ years or once you lead a team.
  • Put your tier, where your desk uses one, in the job title line and your user count in the first bullet of each help desk job.
  • Take bullet figures from your ticketing system: tickets a day or week, first-contact resolution, SLA results, survey scores and knowledge base articles.
  • List the tools the posting names, such as ServiceNow and Active Directory, under Skills and prove each one in a bullet.
  • Add CompTIA A+ only once both of its exams are passed, and show Network+, ITIL 4 Foundation or a Microsoft certification with issuer and month.
  • Test the finished file with an ATS resume checker, because IT departments often screen applicants for tool and certification keywords.

What IT managers look for in a help desk resume

The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes computer user support specialists, also called help-desk technicians, as the people who give technical help to computer users outside IT. It lists diagnosing a user's problem, documenting it, guiding the user through the fix, and installing new hardware or software and training people on it, with requests arriving in person, by phone, by online chat or by email. O*NET adds keeping records of problems and the actions taken, and referring major hardware or software faults to vendors or technicians.

A support lead turns those duties into 3 questions: which tier you worked and for how many users, which channels and systems you handled, and what your queue numbers looked like. Build the page around these sections so each answer is easy to find:

  • Name, a headline with your title and strongest certification (for example, Help Desk Analyst, CompTIA A+) and contact details
  • A summary or objective of 2 to 3 lines as the opening text, which carries no heading
  • Work Experience, starting with your current job, with the tier in each title where your desk uses tiers
  • Skills, with your ticketing system, directory and device tools listed there
  • Certificates
  • Education
  • Key Achievements, Volunteer Experience or Languages when you have room

Best format for a help desk resume

Choose the reverse-chronological resume format: current job on top, each entry with the title (and tier, if any), the employer, its location and the start and end months as MM/YYYY. A help desk career is read as a climb through the queue, from answering the phones to owning escalations, and newest-first order puts that climb in plain view. If you were promoted from Tier 1 to Tier 2 at the same employer, show 2 titles with their own dates under that employer.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a help desk resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Hold to 1 page while you are in front-line support. A second page earns its place once you have 10+ years, a team lead role or a long run of migrations and rollouts, provided your current job and certifications fit on page 1. Jobs from before your IT career shrink to a title, an employer and dates.

Help Desk resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page for most help desk jobs; 2 after 10+ years or in a lead role
Job title lineYour employer's title, plus your tier if the desk uses tiers: Help Desk Technician, Tier 1
DatesMM/YYYY for jobs and certificates, and Present for the job you hold
Shift coverageNight, weekend or on-call support in a bullet, when the posting lists those hours
Photo and private dataNo photo for most US and Canadian employers, and no age, marital status or SSN
File typePDF, or .docx if the careers portal requests it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Show the hours you covered instead: the BLS notes that support services may need to run 24 hours a day, so some specialists work nights or weekends, and a posting for those shifts looks for proof you have worked them.

Help desk resume summary vs. objective

Apply one test: if you have been paid to support users, at any tier, open with a resume summary that gives your tier, your user base, your tools and 1 queue result. If your experience comes from courses, a home lab or another field, open with a resume objective that names the help desk role you want and your best evidence. Draft it last, borrowing the strongest figure from your bullets.

Help desk resume summary formula

Tier help desk title for user base, handling channels in ticketing system. Strongest queue figure: first-contact resolution, SLA or survey score. Certifications, or the exam you are sitting next.

Example

Tier 2 help desk analyst for a 640-employee credit union with 14 branches, handling escalated phone and email tickets in ServiceNow. Closed 92% of escalations within SLA in 2025. CompTIA A+ and Network+ certified, with ITIL 4 Foundation scheduled for 01/2027.

Don't

Detail-oriented IT professional with excellent customer service skills and a passion for solving technical problems.

Do

Help desk technician with 3 years of Tier 1 phone and walk-up support for 520 staff and students at a private college. Holds a 96% positive survey rate and wrote 35 knowledge base articles the team still uses.

The rewrite gives the tier, the users, the channels and 2 results a support lead can check.

How to write help desk work experience bullets with numbers

Your current job takes 3 to 4 bullets and each older one 1 to 3, all opening with an action verb. Make the first bullet set the scale: the users you support, the channels and your usual daily or weekly volume. The rest should come from reports your queue already produces, such as first-contact resolution, SLA results, survey scores, reopened tickets and knowledge base articles. When you list work experience on a resume, keep each figure tied to its base, so 74% reads as 74% of a named queue.

Numbers that prove help desk work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
VolumeContacts a day or week, channels, users supportedHandled about 55 phone and chat contacts a day for 1,900 users at a 3-campus college.
First-contact resolutionShare of tickets solved without escalationRaised first-contact resolution on the Tier 1 queue from 61% to 74% by adding 20 scripted fixes to the call guide.
SLA and response timeTickets inside the SLA, by priorityAnswered 95% of priority 2 tickets within the 4-hour SLA for 3 straight quarters.
User satisfactionPost-ticket survey scores and response countsKept a 94% positive rating across 2,300 post-ticket survey responses in 2025.
Knowledge baseArticles written, repeat tickets avoidedWrote 42 knowledge base articles that cut repeat VPN tickets from 90 to 35 a month.
Onboarding and devicesNew hires set up, laptops imaged, turnaroundSet up accounts, mailboxes and laptops for 26 new hires a month with a 2-day turnaround.

Here is how those figures look for an analyst who moved from Tier 1 to Tier 2. The scale comes first in each job, then the results, and the earlier job keeps a single line.

Sample entry: Tier 2 help desk analyst at a credit union

Work Experience

Help Desk Analyst, Tier 204/2022 – Present
Pellowtide Credit Union | Reno, NV
  • Work escalated tickets from a 3-person Tier 1 team for 640 employees at 14 branches, about 70 tickets a week in ServiceNow.
  • Brought escalations closed within SLA from 81% in 2023 to 92% in 2025 by triaging the queue at the start of every shift.
  • Rebuilt the branch teller PC image, cutting the setup of a replacement workstation from 5 hours to 90 minutes.
  • Manage Active Directory accounts and group permissions for joiners, movers and leavers, about 30 changes a month.
Help Desk Technician, Tier 106/2019 – 03/2022
Marrowfen Freight | Sparks, NV
  • Answered about 40 calls and emails a day from 280 office and warehouse users, solving 76% on the first contact.

Don't

Answered user calls and resolved IT issues.

Do

Took about 45 calls a day on the Tier 1 line and solved 3 in 4 without escalation, mostly Outlook, VPN and printer faults.

The second line gives the volume, the resolution rate and the problems behind it.

Don't

Responsible for password resets and account management.

Do

Moved password resets for 1,200 users to a self-service portal with MFA enrollment, freeing about 15 hours of Tier 1 time a week.

Help desk skills and ticketing software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 computer skills for your resume that the job ad requests and your bullets already show. Troubleshooting, account administration and device setup belong on nearly every help desk resume; mobile device management, scripting or network diagnostics only where you have done them for real users.

Hard skills for help desk roles

  • Ticket triage and prioritization
  • Remote desktop support
  • Windows 11 troubleshooting
  • macOS and iOS support
  • Active Directory account management
  • Password resets and MFA enrollment
  • Microsoft 365 and Outlook support
  • Laptop imaging and deployment
  • Printer and peripheral repair
  • DNS, DHCP and VPN troubleshooting
  • Knowledge base writing

Soft skills support leads value

  • Patience with frustrated users
  • Plain-language explanations
  • Clear ticket notes
  • Knowing when to escalate
  • Calm during outages
  • Following up on open tickets

Write your tools into Skills and back each one with a bullet. For computer user support specialists, O*NET marks ServiceNow, Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Excel and Apple iOS as in-demand hot technologies. Product names change, so match them to the dates of each job: Microsoft renamed Azure AD to Microsoft Entra ID in July 2023, while on-premises Active Directory kept its name, and Atlassian launched Jira Service Management as the next generation of Jira Service Desk in 11/2020. For a job that ended before the rename, use the old name; on a current job, write Microsoft Entra ID, adding (Azure AD) if the posting still uses it.

CompTIA A+, Network+ and ITIL 4: help desk certifications on a resume

Certifications carry unusual weight on a help desk resume. The BLS notes that the programs come from vendors or from vendor-neutral providers, and that candidates with only high school behind them can qualify by holding relevant IT certifications. CompTIA says its A+ appears in more tech support job listings than any other IT credential. Add certifications to your resume in a Certificates section, newest or most relevant first, each with its issuer and the month you earned it.

Help desk certifications and what each one requires
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
CompTIA A+CompTIACore 1 (exam 220-1201 in the version launched 03/2025) and Core 2, in either order; CompTIA recommends 12 months of hands-on IT support work.
CompTIA Network+CompTIAExam N10-009, launched 06/2024; CompTIA suggests holding A+ and having 9 to 12 months of hands-on experience before you sit it.
ITIL 4 FoundationPeopleCertA closed-book exam of 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, passed at 65%, with no listed prerequisite.
Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator AssociateMicrosoftExam MD-102 on managing devices with Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Entra ID; renewed every 12 months through a free online assessment.
Google IT Support CertificateGoogle, on CourseraA course certificate open to beginners that Google says takes 3 to 6 months; adding CompTIA A+ earns a dual credential from both.

How to list CompTIA A+ when you have passed 1 of its 2 exams

CompTIA A+ is awarded only after both Core 1 and Core 2, so a single passed exam is not the certification. List the exam you passed with its month and the other as scheduled, such as CompTIA A+ Core 1, passed 08/2026, with Core 2 scheduled for 11/2026, and keep A+ out of your headline until both are done. CompTIA certifications renew on a 3-year cycle, so list the month you earned one and keep a lapsed one off.

Certificates

  • CompTIA Network+, CompTIA, 05/2025
  • CompTIA A+, CompTIA, 08/2024
  • ITIL 4 Foundation, PeopleCert, scheduled 01/2027

How to list an IT degree or certificate on a help desk resume

Help desk hiring is open to several kinds of training. BLS data says user support specialists typically need some college courses and network support specialists typically need an associate's degree, while finishing high school and adding relevant IT certifications can be enough. So an associate degree, a college certificate program or an unfinished degree all count.

Follow the basics of listing education on a resume: the degree or program, the school, its city and the month you finished, or the expected month if you are still enrolled. Copy the program name exactly as the school prints it, such as Computer Information Technology, rather than shortening it to IT. In your first 2 years of work, 1 line of relevant coursework fits under the degree; later, keep it only if it shows a skill your jobs do not.

Entry-level and career-change help desk resumes

A short work history is normal for a first help desk job. Open with an objective, put your certifications or exam dates near the top, and count every place you have already fixed or set up technology for other people. The entry-level resume page shows layouts for other first jobs. These count as evidence:

  • Campus IT or library tech desk: users helped a shift and the common fixes, as a full Work Experience entry.
  • Phone, computer or electronics store counter: devices repaired or set up a week, under Work Experience.
  • Home lab: a domain controller, a ticketing trial or a small network you built, listed in Key Achievements.
  • Tech help for a nonprofit, church or school: computers set up and people trained, under Volunteer Experience.
  • Google IT Support Certificate or a college program: under Certificates or Education with its finish date.

Don't

Hardworking and tech-savvy individual seeking an entry-level help desk position where I can learn and grow.

Do

Seeking a Tier 1 help desk role after passing CompTIA A+ Core 1 in 09/2026, with Core 2 scheduled for 12/2026. Spent 2 years at a phone repair counter diagnosing and fixing about 25 devices a week.

An objective without IT jobs still names the role, the exam dates and the hands-on work.

Coming from a call center, retail or customer service, stay with newest-first order and rewrite the old bullets around what transfers: calls a day, issues solved on the first call, angry customers calmed, a point-of-sale or CRM system you trained others on. Place your new certification first under Certificates, and see the career-change resume page for layouts. Use 2 or 3 sentences of your cover letter to explain the move; the IT cover letter examples show how to open with your strongest support result.

Help Desk resume FAQ

What should I put on a help desk resume with no IT experience?

Put an objective naming the help desk role, your certifications or exam dates, and any work where you fixed devices or helped people with technology: a campus tech desk, a phone repair counter, a home lab or volunteer setup work. Customer service jobs belong too, with call volumes and issues solved.

Do I need CompTIA A+ to get a help desk job?

Not always, but it helps a great deal at entry level. The BLS notes that some candidates qualify on IT certifications with no college, and CompTIA says A+ appears in more tech support job listings than any other IT credential. List it only after passing both Core 1 and Core 2.

How do I show Tier 1 and Tier 2 experience on a resume?

Add the tier to each job title where your desk uses tiers, such as Help Desk Analyst, Tier 2, and give each tier its own dates if you were promoted at the same employer. Tier 1 bullets show volume and first-contact resolution; Tier 2 bullets show escalations closed, SLA results and fixes that stopped repeat tickets.

Which numbers should a help desk resume include?

Use the figures your queue reports: users supported, tickets or calls a day or week, first-contact resolution, the share of tickets inside the SLA, survey scores and knowledge base articles written. Pick 1 or 2 per bullet and always give the base, such as the queue, the user count or the period.

Should I list every application I have supported?

No. List 6 to 8 skills plus the tools that match the posting and that a bullet on your resume proves, starting with the ticketing system, the directory service and the operating systems. A long list of every app you have touched makes the ones the employer runs harder to spot.

How long should a help desk resume be?

1 page for Tier 1 and Tier 2 roles and most people with under 10 years in IT. A second page fits a team lead or someone with a long record of rollouts and migrations, as long as the current job and certifications sit on page 1.

Is it Azure AD or Microsoft Entra ID on a help desk resume?

Match the name to the job's dates. Microsoft announced the rename of Azure AD to Microsoft Entra ID in July 2023, so a job that ended before then says Azure AD, and a current job says Microsoft Entra ID. On-premises Active Directory kept its name.

What is the average help desk salary?

Computer user support specialists, the BLS occupation that includes help desk technicians, had a median annual pay of $61,860 in May 2025, according to BLS wage data. Pay varies with tier, industry, shift and certifications; leave salary off your resume and raise it once an offer is on the table.
