11 Government Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

City, county and state hiring panels read a government resume against the posting's minimum qualifications, then score it for programs, caseloads and public dollars. Use these examples and the guide below to match the class specification, prove each duty with a number and handle exams and application forms.

Government resume example

Public hiring follows written rules. Before anyone calls you, a screener checks your resume against the posting's minimum qualifications, line by line. A panel then looks for the programs you ran, the people you served and the public money you handled. Public-sector titles sound alike on paper, though, so each job you list has to show which caseload, permit counter, budget or bill was actually yours.

How to Write a Government Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Order your jobs newest first on 1 to 2 pages, giving each one your working title and MM/YYYY dates.
  • Write the posting's minimum qualifications and duties into your bullets in its own words, wherever they are true for you.
  • Give every bullet a public-sector number: active cases, permits issued, budget dollars, bills tracked, records requests or residents served.
  • Open with a 2- to 3-line summary that names your level of government, your program area and your best result.
  • Treat the resume and any state application form as one record, with the same titles, employers and dates on both.
  • Leave off a photo, your birthday and your SSN, then run the file through an ATS resume checker before you upload it to a government job portal.

What hiring panels look for in a government resume

Most government jobs are not federal. In September 2026 the BLS counted about 15.2 million local government jobs and 5.5 million state government jobs, against 2.7 million federal ones. A city, county or state resume is usually read twice: an HR analyst checks it against the minimum qualifications in the job's class specification, then a hiring panel compares the candidates who pass.

Both readers want the same proof: the program you worked in, the volume you carried and what changed, written so each line maps to the posting. Build the resume from these sections:

  • Your name, contact details and a headline carrying your working title (for example, Management Analyst, County Budget Office)
  • A 2- to 3-line profile under your name, printed without a heading
  • Work Experience, newest job first, each with the employer, its location and the months you began and left
  • Skills, including the systems the posting names
  • Certificates, with any required license first
  • Education
  • Optional: Languages, Volunteer Experience or Key Achievements

Best format for a government resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format, current job first. Screeners count months of qualifying experience, and dated entries in order let them do it in 1 pass. A skills-first layout without dates can read as missing experience to someone checking minimum qualifications, so keep every job dated even when you are moving in from another field.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a government resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep it to 1 page with under 10 years of experience and 2 pages after that, with your 2 most recent public-sector roles on page 1. Federal jobs on USAJOBS follow their own rules on length and job details, which the federal resume page sets out.

Government resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page under 10 years; 2 pages for a longer public-sector career
DatesMM/YYYY for the month each job began and ended, and Present for the one you hold now
Job title lineYour working title, plus the classification title in parentheses when it differs: Budget Analyst (Management Analyst II)
Part-time workPart-Time, Seasonal or a similar label after the job title; the hours per week go on the application form when it asks for them
Type and marginsCalibri, Arial or a similar standard font at 10.5 to 12 pt, with 0.5- to 1-inch margins
Photo and private dataPhoto usually left off in the US and Canada; no birthday, marital status or SSN anywhere on the page
File typePDF, unless the job portal lists Word as the only upload type

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo, and a public employer rates applicants on written qualifications, so give that space to 1 more bullet that proves a duty from the posting.

Government resume summary vs. objective

Use a single test. If you have done the posting's kind of work, in government or outside it, write a resume summary of 2 to 3 lines with your title, your level of government, your program area and 1 result. If you have not, write an objective that names the classification you want and your closest evidence. Write either one after your bullets, so its number comes from them.

Government resume summary formula

Title with X years in city, county or state program area. Best result you can count, and what it was counted against. Degree, credential or system named in the posting.

Example

Management analyst with 7 years in county budgeting and housing programs. Ran a review of 23 permit and inspection fees whose new schedule recovers $410K a year in staff costs. MPA, with budget models in Excel and Power BI.

Don't

Dedicated public servant with a passion for helping the community and a strong work ethic, seeking a position with the county.

Do

Eligibility worker with 5 years in a state SNAP and Medicaid office, carrying about 160 active cases. Kept a 2.1% error rate in quality control reviews and trained 4 new hires on the state eligibility system.

The second version names the program, the caseload and the measure a supervisor already tracks.

How to write government work experience bullets with numbers

The job you hold now gets 3 to 4 bullets, and each earlier one gets 2 to 4. Public offices count their work constantly, in cases, permits, hearings, dollars and response days, so take your numbers from the reports your office already files. Start each bullet with a verb, end on a result, and write achievements on your resume rather than a copy of your duty statement.

Numbers that prove government work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Casework and eligibilityActive cases, renewals on time, error rateCarried 140 active cases and completed 98% of renewals before their due date.
Permits and inspectionsPermits issued, days from intake to issue, resubmittalsIssued 1,650 permits a year and cut intake-to-issue time from 9 to 4 business days.
Budgets and grantsDollars managed, reporting cycles, audit findingsManaged a $2.3M state grant through 3 reporting cycles with 0 audit findings.
Legislation and policyBills tracked, amendments drafted, hearings staffedTracked 27 bills for a committee member and drafted amendments to 5, 2 of which were signed into law.
Constituent servicesCalls and emails handled, response time, cases closedAnswered 1,100 constituent calls and emails a year within 3 business days.
Procurement and recordsBids run, savings against estimate, records requests closedRan 42 vendor bids and came in $180K under the department's cost estimates.

Here is one county analyst's entry written that way. The current job carries the budget and fee numbers, and the older one keeps 2 lines.

Government skills and software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting's minimum and desirable qualifications, and back each with a bullet. Public-sector postings repeat their own vocabulary, such as public records, policy analysis or code compliance, so a Skills section built from the posting's resume keywords reads as a direct match to the screener.

Hard skills for government jobs

  • Policy analysis
  • Budget preparation and monitoring
  • Grant administration
  • Eligibility determination
  • Permit intake and review
  • Public records requests
  • Legislative research and bill tracking
  • Procurement rules
  • Program evaluation
  • Staff reports for elected officials

Soft skills public-sector panels value

  • Plain-language writing
  • Impartial judgment
  • Confidentiality
  • Speaking at public meetings
  • Patience at the counter and on the phone
  • Following procedure under deadline

Put each system in Skills and prove it with a bullet that shows what you did in it. Write the exact product the posting names: Microsoft Excel and Power BI for budgets and reports, ArcGIS for mapping, Accela or another permitting system at a permit counter, Legistar for council agendas, or a state's eligibility system by its own name. If a system exists inside only one agency, add a 3- or 4-word description a new employer understands, such as state benefits case system.

Government job applications, civil service exams and veterans' preference

Many state and local jobs are filled through a merit system, and the resume is only one part of the file. In New York State, for example, the Department of Civil Service ranks candidates on an eligible list by their final exam score, including any veterans' credits, and agencies appoint from the top 3 who will take the job. A list usually lasts 1 to 4 years, and a small share of state jobs need no competitive exam at all.

Other states put a form first. A California state posting with an October 2026 filing date requires the STD 678 application and a Statement of Qualifications, calls the resume optional, and states that a resume does not take the place of the STD 678. Read each posting's application steps before you upload anything.

How to match your resume to the state application

Fill in the application from your resume, not the other way around: the same job titles, employers and MM/YYYY dates on both, and any gap explained in the same words. Where a form asks for duties, paste your strongest bullets rather than a shorter version, since a screener may rate the form on its own.

Veterans' preference is usually claimed on the application or exam form, with the proof the agency asks for. On the resume, list your service as a dated Work Experience entry with your branch and final rank, translate each duty into civilian terms, and use the best jobs for veterans as a map of where military skills carry over. The military-to-civilian resume page shows that translation in full.

Certifications for government jobs and how to list them

Add certifications to your resume under Certificates with the issuing body and the month earned, and put any license the posting requires first, such as a CPA, a professional engineer license or a commercial driver's license. Most government roles need no single credential, so list the ones that fit the classification: a permit counter, a management track and a city manager's office each have their own.

Government certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Certified Public Manager (CPM)A state CPM program accredited by the National Certified Public Manager Consortium300 hours of study in the accredited program, which may be exam based, project based or both.
ICMA Credentialed Manager (ICMA-CM)ICMAExecutive service in local government: 7 years with an MPA or MPP, 8 with another graduate degree or 9 with a bachelor's, then 40 hours of professional development a year.
Permit Technician (exam 14)International Code Council (ICC)Pass ICC exam 14 on permit issuance and code administration, offered on the 2021 and 2024 code editions.

Write a credential in progress with its expected completion date, never as earned; on an ICC certification you can add the code edition you tested on.

Sample Certificates section: permit counter to management track

Certificates

  • Permit Technician (14), International Code Council, 2024 code edition, 04/2025
  • Certified Public Manager (CPM), state CPM program, 300 hours, in progress; completion expected 06/2027

How to list education for a government job

Minimum qualifications often let education stand in for some of the required experience, or the reverse, so the degree line needs the exact degree name and date. When listing education on a resume, name the degree as awarded, then the school with its city and state, and the month and year you finished; add a GPA only if it is 3.5 or higher and you finished in the last 2 to 3 years.

A Master of Public Administration (MPA) or Master of Public Policy (MPP) is the usual graduate route into analyst and management roles, and ICMA asks for fewer years of service from managers who hold one. Add a capstone or relevant coursework only while you are new to the field.

Sample education entry: MPA

Education

Master of Public Administration (MPA)06/2019
The Evergreen State College | Olympia, WA

Capstone: a cost study of county permit fees.

Entry-level and career-change government resumes

With no government job yet, use an entry-level resume layout: a short objective, Education near the top, then any work that shows public service. Count it the way an agency would.

  • Legislative or city council internships: bills researched, constituent letters drafted, hearings attended.
  • Work-study in a public office: forms processed or visitors helped per week, records filed.
  • Volunteer boards and commissions: meetings staffed and reports written, listed under Volunteer Experience.
  • Service programs such as AmeriCorps: the program, the city, hours served and residents reached.

Don't

Recent political science graduate looking for an opportunity to serve my community in government.

Do

Political science graduate with a 12-week state legislative internship, applying for a legislative aide role. Researched 19 bills for committee hearings and drafted 400 constituent letters.

Even a new graduate's objective can carry a count and a named program.

Coming from the private sector, stay with newest-first order and move the duties that match the class specification to the top of each job, such as budgets, compliance, customer intake or contracts. A career-change resume works for a public job as long as every entry stays dated. Explain the move in 2 or 3 sentences when writing a cover letter, with the posting's classification title in your first line.

Government resume FAQ

How is a government resume different from a private-sector resume?

It is read against written rules. A screener checks it against the posting's minimum qualifications before a panel sees it, so titles, dates and duties must be easy to match. Use the posting's own terms, date every job with MM/YYYY and give each bullet a number the agency would recognize.

Do I still need a resume if the state application asks for my work history?

Yes, if the posting accepts one. Some forms carry the weight: a California state posting from October 2026 requires the STD 678 and a Statement of Qualifications and calls the resume optional. Complete every field of the form, then attach a resume with the same titles and dates for the interview panel.

How long should a state or local government resume be?

Use 1 page with under 10 years of experience and 2 pages after that. Fill the space with qualifying experience, since the screener is counting it, and cut jobs older than 15 years unless one of them meets a minimum qualification on its own.

Should I put my civil service exam score on my resume?

No. The agency already holds your score and your rank on the eligible list. If you are on an active list for the job, name the exam title and year in the cover letter or in the application question that asks for it, and keep the resume for experience.

Should I list veterans' preference on a government resume?

No. Claim it on the application or exam form, with the proof the agency asks for. In New York State, for example, veterans' credits are part of the final score that sets your rank on the eligible list. On the resume, list your service as a dated job described in civilian terms.

How do I show part-time, seasonal or temporary government work?

Give it its own Work Experience entry with MM/YYYY dates and mark it Part-Time or Seasonal after the job title. Put the hours per week, such as 20 hours a week, on the application form when it asks: a screener counting qualifying experience may credit part-time months at a lower rate, so the hours stop them from guessing.

Can I use my federal resume for a state or city job?

Not without editing it. A federal resume carries series, grades and other USAJOBS details a state or city screener does not use. Keep the dated jobs and the strongest bullets, swap federal terms for the new posting's terms, and drop anything that proves no minimum or desirable qualification.

Should I include my current salary on a government resume?

No. Keep the resume on duties and results. If an application form asks for pay on each past job and your state allows the question, answer it there, and read the pay range in the posting before you apply.
