5 Federal Government Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

A federal HR specialist checks your resume against the announcement and the qualification standard for its occupational series before a manager reads it. Use these examples and the guide below to show your series, grade, hours and the degree or credential your series requires.

Federal Government resume example

A federal government job is still a job in your own field: engineering, contracting, human resources, telecommunications or logistics. What changes is who decides first. An HR specialist compares your resume with the announcement and with the government's written rules for that occupation, and only then does an engineer or a contracting officer see it. A strong career can be screened out over a missing grade, vague dates or a degree that does not match the series. Your resume has to prove the same work twice: once against the rulebook, once to the manager who will rely on you.

How to Write a Federal Government Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Find the occupational series on the announcement first, because it decides which OPM qualification standard your resume is checked against.
  • Write each federal job title line as title, series, grade and hours per week, and give each grade its own entry when you were promoted inside one office.
  • Look up the basic requirement for your series first: General Engineering 0801 and Contracting 1102 set education rules that a resume has to show plainly.
  • Match your bullets to the specialized experience paragraph for your series, in its own duty words, and show 1 year of it at the grade below the one posted.
  • List a credential under the name it carried when you earned it, such as a legacy FAC-C level from before 02/2023.
  • Stay within 2 pages on a Title 5 announcement, and cut any line that proves nothing your series standard or the posting asks for.

What federal hiring officials look for in a government resume

OPM's guidance on resume length says a resume must let reviewers check eligibility, minimum qualifications and the other requirements in the announcement, and that first check is an HR specialist's job, using the qualification standard for the occupation as the yardstick. The hiring manager, an engineering lead or a contracting officer, sees only the applicants who pass.

Every federal job sits in a numbered occupational series: 0801 for general engineers, 1102 for contract specialists, 0201 for human resources, 0391 for telecommunications, 0343 for program analysts, 0346 for logistics. The series decides which rules your resume is measured against, and the grade (GS-9, GS-12) decides how much experience it has to prove. Write for both, in this order on the page:

  • Name, headline with your series title and grade (Contract Specialist, GS-1102-12) and contact details
  • A 2 to 3 line summary under your name, printed without a heading
  • Work Experience, newest first, each federal job with series, grade and hours per week
  • Skills, with the systems the announcement names
  • Certificates, a license or exam pass at the top
  • Education, with completion date, degree type and cumulative GPA
  • Languages if the job uses them, and a Volunteer Experience block if unpaid work proves the series

Best format for a federal government resume

Federal reviewers expect the reverse-chronological resume format, with your current post at the top. Federal careers climb grade by grade, often GS-7, GS-9, GS-11 and GS-12 in the same series, and a reviewer adds up months at each grade to see whether you have the year of experience the next grade asks for. A skills-first layout hides the dates that count needs.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a federal government resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Length is fixed by rule, not taste. OPM's Merit Hiring Plan guidance limits resumes to 2 pages for competitive and excepted service jobs under Title 5, and USAJOBS has enforced it since 09/2025. Within that cap, the resume length rules for private jobs still apply below the cap: cut what proves nothing the announcement asks for.

Federal Government resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
LengthUp to 2 pages on a Title 5 announcement, each line tied to the posting
Job title lineTitle, series and grade, hours: Logistics Management Specialist, GS-0346-12, 40 hours per week
Private-sector jobsTitle, employer, city and hours per week; no series or grade
DatesMonth and year for every start and end (MM/YYYY), Present for the current job
Photo and personal dataLeave the photo off; also leave off your Social Security number, birth date and marital status
FileA PDF of 5MB or less, the format USAJOBS recommends

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo, and federal resumes follow the same norm.

Federal government resume summary vs. objective

Write a resume summary if you already do this work at the grade below the one posted, and a resume objective if you qualify through your degree or are moving in from another field. Either way, name the series and grade you are applying for, so the reader knows which standard you are claiming.

Federal government resume summary formula

Series title, series and grade if federal, with X years in line of work. Your biggest result, with its scope. The degree, credential or clearance the series asks for.

Example

Logistics Management Specialist, GS-0346-12, with 10 years in inventory and supply planning, 7 of them at federal supply centers. Brought back orders older than 30 days from 260 to 45 for 11 field offices. B.S. in Business Administration, supply chain management concentration.

Don't

Results-driven professional seeking a rewarding career in federal service where I can apply my skills and serve the public.

Do

Realty Specialist, GS-1170-11, with 5 years managing leases for 32 field office buildings totaling 410,000 square feet. Renegotiated 9 expiring leases in fiscal year 2025 for $1.3M a year less than the prior rent.

The second version gives the series, the grade, the portfolio size and a result in dollars.

How to write federal work experience bullets that prove the grade

OPM's qualification policies ask for specialized experience: work that gave you the knowledge and skills of the job, usually 1 year of it at the next lower grade. Your bullets are that proof. List each job with 3 to 4 bullets on the current one and 1 to 3 on older ones, and copy the duty words of the announcement's specialized experience paragraph into them where they are true.

Numbers that prove federal government work
Line of workWhat to countExample bullet
Engineering (0801)Design reviews, project dollars, inspections, turnaround daysReviewed 46 design submittals for a $19M laboratory renovation and returned each within the 10-day contract window.
Contracting (1102)Contract actions, dollars obligated, award days, protestsAwarded 63 contract actions worth $28M in fiscal year 2025 with 0 sustained protests.
Human resources (0201)Announcements posted, days to hire, classification actionsPosted 52 job announcements and brought the average time to hire from 98 to 71 days.
Telecommunications (0391)Circuits, sites, devices migrated, downtimeMigrated 1,250 desk phones at 6 sites to VoIP with under 2 hours of downtime at each site.

Put the series and grade in the job title line, not in a bullet, and give each grade its own entry when you were promoted inside one office. A reviewer counting 52 weeks at GS-11 then finds the dates in one place.

Sample entry: logistics management specialist at 2 grades

Teskridge Materiel Support Center | Aurora, CO
  • Tracked 140 inbound shipments a month and raised on-time receipt posting from 81% to 96%.

Part-time and volunteer experience on a federal resume

OPM credits part-time work in proportion to the hours: 20 hours a week for 12 months counts as 6 months of experience. That is why the hours line matters on every job. Unpaid work earns the same credit as comparable paid work, so a volunteer role that used the job's skills belongs under Volunteer Experience with its own numbers.

Don't

Responsible for reviewing engineering drawings and specifications.

Do

Reviewed mechanical drawings for 14 building projects a year and flagged 37 code conflicts before the bid packages went out.

A count of projects and conflicts shows the level of review the grade requires.

Don't

Assisted with hiring and classification actions for various offices.

Do

Classified 85 position descriptions for 4 directorates in 2025 and cleared 30 overdue reviews in 3 months.

Skills and keywords for a federal government resume

HR specialists match your resume to the announcement's duties and qualifications, so take your hard skills from it rather than from a general list. Keep 6 to 8 in the Skills section, each one also visible in a bullet.

Hard skills for federal government jobs

  • Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR)
  • Position classification and staffing
  • Budget execution and fund tracking
  • Contracting officer's representative duties
  • Engineering design review
  • Network and voice system planning
  • Inventory and property accountability
  • Regulation and policy interpretation
  • Data analysis in Excel and Power BI
  • Decision memos and briefing papers

Soft skills federal managers value

  • Plain-language writing
  • Careful handling of sensitive information
  • Working across offices and agencies
  • Briefing senior officials
  • Patience with process and deadlines
  • Service to the public

Name systems the way the announcement does. A contract specialist posting may name the Federal Procurement Data System or SAM.gov, an engineering one AutoCAD or Revit, an HR one USA Staffing. If you used a different tool for the same task, list yours and describe the task in the posting's words.

Series rules: degrees and credentials federal jobs require

Some series accept experience alone, others have a basic requirement that no amount of experience replaces. Check yours before you decide what goes on page 1, and list certifications that prove it at the top of the Certificates section.

Basic requirements by occupational series
SeriesWhat qualifiesWhere it shows on the resume
General Engineering 0801A bachelor's in engineering from a school with at least 1 ABET-accredited program, or a route such as the FE exam, EIT or PE registration, 60 semester hours of the required courses, or a related science degree plus 1 year of professional engineering workThe degree line, and any FE, EIT or PE under Certificates
Contracting 1102, GS-5 to GS-12Any bachelor's, whatever the major, or 24 semester hours in fields such as accounting, business, finance, law, contracts, purchasing or economicsThe degree line, or the 24 hours named in the education note
Contracting 1102, GS-13 and up4 years in contracting or related work, the agency's required training, and a bachelor's that included or was supplemented by those 24 business semester hoursContracting jobs with dates, and the coursework in the education note
Telecommunications 0391Experience with communications systems, or study in a listed major such as electrical engineering, computer science or information systems managementBullets on systems you planned, ran or migrated
Human Resources 0201, Program Analysis 0343, Logistics 0346No series-specific rule; OPM's standard for administrative positions applies, with a bachelor's qualifying at GS-5 and only experience at the grade below from GS-12Grade-by-grade job entries
Credentials for common federal series
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examNCEESA 110-question computer-based exam of 5 hours 20 minutes, meant for students near graduation and recent graduates of EAC/ABET programs.
Professional Engineer (PE) licenseThe state engineering boardThe education, exam and experience rules of the board; OPM accepts a PE from any state, DC, Guam or Puerto Rico for the 0800 series.
FAC-C (Professional)Federal Acquisition Institute12 months of full-time contracting work, 5 required CON courses, the CON 3990V exam passed at 70%, then 80 continuous learning points every 2 years.
SHRM-CPSHRMMeant for people doing HR work or moving into it; a 134-question exam in a 4-hour appointment.

How to list education for a federal government job

OPM's resume guidance names four details for each degree: the school, the completion date, the degree type and your cumulative GPA. List your education with all four, and keep your transcripts ready, since an announcement may require them as proof.

For engineering and contracting jobs, write the full degree name exactly as your diploma does, because the HR specialist checks it against the series rule. If you qualify through coursework rather than the degree title, add a short note under the entry that names the hours, for example 27 semester hours in business, economics and accounting.

Sample education entry

Education

Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management Concentration05/2016
Colorado State University | Fort Collins, CO

Cumulative GPA 3.4.

Entry-level, career-change and veteran federal government resumes

Without federal experience, your private-sector jobs carry the same weight if they match the specialized experience paragraph: a buyer's purchasing work counts toward an 1102 job, a facilities engineer's work toward 0801. Leave series and grade off those entries and show their level through scope instead: dollars, systems, staff and deadlines. The career-change resume examples show how to lead with that proof.

  • Degree projects: a senior design project or capstone with its size and outcome, under Education.
  • Internships: each as a Work Experience entry with hours per week, since part-time work is prorated.
  • Volunteer roles: treasurer, grant writer or network volunteer, with numbers, under Volunteer Experience.
  • Exam passes: the FE exam or a SHRM-CP, under Certificates with the month and year.
  • Military service: each assignment with its dates, duties in civilian words and hours per week.

Don't

Recent graduate seeking an entry-level federal position to gain experience and grow professionally.

Do

Civil engineering graduate (B.S., 05/2026) who passed the FE exam in 06/2026, applying for a GS-5 General Engineer position. Senior design: stormwater redesign for a 22-acre parking lot.

The second version names the grade and shows the series requirement in the first line.

Veterans claim preference in the application with the documents the announcement lists, not on the resume itself, so spend the resume's space translating ranks and duties. Compare your military specialty with lists of jobs for veterans to find the series it fits, and the military-to-civilian resume examples show how to write a unit and its mission in plain terms.

Federal Government resume FAQ

Do I need a degree to get a federal government job?

Only for some series. General engineering asks for an engineering degree or an approved route such as the FE exam, and contracting asks for a bachelor's or 24 business semester hours. Human resources and logistics jobs accept experience instead, 3 years of it at GS-5.

Can I get a federal engineering job without an engineering degree?

Yes, through one of OPM's alternative routes for the 0800 series: current EIT or PE registration, a passed FE exam, 60 semester hours of the required science courses, or a related science degree plus 1 year of professional engineering work. Show that route on your resume.

What does a contract specialist need to qualify for a federal job?

Up to GS-12, any bachelor's regardless of major, or 24 semester hours in business-related fields. From GS-13, OPM adds 4 years in contracting or related work, the agency's training and a degree that includes those 24 hours, so list your coursework if your major was not business.

Does part-time or volunteer work count toward federal qualifications?

Yes. OPM prorates part-time work by hours, so 20 hours a week for a year counts as 6 months, and gives unpaid work the same credit as comparable paid work. Put the weekly hours on every entry so the reviewer can do that math.

Should I list a series and grade for a private-sector job?

No. OPM asks for series and grade on federal positions only. For a private-sector job, give the title, employer, dates and hours per week, and let the bullets show the level through budgets, team size and the decisions you made.

Which degrees qualify for a federal telecommunications job?

The 0391 standard lists majors such as electrical or electronic engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science, telecommunications management, information systems management and business administration, or other fields related to the position. Experience with communications systems also qualifies, so without one of those majors, write bullets on the systems you planned, ran or migrated.

How do I list a FAC-C certification I earned before 2023?

Under its legacy name and date, such as FAC-C Level II with the month and year. FAC-C (Professional) replaced Levels I, II and III in 02/2023 and legacy holders were converted automatically, so you can add that line with its date.
