Delivery Driver resume example

Delivery driving is a promise kept dozens of times a day: the right order, at the right door, inside the window the customer was given. An employer filling a van or box truck route wants a valid license and a clean record, a schedule kept, scans and payments without errors, and good manners on the doorstep. You already have the proof in your route data: stops a day, on-time rate, damage claims and years without a preventable accident.

How to Write a Delivery Driver Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep to 1 page and list jobs newest first (reverse-chronological), so your current or latest driving job sits on top.
  • Open with 2 to 3 lines that name your vehicle, your route type, your daily volume and your safety record.
  • Put a delivery number in every bullet: stops or packages a day, on-time rate, misdeliveries, damage claims or payments collected.
  • Open the Certificates section with your driver's license or CDL, add any endorsement or forklift certification under it, and never write the license number.
  • Name the scanners, routing apps and telematics systems you used, spelled the way the job ad spells them.
  • Run the finished file through an ATS resume checker before you apply on a carrier's or retailer's job portal.

What fleet managers check on a delivery driver resume

A fleet or route manager wants to know if you can legally drive the vehicle, finish the route on time and get customers what they ordered. The BLS says every delivery driver needs a driver's license from the state they work in and a clean driving record, and it lists loading cargo, talking with customers about their delivery needs, accepting payments and handling delivery confirmations as everyday duties. O*NET adds checking loads against shipping papers and keeping vehicle logs and billing records.

Customer contact is a bigger part of the job than many applicants show. In O*NET's survey of light truck drivers, 79% report constant contact with others, so a bullet about payments, complaints or ratings earns its place next to your route numbers. Build the resume from these parts:

  • Name and contact line, plus a headline like Route Delivery Driver or Delivery Driver, Class B CDL
  • 2 to 3 opening lines with your vehicle, volume and record (this part carries no heading)
  • Work Experience, latest route first
  • Skills, with the scanners and apps you used every shift
  • Certificates: driver's license or CDL on top, then any endorsement or forklift certification
  • Education
  • If you have them: Languages (a second language helps on many city routes), and a Volunteer Experience section or a short Key Achievements block

Best format for a delivery driver resume

Go with the reverse-chronological resume format: your newest driving job first, and under each title the employer, the town and MM/YYYY dates. Delivery employers want steady work they can verify and a clear move from smaller vehicles to bigger routes, and newest-first order shows both. If your latest job was not behind the wheel, keep that order anyway and let your opening lines carry the driving.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a delivery driver resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

One page is enough for almost every delivery driver, even with 3 or 4 employers. Give older jobs fewer bullets as they age, and drop jobs from more than 10 years ago unless they were driving, warehouse or customer roles. A truck driver moving down to local delivery can still keep to 1 page by cutting long-haul detail to a single line per job.

Delivery Driver resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; trim older jobs before you think about a second page
Title lineJob title plus vehicle or route: Route Delivery Driver, Refrigerated Box Truck
Safety lineYears without a preventable accident, stated in the summary and backed in a bullet
DatesMM/YYYY on every job, and Present on the current one
Type1 readable font at 10 to 12 pt, bold kept for job titles
Photo and private detailsA photo is rare on US and Canadian resumes; skip birth date, license number and SSN
File typePDF, unless an online application wants a .docx

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Your headline does more work in that spot: Delivery Driver, Clean Driving Record tells a fleet manager more in 5 words.

Delivery driver resume summary vs. objective

Use one test: have you been paid to deliver before? If yes, write a resume summary with your vehicle, your kind of route, your biggest daily number and your record. If no, write a resume objective that names the route you want and the work history that shows you are reliable. Draft it last, once your bullets are done, and reuse their best figure.

Delivery driver resume summary formula

Title with X years on route type routes in area. Your biggest daily number: stops, packages or on-time rate. Safety record and license.

Example

Delivery driver with 7 years on restaurant supply and furniture routes around Sioux Falls, SD. Finishes 28 to 34 commercial kitchen stops a day in an 18-foot refrigerated box truck and cut credit memos by 71% in 2025. No preventable accidents since 2019.

Don't

Hardworking delivery driver with a clean driving record and great customer service skills.

Do

Parcel delivery driver with 3 years on a suburban route in a step van, averaging 140 packages a day with 99% delivered on the first attempt. Clean driving record and no preventable accidents.

Vehicle, route, volume and a record a manager can check, all in 2 sentences.

How to write delivery driver work experience bullets with numbers

Give the route you drive now 3 to 4 bullets and earlier jobs fewer as they age, and open each with a verb. When you list work experience on a resume for a driving job, leave out what every driver does, such as obeying traffic laws, and write what your route delivered. Your handheld scanner, route sheets and end-of-day reports already hold most of these counts.

Numbers that prove delivery work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Route volumeStops or packages a day, route milesDelivered 165 packages across 92 stops a day on a 110-mile rural and suburban route.
On-time deliveryShare inside the promised window, missed stopsMade 98.7% of deliveries inside the customer's window in 2025.
AccuracyMisdeliveries, scan compliance, photo proofKept misdeliveries under 3 a month by photo-confirming every porch drop.
Damage and claimsCases or items hauled, damage claimsHauled 2,400 cases of bottled beverages in 2025 with 2 damage claims.
PaymentsCOD and cash collected, shortagesCollected about $9,000 a week in COD payments and balanced every route sheet.
Vehicle and safetyInspections, defects reported, accident-free yearsLogged 312 pre-trip inspections in 2025 and reported 6 defects before they caused a breakdown.
CustomersRatings, complaints, accounts keptHeld a 4.9 of 5 customer rating across 1,800 rated deliveries.
Leading driversDrivers trained, routes covered, ride-alongsTrained 5 new drivers on ride-alongs and covered open routes on 2 days a week.

Here is a route driver's entry with those counts in place.

Volume, route size and a fix the manager can measure turn a duty into a result.

Don't

Responsible for loading and unloading the truck.

Do

Delivery driver skills, scanners and routing apps

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume named in the job ad and shown somewhere in your bullets. Liftgate and pallet jack work fits a box truck route, temperature logging fits food and pharmacy routes, and stop sequencing fits any parcel job. Because most routes put you face to face with customers, add 1 or 2 customer service skills and back them with a rating, a payment count or a complaint number.

Hard skills for delivery drivers

  • Stop sequencing and route planning
  • Daily vehicle inspections
  • Handheld scanning and proof of delivery
  • Loading by stop order
  • Hand truck, dolly and pallet jack
  • Liftgate operation
  • Cash, check and COD handling
  • Invoice and load verification
  • Temperature-controlled delivery
  • Backing and parking in tight spaces

Soft skills route managers value

  • Punctuality
  • Courtesy at the door
  • Calm in traffic and bad weather
  • Problem solving on the route
  • Clear updates to dispatch
  • Stamina for lifting and walking

For software, use the real names of the tools you carried or logged into each shift. O*NET lists package location and tracking software, vehicle location and tracking software, automatic routing software and inventory tracking software among the technology light truck drivers use, and marks Microsoft Excel and Outlook as hot technology. Write the name of your scanner, your route or driver app and your fleet's telematics system, then show each one in a bullet.

Driver's license, CDL and forklift certification on a delivery driver resume

For most delivery jobs, a regular license and a clean record are all you need. O*NET defines light truck drivers as those driving a truck or van under 26,001 pounds gross vehicle weight, and postings for heavier trucks ask for a commercial driver's license (CDL). List certifications on your resume under Certificates with your license at the top, then each credential with its issuer and the month you earned it.

Licenses and certifications for delivery drivers
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Driver's licenseYour state's driver licensing agencyRequired for every delivery driver, from the state where you work, along with a clean driving record (BLS).
Commercial driver's license (CDL)Your state's driver licensing agencyA knowledge test and a driving test, with details set by each state; the BLS notes CDL drivers must pass a physical exam every 2 years.
Hazardous materials endorsement (H)Your state's driver licensing agency, on a CDLAn extra knowledge test and a background check, per the BLS.
Forklift operator certificationYour employer, under OSHA's powered industrial truck standardFormal instruction, practical training and an evaluation at work, with the evaluation repeated at least every 3 years.

How to write the driver's license line

Write the license type, the state and the year you got it, and never the license number. If you hold a CDL, put its class and any endorsements in your headline as well, such as Delivery Driver, Class B CDL. Forklift certification comes from the employer that trained and evaluated you, as OSHA's standard sets out, so name that employer and the evaluation month. A DOT medical card or a defensive driving course goes below, with its date.

Sample Certificates section: driver's license and employer training

Certificates

  • Driver's License, Class 1, South Dakota, since 2016, clean driving record
  • Forklift Operator Certification, Ashvane Restaurant Supply, evaluated 04/2025
  • Defensive Driving Course, completed 09/2024

High school diploma and on-the-job training for delivery drivers

The BLS names a diploma or its equivalent as the usual starting point for delivery drivers, with 1 month or less of training on the job from the company. O*NET's survey agrees: 74% of light truck drivers say their job requires a diploma or equivalent. When listing education on a resume, write the diploma or GED, then the school name, town and graduation year, and stop there.

Training you finished at work, such as a forklift evaluation or a company safe-driving program, belongs under Certificates with its date, not under Education. Leave out a GPA once you have any paid work, since a route manager hires on your record and reliability.

Entry-level, app-based and career-change delivery driver resumes

For your first route, an entry-level resume layout works: a short objective, your license and record in the first third of the page, then the jobs that show you turn up on time, handle goods with care and deal well with people. Count each one the way a route would be counted.

  • Delivery app work in your own car: deliveries a week, your rating and how many months you drove, as its own Work Experience entry with real dates.
  • Warehouse, stocking or dock work: pallet jack or forklift time, orders picked a shift and your safety record.
  • Restaurant or retail jobs: cash handled per shift, orders filled at rush and customers served.
  • Driving for a church, club or family business: trips or deliveries a month, listed under Volunteer Experience when unpaid.

Don't

Seeking a delivery driver position with a growing company where I can use my driving skills.

Do

Grocery stocker with 2 years of pallet jack and backroom work and a clean driving record for 6 years, seeking a local delivery driver role. Available for early shifts and weekend routes.

Even an objective can name the record, the lifting work and the shifts you can take.

Coming from a kitchen, a store floor or a warehouse, stay newest-first and lead with what a delivery route needs from you: a clean record, early starts, cash you balanced and streets you know. A career-change resume works when the opening bullets of your last job are the ones closest to delivery, such as takeout orders packed, deliveries received or registers closed. Save the story of why you are switching for 2 sentences of your cover letter.

Delivery Driver resume FAQ

Do I need a CDL to be a delivery driver?

Usually not. The BLS says every delivery driver needs a state driver's license and a clean record, and O*NET describes the light truck driver's vehicle as a van or truck under 26,001 pounds gross vehicle weight. Postings on heavier trucks ask for a CDL, which takes a knowledge test and a driving test.

How much do delivery drivers make?

BLS wage data put the median for light truck drivers at $44,860 a year in May 2025, and at $38,770 for driver/sales workers. Keep pay off the resume itself; route type, shifts and overtime shape the real offer, so raise it once the employer does.

Should I put my driving record on my resume?

Yes, if it is clean. Say it in 1 short line, such as no preventable accidents since 2020 or a clean driving record, in your summary or next to your license under Certificates. Never attach a copy of the record or write your license number on the resume.

How do I list delivery app work on a resume?

Treat it as a job. Give it a Work Experience entry with a title such as Independent Delivery Driver, the app or apps you drove for, your city and the real months you began and stopped. Then write 2 bullets with deliveries a week, your rating and any streak of on-time orders.

What if I have a ticket or an accident on my record?

Leave it off the resume, which is for what you offer, and answer honestly when the application asks, because the employer can check your record. End your summary with the years since, the miles driven cleanly and any defensive driving course you completed afterward.

How long should a delivery driver resume be?

One page. Even with 10+ years of routes, give older jobs fewer bullets and drop jobs from more than 10 years ago unless they were driving, warehouse or customer roles. A fleet manager wants your license, your current route and your record, and those all fit on 1 page.

What skills should a delivery driver put on a resume?

Choose 6 to 8 that appear in the job ad and in your own bullets: route planning, vehicle inspections, scanning and proof of delivery, liftgate or pallet jack work, cash and COD handling and courtesy with customers. Add the scanner and routing app names you know.

Can I get a delivery driver job with no experience?

Yes. Most drivers start with a diploma or GED and learn the route through 1 month or less of company training, as the BLS describes the job. Show a clean driving record, any delivery app or warehouse work, and the shifts you can cover.
