Forklift Operator resume example

Forklift work is judged on how much you move and how safely you move it. Which trucks you can run, how many pallets or trailers you handle in a shift and whether your safety record is clean decide the first read. Most of those numbers live on a supervisor's report or in your memory, so it pays to write them down: truck types, loads per shift, the date of your last operator evaluation and months without damage.

How to Write a Forklift Operator Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Lay out your jobs newest first on 1 page, each with its title, employer, location and MM/YYYY dates.
  • Name your truck types in the headline and the summary, such as stand-up reach truck or sit-down counterbalance, so a manager sees them before your job history.
  • Back each bullet with a number a shift lead tracks: pallets put away, trailers loaded, trucks tagged out, damage reports or recordable injuries.
  • List forklift certification under Certificates with the truck types, the employer that evaluated you and the month of your last evaluation, which OSHA requires at least every 3 years.
  • Call an OSHA 10 card a course completion card, because OSHA says no Outreach course is a certification.
  • Prove the WMS or RF scanner you used inside a bullet, then test the file with an ATS resume checker before you apply online.

What warehouse managers look for in a forklift operator resume

The BLS sums up the work in a single line: industrial truck operators drive trucks that move materials around storage yards, warehouses and other worksites. O*NET breaks it into the tasks a shift is made of, from working the controls that load, unload, transport and stack material to inspecting each load for accuracy, recording weights on tags and recharging batteries or replacing a liquefied-gas tank. A manager already knows you did those things. Your resume has to show how much, on which truck, and with what result.

Expect 3 questions from the first read: which truck types you are certified on, what volume you handle per shift, and how many incidents, damage reports or tag-outs your record holds. Answer them in these sections:

  • Name, a headline that carries your truck types, and your phone, email and city
  • 2 or 3 opening lines with your years, facility type and best number (no heading prints above them)
  • Work Experience, current job on top
  • Skills, with truck types and systems inside the list
  • Certificates, with forklift certification listed first
  • Education, usually 1 line
  • If there is room: Languages, Interests, and Volunteer Experience or Key Achievements (pick 1, not both)

Best format for a forklift operator resume

Pick the reverse-chronological resume format and start with the job you hold now. Each entry gets your title and MM/YYYY dates beside the employer and its location, so a manager can see how long you ran each kind of truck. Forklift careers usually grow by adding trucks and responsibility, from pallet jack to counterbalance, reach truck, lead operator and trainer, and dated entries show that growth in order.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a forklift operator resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

1 page is right for nearly every forklift operator, even with 10+ years on the floor. Keep the 3 or 4 most recent jobs, and roll short staffing-agency placements at different sites into a single entry under the agency's name with a single date range.

Forklift Operator resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page with your 3 or 4 latest jobs
DatesMM/YYYY on every entry; Present on your current job
HeadlineJob title plus 2 or 3 truck types: Forklift Operator, Reach Truck and Order Picker
ShiftsIf the posting lists shifts (nights, weekends, rotating), say which you can work in your opening lines
Photo and personal detailsUsually no photo in the US and Canada; leave off your date of birth, your Social Security number and your family status
File typePDF, or Word when the application portal asks for it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Distribution centers and staffing agencies often screen forklift applications through online portals, so plain headings help more than any design touch.

Forklift operator resume summary vs. objective

Ask yourself a single question: have you been evaluated and signed off to drive a truck at a job? If yes, write a resume summary that names your years, your facility type, your trucks and 1 number. If not, write a resume objective that names the operator or trainee role you want and the closest equipment you have used, such as a manual pallet jack. Both take 2 or 3 lines, and both can end with the shifts you can work.

Forklift operator resume summary formula

Title with X years in type of facility, certified on truck types. A volume, accuracy or safety number with its base. Last evaluation date or safety card, plus the shifts you can work.

Example

Forklift operator with 7 years in cold storage and paper manufacturing, certified on stand-up reach trucks and sit-down counterbalance forklifts. Puts away about 95 pallets a shift, with 0 product damage reports in 2025. Evaluated 03/2026, holds an OSHA 10-Hour General Industry card and is open to 2nd shift.

Don't

Dependable forklift operator with an excellent safety record, looking to join a team where I can contribute.

Do

Forklift operator with 4 years at a beverage distributor, running sit-down counterbalance trucks and double pallet jacks. Loads about 22 route trucks a night at 99.8% case accuracy. Available for nights and Saturdays.

The rewrite swaps a claim about safety for the trucks, the volume and the accuracy a manager can verify.

How to write forklift operator work experience bullets with numbers

Your current job takes 3 or 4 bullets and each older one 2 to 4, every bullet starting on an action verb. Most warehouses already count what you do in pallets, trailers, minutes and incidents, so ask your lead for last quarter's numbers or check the WMS reports before you write. The general rules for listing work experience on a resume apply too: every entry carries the title, the dates, the employer and where it is, and results beat a copy of your job description.

Numbers that prove forklift work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Putaway and replenishmentPallets per shift, rack height, location accuracyReplenished 60 pick faces a shift from reserve racking at 99.9% location accuracy.
Dock workTrailers per shift or day, minutes per trailer, pallets per loadUnloaded 14 inbound trailers a day, averaging 22 minutes for a 26-pallet trailer.
InventoryPallets located, counts supported, mis-slotted pallets fixedFound 18 lost pallets during a 2-day wall-to-wall count by checking every overflow lane.
Safety recordRecordable injuries, rack strikes, near misses reportedRan 4 years with 0 recordable injuries and 0 reported rack strikes.
Truck carePre-shift checks, LP or battery changes, trucks tagged outChanged LP tanks and logged the daily checklist for a fleet of 8 propane forklifts.
Helping new operatorsNew hires coached, ride-along shifts givenCoached 5 new hires on dock safety and load stacking ahead of their workplace evaluations.

This entry puts those counts to work. The current job names the truck in its first 2 bullets, and the older job keeps only the 2 lines that still matter.

Sample entry: forklift operator at a cold storage warehouse

Don't

Operated forklift on the loading dock.

Do

Loaded about 260 pallets a shift into 9 dry-van trailers on a sit-down propane forklift, following each trailer's load plan.

The rewrite names the truck, the volume and the standard the work was checked against.

Don't

Responsible for following all safety procedures.

Do

Reported 6 near misses in 2025; 1 of them led to new floor markings at a dock door crossing.

Forklift operator skills, truck types and software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that the job ad lists and your bullets back up, starting with the truck types. OSHA's forklift eTool sorts common powered industrial trucks into 7 classes, from Class I electric motor rider trucks to Class VII rough terrain forklift trucks, but job ads usually ask for the truck by its everyday name, so write that name on your resume.

Hard skills for forklift operators

  • Sit-down counterbalance forklift
  • Stand-up reach truck
  • Order picker
  • Electric pallet jack
  • Clamp and side-shift attachments
  • Pre-shift truck inspections
  • Pallet putaway and replenishment
  • Trailer loading and unloading
  • Load securing and stacking
  • Battery charging and LP tank changes
  • RF scanning

Soft skills warehouse supervisors value

  • Awareness of pedestrians and other trucks
  • Steady focus across long shifts
  • Clear radio and hand-signal communication
  • Reliable attendance
  • Calm during peak volume
  • Teamwork with pickers and loaders

O*NET flags a warehouse management system (WMS) as in-demand for industrial truck operators, and marks SAP software and Microsoft Excel as hot technology. If you scanned putaways into a named WMS, write the name the job ad uses and prove it in a bullet. An RF gun, a vehicle-mounted terminal or a voice headset is worth naming too, since most putaway and loading work is confirmed through one of them.

Forklift certification and OSHA training on a resume

Under OSHA's powered industrial truck standard, 29 CFR 1910.178, your employer has to train you and evaluate your driving before you operate a truck on your own. The employer then certifies it, and that record names you, the training date, the evaluation date and the person who trained or evaluated you. List certifications on your resume under Certificates, forklift first, so a manager scanning for it does not have to search.

Forklift certification and safety training, and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Forklift operator certificationYour employer, under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l)Formal instruction, practical training and an evaluation of your performance in the workplace, done by someone with the knowledge, training and experience to train and evaluate operators.
Refresher training and evaluationYour employerRequired after unsafe driving, an accident or near miss, a failed evaluation, an assignment to a different type of truck or a workplace change; a performance evaluation is due at least once every 3 years.
OSHA 10-Hour General IndustryAn OSHA-authorized Outreach trainerA course on common job-related hazards that ends with a course completion card; OSHA says it is not a certification and does not replace standard-specific training such as forklift.
OSHA 30-Hour General IndustryAn OSHA-authorized Outreach trainerA longer course OSHA describes as more appropriate for supervisors or workers with some safety responsibility, which fits a lead operator.

How to write the forklift certification line

Write Forklift Operator Certification, then the truck types, the employer that evaluated you and the month of your last evaluation. A new employer will still evaluate you on its own trucks, but OSHA's standard lets it skip training topics you already have, if that training fits its trucks and conditions and you are evaluated as competent, so a dated line can shorten your start. If a job ad asks for a forklift license, this is the line it means.

Sample Certificates section: forklift certification and safety card

Certificates

  • Forklift Operator Certification: stand-up reach truck and sit-down counterbalance, Varnholt Cold Storage, evaluated 03/2026
  • OSHA 10-Hour General Industry, course completion card, 10/2019

High school diploma and education on a forklift operator resume

The BLS says no formal educational credential is typically required for material moving machine operators, though companies may prefer applicants who finished high school, and forklifts can take only a few days to learn. List your diploma or GED with the school, the city and the date, below Work Experience. The basics of listing education on a resume are all this section needs.

Add a logistics or supply chain course from a community college only if you finished it or are enrolled, with the expected month. Once you have held an operator job, leave out GPA and class rank.

Sample education entry: diploma from a public high school

Education

High School Diploma06/2017
William Allen High School | Allentown, PA

Forklift operator trainee and career-change resumes

Trainees who have not been signed off on any truck yet start with an objective and the work that shows you can handle the floor. OSHA allows a trainee to drive only under the direct supervision of someone qualified to train and evaluate operators, so a hiring manager is mostly checking for safe habits, steady attendance and equipment you already know. An entry-level resume layout puts that evidence first.

  • Pallet jack use: manual or electric, where you ran it, loads moved per shift and how long you have used it.
  • Stockroom, receiving or grocery freight work: trailers unloaded per week, cases worked a night, shelves restocked before opening.
  • Safety training: an OSHA 10 card or a first aid course, listed under Certificates with its date.
  • Attendance: perfect-attendance months or the peak seasons you covered, written into a bullet or under Key Achievements.

Don't

Seeking a forklift operator position where I can learn and grow.

Do

Grocery receiver with 2 years on a manual pallet jack, seeking a forklift operator trainee role on 1st shift. Unloaded about 6 trailers a week with 0 damage claims in 2025.

Equipment you already run and a clean record give an objective the proof it needs.

Changing careers from delivery driving, construction, manufacturing or retail, stay with newest-first order and open with the transferable skills a warehouse supervisor trusts: equipment you have run, loads handled and a safety record. A career-change resume works best when its first bullets show the most dock-like work you did. Give the reason for the move 2 or 3 sentences in your cover letter instead of in the summary.

Forklift Operator resume FAQ

Do you need a forklift certification to be a forklift operator?

Yes, but your employer provides it. OSHA's standard requires the employer to train and evaluate each operator before they drive a truck, except during training, and then certify it. You can apply without one, and listing an earlier certification shows which trucks you can already run.

How often does forklift certification need to be renewed?

At least every 3 years. OSHA requires an evaluation of each operator's performance at least once every 3 years, and refresher training sooner after unsafe driving, an accident or near miss, a failed evaluation, a new type of truck or a change in the workplace. Put the month of your last evaluation on your resume.

Can I put an online forklift certification on my resume?

Yes, as training, not as a full certification. OSHA's standard calls for formal instruction, practical training and an evaluation of your driving in the workplace, and an online course covers only the first part. List it as forklift operator training with the provider and date, and add the employer evaluation once you have it.

Is an OSHA 10 card the same as a forklift certification?

No. OSHA says no Outreach course is a certification and that the 10-hour class does not meet an employer's training duty under specific standards such as forklift. List it separately under Certificates as an OSHA 10-Hour General Industry course completion card.

How old do you have to be to operate a forklift?

18, for most jobs outside agriculture. The US Department of Labor's hazardous occupations rules ban workers under 18 from operating most power-driven hoisting equipment, including forklifts. At 16 or 17, build experience in stockroom or receiving work that uses no hoisting equipment, and apply for operator roles at 18.

How long should a forklift operator resume be?

Keep it to 1 page. Your truck types, your latest 3 or 4 jobs with their numbers, your skills and your Certificates section all fit on 1 page, and a supervisor reading between shifts will not turn to a second.

How much do forklift operators make?

BLS wage data put the median pay for industrial truck and tractor operators at $46,420 a year in May 2025. Shift differentials, overtime, the state and the trucks you run all move the number. Leave pay off the resume and raise it on the application form or in the interview.
