Data Engineer resume example

Data engineers build the pipelines that every report, dashboard and model downstream depends on. Whoever screens your resume will check the languages and platforms you work in, such as SQL, Python, Spark, Airflow or Snowflake, and look for signs that your pipelines run on time and stay correct as the data grows. A list of tools proves little on its own, since nearly every applicant has one. Numbers do the convincing: rows loaded a day, runtimes cut, failed jobs fixed and cloud costs saved.

How to Write a Data Engineer Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep the page in reverse-chronological order and to 1 page, moving to 2 only with 10+ years or a long list of platform migrations.
  • Open with a 2- to 3-line summary that names your years, your stack and 1 pipeline result with its scale.
  • Every bullet needs a data engineering number: rows or events a day, runtime, freshness, failed loads, tests or monthly cloud spend.
  • Name the warehouse, the orchestrator and the processing engine exactly as the job ad does, and back each one with a bullet.
  • List cloud certifications under Certificates with the month and year, and keep a retired one, such as the Azure Data Engineer Associate, with its original date.
  • Put your GitHub link next to your email, then check how the file parses in an ATS resume checker before you send it.

What hiring managers look for in a data engineer resume

A data engineering manager checks what you built, how much data went through it, and whether it kept working. The BLS has no separate profile for data engineers; it describes database architects, the closest occupation it covers, as designing and building new databases for systems and applications. O*NET's tasks for data warehousing specialists come closer to the daily work: building the extraction, transformation and loading process, verifying the quality of warehouse data, and writing test scripts from unit to integration testing.

So each bullet should name a pipeline or a model, its volume and what improved. A technical lead will also scan for the engine (Spark, dbt, SQL), the orchestrator (Airflow, Dagster) and the warehouse or lakehouse (Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift). Build the page from these sections:

  • Name, headline (for example, Data Engineer, AWS Certified) and contact details, with your GitHub link
  • A short summary at the top, 2 to 3 lines long; it prints without a heading
  • Work Experience, starting with your current role
  • Skills, with your languages, platforms and tools in the same section
  • Certificates
  • Education
  • Optional: Key Achievements, Volunteer Experience or Languages

Best format for a data engineer resume

Choose the reverse-chronological resume format: your latest role comes first, each one with your title, the employer and its location, and start and end months. Data engineering careers usually grow from analyst, developer or junior engineer roles into larger platforms, and newest-first order lets a reader follow that growth in the stack and the scale. Use a combination format, with a skills block over a short history, only when your past jobs sit outside tech and the skills block is where your SQL and Python first show up.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a data engineer resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

A single page fits most data engineers with under 10 years. Go to 2 pages for a senior data engineer or platform lead with several migrations or teams behind them, and keep the 2 latest jobs on page 1.

Data Engineer resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 pages with 10+ years or several platform migrations
DatesMonth and year as MM/YYYY; Present marks your current role
Job title lineYour official title as written, such as Data Engineer II, never an inflated one
LinksGitHub or a portfolio URL beside your email, never a bare list of repositories
Photo, age and ID numbersMost US and Canadian employers expect no photo; skip your age, family status and SSN as well
File typePDF, or a .docx file when the application portal requires one

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Tech employers screen applications through tracking systems, so plain section names and text that is not trapped in an image matter more here than any design choice.

Data engineer resume summary vs. objective

If you already hold a data engineering role, write a resume summary with your years, your stack and 1 result. If this would be your first data engineering job, write a resume objective that names the role and the pipeline work you have already done, from an internship, a degree project or your current job. Draft it after your bullets and reuse their strongest figure.

Data engineer resume summary formula

Title with X years building batch or streaming pipelines in languages and platforms. Your best runtime, reliability or cost result, with its scale. Certification or the platform you know best.

Example

Data engineer with 7 years in logistics and insurance data, building batch and streaming pipelines in Python, Airflow, Kafka and Snowflake. Rebuilt 46 nightly jobs and cut the morning load from 5 hours to 70 minutes. AWS Certified Data Engineer (Associate).

Don't

Passionate data engineer with experience in big data technologies and cloud platforms, looking to build scalable solutions.

Do

Data engineer with 4 years on Spark and Databricks, processing 2.3 TB of vehicle telematics a day across 28 pipelines. Raised on-time data delivery from 97% to 99.6% of days.

The rewrite swaps big data for an engine, a daily volume and a delivery rate a manager can compare.

How to write data engineer work experience bullets with numbers

Write 3 to 4 bullets under your current job and 2 to 4 under each older one, each opening with a verb. Pipelines produce numbers on their own: run logs, scheduler history, warehouse bills and test results. Pull from those to show achievements on your resume rather than a list of duties.

Numbers that prove data engineering work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
OrchestrationJobs or DAGs, deadlines met, retriesMoved 22 cron scripts into Airflow and met the 6 a.m. data deadline on 99% of days over 12 months.
VolumeRows, events or GB a day, tables, sourcesLoaded 400 GB a day of clickstream data into partitioned BigQuery tables.
Data qualityChecks, incidents, bad files caughtWrote 85 data quality checks that stopped 12 malformed vendor files before finance saw them.
CostMonthly cloud spend, cluster hours, creditsCut Databricks compute from $18K to $11K a month by right-sizing 9 job clusters.
LatencyMinutes or seconds from source to tableBrought order-event latency down from 15 minutes to 40 seconds with Kafka and Spark Structured Streaming.
Migrations and usersTables moved, downtime, analysts servedMigrated 140 tables from an on-premises Oracle warehouse to Snowflake with 0 days of reporting downtime.

This entry follows those rules. The current job carries 4 bullets, each with its scale, and the earlier analyst role gets 2.

Data engineer skills: SQL, Python, Spark and cloud tools

Your Skills section should hold 6 to 8 technical skills for your resume, each one named in the posting and backed by a bullet below. SQL and data modeling belong on almost every data engineer resume; streaming, infrastructure as code or a second cloud only if you have shipped work with them.

Hard skills for data engineers

  • SQL and query tuning
  • Python
  • Data modeling (star schema, dimensional)
  • Batch ETL and ELT pipelines
  • Workflow orchestration
  • Stream processing
  • Distributed processing with Spark
  • Data quality testing
  • Cloud data warehouses
  • CI/CD for data code

Soft skills data teams value

  • Clear documentation
  • Working with analysts and data scientists
  • Calm incident response
  • Explaining tradeoffs to non-engineers
  • Prioritizing a backlog of requests
  • Code review

Put your platforms in the Skills section, then name each one again in a bullet that shows what you built with it. O*NET flags Snowflake, Apache Spark, Apache Kafka, Python and SQL as in-demand technology for database architects, and lists Apache Airflow and Informatica among its hot technologies. Write version or service names where the job ad does, such as Spark Structured Streaming, AWS Glue or Azure Data Factory, and leave out a tool you only installed once.

AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft and Databricks certifications for data engineers

No license is required to work as a data engineer, so certifications are optional proof, most useful when the posting names a platform. List certifications on your resume under Certificates, each with the company that awards it and the month you passed, plus any exam you have booked and its date. Pick the one that matches the cloud the employer runs on.

Data engineering certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
AWS Certified Data Engineer (Associate)Amazon Web ServicesA 65-question, 130-minute exam; AWS describes the ideal candidate as having 2-3 years in data engineering or data architecture. Valid for 3 years; first offered in 03/2024.
Professional Data EngineerGoogle Cloud1 exam; Google recommends 3+ years of industry experience, including 1+ year designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud. Valid for 2 years.
Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer AssociateMicrosoftExam DP-700, which expects skill with SQL, PySpark and KQL for loading and transforming data in Microsoft Fabric. Renewed through a free online assessment on Microsoft Learn.
Databricks Certified Data Engineer AssociateDatabricksA 90-minute exam with 45 scored multiple-choice questions. Valid for 2 years; you renew by passing the current version of the exam.

How to list the retired Azure Data Engineer Associate

Microsoft retired the Azure Data Engineer Associate certification (exam DP-203) and its renewal assessment at the end of March 2025. If you earned it, keep it under its original name with the date you passed, and add the Fabric Data Engineer Associate once you have it. Never write a pass date after 03/2025 for DP-203, and never relabel it as the Fabric credential.

Sample Certificates section: cloud data certifications with an exam booked

Certificates

  • AWS Certified Data Engineer (Associate), Amazon Web Services, 06/2025
  • Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate, Microsoft, 03/2026
  • Professional Data Engineer, Google Cloud, scheduled 12/2026

Education for data engineers: degrees, bootcamps and self-taught SQL

The BLS lists a bachelor's in computer and information technology or a related field as the typical education for database administrators and architects. Data engineers also come from statistics, math, information systems and engineering degrees, and some from bootcamps or years of self-taught SQL. When listing education on a resume, give the degree, the school and its location, and the month you finished.

New graduates can add 1 line under the degree with database, distributed systems or cloud coursework and a capstone that moved real data. After 2 to 3 years in the job, cut that line and let Work Experience carry the proof. A bootcamp goes under Education as its own entry, with the program name and the end date.

Education

B.S. in Computer Science05/2019
Purdue University | West Lafayette, IN

Coursework: database systems, distributed computing.

Entry-level and career-change data engineer resumes

Without a data engineering title yet, an entry-level resume works best: a short objective, Education high on the page, then any work that moved or cleaned data on a schedule. Treat each item like a job, with the tool and the scale.

  • Data or software internships: pipelines or DAGs you shipped, rows a day, tests added.
  • A capstone or degree project: the public dataset, how much of it, and the warehouse it landed in, written under Education.
  • Analyst or reporting work: SQL jobs you scheduled, reports you automated, hours saved.
  • Open-source contributions: merged pull requests to a data tool, linked from your GitHub in the contact details.

Don't

Recent computer science graduate seeking a data engineer position to grow my skills.

Do

Computer science graduate seeking a junior data engineer role. Built 6 Airflow DAGs loading 2M rows a day during a 12-week internship and earned the Databricks Certified Data Engineer Associate in 2026.

Even a first-job objective can name a tool, a scale and finished work.

Most career changers come from data analysis, software development, database administration or BI reporting. Keep reverse-chronological order, open with a summary that names the pipeline work already in your current job, and make your first 3 bullets the most engineering-heavy ones: scheduled loads, SQL you tuned, scripts you automated. A career-change resume from outside tech needs 1 piece of finished data work on the page, such as a scheduled pipeline on a public dataset, which is the proof that counts most when landing a job in tech without a tech title.

Data Engineer resume FAQ

Do I need a certification to become a data engineer?

No. No license or certification is required, and a degree plus pipeline work you can describe with numbers counts for more. A cloud certification helps most when the posting names that platform, such as AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Fabric or Databricks, and you have little paid work on it yet.

How long should a data engineer resume be?

1 page for most people under 10 years in the field. Use 2 pages once you have led several platform migrations or teams, and make sure the first page holds your 2 latest jobs with their strongest numbers.

Should I put GitHub or side projects on a data engineer resume?

Yes, if the code is yours and readable. Put the GitHub link beside your email, and write 1 strong project as a bullet under Education, an internship or Key Achievements, with the dataset, its size and the tools. Leave out tutorial repositories copied from a course.

What is the difference between a data engineer and a data analyst resume?

A data engineer resume is about the systems that move and store data; an analyst resume is about the insights drawn from it. So engineers lead with pipelines, volumes, runtimes and reliability, while analysts lead with reports, dashboards and decisions. SQL appears on both.

Which cloud platform should I list on my data engineer resume?

The one in the job ad, if you have used it. List the specific services you built with, such as Redshift and Glue on AWS or BigQuery and Dataflow on Google Cloud, rather than the provider's name alone, and leave off a cloud you only touched in a tutorial.

Can I still list the Azure Data Engineer Associate certification?

Yes, with the date you earned it. Microsoft retired the certification, exam DP-203, at the end of March 2025, so list it under its original name with your pass date. If the job is on Microsoft Fabric, the current credential is the Fabric Data Engineer Associate, exam DP-700.

How do I show data engineering results if the numbers are confidential?

Use ratios and ranges instead of the exact figures. Runtime cut by 80%, a pipeline handling millions of events a day, or failed loads down from weekly to monthly all show scale without exposing revenue or customer counts your employer keeps private.

How much do data engineers make?

The BLS has no separate data engineer category; for database architects, the closest occupation it tracks, it reports a median annual wage of $139,500 in May 2025. Keep pay off your resume and raise it in the interview or the application form.
