Cook resume example

Cooking for a living means putting out the same plate, right and hot, for hours at a stretch. Before anyone offers you a trial shift, the kitchen manager wants to know which stations you can run, how busy your kitchens got, whether your food handler card is current and how fast you learn a new menu. Plain duties like "prepared food and kept station clean" leave every one of those questions open. Your stations, plates a night, how fast orders left your station and the prep you finish before service close them.

How to Write a Cook Resume - Key Takeaways

  • List your kitchens newest first on 1 page, with the stations you worked written into each job title line.
  • Open with 2 to 3 lines that give your years, your stations, the kind of kitchen and how many covers you cook for on a busy night.
  • Back every bullet with a number the kitchen already tracks: covers a shift, ticket times, prep items finished by service, pounds of waste or inspection results.
  • Name the equipment and systems you can run, such as a char broiler, combi oven or kitchen display screen, under Skills and inside at least 1 bullet.
  • Put your food handler card or ServSafe certificate first under Certificates, with the month you earned it.
  • Leave pay, age and personal details off, then run the PDF through an ATS resume checker before you send it to a restaurant group or hotel.

What kitchen managers look for in a cook resume

The person hiring a cook, usually a chef, kitchen manager or head cook, is filling a spot on a line and needs to know you can hold it from the first ticket. The BLS describes restaurant cooks as teams, sometimes called assistant cooks or line cooks, who work at assigned stations, and names grilling, frying, measuring ingredients and keeping work areas clean among their duties. O*NET ranks regulating oven, broiler and grill temperatures, keeping prep areas sanitary and rotating stock among the core tasks of restaurant cooks.

So each job entry should answer 3 things: what you cooked on, for how many guests, and how safely. Arrange the page in sections an online application reads cleanly:

  • Name, headline (for example, Line Cook, Grill and Sauté) and contact details
  • 2 to 3 opening lines about your cooking, which print without a heading
  • Work Experience, starting with the kitchen you cook in now
  • Skills, including the equipment and kitchen software you use
  • Certificates, with your food safety certificate on top
  • Education, including a culinary certificate or apprenticeship
  • If space allows: Languages, Volunteer Experience or Key Achievements

Best format for a cook resume

Pick the reverse-chronological resume format: your current kitchen at the top, each job with your title and stations, the restaurant, where it is, and the months you started and left, written MM/YYYY. Cooks move up by station and by the size of the kitchen, from prep to fry, grill or sauté, then to lead cook, and newest-first order puts your hardest station at the top. If you changed stations inside 1 restaurant, keep a single entry and list the stations in the title line.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a cook resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

A cook resume fits on 1 page for most careers. Move to 2 pages only after 10+ years, when banquet, catering or lead cook roles add real detail, and keep your current job and your food safety certificate on page 1.

Cook resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 only after 10+ years with banquet, catering or lead roles
DatesMM/YYYY for start and end, Present for the kitchen you work in now
Job title lineTitle plus stations: Line Cook, Fry and Flat-Top
Availability1 line in your opening lines, only when the ad asks for early mornings, late nights or weekends
TypefaceA simple sans serif, 10 to 12 pt for the bullets
Photo, age and other personal dataLeave the photo off; skip age, marital status and your Social Security number
File typePDF, or Word if a restaurant group's application portal asks for it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. If a chef wants to see your food, the trial shift or a link to your plates does that job far better than a headshot.

Cook resume summary vs. objective

Ask 1 question: have you been paid to cook on a line, a grill or a prep table? If yes, write a resume summary with your years, your stations, the kind of kitchen and your volume. If not yet, write a resume objective: the cook job you want plus the closest kitchen work you have done. Either way, keep it to 2 or 3 lines and reuse a figure from your bullets.

Cook resume summary formula

Title with X years on stations in type of kitchen, cooking for covers on a busy night. 1 result on speed, waste or consistency, with a number. Food safety certificate and its status.

Example

Line cook with 7 years on sauté, grill and prep in a supper club and a sports bar, cooking for up to 230 covers on weekend nights. Cut grill ticket times from 15 to 10 minutes. ServSafe Food Handler certified, with the ServSafe Manager exam booked for 11/2026.

Don't

Hardworking cook with a passion for food, looking for a position in a fast-paced kitchen.

Do

Line cook with 4 years on fry and flat-top at a 24-hour diner, cooking about 300 breakfasts on weekend mornings. Holds a ServSafe Food Handler certificate and covers the grill on short notice.

Stations, kitchen, volume and a credential, each with a detail a chef can check.

How to write cook work experience bullets with covers and ticket times

Your current kitchen takes 3 to 4 bullets; each older one, 2 to 4. Kitchens count almost everything, from covers and tickets to prep pars and temperature checks, so most bullets can carry a number with its base, such as covers a night or minutes per ticket. When you list work experience on a resume, start with the size of the kitchen and your station, then add what changed while you held it.

Numbers that prove cooking work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
VolumeCovers a shift, seats, cooks on the lineCooked for 180 to 210 covers on Saturday nights on a 4-cook line.
SpeedTicket times, rush length, tickets on the railKept fry tickets under 8 minutes through a 2-hour lunch rush.
PrepPrep list items, par levels, time ready before serviceFinished a 28-item prep list by 4:30 p.m. for a 5 p.m. opening, 6 days a week.
Waste and yieldPounds discarded, trim yield, portion accuracyRaised trim yield on whole beef tenderloins from 68% to 74% by portioning in-house.
Food safetyTemperature logs, inspections, allergen ticketsKept twice-daily temperature logs for 7 coolers with no missed entries in 12 months.
Banquets and eventsGuests, plates, time to platePlated 350 wedding dinners in 40 minutes with a 6-cook banquet crew.
TrainingCooks trained, stations cross-trainedCross-trained 3 prep cooks to cover the fry station on weekends.

This entry puts those numbers to work. The current job opens with the kitchen's size and the stations, and the earlier prep job gets 2 lines.

Sample entry: line cook at a supper club

Line Cook, Grill and Sauté04/2022 – Present
Kestrine Supper Club | Springfield, IL

  • Cut grill ticket times from 15 to 10 minutes by portioning 6 steak cuts to weight before service.
  • Built the station's par sheet for 34 prep items, which cut discarded sauces and garnishes from 22 to 9 pounds a week.
  • Train new line cooks on sauté; 5 of the 6 trained since 2024 now run it alone on weekends.

  • Prepped 40 pounds of wings and 12 quarts of house sauces a day for a 70-seat sports bar.
  • Logged walk-in and line cooler temperatures twice a shift through 5 health inspections with no priority violations.

Don't

Responsible for cooking food on the line.

Do

Ran the sauté station alone for 160 covers on Tuesday to Thursday nights and cut refires from about 6 to 2 a night.

A chef reads volume and accuracy into the second line; the first only says you were there.

Don't

Helped with prep and cleaning.

Do

Prepped 25 pounds of vegetables and 6 gallons of stock each morning, ready 1 hour before lunch service.

Lead cook bullets: add the crew and the shift

To advance, the BLS says, cooks should take on more responsibility, such as supervising kitchen staff when the chef is away. If you run a shift, say so in numbers: the cooks on your crew, the shifts you lead each week, the cooks you trained and the line checks you sign off. Keep 1 cooking bullet as well, so the reader still sees which station you can work in a rush.

Cooking skills, kitchen equipment and software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting, each one a skill a bullet already proves. Knife work, food safety and at least 1 hot station suit nearly any cook job; butchery, baking or smoking belong only where you have done them on the job. The BLS lists attention to detail, dexterity, physical stamina and a sense of taste and smell as the qualities cooks need, so let your volume and ticket times show those instead of listing them.

Hard skills for cooks

  • Knife skills
  • Grilling and broiling
  • Sautéing
  • Deep frying
  • Prep lists and par levels
  • Temperature control and logs
  • Allergen handling
  • Portion and recipe control
  • Plating to spec
  • Stock rotation (FIFO)
  • Batch cooking for banquets

Soft skills chefs want in a cook

  • Keeping pace in a rush
  • Taking direction from the pass
  • Working a shared line
  • Showing up for every shift
  • Consistency plate after plate
  • Learning a new menu quickly

Equipment is part of your skill set on a cook resume. Write the pieces you can run without supervision, such as a char broiler, flat-top, fryer bank, combi oven, salamander or meat slicer, and tie at least 1 of them to a bullet. For software, O*NET lists point-of-sale restaurant software, recipe cost control software, menu planning software and food safety labeling systems among the tools restaurant cooks use, with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook flagged as hot technology. If the ad names its POS or kitchen display system, use that exact name.

Food handler card, ServSafe and ACF certifications on a cook resume

Many states do not require any certificate for cooks, the BLS says, while some states and localities require a food handler's certification. Check the rule where you will work, then add certifications to your resume in their own Certificates section: food safety first, then allergen training, then any culinary credential, each with the issuer and the month you earned it.

Food safety and culinary credentials for cooks
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
ServSafe Food HandlerNational Restaurant AssociationRecognized by the issuer for 3 years; your state, county or employer may set its own card or rules.
ServSafe Food Protection Manager CertificationNational Restaurant AssociationAn exam taken under a registered ServSafe proctor, accredited by ANAB under Conference for Food Protection standards, and recognized for 5 years. It is built for foodservice managers.
ServSafe AllergensNational Restaurant AssociationRecognized for 3 years; useful wherever you fire allergy tickets.
Certified Culinarian (CC)American Culinary FederationA route such as a diploma or GED plus 2 years of entry-level cooking, a 1-year culinary certificate plus 1 year, an associate's degree in culinary arts or the ACFEF apprenticeship; 30-hour courses in nutrition, food safety and sanitation, and supervisory management; written and practical exams. Renewed every 5 years.

Illinois shows how a state rule can work: the Illinois Department of Public Health says employees should generally receive food handler training within 30 days of hire and may need to renew it every 3 years, and that this training is not meant for staff who already hold a food protection manager certification. Your own state or county may run a different program, so write the card by the name it carries where you earned it.

Culinary school, apprenticeship or high school: education on a cook resume

Cooks typically do not need formal education and usually learn on the job, according to the BLS, though employers may require or prefer applicants who finished high school. Vocational cooking schools and culinary institutes run programs that last from a few months to 2 years. Apprenticeships, sponsored by culinary institutes, industry associations or trade unions, typically last about 1 year and cover food sanitation and safety, knife skills and equipment operation, with entry at 17 or older once high school, or its equivalent, is finished.

When you list education on a resume, give the credential by its full name, the school or sponsor, the city and the month you finished. A recent graduate can add the externship hours in 1 line; after 2 or 3 years of line work, drop that line and keep the credential. The American Culinary Federation's apprenticeship has been registered with the U.S. Department of Labor since 1979, and completing it makes you eligible for ACF certification, so list a finished apprenticeship here with its sponsor.

Apprentice, entry-level and career-change cook resumes

Many cooks start as a kitchen helper or food preparation worker, the BLS says, and move up to assistant cook or line cook from there; a prep cook job is a common first step. For a first cook job or an apprenticeship, use an entry-level resume layout: an objective, your training near the top, then any time you have spent in a kitchen, each with a number.

  • Dishwasher or kitchen helper shifts: a full Work Experience entry, with the prep you were trusted with and the covers the kitchen served.
  • Externship or apprenticeship hours: the kitchen, the stations you rotated through and your total hours.
  • School cafeteria, camp or catering work: meals or guests per day and the part you cooked.
  • Soup kitchen or food bank cooking: under Volunteer Experience, with meals served a week.

Don't

Seeking an entry-level cook position where I can learn and grow.

Do

High school graduate with 2 years washing dishes and prepping salads at a 90-seat family restaurant, seeking a line cook job. ServSafe Food Handler certified, and has run the cold station alone at Sunday lunch.

An objective still needs proof: kitchen time, a station and a certificate.

Coming to the line from serving, retail or another trade, stay with newest-first order and lead with 2 or 3 objective lines: the station you want, plus your food safety certificate. A career-change resume works best when the first bullets under each job show kitchen-ready habits, such as speed at volume, following specs or keeping temperature logs. Give the reason for the switch in 2 or 3 sentences of your cover letter, following the steps in how to write a cover letter. Once you lead a station, the sous chef and chef pages show where the resume goes next.

Cook resume FAQ

Do I need a food handler card to work as a cook?

Only where your state or locality requires one. The BLS says many states do not require certification for cooks, while some states and localities do. Illinois, for example, generally expects food handler training within 30 days of hire. If you hold a card, list it first under Certificates with its month.

Is ServSafe Manager worth getting as a line cook?

Yes, once you are aiming at a lead cook or kitchen manager job. ServSafe describes the Food Protection Manager Certification as training for foodservice managers, and it is recognized for 5 years. For line work, a food handler card is usually enough, so list the manager certificate when you have it or the month your exam is booked.

How long should a cook resume be?

1 page for almost every cook. Go to 2 pages only after 10+ years, when banquet, catering or lead cook jobs need room, and keep the current kitchen and your food safety certificate on page 1.

How do I list several stations at the same restaurant?

Use 1 job entry and put the stations in the title line, such as Line Cook, Fry, Grill and Sauté. Then give the bullets to the station you worked most, plus 1 bullet on the move, such as the month you took over grill.

Can I get a cook job without culinary school?

Yes. The BLS says cooks typically do not need formal education and usually learn on the job, although employers may require or prefer applicants who finished high school. List your diploma under Education and let your kitchen hours, stations and food safety certificate carry the page.

Should I list kitchen equipment on a cook resume?

Yes, the pieces you can run alone. Put 3 or 4 of them, such as a char broiler, combi oven or slicer, under Skills, and name at least 1 inside a bullet with a number, so a chef knows you can work their line on day 1.

How do I write a cook resume with no restaurant experience?

Lead with an objective naming the cook job you want, then list everything that put you near food: dishwashing, cafeteria or camp kitchens, catering, or cooking at a food bank. Give each a number, such as meals a day, and add a food handler certificate if your state offers one.

How much do cooks make, and should pay go on the resume?

Leave pay off your resume. For a benchmark, BLS OEWS data put the median for restaurant cooks at $17.98 an hour, or $37,390 a year, in May 2025. Your offer will depend on your city, the kitchen and your stations.
