18 Banking Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Branch managers, operations leads and lending managers read a banking resume for accuracy, customer results and the registrations a role requires. Use these examples and the guide below to quantify your cash, account and loan work, and to list your NMLS registration, FINRA exams and certificates where a bank looks for them.

Banking resume example

Banking runs on trust, and so does hiring at a bank. Whether you work a teller line, open accounts as a universal banker or process loans in operations, a bank wants to see accurate cash and account work, customers who come back, careful compliance habits and results with a number on them. Those numbers exist in your branch's reports even if they have never been on a resume. This guide shows where to find them and which registrations and exams to list for your role.

How to Write a Banking Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Choose reverse-chronological order on 1 page, and go to 2 only with 10+ years across branch, lending or operations roles.
  • Open with a 2- to 3-line summary naming your banking area, your years, your core system and 1 measured result.
  • Count what the bank already counts: drawer outages, accounts opened, referrals that closed, loans processed and exceptions cleared.
  • Name your core, lending and CRM systems exactly as the job ad spells them, and prove each one inside a bullet.
  • List an NMLS registration and every passed FINRA exam under Certificates with its date, and mark an exam you have not sat yet as scheduled.
  • Keep customer names, account numbers and your own personal details off the page, then scan the file with an ATS resume checker before you apply.

What hiring managers look for in a banking resume

Banking covers several jobs that read differently on paper. The BLS lists counting cash drawers at the start and end of shifts, answering account questions and recording transactions as teller duties, while O*NET describes loan officers analyzing applicants' financial status and credit and approving loans within set limits. On either side of the bank, a manager checks that your numbers balance, that customers trust you and that you follow the bank's controls.

Use the standard sections, so hiring software reads each one correctly:

  • Name, a headline with your banking title (Personal Banker, Credit Analyst) and contact details
  • A summary of 2 to 3 lines under your name, which needs no heading of its own
  • Work Experience, with your newest bank or credit union job on top
  • Skills, with your core banking, lending and CRM systems
  • Certificates, with an NMLS registration and FINRA exams listed first
  • Education
  • Optional: Volunteer Experience or Key Achievements (choose one), plus Languages if you serve customers in more than 1

Best format for a banking resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format, with your current role on top and each entry carrying the title, the bank, its city and the dates in MM/YYYY form. Bank careers usually climb one ladder, such as teller to personal banker to branch manager, or loan processor to underwriter to lender, and this order makes each step visible. A combination format, with skills above your history, only earns its place if your work so far has little cash or customer contact.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a banking resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

One page fits most banking resumes up to about 10 years in the field. A bank branch manager or senior lender with a longer record can use 2, provided page 1 holds the 2 latest roles and your registrations.

Banking resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 only with 10+ years in branch, lending or operations work
DatesMM/YYYY throughout, with Present on your current role
Job title lineThe title your bank used, plus the area when it adds meaning: Universal Banker, Retail Banking
Bank typeCommunity bank, credit union or national bank, stated in your first bullet when the name does not show it
TypefaceCalibri, Arial or another plain font, body text between 10.5 and 12 pt
Photo and privacyMost US and Canadian resumes carry no photo; keep your age, family status and SSN off as well
File typePDF, or Word when the bank's application portal asks for it

Banks also read your resume for privacy habits, so never put a customer's name, an account number or a loan number on the page, even when you describe a case you handled.

Banking resume summary vs. objective

Decide with 1 question: have you held a job at a bank or credit union? If yes, write a resume summary with your area of banking, your years, your main system and your best number. If not, write a resume objective that names the role you want and the cash, sales or service record you already have.

Banking resume summary formula

Title with X years at bank type, working in core or lending system. Your best balancing, sales, lending or operations result, in figures. Registration or exam status.

Example

Personal banker with 8 years at a credit union and a community bank, working in Jack Henry SilverLake. Grew a book of 410 households to $38M in deposits and closed 96 consumer loans in 2025. NMLS-registered, with the SIE and Series 6 passed.

Don't

Customer-focused banking professional with excellent communication skills, looking to grow with a reputable financial institution.

Do

Universal banker with 4 years at a credit union, opening checking, savings and auto loan accounts in Fiserv DNA. Balanced the drawer on 98% of shifts and referred 52 members to the mortgage team in 2025.

This version names the institution, the products, the system and 2 results a branch manager can check.

How to write banking work experience bullets with numbers

Give your current job 3 to 4 bullets and each older job 1 to 4, every one opening with a verb. Most banking work already leaves a record in the core system: drawer outages, accounts opened, referrals, loans booked and exceptions closed. Pull those counts before you write, and turn each duty into one of your achievements on your resume.

Numbers that prove banking work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Cash and balancingDrawer outages, vault counts, cash limitsBalanced a $60K teller drawer with 1 outage over 14 months and passed 4 surprise vault counts.
Account openingNew accounts, households, products per householdOpened 230 checking accounts in 2025 and raised products per household from 2.1 to 2.8.
ReferralsReferrals sent, referrals that closed, partner teamsSent 75 referrals to wealth and mortgage partners; 31 became new relationships.
LendingApplications, approvals, decision time, portfolio sizeProcessed 140 consumer loan applications a quarter with a 3-day average decision time.
Operations and complianceExceptions, CTRs filed, audit findingsCleared a 300-item exception backlog in 6 weeks; the branch closed its 2025 audit with 0 findings.
Digital banking and serviceCustomers enrolled, survey scores, complaints resolvedEnrolled 180 customers in mobile deposit and held a 4.8 of 5 branch survey score.

Here is a personal banker's entry with those counts in place. The first bullet sets the size of the book and the branch, and the earlier teller job gets 2 lines.

Banking skills and software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that the job ad asks for and that appear in your work bullets. Cash handling and BSA/AML procedures fit almost every branch role; credit analysis, underwriting or treasury services only where you have done that work.

Hard skills for banking

  • Cash handling and drawer balancing
  • Account opening and KYC
  • BSA/AML procedures and CTR filing
  • Consumer lending
  • Credit analysis
  • Loan documentation and closing
  • Wire transfers and ACH
  • Fraud detection
  • Needs-based referrals
  • Regulation E and Regulation CC

Soft skills bank managers value

  • Discretion with confidential data
  • Clear explanations of products and fees
  • Accuracy with a line of customers waiting
  • Long-term relationship building
  • Following procedure every time
  • Calm with upset customers

Show the soft skills through results, such as a complaint you settled or a member you kept, the way strong customer service skills show on any resume. Then list your systems with your skills and show each one at work in your bullets. O*NET marks Microsoft Excel, Outlook and Office as in-demand for loan officers, and its teller profile names platforms such as Jack Henry & Associates Vertex and Hyland Software OnBase. Write your core platform, loan origination system and CRM by the names the job ad uses.

NMLS, FINRA exams and banking certifications on a resume

Most branch jobs need no license to start: the BLS says tellers typically need to have finished high school and may need to pass a background check. Registrations matter once you originate home loans or sell investments. Under the CFPB's Regulation G, each bank or credit union employee who acts as a mortgage loan originator must register with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry and get a unique identifier, and FINRA's exams qualify you to sell securities. List certifications on your resume in the Certificates section, with registrations first.

Banking registrations and exams, and what each takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Mortgage Loan Originator registrationNationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry (NMLS), under the SAFE ActRequired for bank and credit union employees who originate home loans: register, get a unique identifier and renew each year. Employees never registered who originated 5 or fewer residential mortgage loans in the past 12 months are exempt.
SIE (Securities Industry Essentials)FINRAOpen to anyone 18 or older without a sponsoring firm: 75 questions in 1 hour and 45 minutes. A pass stays valid for 4 years but does not qualify you for registration alone.
Series 6 (Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products)FINRASponsorship by a FINRA member firm. With the SIE, it covers mutual funds, variable annuities, variable life insurance and 529 plans.
Series 7 (General Securities Representative)FINRASponsorship by a FINRA member firm. With the SIE, it covers the sale of all securities products.
Series 63 (state law exam)NASAA, administered by FINRAA state securities law exam with no corequisite; check whether the job ad requires it.

How to write an NMLS registration or a scheduled exam

Write the registration with the NMLS as its issuer and the year you first registered; mortgage postings may also ask for your NMLS ID, which you can add to the same line. Give every FINRA exam its number, its full name and the date you passed it, and list an exam you have booked as scheduled with its month, so no one reads it as passed.

Sample Certificates section: personal banker with registrations

Certificates

  • Mortgage Loan Originator registration, Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry (NMLS), 2022
  • Securities Industry Essentials (SIE), FINRA, passed 09/2023
  • Series 6: Investment Company and Variable Contracts Products, FINRA, passed 02/2024
  • Series 63: Uniform Securities Agent State Law Exam, NASAA, scheduled 12/2026

Compliance and risk roles add credentials of their own, such as CAMS from ACAMS or CRCM from the American Bankers Association; list them in the same section with the issuer and the year. A notary commission from your state belongs there too when you notarize documents at the branch.

High school diploma or degree: education on a banking resume

The entry point depends on the job. The BLS says tellers typically need to have finished high school and learn on the job, often from head tellers, while loan officers typically need a bachelor's degree and on-the-job training. If high school is your highest education, list your diploma with the school, the city and the graduation date, and let Work Experience and Certificates carry the page.

A finance, economics or business degree goes below Work Experience once you have a bank job, following the standard advice on listing education on a resume. Add a GPA of 3.5 or above while you are within about 3 years of graduating, then drop it. In-house bank training belongs in a bullet under the job that gave it, not in Education.

Sample education entry: finance degree

Education

B.B.A. in Finance05/2018
University of South Dakota | Vermillion, SD

Dean's List, 4 semesters.

Entry-level and career-change banking resumes

Without bank experience, an entry-level resume opens with an objective and puts your cash, sales and service record first. Look at every earlier job the way a branch manager would, and ask what you counted, balanced or sold there.

  • Cashier or retail work: register balancing, transactions per shift, cash errors, store card sign-ups.
  • Restaurant or hospitality work: tills closed out, guests served per shift, complaints you settled.
  • Treasurer of a club or nonprofit: budget size, deposits made and reconciled, listed under Volunteer Experience.
  • A bank internship or finance coursework: credit memos drafted, loan files reviewed, the systems you used.

Don't

Motivated individual seeking a banking position where I can use my people skills.

Do

Grocery head cashier seeking a teller role, with 3 years of balancing a $1,500 till and 0 shortages in 2025. Fluent in English and Spanish.

With no bank on the page yet, the objective still names the role, a cash record and a skill a branch can use.

Coming from accounting, retail management or a call center, stay with reverse-chronological order but move your most bank-like tasks, such as reconciliations, cash audits or account questions, to the top of your current job. A career-change resume does not need to explain the move; your cover letter does, and our finance cover letter examples show how to open with the skills that carry over.

Banking resume FAQ

Do you need a license to work at a bank?

Not for most branch jobs. Tellers typically start straight from high school. Bank and credit union staff who originate home loans must register with the NMLS, and anyone selling securities needs FINRA exams such as the SIE with the Series 6 or 7.

Where does an NMLS registration go on a banking resume?

Under Certificates, listed first, with the NMLS as the issuer and the year you registered. For a mortgage role, add your NMLS ID to that line and mention the registration in your summary, since many lending postings ask for it.

Should I list the SIE if I have not passed the Series 6 or 7?

Yes. FINRA lets anyone 18 or older take the SIE without a sponsoring firm, and a pass stays valid for 4 years. It does not qualify you for registration alone, so list it with its pass date and let the bank see you are ready for the next exam.

How long should a banking resume be?

One page covers most banking careers up to about 10 years. Branch managers, senior lenders and operations leads with a longer record can use 2 pages, as long as the first page carries the latest 2 roles and every registration.

What banking software should I put on my resume?

Your core banking platform, your loan origination system, the CRM and Excel, each spelled exactly as the posting spells it. Back every one with a line of proof about what you did in it, such as booking loans or tracking a referral pipeline.

How do I describe confidential customer work on a banking resume?

Use counts, dollar totals and outcomes, never names. Write 12 commercial clients with $9M in balances instead of a client's name, and leave out account numbers, loan numbers and any detail of a fraud or compliance investigation.

Can I get a banking job with no bank experience?

Yes. Tellers usually learn the job after they are hired, from balancing a drawer to using the bank's software. Lead with an objective and the cash, sales and service numbers from your current job.

Should I mention sales goals on a banking resume?

Only as results a customer benefited from. Write the referrals that became relationships or the accounts opened with direct deposit, with real numbers, rather than a percentage of a sales quota with no base behind it.

Should I put salary expectations on a banking resume?

No. Pay belongs in the interview or on the application form. For a benchmark, BLS figures for May 2025 put median annual pay for tellers at $43,030; your offer depends on the role, the bank and your registrations.
