Scholarship resume example

Most scholarship applicants write a resume before they have much work history, and that can feel awkward. Selection committees know you are still a student. Your grades count, and so do the activities you stuck with, the responsibility you took on and how you help your community. Listing every club, sport, job and service project with no numbers makes each entry look the same. Give each activity a number, such as hours or members, and put the ones the award rewards first.

How to Write a Scholarship Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep it to 1 page in reverse-chronological order, with Education at the top while you are in school.
  • Open with a 2- to 3-sentence objective that names your grade or degree, your GPA, the field you plan to study and your strongest result.
  • Give every activity a number a committee can picture: hours a week, seasons, members led, hours served or a placing.
  • Put honors and competition results under Key Achievements, and AP or test scores on your Education entry.
  • Read the scholarship's selection criteria and make sure your top 3 entries answer them.
  • Use the same dates, hours and titles on your resume as on every application form, so nothing contradicts.

What scholarship committees look for in a scholarship resume

A scholarship committee reads your resume next to your transcript, your essay and your letters, and it uses the resume to answer 3 questions: how well you do in school, how you spend the hours outside class, and whether you match what the award was created to reward. A merit award looks for grades and test scores, a service award for steady volunteering, and a leadership award for roles where other people relied on you.

Every section should give a reviewer facts they can compare with other applicants: dates, hours, team sizes and results. These are the sections the resume needs, with headings any portal or reader recognizes:

  • Name, a headline such as High School Senior or B.S. Biology Graduate, and contact details
  • Objective or summary: a short opening paragraph that needs no heading of its own
  • Education, first while you are still in school
  • Work Experience, including part-time, summer and family-business jobs, plus any club or sport where you held a role
  • Key Achievements for honors, awards and competition results, or Volunteer Experience if service is your strongest story
  • Skills, with any software or lab tools you use
  • Certificates, such as CPR or lifeguard training
  • Optional: Languages and Interests

Best format for a scholarship resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your current school first, then your most recent job, activity or role, each with its dates. It shows how your involvement grew from freshman year to now, and a committee can follow it in seconds. Graduate school applicants use the same order, with research or work since the bachelor's degree above the degree itself.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a scholarship resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep it to 1 page. Some scholarships set a page limit or ask for an activities list in their own form instead of a resume; follow their format first. A graduate applicant with publications, research posters or teaching experience can run to 2 pages if the program allows it.

Scholarship resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page for high school and college applicants; 2 only for graduate applicants with research
Section orderEducation first while you are a student, then Work Experience and your activities
Activity datesMM/YYYY ranges, or grade levels (9 to 12) where the form asks for them
TypeOne clean font in 10.5 to 12 pt, with headings a size larger
Photo and private detailsUsually no photo for US and Canadian awards; never your birth date, Social Security number or marital status
File typePDF, named with your full name and the word resume

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. A single-column layout without text boxes or tables keeps your sections in order even if a portal reads the file as plain text.

Scholarship resume objective vs. summary

Use an objective if you are in high school or college: 2 to 3 sentences that say what you study, what you plan to study next, and the one result that best fits the award. Use a summary if you are applying to graduate school with a year or more of work or research behind you, and lead with that experience. These resume objective examples show the difference in tone. Rewrite the objective for each scholarship so its last sentence names that award's purpose.

Scholarship resume objective formula

Grade level or degree at school with a GPA GPA, planning to study field at college or program. Your strongest result, counted. How it connects to the scholarship's purpose.

Example

Senior at Boise High School with a 3.92 GPA, planning to study civil engineering at the University of Idaho. Captain of an 18-member robotics club that raised $2,400 for parts in 1 season. Hoping to design safer bridges for rural Idaho towns.

Don't

Hardworking and motivated student seeking a scholarship to help me achieve my goals and pay for college.

Do

Junior at a public high school with a 3.7 GPA and 4 AP courses, planning a nursing degree. Volunteered every Sunday for 2 years at a senior living center and earned CPR certification in 2026.

The rewrite gives a reviewer a GPA, a field, a commitment over time and a credential.

How to describe activities, jobs and volunteering with numbers

Treat each club, sport, job and service role as an entry with a title, an organization, dates and 1 to 3 bullets that start with a verb. The extracurricular activities on your resume carry the most weight when they show years of involvement and a role that grew. A part-time job counts as much as a club: working 15 hours a week while keeping your grades up is a result in itself.

Numbers that prove a scholarship applicant's record
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
AcademicsGPA, class rank, honors or AP coursesRanked 11th in a class of 402 with 7 AP courses completed.
LeadershipMembers led, meetings or events run, sign-upsChaired 6 meetings a semester for a 22-member club and grew fall sign-ups from 35 to 61.
SportsSeasons, starts, stats, team honorsStarted 41 games over 3 varsity seasons at shortstop and batted .338 as a junior.
Part-time jobsHours a week, customers, duties you were trusted withWorked 15 hours a week through the school year while holding a 3.8 GPA.
VolunteeringTotal hours, people served, how long you stayedGave 120 hours over 2 years to a food pantry, sorting about 900 pounds of donations a week.
Research and projectsHours, results, placings, presentationsPlaced 2nd of 48 entries at a regional science fair with a low-cost water-quality sensor.

If you also apply through the Common App, keep your figures the same in both places. According to Common App, its Activities section takes up to 10 activities, asks for hours per week and weeks per year for each, and gives you 150 characters for details, honors and accomplishments. Your resume has room for the full bullet; the form needs the short version.

Here is how one high school senior writes a Work Experience section that counts its hours and results. The current job gets 3 bullets and the summer job gets 1.

Sample entry: high school senior with a part-time job

Work Experience

Counter Associate09/2025 – Present
Pelleridge Bakery | Boise, ID
  • Work 12 hours a week during the school year and open the store on Saturdays with 1 shift lead.
  • Take about 140 orders on a Saturday shift and balance a cash drawer of up to $1,800 at close.
  • Trained 3 new hires on the register and the food safety checklist in spring 2026.
Lifeguard06/2025 – 08/2025
Corvenna Aquatics | Meridian, ID
  • Guarded a 6-lane outdoor pool 30 hours a week for 10 weeks and made 2 assists with no injuries.

Don't

Volunteered at a local food bank.

Do

Packed weekend food bags for 75 elementary students every Friday during the 2025-26 school year, 3 hours a week.

The rewrite says who you helped, how often and for how long.

Don't

Member of the tutoring club.

Do

Tutored 9 freshmen in Algebra 1 twice a week; 7 of them raised their semester grade by at least 1 letter.

When service is the center of your application, give it its own Volunteer Experience section with the same entry format as a job, and follow these tips on listing volunteer experience with hours and dates. Use Key Achievements instead when honors and competition results are your strongest material, so the page stays at 1 page.

Skills to put on a scholarship resume

List 6 to 8 skills, and back each one with an entry that shows it in use. Scholarship committees care about soft skills such as responsibility and leadership, but naming them is not enough: a captaincy, a training role at work or a long tutoring commitment proves them better than the word does.

Hard skills for scholarship applicants

  • Academic writing
  • Public speaking
  • Data analysis in Excel or Google Sheets
  • Lab techniques
  • Programming in Python or Java
  • CAD or 3D modeling
  • Graphic design in Canva
  • Research and citation
  • Cash handling
  • Event planning

Soft skills selection committees value

  • Leadership
  • Reliability
  • Time management
  • Teamwork
  • Initiative
  • Mentoring younger students

Name software by its real name: Google Workspace, Microsoft Excel, Canva, Python or Fusion 360, and only if a bullet shows what you did with it. A second language goes under Languages with your level, such as Spanish (fluent) or French (conversational), rather than under Skills.

Honors, awards and test scores on a scholarship resume

Honors belong in Key Achievements, each with what it was, the level (school, district, state or national) and the year. A reviewer cannot judge a name alone, so add the field of competitors where you know it, such as 2nd of 48 entries. Follow the same rules you would use to write achievements on a resume: specific, dated and counted.

Where each honor or credential goes
ItemSectionHow to write it
Honor roll, dean's listKey Achievements, or a line on your Education entryThe number of semesters or terms, not each one separately
Competition placingsKey AchievementsPlace, field size, level and month: 1st of 30 teams, state science olympiad, 04/2026
AP examsEducationCourse name and score: AP Biology (4)
SAT or ACTEducationOnly when the award asks or the score helps you, with the test date
CPR, first aid, lifeguardCertificatesFull name, issuer and month: Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED, American Red Cross, 05/2026
Varsity letters, captaincyWork Experience entry for the sport, or Key AchievementsSport, seasons and role: Varsity Soccer, 3 seasons, captain in 2026

Where to put SAT, ACT and AP scores

Put test scores on the Education entry, after your GPA, so all of your academic numbers sit together. College Board scores AP Exams on a scale of 1 to 5, and many US colleges grant credit or placement for a 3 or higher, so list the scores that reach that level. If a score is weak and the award does not ask for it, leave it off.

Sample entry: honors for a high school senior

Key Achievements

  • 2nd of 48 entries, regional science fair (03/2026): a low-cost water-quality sensor tested on the Boise River.
  • Honor roll for all 6 semesters at Boise High School.
  • Varsity swimming: 3 seasons, team captain in 2026.

How to list GPA, AP courses and class rank

Follow the usual rules for listing education on a resume: degree or diploma, school, city and the graduation date, marked as expected while you are still enrolled. Unlike a job resume, a scholarship resume shows your GPA in almost every case, since many awards set a minimum. Say whether it is weighted or unweighted, and give both if your school reports both.

Add class rank only if your school publishes it and it helps you. College applicants list their college first and drop high school after the first year, unless a high school honor is still their strongest. Graduate applicants add the thesis or capstone title and any research advisor the program would recognize.

Sample education entry: high school senior

Education

High School Diploma (expected)06/2027
Boise High School | Boise, ID

GPA 3.92 unweighted, 4.31 weighted. AP Calculus AB (5), AP U.S. History (4), AP English Language and Composition (5).

Athletic, STEM and graduate school scholarship resumes

An athletic scholarship resume adds your sport, position, varsity seasons, key stats and team honors, and it still needs your grades, because college coaches need you to be academically eligible. According to the NCAA, Division I requires 16 core-course credits, 10 of them (7 in English, math or science) finished before your seventh semester, and a core-course GPA of at least 2.3; Division II requires 16 core courses and a 2.2 core-course GPA. Both divisions ask you to register with the NCAA Eligibility Center, so name your registration in your objective once it is done.

Don't

Dedicated athlete looking for a soccer scholarship to play at the next level.

Do

Goalkeeper with 3 varsity seasons and a 0.84 goals-against average in 2026, registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center. 3.6 GPA, planning to study kinesiology.

Coaches and committees both look for the stat, the eligibility status and the grades in the first 2 lines.

A STEM scholarship resume puts science fairs, coding projects, robotics, math competitions and summer programs up front, each with what you built or tested and the result. A graduate school scholarship or fellowship resume reads more like an academic record: research experience, lab methods, posters and any publications come before unrelated jobs, and the summary names your research interest. Pair it with a strong academic personal statement that explains the question you want to study.

A short list of clubs, or no job yet, still leaves plenty to write about. Common App's own guidance counts family responsibilities, jobs, internships and volunteer work as activities, and a committee will read them the same way.

  • Family responsibilities: caring for siblings or a relative, with hours a week, listed under Work Experience.
  • Informal work: babysitting, lawn care or helping in a family business, with clients or hours.
  • School roles: peer tutor, office aide or library assistant, with how many students or periods.
  • Online courses and summer programs: under Education, with the provider and the hours or credits.

Your resume is one part of a packet. Give your recommenders a copy before they write, since a letter of recommendation that repeats your own numbers backs them up, and use this guide to winning scholarships to plan deadlines and essays around it.

Scholarship resume FAQ

What should a scholarship resume include?

Your education with GPA, your work experience, your activities and leadership roles, honors, volunteering, skills and any certificates. Open with a short objective that names your field of study, and keep personal details to your name, city, phone and email.

How long should a scholarship resume be?

Use 1 page for high school and college students. Graduate school applicants with research, posters or teaching experience can use 2 pages if the program allows it. If the scholarship sets its own page limit, that limit wins.

Should I put my GPA on a scholarship resume?

Yes, in almost every case, because many scholarships set a minimum GPA and reviewers check it first. Write it to 2 decimals and say whether it is weighted or unweighted. If it falls below the award's minimum, the scholarship is probably not the right fit.

Can I use the same resume for every scholarship application?

Keep one master version, but adjust it for each award. Rewrite the objective to match the scholarship's purpose, and move the entries that answer its selection criteria to the top of each section. A service award and a STEM award should not open with the same entry.

Should I include middle school activities on a scholarship resume?

Only when the activity continued into high school. In that case, give its full start date to show how long you have stuck with it, such as piano since 2019. Middle school honors on their own usually make way for newer results.

Where do volunteer hours go on a scholarship resume?

In a Volunteer Experience section, with each role's total hours or hours a week and its dates. If service is the focus of the award, place that section right after Education so a reviewer sees it before your jobs.

Should I put SAT or ACT scores on a scholarship resume?

Only if the scholarship asks for them or the score strengthens your application. Add the score and the test month to your Education entry, next to your GPA, and leave off a weak score the award does not require.

Should I mention financial need on my scholarship resume?

No. Need-based scholarships collect that information through their own forms or your essay. Keep the resume on what you have done, and if family duties or a job took time away from school activities, list them as entries with their hours.

What makes an athletic scholarship resume different?

It adds a sports section with your position, varsity seasons, stats and team honors, and it notes your NCAA Eligibility Center registration. Grades still matter: Division I asks for a core-course GPA of at least 2.3.
