5 Graduate Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Employers hiring new graduates check the degree, the month you finished it and the closest thing you have to real work. Use these examples and the guide below to turn internships, capstones and part-time jobs into bullets with numbers, and to place your degree, GPA and first credential where a recruiter looks.

Graduation changes what your resume has to do. As a student you applied for a shift or a summer internship; now you are competing for a full-time role, sometimes against people who have done it for 2 years. Employers hiring new graduates know your history is short. They look for your degree and when you earned it, the internship or job that came closest to the work, and school results that carry a number, such as a capstone delivered to a real client or a team you led.

How to Write a Graduate Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Use the reverse-chronological format on 1 page, with Education above Work Experience until you have about a year of full-time work in your field.
  • Open with 2 to 3 lines that name the job from the posting, your degree with its month and year, and 1 result with a number.
  • Write internships, capstones and part-time jobs as verb-first bullets that end in a count, a dollar figure or something people used.
  • Choose 6 to 8 skills the job ad asks for, and back each software name with a bullet or a class project that used it.
  • Add an exam or certificate you have passed, such as the FE exam, under Certificates with its issuer and the month.
  • Keep your GPA if it is 3.5 or higher, then test the file with an ATS resume checker before you apply.

What employers look for in a graduate resume

In NACE's Job Outlook 2026 Spring Update, employers said they most want to see that candidates can work in a team, solve problems and communicate effectively. NACE adds that listing those skills is not enough: employers want examples. On a new graduate's resume, the examples come from internships, capstones, research and part-time jobs, each written with what you produced.

A recruiter hiring graduates starts with your degree and its date, then looks for similar work and what came of it. Build the page from these sections, named as the resume designs print them:

  • Name, contact details and a headline with the job you are applying for
  • 2 to 3 lines of objective or summary under the headline, printed without a section title
  • Education, above Work Experience during your first year out
  • Work Experience: internships, co-ops, campus and part-time jobs
  • Skills, with the software you used in a job or a class
  • Certificates, for any exam or certificate you have passed
  • Optional extras: Languages, Interests, and either Key Achievements (honors, awards) or Volunteer Experience

Best format for a graduate resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format inside each section: newest entry first, each with the title, employer or school, city and MM/YYYY dates. For a recent graduate it puts the degree and the latest internship in the top third of the page. A skills-first layout does not hide a short history from a recruiter; it only makes the dates harder to find.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a graduate resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Keep it to 1 page, even with a master's degree. A bachelor's degree, 2 internships and a part-time job fit with room for skills and a certificate. Once you have held a full-time job in your field for about a year, move Education below Work Experience and cut it to the degree line.

Graduate resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page for a bachelor's, associate or master's graduate
Section orderEducation first in your first year after graduating, then Work Experience
Graduation dateThe month and year the degree was conferred, such as 05/2026
HeadlineThe job title from the posting, plus your degree if the posting names one
EmailA personal address you will keep, since some schools close student accounts after graduation
Personal detailsNo birth date, high school year or Social Security number

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo, and the line under your name does more work as a city, a phone number and a LinkedIn URL whose job titles match your resume.

Graduate resume objective vs. summary

Use one test: after 6 months or more of full-time work in your field, write a summary; before that, write an objective. Both run 2 to 3 lines at the top. A graduate resume objective names the role you want, your degree with its date and 1 piece of proof with a number, while a summary leads with the job you hold now.

Graduate resume summary or objective formula

Job title with a degree from school (MM/YYYY) and length of internship, co-op or job in area. The result you would explain first in an interview, with a number. The next step you are taking: an exam, a certificate or a start date.

Example

Operations analyst with a B.A. in Economics from the University of New Mexico (12/2025) and 8 months of freight pricing and scheduling work. Rebuilt a lane-cost spreadsheet that priced 220 routes and flagged 31 that lost money. Completing the Google Data Analytics Certificate in 12/2026.

Don't

Recent graduate with a strong work ethic and excellent communication skills, eager to apply my knowledge in a dynamic organization.

Do

Economics graduate (05/2026) with a 12-week revenue internship at a regional hospital system. Built a weekly claim denial report in Excel and SQL that the billing team used to resubmit 140 claims. Applying for a junior financial analyst role.

The rewrite gives the degree date, the internship length, the tools and a result other people relied on.

How to write internships and part-time jobs on a graduate resume

Give an internship, co-op or campus job the same layout as a full-time role: title, employer, city, MM/YYYY dates and 2 to 4 bullets. Start each bullet with a verb and finish it with something you can count. Recruiters compare graduates on the achievements on their resumes; the duty list from an internship posting reads the same for every intern who held it.

Numbers that prove a graduate's experience
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Internship or co-opRecords, reports, people who used your workCleaned 6,000 vendor records in Salesforce before a CRM migration, leaving fewer than 50 duplicates.
Capstone or senior designClient, team size, what was adoptedLed a 4-person capstone team that built a delivery model a food bank now uses to plan 3 weekly routes.
Thesis or researchSample size, methods, where you presentedAnalyzed 410 survey responses in Stata and presented the findings at a regional undergraduate research conference.
Part-time jobShifts, customers, cash, people trainedTrained 5 new hires on the register and opening checklist over 2 summers at a 20-employee garden center.
Student organizationMembers, budget, events, savingsManaged the $9,500 annual budget of a 120-member engineering society and cut catering costs 18% by moving to 2 vendors.
Tutoring or teachingStudents, hours, termsTutored 12 calculus students a week, 6 hours a week, for 3 semesters.

Here is a graduate 8 months into a first job, with the internship from college underneath. The current role gets 3 bullets and the internship 2, and every line carries its own number.

Sample entry: operations analyst with a college internship

Work Experience

Junior Operations Analyst02/2026 – Present
Tessaloon Freight | Albuquerque, NM
  • Rebuilt the lane-cost spreadsheet for 220 trucking routes and flagged 31 that lost money, which the sales team repriced in 08/2026.
  • Pull on-time delivery data every Monday and send a 1-page report to 4 terminal managers.
  • Cut the time to quote a new customer from 2 days to 4 hours with an Excel pricing template now used by 6 sales reps.
Member Services Intern06/2025 – 08/2025
Brindlecap Credit Union | Albuquerque, NM
  • Answered about 35 member calls a day on the loan line during a 10-week internship.
  • Sorted 1,300 abandoned loan applications in a pivot table by the step where members quit, and the lending manager rewrote 2 follow-up emails from it.

Don't

Assisted the marketing team with various projects.

Do

Wrote 14 product emails for a 9,000-subscriber list during a summer marketing internship; 3 beat the team's average open rate.

The rewrite shows the output, the audience size and how the work compared.

Don't

Completed a senior capstone project in mechanical engineering.

Do

Designed the cooling loop for a 5-person senior design team's electric go-kart, which finished a 20-minute endurance test without overheating.

A capstone is work: name your part, the team size and the test it passed.

Skills and software for a graduate resume

NACE's Job Outlook 2026 found that 70% of employers use skill-based hiring, so match your Skills section to the posting wherever the match is true. Choose 6 to 8 of the most important skills to put on your resume for that job, and only ones a bullet, your coursework or your capstone already proves.

Hard skills new graduates can prove

  • Excel (pivot tables, XLOOKUP)
  • Data analysis
  • SQL queries
  • Python or R for analysis
  • Statistical software (SPSS, Stata)
  • Research and literature review
  • Technical and report writing
  • Presentation design
  • Project scheduling
  • CRM data entry

Soft skills employers check in graduates

  • Teamwork on shared deadlines
  • Problem-solving
  • Written communication
  • Taking feedback
  • Time management
  • Initiative

Write software by its exact name and only where you used it to produce something: Excel, SQL, Python, Tableau, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Adobe InDesign or Salesforce. A class counts when it ended in a deliverable you can describe, such as a regression in Stata or a dashboard in Tableau. Add relevant coursework on your resume as 1 line under your degree, limited to 3 to 5 courses the job depends on.

Licensing exams and certificates to list after graduation

Put each exam or certificate you have passed under Certificates, with the issuer and the month; the rules for certifications on a resume are the same in every field. For a new graduate, the most useful are the first step toward a license and short certificates that prove a tool. NCEES describes the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam as generally the first step toward a professional engineer (P.E.) license, designed for recent graduates and students close to finishing an engineering degree.

Exams and certificates new graduates can list
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examNCEESA 110-question computer-based exam, offered year-round, for students close to finishing or recent graduates of an EAC/ABET-accredited engineering degree.
Engineer in Training (EIT)Your state engineering board, such as the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land SurveyorsA passed FE exam and a degree from a board-approved program. Texas asks applicants to wait until the degree is conferred and charges $15.
Google Data Analytics CertificateGoogle, on CourseraNo degree or experience required. Google puts it at about 3 months at 20 hours a week, or 6 months at 10.
Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)Project Management Institute (PMI)A 150-question exam in 180 minutes. Check PMI's current eligibility rules before you apply.

How to list the FE exam before you hold an EIT

If you passed the FE exam before your degree was conferred, list the exam under Certificates with NCEES, your discipline and the month you passed. Add the EIT line once your state board issues it, and only then put EIT after the job title in your headline. Until the degree is conferred, an engineering student resume is the better fit.

Sample Certificates section: engineering graduate after the FE exam

Certificates

  • Engineer in Training (EIT), Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, 07/2026
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, Civil, NCEES, passed 04/2026
  • Google Project Management Certificate, Google, 01/2026

How to list your degree, GPA and honors on a graduate resume

Write the degree the way your diploma names it, then the school, its city and the month and year it was conferred. Beyond the basics of listing education on a resume, a graduate gets 1 extra line that later applicants drop: GPA, Latin honors, a thesis or a capstone.

Add your GPA when it is 3.5 or higher, or when the employer requests it. NACE reports that employers have moved toward skill-based hiring and away from screening on GPA, so a strong bullet outweighs a decimal point. Latin honors such as cum laude go on the degree line exactly as your school awarded them.

An associate degree gets its own entry with the college, its city and the date. If you are now working toward a bachelor's, list that first as in progress with its expected month, then the associate degree beneath it. A master's graduate lists the master's first and keeps the bachelor's to 1 line.

Sample education entry: graduate with a capstone

Education

B.A. in Economics12/2025
University of New Mexico | Albuquerque, NM

GPA 3.6. Capstone: a freight-rate forecasting model for a regional trucking company.

Graduate resumes with no experience, for rotational programs or after a master's

With no internship or job in your field, use an entry-level resume layout: an objective, Education near the top, then the work closest to the job, paid or not. Each of these can fill Work Experience or a line under your degree:

  • Capstone or senior design project: the client, your role, the team size and what was delivered.
  • Research assistant or thesis work: the sample, the method and where you presented it.
  • Part-time and summer jobs in any field: shifts, customers served, cash handled or people trained.
  • Club or student government roles: members, budget, events run or money raised.
  • Volunteer Experience: the hours and what they produced, such as meals served or returns filed.

Don't

Motivated recent graduate looking for an opportunity to grow my skills and gain experience.

Do

Communication graduate (05/2026) applying for a marketing assistant role. Ran the Instagram account of a 300-member student union and grew it from 900 to 2,400 followers in 1 school year. Fluent in Spanish.

With no job in the field, the objective still names the role, a result and something the posting values.

For a leadership development or rotational program, move leadership up: the team or group you ran, its size and a decision you made with a result. Keep the list of tracks or locations you would accept for the application form or the cover letter. A master's graduate with no full-time job follows the same layout, with a graduate assistantship or research post under Work Experience.

Target recent graduate jobs whose requirements name your degree, and send each one with an entry-level cover letter that opens on the role and your strongest number.

Graduate resume FAQ

When should I move Education below Work Experience on a graduate resume?

After about a year of full-time work in your field. Until then, your degree is the newest and most relevant line you have, so it goes first. Once a full-time job gives you 3 or more results with numbers, Work Experience leads and Education shrinks to the degree, school and date.

Can I apply for jobs before my degree is conferred?

Yes. List the degree with the word Expected and the month, such as B.S. in Biology, Expected 12/2026, and change it to the conferral date as soon as it is official. Many employers recruit graduates months before they start, so applying in your final term is normal.

Should I list Latin honors or my GPA on a graduate resume?

List Latin honors whenever you earned them, on the degree line, as your school awarded them. Add the GPA only if it is 3.5 or higher or the application requests it, and drop it once you have a year of full-time results to show.

How long can I call myself a recent graduate on a resume?

Until your work says more than your degree. After about a year in a full-time job in your field, describe yourself by that job title in the headline and summary, and let the graduation date speak for itself on the Education line.

Should a graduate resume include part-time jobs unrelated to my degree?

Yes, when they show reliability, customers or responsibility, which most do. Keep them to 1 or 2 bullets each with a number, such as shifts covered or people trained, and put the internship or job closest to the role first within Work Experience.

Should I put the FE exam on my resume if I do not have my EIT yet?

Yes. A passed FE exam goes under Certificates with NCEES, the discipline and the month. Write EIT after your title only once your state board issues it.

How do I write a resume for a leadership development program?

Lead with evidence that you have run something: a team, a club, a project or a shift, with its size and a result. Keep 1 page, list your degree and date first, and use the application or cover letter for which rotations or cities you would accept.

What goes on a master's graduate resume with no work experience?

Your master's degree first, then the bachelor's in 1 line, then a thesis, a graduate assistantship or a research post written as Work Experience with numbers. Add the methods and software you used, and write an objective that names the job you want.
