17 Intern Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Internship coordinators read an intern resume for your major, your graduation month, the term you can work and 1 or 2 results that look like their team's work. Use these examples and the guide below to shape 1 page for your field, write an objective and give class, campus and intern work real numbers.

Intern resume example

An internship is often the first time you need a real resume, and nobody expects it to be full. Recruiters start with what you study, when you finish school and which months you can work. They also want signs you can do the job, and a class project, campus job or volunteer role can supply them. Early experience can still look thin. A clean 1-page layout, a short objective and bullets with numbers go a long way.

How to Write an Intern Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep it to 1 page in reverse-chronological order, with Education at the top while you are still enrolled.
  • Start with a 2- to 3-line objective naming your year, your major, the term you can work and your best result so far.
  • Tailor the top of the page to the field: the courses, the first bullets and the skills an event, IT or research team checks first.
  • Give every bullet a count from your own work, such as guests checked in, tickets closed, samples logged or posts published.
  • Add your GPA when an employer requests it or when it is 3.5 or higher, and leave it off otherwise.
  • Check the finished PDF with an ATS resume checker before you upload it to a company's career portal.

What internship recruiters look for in an intern resume

An internship coordinator or campus recruiter reads your resume with 4 questions in mind: what you study, when you graduate, when you can start, and whether anything you have done already resembles the team's work. The answers to the first 3 sit in your objective and your Education entry. The fourth is what your bullets are for.

Grades carry less weight than many students expect. NACE's Job Outlook 2026 survey found that 42% of employers screen candidates by GPA, down from 73% in 2019, which leaves more of the decision to what your projects and jobs show. Build the page from these sections:

  • Name, city and state, phone, a professional email and a LinkedIn URL if your profile is current
  • Objective or summary: 2 to 3 lines below your name, with no heading above it
  • Education, with your major and expected graduation month
  • Work Experience: past internships, research positions, campus jobs and part-time work
  • Skills, with the software you have actually used
  • Certificates, only those that fit the field
  • Volunteer Experience if you volunteer regularly, otherwise Key Achievements (never both), plus Languages if you speak another

Best format for an intern resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format and place Education above Work Experience while you are in school, because your major and graduation month are what a coordinator checks first. Inside each section, the newest entry goes first. Give a 10-week summer internship full start and end months too, such as 06/2026 to 08/2026, so its length shows at a glance.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for an intern resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Fit it on 1 page, even with 2 or 3 internships behind you. When it runs long, cut high school details first, then trim jobs outside the field to 1 bullet each. Education moves below Work Experience once you have graduated and hold a full-time job.

Intern resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page, including for a third or fourth internship
Section orderEducation first until you graduate, then Work Experience on top
Job title lineThe exact title from your offer, such as Marketing Intern or Research Assistant
Graduation dateMonth and year, marked expected until you finish
Role datesStart and end month as MM/YYYY, or Present for a role still running
Photo, age and addressNo photo, as on most US and Canadian resumes; leave off your birth date and street address
File typePDF, unless the career portal asks for a Word document

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. A city and state are all the address an intern resume needs: they tell a coordinator whether you would need housing for a summer program or could commute to the office.

Intern resume objective vs. summary

Write an objective unless you have completed 2 or more internships or a full co-op term; most intern resumes need one. It names the internship you want and the evidence you already have, and our internship resume objective examples show it for different majors. Once you have that experience, a 2- to 3-line summary that leads with your strongest internship result reads better.

Intern resume objective formula

Year and major at school, available term and hours. Your best result from an internship, class, job or club, with a number. Seeking a field internship to what you will help the team do.

Example

Agricultural business junior at Montana State University, available full time in summer 2027. Wrote 9 seed product sheets used by 3 sales agronomists during a co-op marketing internship. Seeking an agribusiness sales internship to support grower outreach.

Don't

Motivated student seeking an internship to gain real-world experience and grow my skills.

Do

Public health sophomore available 15 hours a week this spring. Surveyed 120 residence hall students on sleep habits for a class project and presented the results to campus wellness staff. Seeking a community health internship.

The rewrite says what you study, when you can work and what you have already done with it.

How to tailor an intern resume to the field

An events coordinator and an IT manager read the same sections but look for different proof. Keep your Education entry, dates and job list the same for every application, and change 3 things per field: the courses you name, the first bullet under each job and the skills list. The table shows what each field tends to check first and the kind of count that answers it.

What each internship field checks first
FieldWhat reviewers check firstExample bullet
Supply chain and operationsSpreadsheet work, orders, inventory, accuracyAudited 260 purchase orders against receiving logs and flagged 17 mismatches.
EducationGrade levels, group sizes, lessons ledLed 12 small-group reading sessions for 5 second graders.
Environmental scienceField and lab methods, samples, sites, softwareCollected and logged 96 stream samples from 8 sites for a watershed survey.
Event planning and hospitalityGuest counts, vendors, budgets, service volumeRan check-in for 450 guests at a 2-day conference.
IT and softwareTickets, users, languages, response timesClosed 180 help desk tickets in 12 weeks with a median first response under 2 hours.
Journalism and PRPublished pieces, deadlines, reach, media contactsDrafted 22 Instagram posts that reached 41,000 accounts over 10 weeks.
Research and legalSources, records, responses, citation accuracyCoded 340 open-ended survey responses in NVivo for a 3-person faculty lab.

How to write internship bullets with numbers

Past internships, research assistant roles, campus jobs and part-time work all sit under Work Experience, written the way you would list work experience on a resume for any job: title, employer, city, dates. Give the role nearest the posting 3 to 4 bullets and anything else 1 to 2. Open each bullet with a verb and include the scale: farms, guests, tickets, posts or dollars.

Here is how one agricultural business student's entries read once the counts are added. The internship carries the page, and the seasonal job keeps 2 bullets that show reliability with customers and equipment.

Sample entry: marketing internship at a grain co-op and a seasonal job

Work Experience

Agribusiness Marketing Intern06/2026 – 08/2026
Brackenhay Grain Cooperative | Belgrade, MT
  • Called 62 member farms about fall seed orders and logged each answer in Excel for the agronomy manager.
  • Wrote 9 product sheets on winter wheat and barley varieties for 3 sales agronomists to hand out at field days.
  • Ran sign-in and lunch counts for 2 field days attended by 140 growers.
Rental Technician (Seasonal)12/2024 – 03/2026
Marrowind Ski Rentals | Big Sky, MT
  • Fitted skis and boots for about 70 renters a day on weekends and holiday weeks across 2 winter seasons.
  • Tracked 600 rental sets in the shop's inventory sheet and flagged 38 for repair before opening day.

Cleaned the nonprofit's donor list in HubSpot, merging 1,900 records into 1,420 and cutting bounced emails from 11% to 3%.

Name 1 project you owned, the tool and the result, even if it was a small part of the team's work.

Don't

Shadowed the marketing team and attended meetings.

Do

Sat in on 8 weekly campaign reviews and wrote the recap email the team sent to 3 regional managers.

Intern skills and software for your resume

Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that the posting names, then drop any skill that no bullet or Education line backs up. Supervisors expect to teach an intern their systems, so they read the list for a starting point, not for mastery.

Hard skills for interns

  • Spreadsheet analysis
  • Data entry and cleanup
  • Research and source citation
  • Report and memo writing
  • Slide decks
  • Social media scheduling
  • Survey design
  • Basic SQL queries
  • Event logistics
  • Customer and client support

Soft skills internship supervisors value

  • Taking feedback and acting on it
  • Meeting deadlines beside a course load
  • Clear professional email
  • Asking questions early
  • Teamwork
  • Reliability

Each field has its own short list of tools. Business and operations interns name Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets; designers name Adobe Illustrator, InDesign or Figma; research interns name R, SPSS or NVivo; IT interns name the ticketing system and the languages they code in. Write a tool only if you could work in it on day 1, and mention it in a bullet or project line as well, so the reader sees what you did with it.

How to list coursework, projects and GPA on an intern resume

An internship coordinator reads your Education entry before anything else, so write it out in full: the degree, the school's official name, its city and your dates, the usual order for listing education on a resume. Add your GPA when an employer requests it or when it is 3.5 or higher. Then name 1 to 4 classes the internship's duties draw on; relevant coursework on your resume means the courses this team would recognize, not every class on your transcript.

Where class projects go without a Projects section

Without a Projects heading, a class project goes in the note line under your degree, in Key Achievements, or in a bullet under a research or campus job if you did it for one. Write it like a job bullet, with what you built, who it was for and a number.

Sample education entry: student with a class project

Education

B.S. in Agricultural Business08/2024 – Present
Montana State University | Bozeman, MT

Expected graduation 05/2028. GPA 3.5. Coursework: Agricultural Marketing, Farm and Ranch Management, Applied Statistics. Project: built a break-even model with 3 classmates for a 40-head cow-calf operation.

Certificates that help an intern resume

Most internships require no certificate, and a resume with none is normal. Add one when the field uses it, and list certifications on your resume under Certificates, naming who issued each one and the month you earned it. Write each one under its exact name: an OSHA 10-Hour class, for example, ends with a course completion card, and OSHA states that none of its Outreach courses is a certification.

Certificates interns often add, and what each takes
CertificateIssued byWhat it takes
Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps)Microsoft, through CertiportPass the Excel Associate exam through Certiport. Useful for business, finance and operations internships.
OSHA 10-Hour (General Industry or Construction)An OSHA-authorized Outreach trainerComplete the 10-hour awareness class on common job hazards; the trainer issues a course completion card. Useful for environmental, field, warehouse and construction internships.
CITI Program Human Subjects ResearchCITI ProgramComplete the Biomedical or Social-Behavioral-Educational track, which CITI aims at anyone researching with human participants, students included. Useful for lab and survey research.
Sample Certificates section: agricultural business student

Certificates

  • Microsoft Office Specialist: Excel Associate (Microsoft 365 Apps), Microsoft, 03/2026
  • OSHA 10-Hour General Industry, OSHA-authorized trainer, 05/2026

First internship resumes for freshmen, sophomores and international students

In your first or second year, your Education entry, a class project and anything you did every week carry the page. Use an entry-level resume layout, and give each item the numbers a job would get:

  • Class and lab projects: what you built or measured, the team size and the result, in the Education note line.
  • Part-time and summer jobs: customers, shifts, cash handled or people trained, under Work Experience.
  • Club roles: members, events and budget, as a Volunteer Experience entry or a line in Key Achievements.
  • Personal work: a website, a data set or an app you built, as a bullet that names the tool.

Don't

First-year student with no experience looking for any internship.

Do

First-year computer science student seeking an IT support internship for summer 2027. Set up 14 donated laptops for a church youth program and answered tech questions for its 30 members.

A first internship objective still needs 1 piece of proof and 1 named field.

International students on an F-1 visa usually intern through Curricular Practical Training (CPT). DHS's Study in the States says CPT must be an integral part of your curriculum, is authorized by your designated school official in SEVIS, and that 1 year or more of full-time CPT ends eligibility for post-completion OPT. On the resume, it is an ordinary Work Experience entry with your title, the employer and the dates.

Paid, unpaid or for course credit, an internship goes under Work Experience with the title you held. Put anything that needs explaining, such as moving into a new field through an internship, in a cover letter for an internship, and keep the resume to the evidence.

Intern resume FAQ

Can an intern resume be 2 pages?

No. Even with 2 or 3 past internships, a coordinator comparing students for the same term expects 1 page, so cut high school details and jobs outside the field before you shrink the font or the margins.

Does GPA matter for internships?

Less than it used to. NACE's Job Outlook 2026 survey found that 42% of employers screen candidates by GPA, down from 73% in 2019. List yours if it is 3.5 or higher or the employer requests it, and expect some application forms to ask for it anyway.

How do I list an internship I am still doing?

Write the start month and Present, such as 06/2026 to Present, and use present-tense verbs for its bullets. Once it ends, switch to the end month and past tense, and add the result of your final project.

Should I write Intern in my job title?

Yes, if that was your title. Copy the title from your offer, such as Finance Intern or Software Engineering Intern, so it matches the employer's records, and let the bullets show how far the work went. Never upgrade it to Analyst or Associate.

How do I show a return offer on my resume?

Add 1 line to the internship's last bullet, such as Received a full-time return offer for 07/2027. Many employers hire from their intern class: in NACE's 2026 Internship and Co-op Survey, the conversion rate for 2024-25 interns was 63.1%, so a return offer tells the next reader the employer wanted you back.

What should a freshman put on an intern resume?

Your college program with its expected graduation month, 1 to 4 courses, a class project, any part-time or summer job, and 1 or 2 club or volunteer roles, each with a number. High school awards can stay for the first year, then give way to college work.

Which certificates help an intern resume?

Only ones the field uses. An Excel certification suits business and operations roles, an OSHA 10-Hour card suits field and warehouse work, and CITI human subjects training suits research labs. Give each one its issuer and month in the Certificates section, and skip unrelated online badges.

Do I need a cover letter for an internship?

Yes, unless the posting says not to send one. A brief letter of about 3 paragraphs lets you name the term you are applying for, why this team, and the 1 project or job that best matches the work.
