Programmer resume example

Programmers write the code that keeps a business's software doing its job, then fix and extend that code as the rules around it change. Before an interview, a programming lead checks which languages and databases you work in every day, what kind of programs you have maintained, and how carefully you test before a change goes live. The proof is concrete: defects fixed that stayed fixed, batch jobs that finish hours sooner, tests added, and old reports rebuilt in a language still in use.

How to Write a Programmer Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Put your newest job first and keep to 1 page, moving to 2 only with 10+ years and several systems to describe.
  • Open with 2 to 3 lines giving your languages, the kind of software you maintain and 1 result with a number.
  • Count something in every bullet: defects closed, runtimes cut, tests added or hours of manual work removed, each with its base.
  • Pick 6 to 8 skills and the exact languages, databases and tools from the job ad, then show each one at work inside a bullet.
  • List certifications such as AWS Certified Developer (Associate) or PCAP under Certificates with the issuer and the month and year.
  • Keep personal details off the page and test the file with an ATS resume checker before you apply.

What hiring managers look for in a programmer resume

A programming lead reads your resume to find out what you can be handed on day 1: which code base, in which language, and how much checking it will need. The BLS lists writing programs in languages such as C++ and Java, updating and expanding existing programs, and testing programs to fix faulty lines of code as core duties. O*NET adds correcting errors and rechecking the program until it gives the right results, and documenting each revision with comments so others can follow it.

Those tasks give you your bullets. Set them out in sections a parser and a person can both follow:

  • Your name with a headline like Programmer Analyst, C# and SQL Server, then email, phone, city and a GitHub or portfolio URL
  • A short opening summary of 2 to 3 lines, which needs no heading
  • Work Experience, starting with your current job
  • Skills, with your languages, databases and tools
  • Certificates, if you hold any
  • Education
  • If space allows: Languages, Interests, and Key Achievements or Volunteer Experience

Best format for a programmer resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format, which puts your current job first and works back, with MM/YYYY dates, title, employer and location on each entry. Programming careers usually step up from programmer to programmer analyst, senior programmer and lead, and this order lets a reader follow those steps and the languages that came with them. A combination format, with skills above a shorter history, suits only someone whose first paid programming job is still ahead.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a programmer resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Stay on 1 page for your first 10 years in the job. A second page makes sense for a senior programmer who has maintained several large systems or moved a team off an old platform, provided page 1 still holds the 2 latest jobs and the languages the posting asks for.

Programmer resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 only after 10+ years across several systems
DatesMM/YYYY for every job, with Present marking your current one
Job title lineThe title on your offer letter, such as Programmer Analyst, with the main language added only if the posting leads with it
Links1 GitHub or portfolio URL in the contact line, written out in full so it survives printing
FontOne readable font at 10.5 to 12 pt throughout; keep monospace fonts for your code, not your resume
Personal detailsLeave off your birth date and marital status
File typePDF by default, or .docx when the application portal asks for it

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Put a working link to your code in the contact line instead.

Programmer resume summary vs. objective

Use one test: if you have been paid to write code, write a resume summary that names your languages, the type of software and your best result. If your first programming job is still ahead, write an objective that names the role you want and the strongest proof you have, such as an internship or a working project. Either way, take its number from a bullet further down, so the top of the page and the body agree.

Programmer resume summary formula

Title with X years maintaining type of software in languages and database. Your best result: a faster job, fewer defects or hours saved, with a number. Certification, if the posting names one.

Example

Programmer analyst with 7 years maintaining banking and manufacturing software in C#, Python and SQL Server. Cut a nightly interest batch for 310,000 accounts from 260 to 48 minutes. PCAP certified since 2024.

Don't

Passionate programmer with strong coding skills and a love of solving problems, seeking to join an innovative team.

Do

Programmer with 4 years maintaining a hospital billing system in Java and Oracle Database. Cleared a backlog of 90 open defects in 8 months and wrote the on-call runbook the night operators use.

The rewrite swaps adjectives for a system, a language, a backlog and a deliverable.

How to write programmer work experience bullets with numbers

Give your current job 3 to 4 bullets and older jobs 1 to 3, each opening with a verb and ending on what changed. Programming work leaves a record in run logs, ticket queues, test reports and commit history, so most bullets can carry a count with its base: how many records, how many minutes, how many defects out of how many. Write achievements on your resume rather than the duties from your job posting.

Numbers that prove programming work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Batch jobs and performanceRuntime before and after, records processed, queries tunedTuned 9 SQL Server queries in the month-end statement job, which now finishes 3 hours earlier.
DefectsTickets closed, priority, reopen rateClosed 112 defect tickets in 2025, 15 of them priority 1, with a reopen rate under 4%.
TestingTests written, coverage, regressions caughtWrote 260 JUnit tests for the pricing module and caught 11 regressions before release.
Legacy codePrograms converted, platforms retiredConverted 18 COBOL reports to Python and retired the mainframe job that ran them.
IntegrationsInterfaces built, partners, records per dayBuilt 4 REST interfaces to a shipping carrier's API, moving 2,500 labels a day off a manual screen.
Documentation and supportPrograms documented, people trained, on-call loadDocumented 30 batch programs and trained 3 junior programmers to support them on call.

Here is how one programmer analyst's last 2 jobs read with those counts in place.

Sample entry: programmer analyst at a credit union

Work Experience

Programmer Analyst04/2022 – Present
Tolvenmark Credit Union | Dayton, OH
  • Rewrote the nightly loan-interest batch in C# and SQL Server, cutting its run for 310,000 accounts from 260 to 48 minutes.
  • Added 420 xUnit tests to the loan payment service ahead of the 2025 core upgrade, raising line coverage from 38% to 71%.
  • Fixed 37 defects reported by branch staff in 2 quarters, each traced to its root cause in the ticket notes.
  • Built an XML feed that sends 1,900 new-member records a month to the card processor, replacing a manual upload.
Programmer07/2019 – 03/2022
Hethermoor Tool & Die | Kettering, OH
  • Wrote 22 Transact-SQL stored procedures for the inventory tracking system, covering 14,000 part numbers.
  • Automated the weekly scrap report in Python, removing 6 hours of manual data entry a week.

Don't

Responsible for fixing bugs in the company's software.

Do

Fixed 64 production defects in the order entry system in 2025, adding a regression test for each so none came back.

A count, a system and a reason to trust the fixes say what the first line only hints at.

Don't

Worked on updating old programs.

Do

Moved 5 Visual Basic 6 desktop tools into 1 C# web app used by 40 warehouse staff, and retired 2 aging servers.

Programming languages, skills and tools for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 technical skills for your resume that the job ad asks for and your bullets already show. Languages and databases go in Skills too, since most resume designs print tools there. The soft skills below are better proven by a bullet, such as a runbook you wrote or a requirement you clarified with an analyst, than by a tag.

Hard skills for programmers

  • Object-oriented programming
  • SQL queries and stored procedures
  • Debugging and root-cause analysis
  • Unit and regression testing
  • Code review
  • Version control with Git
  • REST API integration
  • Batch job and script automation
  • Legacy code maintenance
  • Technical documentation

Soft skills programming leads value

  • Close reading of specifications
  • Asking precise questions about requirements
  • Clear written explanations
  • Patience on long debugging sessions
  • Taking code review feedback well
  • Realistic estimates of your own work

In O*NET's technology list for computer programmers, C#, Oracle Java, Python, SQL, Microsoft SQL Server, JavaScript, Git, Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft Azure and Linux are marked in demand, and O*NET adds IBM DB2, Transact-SQL, Spring Boot and JUnit among its hot technologies. List only the ones you could write in during a technical interview, by the names the posting uses, and back each one with a bullet. If a database is most of your work, as on a SQL developer resume, name the dialect, such as Transact-SQL or PL/SQL, rather than SQL alone.

AWS, Python and vendor certifications for programmers

Programmers need no state license, and many work without any certification at all. The BLS notes that programmers may become certified in specific languages or in a vendor's products, and that some companies require certification in the products they use. When the posting names one you hold, list your certifications on your resume in a Certificates section, with the issuer and the month and year you earned each.

Programmer certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
AWS Certified Developer (Associate)Amazon Web Services1 exam of 130 minutes ($150); AWS recommends 1 or more years of hands-on experience. Valid for 3 years.
PCAP: Certified Associate Python ProgrammerPython Institute1 exam of 40 questions in 65 minutes, passed at 70%; no formal prerequisites, with PCEP recommended first. Valid for 5 years.
Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer AssociateMicrosoftEarned through exam AZ-204 and aimed at programmers with at least 2 years of experience. Microsoft has retired it and its renewal assessment, so it can no longer be earned.
A product certification your employer usesThe vendor of that productSet by each vendor; check its own certification page for the current exam and renewal rules before you list a date.

How to list a retired or time-limited certification

Write each credential with the month and year you passed it, and add the expiry where the issuer sets one, as AWS does after 3 years. A retired certification still counts as proof of what you learned, so keep it with its year, but put any current credential above it. Drop a lapsed one once its technology no longer appears in the jobs you apply for.

Sample Certificates section: a current and a retired credential

Certificates

  • PCAP: Certified Associate Python Programmer, Python Institute, 06/2024
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate, Microsoft, 09/2023

How to list a computer science degree or certificate program

The BLS names a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology, or a similar subject such as mathematics, as the usual way into the job, though some employers hire people with other degrees or proven experience in specific languages. Give the degree name, the school and its city, and your graduation month and year, the usual way of listing education on a resume. Show a GPA of 3.5 or above only while you are within 2 to 3 years of graduating.

The BLS also notes that programmers who work in fields such as healthcare or accounting may take classes in that field. A short business, finance or medical coding course belongs under Education too, since it tells a reader you understand the rules your code enforces. A certificate program in software development goes there as well, with the school that ran it and the month you finished.

Sample education entry

Education

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science05/2019
Wright State University | Dayton, OH

Minor in Mathematics. Senior design: a parking-availability app built by a 4-person team.

Entry-level and career-change programmer resumes

Without a paid programming job yet, follow an entry-level resume layout: an objective, then Education, then the code you have already written for someone. The BLS says employers may prefer candidates with internship experience, so an internship gets its own Work Experience entry with counts, like any job. The same holds for anyone landing a job in tech for the first time: code a reader can open counts for more than a list of courses.

  • Internships: programs written or changed, tickets closed and the language, as a Work Experience entry.
  • Capstone or senior design project: team size, the language and who used the result, under Education.
  • Personal or open-source projects: what the tool does and how many people use it, under Key Achievements, with the repository on GitHub.
  • Nonprofit or freelance work: a database or website you built for a club, church or small business, under Volunteer Experience.
  • Bootcamp or certificate program: the school, the hours or credits and the finishing month, under Education.

Don't

Recent computer science graduate looking for an opportunity to learn and grow as a programmer.

Do

Computer science graduate seeking a junior programmer role. Wrote SQL reports for a county records office during a 12-week internship and keeps 3 working Python tools on GitHub.

An objective still needs evidence a reader can check.

Moving in from teaching, accounting, lab work or IT support, list your jobs newest first as usual, then open with a summary that names the code you already write, such as grading scripts, Excel macros or SQL reports. Put your software development certificate under Education, and make the first bullets of your most recent job the most technical ones; a career-change resume and the teacher career change page show the layout. Your cover letter can then explain the move in 2 or 3 sentences, as our software engineer cover letter examples do for technical roles.

Programmer resume FAQ

Is a programmer resume different from a software developer resume?

Only a little. The BLS says programmers work closely with software developers and that in some businesses their duties overlap. A programmer resume leans on code written, maintained and tested from a specification, while a developer resume leans on design. Use the title you held, and match the posting's wording in your summary.

How many programming languages should I list on my resume?

List the 3 to 6 you could code in during a technical interview, starting with those the posting lists. Back each one with a bullet about what you built or fixed in it. Languages you used once in a class can stay off, or go in your Education line.

Should I put a GitHub link on a programmer resume?

Yes, if your pinned repositories are current and each has a README. Write the full URL in your contact line so it works on paper and in a PDF. If your recent code all belongs to an employer, leave the link off and let your bullets carry the proof.

Do I need a computer science degree to get a programmer job?

Not always. The BLS names a bachelor's degree in computer and information technology, or a similar subject, as the usual requirement, and notes that some employers hire people with other degrees or experience in specific languages. Without the degree, an internship, a certificate program and working code on GitHub do the most for you.

Which certifications help a programmer resume?

The ones the posting asks for, or that cover your employer's products. AWS Certified Developer (Associate) fits cloud work and PCAP fits Python roles. List each under Certificates with the issuer and date, and remember that the AWS credential is valid for 3 years, so add its expiry or renew it.

Should I list COBOL or other older languages on a programmer resume?

Yes, when the posting names them or the employer still runs software written in them. List each older language by name, such as COBOL or Visual Basic 6, and pair it with a bullet about the program you maintained or converted. If an older language never appears in the jobs you apply for, keep it to your Skills line or leave it off.

Should I list salary expectations on a programmer resume?

No. Pay belongs on the application form or in the interview, not on the page. As a benchmark, BLS figures put the median pay of computer programmers at $100,390 a year in May 2025; offers vary with your language stack, industry and region.
