MBA resume example

An MBA resume gets used at 2 turning points: when you apply to business school and when you finish and look for your next job. An admissions committee reads for how quickly you have grown. A recruiter reads for results in finance, product, consulting or operations that the degree builds on. Both usually expect 1 page, while you may have 5 or more years of work, 2 degrees and campus leadership to fit on it, so every line has to earn its place with the reader you are writing for.

How to Write an MBA Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep it to 1 page in reverse-chronological order, for a school application and for most post-MBA job searches.
  • Give every bullet a business result with its base: dollars saved, revenue added, people led, deal size or a rate before and after.
  • Show progression inside each job, such as a promotion, a bigger team or a larger budget, because both admissions readers and recruiters look for it.
  • List your MBA first under Education with the concentration and the graduation date, or the expected date while you are still enrolled.
  • Put a GMAT or GRE score on the MBA line only when it helps, and drop it once you have a post-MBA job.
  • Run the file through an ATS resume checker and check each program's own resume rules before you apply.

What admissions committees and recruiters look for in an MBA resume

Before business school, your reader is an admissions committee. Wharton's 2026-2027 application guide asks for a one-page resume that highlights your functional job skills, the breadth and depth of your experience, your leadership and management skills, and your potential for growth. SMU Cox asks for a results-oriented page that outlines your career progression and quantifies what you achieved instead of restating a job description.

After the degree, the reader is a recruiter or hiring manager in the function you want. Some employers prefer an MBA for management analyst roles, the BLS says, and the work is analyzing financial data, recommending changes and presenting them to management. Your bullets should show you already do that kind of work, at a scale the reader can picture. Both versions use the same sections:

  • Name, headline (for example, Senior Associate, Corporate Strategy | MBA) and contact details
  • A 2- to 3-line summary under the headline; it needs no heading of its own
  • Work Experience, current role first, with promotions shown inside each employer
  • Education, with the MBA above your bachelor's degree
  • Skills, with the software you use named exactly
  • Certificates, for a CFA level, a CPA or a PMP
  • Key Achievements or Volunteer Experience, plus Languages or Interests if there is room

Best format for an MBA resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: current job first, each with your title, the employer, its city, and the months you started and left, written MM/YYYY. Admissions committees read for how fast you moved up, and recruiters read for what you did most recently, so this order serves both. Even if you are using the MBA to change fields, keep this order and let the summary and your first bullets do the explaining.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for an MBA resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Hold it to 1 page. Wharton states the one-page rule outright, and a single page is the safe default for any program until its own instructions say otherwise. For a job search, 1 page works up to about 10 years of experience; past that, a second page is fine for senior roles, as long as page 1 carries your current job and the MBA.

MBA resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page for applications; 1 page for jobs until about 10 years in
DatesMM/YYYY on every job and degree; Present for the current role
MBA lineMaster of Business Administration (MBA), concentration, school, city, graduation month and year
Text size10 to 12 pt body text in one simple font, headings 1 to 2 sizes larger
PhotoLeft off, as on most US and Canadian resumes
Personal detailsCity and state only; nothing on age, family or your Social Security number
File typePDF unless the school portal or job ad asks for another format

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo, and that holds for school applications and corporate job searches alike. A clean one- or two-column layout keeps your bullets readable in an applicant tracking system.

MBA resume summary vs. objective

Are you staying in the function you already work in? Then write a resume summary with your title, your years, your best result and the MBA. If the degree is your bridge into a new function, write a short resume objective that names the target role and the strongest proof you already have. On an application resume, keep it to 2 lines or leave it out, since your essays carry the goals.

MBA resume summary formula

Title with X years in function or industry and an MBA from school, year. Your biggest business result, in figures. The role or industry you want next.

Example

Strategy associate with 8 years in insurance finance and food manufacturing and an MBA from Iowa State University, 2023. Found $3.4M in annual procurement savings across 9 supplier contracts. Looking for a corporate development role at a consumer goods company.

Don't

Results-driven MBA graduate with strong leadership and analytical skills, seeking a challenging role in a dynamic organization.

Do

Product manager with an MBA and 4 years in B2B software, owning a billing product used by 1,800 accounts. Cut failed payments by 31% in 2025 with retry logic and reminder emails.

The rewrite names a function, a product, a scale and a result the reader can check in an interview.

How to write MBA work experience bullets with numbers

Your current job gets 3 to 4 bullets; each earlier role gets 1 to 3, every one starting with a verb and ending on a result. Admissions readers and recruiters both skim for the scale of what you touched, so write achievements on your resume in dollars, people, percentages and dates rather than duties. Pick the numbers your own function already tracks:

Numbers that prove MBA-level work
FunctionWhat to countExample bullet
ConsultingEngagements, workstreams, savings found, recommendations adoptedLed 3 workstreams on a 10-week cost study that found $2.1M in annual savings.
ProductLaunches, users, activation, retentionLaunched a self-serve onboarding flow that lifted 30-day activation from 41% to 55%.
FinanceDeal or model size, forecast accuracy, cost of capitalBuilt the model for a $60M debt refinancing that lowered the interest rate by 70 basis points.
OperationsCost per unit, throughput, on-time rate, sitesRaised on-time shipments from 88% to 96% across 2 distribution centers.
MarketingBudget, cost per acquisition, revenue, market shareShifted a $1.2M ad budget from display to search and cut cost per acquisition by 22%.
LeadershipPromotions, direct reports, budget ownedPromoted twice in 4 years and managed 5 analysts from the second promotion on.

Here is one MBA graduate's experience, written for a corporate strategy role. The current job carries the post-MBA results, and the pre-MBA employer stays on the page, split by title to show the promotion.

Sample entry: corporate strategy associate after an MBA

Don't

Responsible for financial analysis and reporting.

Do

Built the monthly operating review for 4 business units and flagged a $900K overspend in Q2 2025 in time to reverse it.

The better bullet shows the scope, the deliverable and what changed because of it.

Don't

Participated in a consulting project for a local company.

Do

Led a 4-person MBA consulting team for a 120-employee manufacturer; the client adopted 3 of 5 recommendations within 6 months.

MBA skills and software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that match the job ad or the program's focus, and make sure a bullet backs each one. Financial modeling and market sizing fit almost any MBA resume; pricing, supply chain or product discovery only where your work shows them.

Hard skills for MBA resumes

  • Financial modeling
  • Valuation and due diligence
  • Market sizing
  • Business case development
  • Pricing strategy
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Data analysis
  • Process improvement
  • Go-to-market planning
  • Executive presentations

Soft skills MBA recruiters value

  • Leading without authority
  • Structured problem solving
  • Negotiation
  • Clear writing for executives
  • Coaching junior staff
  • Working across functions

Name your tools with your skills, then use each one in a bullet so the reader sees what you built with it. Excel and PowerPoint are expected; list them by function, such as scenario models or board decks. Add SQL, Tableau, Power BI, Salesforce, Jira or a named ERP only if you have used it and the posting asks for it, written exactly as the posting writes it.

GMAT, GRE and CFA: test scores and credentials on an MBA resume

A test score is not a certification, so it goes on your MBA line under Education, while credentials such as a CFA level, a CPA or a PMP belong in Certificates, each with its issuing body and year. List certifications on your resume only when a reader in your target field would check for them. Wharton requires GMAT or GRE results, while SMU Cox accepts the GMAT, GRE or Executive Assessment and is test-optional, so the score matters more for some programs than others.

Test scores and credentials MBA readers check
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
GMAT examGMAC (Graduate Management Admission Council)3 sections of 45 minutes each (Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights), a total score from 205 to 805, and scores valid for 5 years.
GRE General TestETSAccepted in place of the GMAT at Wharton and SMU Cox; report the scores each school asks for.
CFA charterCFA InstitutePass 3 exams and complete at least 4,000 hours of relevant work experience over no fewer than 36 months.

Where to put a GMAT or GRE score

On an application resume, the score already reaches the school through the application form, so leave it off unless the program's instructions ask for it. On a job resume, add a strong score to the MBA line in Education (GMAT 685) when you apply to consulting or finance roles in your first year out, and remove it once you have a post-MBA job. For the CFA, list each level you have passed with the year, and keep CFA off your name line until the charter is awarded.

Sample Certificates section: CFA levels passed

Certificates

  • CFA Program, Level I, CFA Institute, passed 2024
  • CFA Program, Level II, CFA Institute, passed 2026

How to list an MBA on your resume

Put the MBA first under Education, written as Master of Business Administration (MBA) with your concentration, the school, its city and the graduation month. Follow the usual rules for listing education on a resume and add 1 line of honors, leadership or a case competition. Include your GPA if it is 3.5 or higher and you graduated in the last 2 to 3 years. While you are enrolled, write Expected 05/2027 in place of a date, and keep the program in reverse-chronological order with your bachelor's degree below it.

Write each school's name as it was in the year you graduated, sub-schools included. Boston University's School of Management, for example, became the Questrom School of Business in March 2015, so a 2014 graduate lists the old name. On an application resume, your bachelor's degree is the education entry, with your GPA, major and any honors.

Sample education entry: MBA with a concentration

Education

Master of Business Administration (MBA), Finance05/2023
Iowa State University | Ames, IA

GPA 3.8. Vice President, MBA Finance Club (60 members). Case competition: 2nd of 14 teams.

Bachelor of Science in Finance05/2016
Drake University | Des Moines, IA

MBA application resumes and career changes after an MBA

An application resume argues for admission, so it leans on progression and leadership outside work as much as on job results. With 2 to 4 years of experience, every line counts, and these are the places your strongest proof usually sits:

  • Promotions and early responsibility: the date you first managed people, a client or a budget, with the number.
  • Projects outside your job description: a process you rebuilt or a pilot you ran, with its result.
  • Community leadership: a board seat, a fundraiser or a mentoring program, as a Volunteer Experience entry or a Key Achievement, with dollars raised or people served.
  • International or language exposure: work abroad or a client market in another language, under Languages or in a bullet.
  • Undergraduate standouts: honors, a thesis or a varsity sport, kept to 1 line under your bachelor's degree.

If you are using the MBA to switch functions, from hospital operations to product or from engineering to consulting, write an objective that names the target role and puts your most relevant pre-MBA result first. A career-change resume keeps reverse-chronological order and moves the bullets closest to the new field to the top of each job.

Don't

MBA graduate seeking an opportunity in product management.

Do

MBA candidate (Expected 05/2027) moving from 5 years in hospital operations into healthcare product management. Ran a scheduling pilot across 3 clinics that cut patient wait times by 12 minutes.

The objective names the new role and brings 1 result from the old field that a product team would value.

Explain the reason for the switch in a cover letter rather than on the resume, as in these business cover letter examples.

MBA resume FAQ

Should I put my GMAT score on my resume?

Only on a job resume, and only while it helps. Business schools collect your score through the application itself, so an application resume can leave it off. In your first year after the MBA, a strong GMAT or GRE score can go on the MBA line under Education for consulting or finance roles; remove it after your first post-MBA job.

How long should an MBA application resume be?

1 page. Wharton's 2026-2027 application guide asks for a one-page resume, and SMU Cox asks for the same. Check each program's instructions before you submit, and cut older bullets before you shrink the font.

How do I list an MBA in progress on my resume?

List it first under Education as Master of Business Administration (MBA), with your concentration, the school, its city and Expected followed by the month and year you will graduate. Add 1 line for your internship, a leadership role or a case competition if you have one.

Should I put my undergraduate GPA on an MBA resume?

Yes on an application resume, if it is 3.5 or higher, since admissions readers weigh your undergraduate record. On a post-MBA job resume, show your MBA GPA if it is strong and recent, and drop the undergraduate GPA.

What is the difference between an MBA application resume and a job resume?

The audience. An application resume shows admissions readers your growth, leadership and potential, often with community roles and undergraduate honors. A job resume shows a hiring manager results in one function, puts the MBA under Education and trims anything that does not support the target role.

Where do MBA clubs and case competitions go on a resume?

Under Education, as 1 line beneath the MBA entry: the role you held, the club and its size, or the competition and your placing. If you won several, move the strongest to Key Achievements and keep the Education line short.

How do I list the job I had before my MBA?

Keep it as its own Work Experience entry with its title, employer, city and dates, below your post-MBA role and any summer internship. Give it 1 to 3 bullets with the results most relevant to your target job, and show any promotion with its own title and dates.

Should I put my MBA summer internship on my resume?

Yes. List it under Work Experience with its title, employer, city and dates, between your post-MBA job and your pre-MBA role, with 1 to 2 bullets on the project you delivered.
