22 Business Analyst Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Hiring managers read a business analyst resume for the requirements you wrote, the processes you mapped and what changed after go-live. Use these examples and the guide below to attach figures to that work, name your tools and list your IIBA certification where it gets noticed.

Business Analyst resume example

Business analysts turn a vague business problem into something a team can build. Your resume should show how: the stakeholders you worked with, the requirements and process maps you produced, the tools you used and what improved after the change went live. Since most of that happens in a team, bullets often skip the part that was yours. Name the deliverable you owned, then the result it led to, and the line belongs to you.

How to Write a Business Analyst Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Order your jobs newest first (reverse-chronological) and stay on 1 page until you pass 10 years or lead other analysts.
  • Open with 2 to 3 lines naming your domain, your methodology, your strongest requirements or process result and your certification.
  • Name the artifact you produced in each bullet, such as user stories, a process map or UAT test cases, then the outcome in figures.
  • Name the tools from the job ad, such as Jira, Visio, SQL or Power BI, in your Skills section and again inside a bullet.
  • List an ECBA, CCBA, CBAP or PMP under Certificates, naming IIBA or PMI and the year, and keep only the highest IIBA level you hold.
  • Put projects as bullets under the employer that ran them, then test the file in an ATS resume checker before you apply.

What hiring managers look for in a business analyst resume

The BLS lists the core duties of management analysts, the group O*NET files the business analyst title under, as gathering and organizing information about the problems to be solved, interviewing staff and observing work on site, and recommending new systems, procedures or organizational changes. O*NET adds conferring with staff to make sure newly implemented systems work and documenting findings with recommendations for implementation.

A hiring manager reading your resume wants each of those steps to show up with a deliverable attached: the requirements document, the backlog, the process map, the test plan. Build the page from these sections, named the way most applicant tracking systems expect:

  • Your name, a headline (Business Analyst, CBAP, for instance) and contact details
  • Summary of 2 or 3 lines just below your name (no heading)
  • Work Experience, with projects as bullets under each employer
  • Skills, with your BA tools listed among them
  • Certificates
  • Education
  • Extras when there is room: Languages, Volunteer Experience, Key Achievements

Best format for a business analyst resume

Choose the reverse-chronological resume format, with your latest role on top and each entry showing title, employer and city, plus MM/YYYY dates for when it began and ended. Business analysis careers tend to climb from analyst to senior, lead and manager, and often cross domains such as insurance, banking or supply chain, so a dated history lets the reader follow both. It also suits career changers: the order stays the same, and your summary explains the switch.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a business analyst resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Stay on 1 page until you have about 10 years in the field. A senior business analyst or lead who has run several programs or managed other analysts can use 2 pages, provided page 1 holds the 2 latest roles and their best results.

Business Analyst resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page; 2 once you pass 10 years or lead a team of analysts
Job title lineYour exact title plus the domain if it helps: Business Analyst, Claims Systems
ProjectsBullets under the employer that ran them, never a separate section
DatesMM/YYYY for start and end, Present for the role you hold now
Photo and ID detailsLeave the photo off for most US and Canadian employers; no date of birth, marital status or SSN
File typePDF by default; a .docx only when the employer requests Word

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo, and BA hiring managers judge yours on the deliverables and figures in your bullets.

Business analyst resume summary vs. objective

Use one test: if requirements, process or reporting work was the main part of a job you have held, write a resume summary. If it was only a side task so far, write a resume objective that names the BA role you want and the closest proof you have. Either way, keep it to 2 or 3 lines and borrow its figure from your strongest bullet.

Business analyst resume summary formula

Title with X years of process, requirements or systems work in domain, working in methodology teams. Your biggest requirements or process win, in figures. Certification and status.

Example

Business analyst with 8 years of process and requirements work in insurance and freight, working in Scrum teams. Wrote the requirements behind a claims intake portal that cut first notice of loss processing from 3 days to 1. CCBA certified, with the CBAP exam scheduled for 03/2027.

Don't

Results-oriented business analyst skilled in bridging the gap between business and IT, seeking to add value to a dynamic organization.

Do

Business analyst with 4 years in health insurance, writing requirements for 2 pharmacy benefit releases in Jira. The member portal changes cut prior-authorization calls by 30% in their first quarter.

This version gives the domain, the tool, the deliverable and an outcome a manager can check.

How to write business analyst work experience bullets with numbers

Your current role gets 3 to 4 bullets and each earlier role 2 to 4, all opening with a verb. Business analysis leaves countable traces, such as stories written, workshops run, test cases passed and hours removed from a process, so use those to show achievements on your resume instead of a list of meetings you attended.

Numbers that prove business analysis work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
RequirementsUser stories, use cases, acceptance criteria, releasesWrote 48 user stories with acceptance criteria for a 2-sprint billing release.
Process improvementSteps or handoffs removed, cycle time before and afterRemoved 3 handoffs from vendor onboarding, cutting approval time from 10 to 4 days.
ElicitationWorkshops, interviews, stakeholders, departmentsRan 6 discovery workshops with 25 stakeholders to scope a new returns process.
ReportingReports built or retired, hours saved, usersRetired 12 weekly Excel reports with 1 shared dashboard, saving 15 hours a week.
Testing and UATTest cases, defects found, defects after go-liveWrote 180 UAT test cases; the release went live with 2 minor defects.
Rollout and adoptionUsers trained, adoption rate, ticketsTrained 350 users on the new CRM; 92% were active after 60 days.

Below is one analyst's entry built that way. The current role leads with the deliverables this analyst owned, and the earlier operations job shows the process and data work that led into business analysis.

Business analyst skills and tools for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that match the job ad and that a bullet already proves. Requirements elicitation and process mapping belong on nearly every BA resume; SQL, data modeling or a specific platform only if you use them at work, not just in a course.

Hard skills for business analysts

  • Requirements elicitation
  • User stories and acceptance criteria
  • Business process modeling (BPMN)
  • Gap analysis
  • Use cases
  • Backlog refinement
  • User acceptance testing (UAT)
  • Data analysis with SQL
  • Wireframing
  • Cost-benefit analysis

Soft skills BA managers value

  • Stakeholder management
  • Facilitation
  • Clear technical writing
  • Active listening
  • Negotiating scope
  • Structured problem solving

List your tools among your skills, then show each one at work in a bullet. For management analysts, O*NET marks Microsoft Excel, Visio, SharePoint and Power BI, Atlassian Jira, Tableau, Salesforce, SQL and Python as both hot and in-demand technology. Write the exact product names the posting uses, and say what you did in each: a backlog kept in Jira, a swimlane map drawn in Visio, a query written in SQL.

ECBA, CCBA, CBAP and PMP: certifications for business analysts

The BLS says management analysts are not required to hold a certification, but a credential may give job seekers an edge. Add certifications to your resume under Certificates with the full name, the issuer and the year. The International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA) offers its core business analysis certifications in 3 levels, and the PMP from PMI fits analysts who also run projects.

Business analysis certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
ECBA (Entry Certificate in Business Analysis)IIBANo eligibility requirements to sit the exam; the entry level of IIBA's ladder.
CCBA (Certification of Capability in Business Analysis)IIBA3,750 hours of business analysis work in the last 7 years, 21 professional development hours in the last 4 years and 2 professional references.
CBAP (Certified Business Analysis Professional)IIBA7,500 hours of work experience in the last 10 years, 35 professional development hours in the last 4 years, 2 references, and a 120-question, 210-minute exam.
PMP (Project Management Professional)PMIWith a bachelor's degree, 3 years of experience leading projects plus 35 hours of project management training, then the exam.

How to list a certification exam you have not taken yet

Put the credential you hold first, then add a line for the exam you are preparing for with its scheduled month, such as CBAP, exam scheduled 03/2027. Keep the unearned credential off your headline and name line until IIBA confirms it.

Sample Certificates section: CCBA held, CBAP scheduled

Certificates

  • Certification of Capability in Business Analysis (CCBA), IIBA, 2023
  • Certified Business Analysis Professional (CBAP), IIBA, exam scheduled 03/2027

How to list a business, IT or economics degree on a BA resume

The BLS lists a bachelor's degree as the typical entry-level requirement for management analysts and notes that some employers prefer an MBA. Degrees in business administration, information systems, economics, finance or engineering are common routes in. When listing education on a resume, give the degree exactly as awarded, the school and its city, and the month you finished.

Add 1 line of coursework only in your first 2 years out of school, and only courses an employer would test you on, such as systems analysis and design or database design. After your first BA role, cut the coursework and keep the degree line short.

Entry-level and career-change business analyst resumes

Without a BA title yet, look at the entry-level business analyst page and lead with an objective, put Education above Work Experience, and follow with the work closest to analysis. Treat each item below like a job entry, with a count or a before-and-after number.

  • Capstone or consulting projects: the client, the process you mapped, the interviews you ran and what the client changed.
  • Internships in operations, finance or IT: reports built, requirements written, test cases run.
  • Process fixes in a non-BA job: a checklist, template or workflow you designed, with the time it saved.
  • Nonprofit or student group work: a membership or donation system you set up, listed under Volunteer Experience.

Don't

Motivated graduate looking for an entry-level business analyst position to grow my skills.

Do

Information systems graduate seeking a junior business analyst role. Ran 14 staff interviews and delivered 1 current-state process map in an 8-week capstone for a local food bank; ECBA earned in 2026.

Even a graduate's objective needs proof: a project, a count and a credential.

Moving over from engineering, accounting, QA testing, operations or customer support? Keep the reverse-chronological order and use a summary that names the analysis you already do, such as specifications, process audits or test plans. A career-change resume works best when the top bullets in your current job are its most analytical. The why behind the switch belongs in a cover letter; these business analyst cover letter examples show how to say it in a few sentences.

Business Analyst resume FAQ

Do I need a certification to get a business analyst job?

No. The BLS says management analysts, the group O*NET files business analysts under, are not required to be certified, though a credential may give job seekers an edge. An ECBA helps a newcomer show training, and a CCBA or CBAP helps once you have the hours IIBA asks for.

How long should a business analyst resume be?

Use 1 page for your first 10 years in the field. Lead and senior analysts with several programs, domains or direct reports can go to 2 pages, as long as the first page carries the 2 latest roles.

How is a business analyst resume different from a data analyst resume?

A business analyst resume leads with requirements, process changes and stakeholders, while a data analyst resume leads with datasets, queries and models. If you do both, put the work the job ad stresses first, and keep SQL or Power BI as supporting proof on a BA resume.

Should I put Agile or Scrum on a business analyst resume?

Yes, if you have worked in it. Name the method in your summary and show it in a bullet, such as user stories written per sprint or backlog items refined, so a hiring manager can tell how you worked rather than spot a buzzword in Skills.

How do I show business analysis work if my title was never business analyst?

Keep your real job title and let the bullets show the analysis. Lead with the requirements, process maps, test plans or reports you produced, and name the BA role you are aiming for in your summary so the reader makes the link.

Which tools should a business analyst list on a resume?

List the tools from the posting that you have used at work, by their exact product names. Jira, Visio, Excel, SQL and Power BI are common on BA postings; 5 or 6 tools backed by bullets read better than a long list.

Do I need a Projects section on a business analyst resume?

No. Put each project as a bullet under the employer that ran it, with your deliverable and the result. That keeps your dates clear and shows the reader where the work happened.

What is the average salary for a business analyst?

O*NET files business analysts under management analysts, whose BLS median pay was $101,860 a year in May 2025. Keep pay off your resume.
