IT Manager resume example

IT managers keep the systems a company runs on working, secure and paid for. A CIO or operations head hiring for the role wants scale first: the users and sites you supported, the staff who reported to you, the budget you held and whether systems stayed up. A long list of platforms says less than one project you took from budget approval to go-live, with the team size, cost and uptime figures that came with it.

How to Write an IT Manager Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Pick reverse-chronological order and 1 page, or 2 once you have 10+ years and more than one IT leadership role.
  • Open with a 2- to 3-line summary that gives your team size, the users or sites you support and your strongest cost, uptime or project result.
  • Give each bullet a management number: staff, budget, tickets, availability, patch compliance or a migration delivered on schedule.
  • Name your platforms, such as Microsoft Azure, AWS or ServiceNow, in Skills and prove each one inside a bullet.
  • List PMP, ITIL 4 Foundation, CISSP or CISM under Certificates, each with its issuer and year, and write CISSP only once ISC2 has certified you.
  • Run the final PDF through an ATS resume checker so your titles, platforms and certification names parse cleanly.

What employers look for in an IT manager resume

A CIO, an IT director or a company's operations head reads your resume to judge how much you can be trusted to run. The BLS lists planning the installation and maintenance of hardware and software, keeping security processes in place, weighing the costs and benefits of new projects and negotiating with vendors as core duties. O*NET adds managing backup, security and user help systems, and assigning and reviewing the work of analysts and other IT staff.

So each job on your resume should answer 4 questions: how big the environment was, who reported to you, what money you controlled, and what changed because you were there. Lay it out in sections that ATS software reads without trouble:

  • Name, headline with your title and top credential (IT Manager, PMP) and contact details
  • Summary of 2 to 3 lines up top, untitled
  • Work Experience, current role first
  • Skills, with your platforms and systems
  • Certificates
  • Education
  • If space allows: Languages, then Volunteer Experience or Key Achievements

Best format for an IT manager resume

Pick the reverse-chronological resume format and list your newest role first, each with title, employer, city and dates written as MM/YYYY. Most IT managers get there through support, systems or network work, and this order shows each step: technician, administrator, team lead, manager. If you are moving into IT from operations, finance or another business function, keep the same order and let your summary and first bullets carry the technology work.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for an IT manager resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

With under 10 years of experience, fit it on 1 page. A director-track or senior IT manager with 10+ years, several sites or a long list of migrations can use 2 pages, provided page 1 holds the current role and the one before it.

IT Manager resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page under 10 years; 2 pages for senior roles across several sites or systems
DatesMonth and year (MM/YYYY) on both ends; the current role ends in Present
HeadlineYour title plus your top credential: IT Manager, PMP
TypefaceOne clean sans serif, body text between 10 and 12 pt
Photo, birth date and other personal dataLeave the photo off for most US and Canadian applications; never list your date of birth, marital status or SSN
File typePDF by default, or a Word file when the application portal requests one

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Keep tables, text boxes and icons out of the work history so platform names and certification acronyms parse cleanly.

IT manager resume summary vs. objective

If you have already led IT staff or owned an IT budget, write a resume summary of 2 to 3 lines with your scope, your environment and one result. If this would be your first management role, write an objective with the role you want and the leadership you have already shown, such as running an on-call rota or a rollout. Draft it after your bullets so its number comes from them.

IT manager resume summary formula

Title with X years in industry IT, leading team size staff who support users or sites. Strongest cost, uptime, security or migration result, with its figure. Certifications.

Example

IT manager with 10 years in insurance and food manufacturing IT, leading 7 staff who support 520 users at 4 sites. Moved 38 servers to Microsoft Azure and cut hosting costs by $96K a year. Holds the PMP and ITIL 4 Foundation.

Don't

Experienced IT manager with strong technical and leadership skills, looking to bring value to a forward-thinking organization.

Do

IT manager at a 300-employee credit union, leading 4 staff across 9 branches. Replaced the branch WAN with SD-WAN in 6 months with no branch down for more than 1 hour. ITIL 4 Foundation; CISSP exam scheduled for 2027.

How to write IT manager work experience bullets with numbers

Give your current role 3 to 4 bullets and older roles 1 to 4, fewer as they age, each starting with a verb and ending in a result. IT management already runs on measured figures: ticket queues, availability reports, patch dashboards, budget lines and project plans. Pull your numbers from those and write achievements on your resume instead of the duties in your job description.

Numbers that prove IT management work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Team and scopeStaff, contractors, users, sitesLed 5 analysts and 2 contractors supporting 900 users at 6 clinics.
Budget and vendorsAnnual budget, contracts, savingsOwned a $1.8M IT budget and finished FY2025 2% under plan.
Service deskTickets a month, resolution time, first-contact rateRaised first-contact resolution from 58% to 74% across 1,100 tickets a month.
Uptime and recoveryAvailability, outage hours, recovery testsHeld the ERP at 99.95% availability over 24 months, with recovery tested each quarter.
SecurityPatch compliance, MFA coverage, audit findingsPut MFA on 100% of 1,300 accounts and closed 11 of 12 audit findings before the next review.
ProjectsMigrations, go-lives, budget and scheduleDelivered a 14-month ERP upgrade on its $640K budget, live 2 weeks early.

Here is how an IT manager at a food producer might write it. The first bullet sets the scope, the rest show cost, service and vendor results, and the older systems role keeps 2 lines.

Don't

Responsible for managing the IT department.

Do

Managed a 6-person IT team and a $1.1M budget for a 280-employee distributor, cutting unplanned downtime from 31 to 9 hours a year.

A title already says you managed; the bullet has to say what the department looked like and what got better.

Don't

Worked on the cloud migration project.

Do

Led the move of 22 line-of-business apps to AWS over 9 months on a $410K budget and retired the last on-premises rack.

IT manager skills and systems for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 skills that appear in the vacancy and that your bullets already back up, mixing technical skills with the management work below. The leadership skills below are better shown in a result than typed into the list: a team you grew, a vendor you held to its contract, an outage you ran.

Hard skills for IT managers

  • IT budgeting and forecasting
  • Vendor and contract management
  • ITIL incident, change and problem management
  • Cloud administration (Azure, AWS)
  • Network and server infrastructure
  • Identity and access management
  • Backup and disaster recovery
  • Patch and vulnerability management
  • IT project management
  • IT asset lifecycle management

Soft skills IT leaders value

  • Explaining technical risk to non-technical leaders
  • Coaching and developing staff
  • Prioritizing competing requests
  • Negotiation
  • Composure during outages
  • Working across departments

Put your platforms in Skills, then name each one again in a bullet that shows what you did with it. O*NET marks Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services as in-demand technology for computer and information systems managers, and flags Microsoft Windows Server, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Atlassian Jira and Splunk Enterprise as hot technology. Add the service desk, endpoint and backup tools you actually ran, by their product names. On a healthcare IT manager resume, also name the EHR you supported, such as Epic or MEDITECH, and the HIPAA work you led, such as security risk analyses or access reviews.

PMP, ITIL 4, CISSP and CISM: certifications for IT managers

The BLS calls certification typically optional for computer and information systems managers, though some employers prefer it, most of all for managers who oversee IT security. When you hold one, list certifications on your resume under Certificates, naming who issued it and when. PMP fits delivery-heavy roles such as an IT project manager, ITIL 4 fits service and support leadership, and CISSP or CISM fits a role that owns security.

IT manager certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
PMP (Project Management Professional)Project Management Institute (PMI)35 hours of project management training or an active CAPM, plus 3 years of experience managing projects with a bachelor's degree (4 with an associate's, 5 with only high school), then the exam.
ITIL 4 FoundationPeopleCertNo prerequisites listed. A closed-book exam of 40 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, with 65% needed to pass.
CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional)ISC2Pass the exam and show 5 years of cumulative full-time experience in 2 or more of the 8 CISSP domains; a related bachelor's or master's can count for 1 year.
CISM (Certified Information Security Manager)ISACAPass the exam and show 5 years of information security management experience, gained within the 10 years before you apply.

If you passed the CISSP exam but lack the experience

ISC2 makes you an Associate of ISC2 when you pass the CISSP exam without the 5 years, and gives you 6 years to earn them. Write that status as it is, Associate of ISC2 with the exam date, and keep CISSP out of your headline until ISC2 certifies you. The same goes for an exam you have only booked: list it with its date and the word scheduled.

Sample Certificates section: PMP, ITIL 4 and an Associate of ISC2

Certificates

  • Project Management Professional (PMP), Project Management Institute, 08/2023
  • ITIL 4 Foundation, PeopleCert, 02/2020
  • Associate of ISC2, CISSP exam passed 05/2026

How to list an information systems or computer science degree

The BLS names a bachelor's in computer science or information technology as the usual education for computer and information systems managers, and adds that most of these jobs require several years of experience as well. Give each degree the basic lines for listing education on a resume: the degree name, the school and its city, and the month and year you finished. After 10 years in IT, Education sits below Work Experience and needs no GPA or coursework.

Put a master's or MBA above the bachelor's, with its date. A degree in another field still belongs here, with any IT certificate program as its own line, the way a career changer shows the training behind the switch.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Computer Science05/2016
North Dakota State University | Fargo, ND

Moving up from IT support or changing careers into IT management

The BLS puts the usual experience before this job at 5 years or more in a related occupation, and IT directors usually need many years. If you are applying for your first IT manager or assistant IT manager role from the help desk or a systems job, show the management work you already do, with the same numbers a manager's bullets carry.

  • Team lead duties: technicians you trained, scheduled or covered for, and the escalations you owned.
  • Projects you ran: a laptop refresh, an email migration or a site move, with device counts and dates.
  • Budget and vendor work: quotes you compared, renewals you handled and what they saved.
  • Business systems you owned from a non-IT job: an ERP or CRM rollout you led, with the number of users trained.
  • Certificates: ITIL 4 Foundation or the PMP, with the date passed.

Don't

Seeking an IT management position where I can grow my leadership skills.

Do

Systems administrator with 6 years of Windows and VMware work, seeking an assistant IT manager role. Led the on-call rota for 4 technicians and ran a 220-laptop refresh in 2025.

Even a first-time manager's objective has to show people or projects you have led.

Coming from operations, finance or marketing, open with the technology project you led and a summary that names it, then list the business role under its real title. A career-change resume works when the first bullets under your current job are its most technical ones. Keep the story of why you switched for the cover letter: these IT cover letter examples show how to tell it in a short paragraph.

IT Manager resume FAQ

How long should an IT manager resume be?

One page if you have under 10 years of experience. A senior IT manager with 10+ years, several sites or a run of major migrations can use 2 pages, as long as the current role and the one before it sit on page 1.

Do you need a degree to be an IT manager?

Usually, yes. The BLS names a bachelor's in computer science or information technology as the usual route for computer and information systems managers, plus several years of experience. If yours is in another field, list it with any IT certificate program under Education and let your technical bullets carry the case.

Which certifications help an IT manager resume most?

The one that matches the role. PMP from PMI suits project-heavy jobs, ITIL 4 Foundation from PeopleCert suits service and support leadership, and CISSP from ISC2 or CISM from ISACA suits a manager who owns security. The BLS calls certification typically optional, so list only what you hold or have scheduled.

Can I put CISSP on my resume as an Associate of ISC2?

No. Passing the exam without the 5 years of experience makes you an Associate of ISC2, not a CISSP. Write Associate of ISC2 with your exam date under Certificates, and add CISSP to your headline once ISC2 certifies you.

How technical should an IT manager resume be?

Technical enough to show you can judge your team's work, but led by management results. Name your main platforms in Skills and in the bullets where you used them, and let most bullets report scope, budget, uptime or delivery instead of commands and configurations.

Should I list every technology I have worked with on an IT manager resume?

No. Keep the platforms the vacancy lists and the ones your current environment runs on, each tied to a bullet. Old systems you no longer touch, and tools your team used without you, add length without telling a CIO anything about how you manage.

How do I show healthcare IT experience on an IT manager resume?

Name the setting and the clinical systems in the first lines. Give the number of clinics, beds or clinical users you supported, name the EHR, such as Epic or MEDITECH, and add a bullet on HIPAA work you led, such as a security risk analysis or a quarterly access review.

How do I go from systems administrator to IT manager on a resume?

Lead with the people and projects you already ran. Put a bullet on any team you coordinated, an on-call rota you owned or a rollout you led, each with a count, and add ITIL 4 Foundation or the PMP if you have it. An assistant IT manager or IT supervisor title is a common first step.

How much do IT managers make?

Computer and information systems managers had a median annual pay of $175,140 in May 2025, per the BLS. Leave pay off your resume and raise it in the interview or the application form; your offer will depend on the size of the organization, your industry and your location.
