English teachers spend their days improving other people's writing, so a principal will notice how well yours holds up. That principal wants to know which grades and courses you have taught, from 9th-grade composition to AP Literature, how you move reluctant readers through a novel, and how your students' essays changed between September and May. Essay scores on a shared rubric, state reading results and AP scores of 3 or higher turn that year of work into something a hiring committee can weigh against other candidates.
How to Write an English Teacher Resume - Key Takeaways
- List your jobs newest first in the reverse-chronological format and keep them to 1 page; a second page only fits after about 10 years or a department role.
- Put the grade and courses in each job title line, such as English 10 and AP English Language and Composition.
- Back your bullets with numbers an English department keeps: sections and students, rubric scores, state ELA proficiency and AP scores of 3 or higher.
- List your state teaching license first under Certificates, with the English endorsement and grade range exactly as the license prints them.
- Keep 6 to 8 skills that your bullets prove, and name your learning platform and feedback tools by their product names.
- Test your file with an ATS resume checker before you upload it to a district application system.
What principals check on an English teacher resume
An English teacher resume usually passes through a district HR screener, then the principal and the department chair. The screener checks the license and endorsement; the other two want the courses you have taught and evidence that students wrote and read better with you. The BLS lists grading assignments, communicating with parents and preparing students for state tests among a high school teacher's duties, and O*NET adds instructing through lectures and discussions and adapting materials to students' varying needs. Each of those can carry a number on your resume.
Give the hiring team these sections, under the headings they expect to find:
- Name, headline (for example, English Teacher, Grades 9-12) and contact details
- A 2- to 3-line profile directly under your name, which the designs leave untitled
- Work Experience, current school first, with the courses in each title line
- Certificates: your teaching license first, then endorsements and other credentials
- Skills, with your learning platform and feedback tools
- Education, with student teaching if you finished in the last 3 years
- If space allows: Languages, plus a Volunteer Experience section or a Key Achievements section
Best format for an English teacher resume
Choose the reverse-chronological resume format: current school first, each entry with your title and courses, then the school, the town it sits in and MM/YYYY dates that follow the school year. Principals want to trace the grades you have taught and whether you moved toward honors, AP or a lead role, and this order shows that path in a few seconds. Summer school, a long-term substitute post or an evening college course gets its own entry only if it lasted a term or more.
- Best for most English teachersReverse-chronologicalYour jobs, newest first, with your results under each one.Best for: A steady work history in your field
- FunctionalSkills grouped up top, with a short work history below.Best for: Gaps or very little experience
- CombinationA skills section first, then your full work history.Best for: A career change with strong skills
One page fits most English teachers through their first decade. Move to 2 pages once you have led a department, written curriculum for a district or taught in several states, and keep your license and current courses on page 1.
| Setting | What to use |
|---|---|
| Length | 1 page; 2 after about 10 years, curriculum work or a chair role |
| Dates | MM/YYYY by school year, such as 08/2022 – Present |
| Job title line | Title plus grade or courses: English Teacher, Grades 11-12 |
| Course names | As the master schedule lists them: English 9 Honors, AP English Literature and Composition |
| Photo, birth date and similar details | A photo is unusual in the US and Canada; skip marital status, birth date and your Social Security number |
| File type | PDF, or a Word file when the district's application system asks for one |
Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. District application systems often copy your file into their own form fields, so plain section headings and simple text help more than a decorative layout.
English teacher resume summary vs. objective
If you have taught English as the teacher of record for a full year, write a resume summary with your grades, courses, school type and 1 student result. If you are finishing student teaching or coming from another career, write a resume objective that names the grades you want to teach, your license status and your strongest classroom hours. Draft it last, after your bullets, so its number matches one you can defend in an interview.
English teacher resume summary formula
Title with X years teaching grades and courses at a type of school. 1 student or program result, with its figure. License and endorsement, or the credential you are working toward.
Example
English teacher with 7 years in grades 8 to 10, the last 4 teaching English 10 and AP English Language and Composition at a public high school. Grew AP Language enrollment from 38 to 64 students in 3 years. Indiana Practitioner License in English/Language Arts.
Don't
Passionate English teacher who loves literature and inspiring students to become lifelong readers.
Do
High school English teacher with 9 years in grades 9 to 12 and 5 years teaching AP English Literature and Composition; 41 of 56 students scored 3 or higher in May 2026. Licensed with an ESL endorsement.
The second version names the grades, the course and a result a department chair can check.
How to write English teacher bullets with reading and writing results
Under your current school, write 3 to 4 bullets; older jobs get 1 to 3. Open with your course load, sections and number of students, since every result reads against it. Then pick achievements for your resume that English departments track: essay scores on a common rubric, state ELA results, AP scores, reading volume, or students you coached to a publication or a competition.
| Area | What to count | Example bullet |
|---|---|---|
| Course load | Sections, students, levels, IEPs and English learners | Taught 3 sections of English 9 and 2 of English 11 Honors, 128 students in all. |
| Writing growth | Rubric scores, common assessments, drafts per unit | Lifted the average argument essay score on a 6-trait rubric from 3.1 to 3.9 between the fall and spring benchmarks. |
| Reading | Benchmark growth, books read, intervention gains | Built a classroom library of 400 titles; students finished an average of 9 books each during the year. |
| AP and dual credit | Enrollment, scores of 3 or higher, sections added | Took AP Literature from 22 to 41 students in 2 years while 70% kept scoring 3 or higher. |
| State tests | ELA proficiency, growth by class | Moved grade 11 ELA proficiency on the state test from 38% to 47% across 2 sections. |
| Beyond the classroom | Debate, newspaper, magazine, student teachers | Coached a speech and debate team of 18 students to 6 state qualifiers. |
Here is how those numbers sit in one teacher's entry. The course load leads, the results follow, and the middle school job before it keeps a single line.
Work Experience
- Teach 4 sections of English 10 and 1 of AP English Language and Composition, 131 students in 2025-26.
- Raised the share of AP Language students scoring 3 or higher from 46% to 61% over 3 exam years by adding weekly timed rhetorical analysis essays.
- Moved 10th-grade argument essays to a shared 6-point rubric with 3 colleagues; students scoring 4 or higher on the spring common assessment rose from 52% to 68%.
- Advise the student literary magazine, with 14 student editors and 2 issues a year.
- Taught 6 sections of grade 8 ELA to 152 students a year; 23 of 31 students in a reading intervention class gained 1 or more grade levels on the spring benchmark.
Don't
Taught English to high school students.
Do
Taught 5 sections of English 11 American Literature to 142 juniors, 19 with IEPs or 504 plans, and co-taught 2 of those sections with a special education teacher.
Now the course, the load and the students in the room are all on one line.
Don't
Graded essays and provided feedback to students.
Do
Returned comments on every draft of 4 major essays within 5 school days through Google Classroom; on-time final drafts rose from 71% to 88%.
English teaching skills and classroom software for your resume
Pick 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume from the posting and keep only those a bullet already proves. Writing instruction and close reading belong on nearly every English teacher resume; AP exam preparation, reading intervention or debate coaching only when you have done them.
Hard skills for English teachers
- Writing instruction
- Close reading and literary analysis
- Unit and lesson planning
- Rubric design and scoring calibration
- Differentiated instruction
- Grammar and conventions
- Research writing and citation
- Reading intervention
- AP exam preparation
- Formative assessment
Soft skills principals value
- Clear written feedback
- Classroom management
- Patience with reluctant readers
- Family communication
- Co-teaching and collaboration
- Leading discussion
List your software among your skills, then prove each tool inside a work entry, for example the essay feedback you returned through it. O*NET lists Google Classroom and Blackboard among the tools secondary teachers use and flags Microsoft Word and PowerPoint as hot technologies. Write the district's own platform exactly as the posting does, whether that is Canvas, Schoology or Google Classroom, and add a feedback or plagiarism tool such as Turnitin only if you used it every week.
Teaching license, English endorsement and National Board Certification
The BLS states that every state requires public school teachers to be licensed or certified for the grade level they teach, usually after a student-teaching program, a background check and a general teaching test plus a subject test. Each state sets its own tests, so write the license as your state names it, with the English endorsement and grade range. Below the license, list certifications on your resume one per line, naming who issued each and when.
| Credential | Issued by | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| State teaching license with an English endorsement | Your state's education department or licensing board | A bachelor's degree, an approved preparation program with student teaching, a background check and the state's tests, including an English subject test. |
| Indiana Practitioner License (an example of a 2-step license) | Indiana Department of Education | Starts as a 2-year Initial Practitioner license; converts to the 5-year Practitioner license after 2 years in the content area and, on one route, 40 professional growth points. |
| National Board Certification, English Language Arts | National Board for Professional Teaching Standards | A bachelor's degree, 3 years of teaching, a valid state license and 4 components, finished within a 5-year window. |
| AP English course authorization | College Board | Your AP Language or AP Literature syllabus passes the AP Course Audit, so the course may carry the AP label. |
How to write the license line after an upgrade
Write only the license you hold now, with its full name, the English endorsement, the grade range, the issuing agency and the month it was issued. A 2-year initial license that has since converted drops off; a conversion that is pending goes on as expected, with the month. Leave the license number off, since districts check it with the state themselves.
Certificates
- Practitioner License, English/Language Arts (5-12), Indiana Department of Education, 07/2021
- Heartsaver CPR AED, American Heart Association, 06/2025
How to list an English or English education degree
The BLS says every state requires public high school teachers to hold at least a bachelor's degree, which may be in education, and many states want a major in the subject itself. That makes either a degree in English education or a degree in English followed by a licensure program a normal path. Name the degree as your diploma does, and if your licensure program was a separate graduate certificate or master's, list it as its own entry above the bachelor's.
The standard order for listing education on a resume works here too: degree first, then the school with its location, then the month you graduated. In your first 3 years, add a GPA of 3.5 or higher and 1 line on student teaching with the courses and weeks; after that, the degree, school and date are enough.
Education
GPA 3.5. Student teaching: 16 weeks in English 9 and English 11.
First-year and career-change English teacher resumes
In your first year, treat student teaching as your main job entry: the courses, the weeks you led them alone, the number of students and 1 result from a unit you designed. Then add any work with readers and writers your degree years gave you. The first-year teacher resume examples show the same order for other subjects.
- Writing center or tutoring: sessions a week, the courses students brought in, and how many came back.
- Student teaching: courses, grade, weeks of full responsibility and a unit result, as a Work Experience entry.
- Camp, library or after-school programs: under Volunteer Experience when unpaid, with the age group and the number of children.
- Student newspaper or literary magazine: your editing role and the issues published, in a bullet or under Key Achievements.
Don't
Recent English graduate seeking a teaching position where I can share my love of reading.
Do
English education graduate seeking a grade 9 or 10 English position, license expected 06/2026. Taught 4 sections of English 9 during 15 weeks of student teaching after 2 years as a campus writing center tutor.
Even an objective has to show evidence: grades, a license date and time in front of students.
Changing careers into English teaching usually runs through an alternative route: the BLS says every state offers one for people who already hold a bachelor's degree, and some let you teach while you finish it. Keep reverse-chronological order, put your program and license status at the top of Certificates, and keep the older bullets that show writing, training adults or presenting to groups. Our teacher career change resume page shows the layout, and your cover letter is where you explain the move in 1 short paragraph.
English Teacher resume FAQ
Should I list the novels and texts I teach on my resume?
Not as a list. Name the course and level instead, and mention a text only inside a bullet where it carries a result, such as a new unit on a memoir that raised essay scores. A reading list takes the room your numbers need.
How do I show AP English results on a resume?
Give the course by its College Board name, your number of AP students and the share who scored 3 or higher, with the exam year. A change over time, such as a rising pass rate or growing enrollment, says more than a single year's figure.
Can I teach English with an English degree but no teaching license?
Yes, by way of an alternative program. The BLS says every state has such a route for people who already hold a bachelor's degree, and some programs let you teach under supervision while you complete it. Private schools may hire without a license.
How long should an English teacher resume be?
One page for most English teachers, including new graduates and teachers with up to about 10 years. Use 2 pages once you have chaired a department, written district curriculum or taught across several states, with your license and current courses on page 1.
Where do yearbook, newspaper or debate coaching go on an English teacher resume?
In a bullet under the school you advise for, when the role is part of your contract or carries a stipend, with a number such as issues published or state qualifiers. Unpaid coaching outside your school goes under Volunteer Experience.
Should I put my National Board Certification in the headline?
Yes, once it is awarded. Add NBCT after your title in the headline and list the certificate area, English Language Arts, under Certificates with its year. While you are a candidate, list it under Certificates only, with the components you have finished.
Is an ESL endorsement worth listing on an English teacher resume?
Yes, if your license carries one. Many English classes include English learners, so write the endorsement on your license line and back it with a bullet that counts the English learners you taught or the supports you built for them.
What is the average English teacher salary?
High school teachers earned a median of $72,040 a year in May 2025, per BLS figures. Pay follows your district's salary schedule, your degree and your years of service, so leave it off your resume.
