Electrician resume example

Safety and code decide how electrical work is judged, and the same goes for the resume of every helper, apprentice and journeyman. Contractors and maintenance supervisors check what kind of jobs you have wired, your license status and whether you can work without close supervision. Pulling wire and passing inspections appear on nearly every electrician's resume, so the details make the difference: the license written exactly as your state issues it, and a size or result on each job.

How to Write an Electrician Resume - Key Takeaways

  • List jobs newest first on 1 page; move to 2 only with 10+ years and several specialties.
  • Put the work type in each job title line: residential, commercial, industrial or maintenance.
  • Give each bullet a size or a result: amps, square footage, panels, units, inspections passed or downtime cut.
  • List your license first under Certificates, exactly as your state or city issues it, then OSHA and other training.
  • Count apprenticeship hours, since a contractor reads them as your progress toward a journeyman license.
  • Check the file with an ATS resume checker before you apply to large contractors, utilities or plants that screen online.

What contractors and hiring managers look for in an electrician resume

The person reading your resume is usually a project manager, a foreman or a plant maintenance supervisor, and they want to know if you can work on their kind of job without close supervision. The Bureau of Labor Statistics lists reading blueprints, installing and maintaining wiring, control and lighting systems, finding problems with testing devices and following codes based on the National Electrical Code as core duties. O*NET adds keeping a current electrician's license or identification card and directing or training other workers.

Build the resume from these sections, named the way an applicant tracking system expects them:

  • Name, headline (for example, Journeyman Electrician, Commercial) and contact details
  • A 2 to 3 line summary or objective under your name, without a section title
  • Work Experience, current job first, each title naming the work type
  • Certificates: your license or apprentice registration first, then safety training
  • Skills, with the testing tools and software you use
  • Education, including the classroom side of your apprenticeship
  • Optional: Languages, Key Achievements or Volunteer Experience

Best format for an electrician resume

Pick the reverse-chronological resume format: your latest job at the top, each with the title, the contractor or employer and its city, with MM/YYYY dates. The trade has clear steps, from helper to apprentice, journeyman, foreman and master, and this order lets a reader follow them. If you worked for several contractors through a union hall in the same year, group the short dispatches under 1 entry and name the projects in its bullets.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for an electrician resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

A single page fits most electricians through their journeyman years. A foreman, superintendent or master electrician with 10+ years and several specialties can use 2 pages, as long as the license, the current job and the biggest projects sit on page 1.

Electrician resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page through journeyman; 2 pages for foremen or masters with 10+ years and several specialties
DatesMM/YYYY on both ends of each job; write Present while you still work there
Job title lineTitle plus work type: Electrician, Residential Service
License lineLicense name as issued, the issuing state or city, and the month it was issued
Photo and private dataNot expected in the US and Canada; skip your age, family status and SSN as well
File typePDF by default; a Word file only where an online application asks for one

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Large contractors and utilities take applications through online portals, so plain section titles and a text-based PDF get your license and project details read correctly.

Electrician resume summary vs. objective

Once you hold a license or have worked a full year in the trade, write a resume summary that names your license level, your years, your work type and 1 project with a size. If you are applying for a helper job or an apprenticeship, write a resume objective instead: the program or job you want, your safety training and the work that shows you can handle the physical side. Write it last and reuse a number from your bullets.

Electrician resume summary formula

License level electrician with X years in residential, commercial or industrial work. Your biggest project or system, with a size. Safety training, specialty or next credential.

Example

Journeyman electrician with 11 years in commercial construction, 6 of them licensed. Wired 11 floors of tenant space in an office tower with no failed inspections. OSHA 30 trained and working toward the NABCEP PV Installation Professional credential.

Don't

Hardworking electrician with experience in residential and commercial wiring looking for a new opportunity with a growing company.

Do

Journeyman licensed for 7 years, wiring commercial jobs from 400 A services to fire alarm tie-ins. Led a 5-person crew on a 48,000 sq ft school renovation that passed final inspection on the first visit.

The rewrite gives the license, the work type, a service size and a result an inspector signed off on.

How to write electrician work experience bullets with numbers

Your current job takes 3 to 4 bullets, and each older one 1 to 3. Open with the scale of the work, such as the building size, the number of units or the service size, because every other number reads against it. Then add results a foreman already tracks: inspections passed, days saved, downtime cut, safe hours or apprentices trained. Writing achievements on your resume instead of duties shows a foreman what you did with the work, not only that you were there.

Numbers that prove electrical work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Project scopeSquare footage, units, floors, scheduleWired 36 townhomes over a 9-month build, from temporary power to final trim.
Service and distributionAmps, phases, panels, switchgearUpgraded a restaurant from a 200 A to a 400 A 3-phase service during a weekend closure.
InspectionsFirst-visit passes, correctionsPassed 22 of 23 rough-in inspections on the first visit over 2 years.
TroubleshootingDowntime, repeat faults, response timeTraced a recurring ground fault on a packaging line and cut unplanned stops from 6 a month to 1.
SafetyHours without a recordable, audits, lockout/tagoutLogged 4,200 crew hours with no recordable injuries as the site lead for lockout/tagout.
TrainingApprentices, crew size, toolbox talksTaught motor control wiring to 3 apprentices, who each passed their year-end lab test.

This is how one commercial journeyman's entry reads once the numbers go in. The current job leads with crew and project size, and the apprentice years shrink to 1 bullet with the hours.

Sample entry: journeyman electrician at a commercial contractor

Don't

Installed wiring and outlets in new homes.

Do

Roughed in 3 to 4 new single-family homes a month with a 2-person crew, each passing rough-in inspection on the first visit.

The rewrite gives a pace, the crew size and a result an inspector confirmed.

Don't

Responsible for troubleshooting electrical problems.

Do

Diagnosed VFD and motor control faults on 11 conveyor lines, cutting average repair time from 3 hours to 70 minutes.

Electrician skills, tools and software for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 hard skills for your resume that the posting names and a bullet of yours proves. Conduit bending, blueprint reading and troubleshooting fit almost every electrician; PLC work, fire alarm systems or solar only if you have done them on the job.

Hard skills for electricians

  • Blueprint and schematic reading
  • Conduit bending (EMT, rigid, PVC)
  • Service and panel installation
  • Branch circuit and feeder wiring
  • Load calculations
  • Motor controls and VFDs
  • Troubleshooting with multimeters and megohmmeters
  • Lighting and lighting controls
  • Fire alarm and low-voltage systems
  • Lockout/tagout

Soft skills foremen value

  • Attention to detail
  • Clear communication with other trades
  • Problem solving
  • Reliability on start times
  • Patience when training apprentices
  • Courtesy with homeowners and tenants

Software matters more as you move toward estimating, foreman or industrial work. O*NET lists Autodesk AutoCAD, SAP and Microsoft Office among electricians' software, plus industrial control software such as AVEVA InTouch HMI. Name the code edition you work to as well: NFPA released the 2026 edition of the National Electrical Code in the fall of 2025, but each state and city adopts editions on its own schedule, so write the one your jurisdiction enforces.

Electrician license, apprenticeship and certifications on a resume

Most states, the BLS reports, require electricians to pass a test and be licensed, and the tests cover the National Electrical Code plus state and local codes. License titles and levels differ from place to place, so write yours exactly as your licensing body names it. Put certifications on your resume below the license, each with its issuer and month.

Common electrician credentials and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
Journeyman license (Oregon example: General Journeyman Electrician (J))Your state or city; in Oregon, the Building Codes DivisionIn Oregon: finish an approved Oregon apprenticeship (or show 8,000 out-of-state hours plus 576 classroom hours) and pass a 52-question, open-book exam; renew every 3 years with 24 hours of continuing education.
Certificate of Completion of ApprenticeshipU.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship or a State Apprenticeship AgencyFinishing a registered apprenticeship; BLS says most run 4 or 5 years, with about 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training each year.
OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour ConstructionAn OSHA-authorized Outreach trainerA 10-hour hazard awareness class for workers, or 30 hours for supervisors and workers with safety duties. OSHA says it is a course, not a certification.
NABCEP PV AssociateNorth American Board of Certified Energy PractitionersA PV course with a NABCEP Associate Registered Training Provider, or 6 months of full-time work directly involved with solar PV, then pass the PV Associate exam.
NABCEP PV Installation ProfessionalNorth American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners6 project credits with a decision-making role, OSHA 10, 58 hours of training and a passed exam.

What to write before you hold a journeyman license

As a helper or apprentice, list your trainee or apprentice registration first, with the issuing state or program and its month, and give your hours in the apprentice job's first bullet. Use journeyman in your headline only once the license is issued. If you hold licenses in 2 states or a city and a state, list each one on its own line, newest first.

Sample Certificates section: journeyman license and training

Certificates

  • General Journeyman Electrician (J), Oregon Building Codes Division, 10/2020
  • NABCEP PV Associate, North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners, 05/2025
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction, OSHA Outreach Training Program, 03/2023

How to list education and apprenticeship training

The BLS says finishing high school, or an equivalent, is required to become an electrician, and that technical school graduates usually get credit toward their apprenticeship. The classroom side of an apprenticeship covers electrical theory, blueprint reading, math, code requirements and safety, so it belongs under Education as its own entry with the program sponsor, its city and its dates.

Each entry follows the usual pattern for education on a resume: program or degree, school or sponsor, city and dates. Once you finish an apprenticeship or a technical college certificate, drop the high school line. A GPA adds nothing on an electrician resume; name a lab result or the hours you completed instead.

Sample education entry: inside electrician apprenticeship

Education

Inside Electrician Apprenticeship09/2015 – 09/2020
Area V Inside Electrical JATC | Medford, OR

Registered apprenticeship: 8,000 hours of on-the-job training plus at least 144 hours of related instruction a year. Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship, 09/2020.

Electrician helper, apprentice and career-change resumes

Some electricians start as helpers before they enter an apprenticeship, the BLS says, and unions and contractor associations both sponsor programs. For a helper job or your first year, start with an objective, put your safety training under Certificates and show any work that proves you can lift, climb and keep a jobsite clean. The electrician apprentice resume examples show the layout once you are in a program.

  • Pre-apprenticeship or technical school: the program, the hours and the labs you completed, under Education.
  • Construction, warehouse or maintenance jobs: its own Work Experience entry with the tools you used and a count, such as orders picked or work orders closed.
  • Military service: the equipment you wired or maintained, in civilian words.
  • Habitat builds or community projects: under Volunteer Experience, with the number of homes or days.

Don't

Motivated individual seeking an electrician apprenticeship to learn a trade and grow.

Do

High school graduate with OSHA 10 and 2 summers as a framing laborer, applying for a first-year inside wireman apprenticeship. Comfortable on ladders and lifts and earned an A in Algebra II.

An objective still needs proof: safety training, jobsite time and the math the trade runs on.

If you are coming from another field, such as logistics, the military or auto repair, keep reverse-chronological order and lead with your apprentice registration and current hours. For older jobs, choose bullets that transfer to the trade: safety records, equipment you maintained, schedules you hit. Our career-change resume examples show how to frame the move, and a cover letter written like our construction cover letter examples can say why you switched trades in 2 or 3 sentences.

Electrician resume FAQ

Do I need a license to put electrician on my resume?

No, but say where you stand. Helpers and apprentices can use Electrician Helper or Apprentice Electrician as the title, with their registration under Certificates. Use journeyman or master only once that license is issued.

How do I list apprenticeship hours on a resume?

Put the total in the first bullet of your apprentice job, such as 6,400 of 8,000 on-the-job hours, and list the program under Education with its sponsor and dates. Update the number each time you apply.

Should I put my electrical license number on my resume?

Only if the posting asks for it. Write the license name, the issuing state or city and the month it was issued. An employer can look the license up with your state or city, and leaving the number off keeps it out of every portal your resume passes through.

How long should an electrician resume be?

1 page for helpers, apprentices and most journeymen. Foremen, superintendents and master electricians with 10+ years and several specialties can use 2 pages if page 1 carries the license and the latest projects.

What skills should an electrician put on a resume?

List 6 to 8 skills the posting names and your bullets prove: conduit bending, blueprint reading, service installation, motor controls or troubleshooting. Add the testing tools and software you use, and leave out anything you have only seen done.

Is OSHA 10 worth listing on an electrician resume?

Yes, especially when the posting names it. List OSHA 10-Hour Construction or OSHA 30-Hour Construction under Certificates with the month you finished. Call it training, since OSHA does not treat Outreach courses as certifications.

How do I show residential, commercial and industrial experience on one resume?

Name the work type in each job title, then lead your summary with the type the posting asks for. If 1 job covered more than one, split its bullets by type, starting with the one that matches the job you want.

Can I become an electrician without experience?

Yes, through a helper job or a registered apprenticeship. The BLS says most electricians learn the trade in a 4- or 5-year apprenticeship, so your first resume only needs to show safety training, reliable work history and the math the classroom side of an apprenticeship builds on.

How much do electricians make?

The BLS puts median annual pay for electricians at $63,190 as of May 2025, and it projects employment to grow 9% from 2025 to 2035. Leave pay off your resume and raise it once an employer makes an offer.
