22 Computer Science Resume Examples & Guide for 2026

Engineering managers, research leads and education employers all read a computer science resume for proof that you can build working software and explain it. Use these examples and the guide below to name your languages, put numbers on what you shipped, and place each degree and certification where a reader expects it.

Computer Science resume example

A computer science background can lead to software, research or teaching jobs, so the first thing your resume should make clear is which one you are after. From there, hiring teams check whether the languages you list show up in real work, and whether that work came with numbers such as response times, defects or users served. Listing a dozen languages takes a minute, but an interviewer can ask about any of them. So keep the ones you could defend, and prove each one in a bullet where you used it.

How to Write a Computer Science Resume - Key Takeaways

  • Keep to reverse-chronological order and 1 page until you pass 10 years in the field.
  • Put the role you are applying for under your name, such as Software Engineer, Computer Scientist or Curriculum Developer.
  • Give each bullet a number engineers track: response time, deploy time, tests, defects, data volume, users or students taught.
  • Pick 6 to 8 skills and languages from the job ad, and back each language with a Work Experience line that uses it.
  • Put cloud, Kubernetes or security credentials under Certificates, naming who issued each and the month you passed, and drop any that have lapsed.
  • Without full-time experience, give internships, projects and teaching roles the same numbers, then test the file in an ATS resume checker.

What hiring managers look for in a computer science resume

Whoever reads your resume wants to know what you can build, in which languages, and whether it held up once people used it. The BLS describes software developers as analyzing users' needs, designing each piece of an application and keeping it working through maintenance and testing. O*NET adds checking whether a design is feasible within time and cost limits, and modifying existing code to fix errors and improve performance. Bullets that show those tasks with a scale and a result answer the reader's questions before an interview does.

The reader changes with the job. An engineering manager looks for shipped features and production numbers, a research lab for experiments and papers, and a school or edtech company for courses taught and students reached. Whichever you target, keep the headings standard so screening software sorts each part correctly:

  • Your name, a headline with the role you want, and your email, phone and city
  • A short summary of 2 to 3 lines under the header, which prints without a heading of its own
  • Work Experience, from your current job backward
  • Skills, where your languages, frameworks and cloud platforms belong
  • Certificates, for cloud, Kubernetes or security credentials
  • Education, with your degree and, early on, 1 line on a project or course
  • Key Achievements for projects, papers or hackathon wins, or Volunteer Experience, plus Languages if you speak more than English

Best format for a computer science resume

Use the reverse-chronological resume format: your latest job at the top, each entry giving the job title, the company, where it is, and MM/YYYY dates for when you joined and left. Software titles step up in a known order, from Engineer I and II to senior, staff and principal, and newest-first order shows each step at a glance. A combination layout, which puts a skills block above your history, suits only a career changer whose strongest proof is projects rather than a technical job.

The 3 resume formatsWhich format works best for a computer science resume?Use the reverse-chronological format unless one of the other two fits your situation better. Each card opens its full guide.

Stay on 1 page until you have about 10 years of experience. After that, a software engineer with several platforms behind them, a team lead or a researcher with a track record of papers can use 2 pages, provided page 1 holds the 2 roles closest to the posting.

Computer Science resume format cheatsheet
SettingWhat to use
Length1 page under 10 years; 2 pages for long senior or research careers
HeadlineTarget role plus focus: Software Engineer, Backend Systems
Languages and toolsInside Skills, spelled as the job ad spells them (PostgreSQL, Node.js, C#)
DatesMM/YYYY for every job and degree, and Present for the role you hold now
Personal dataMost US and Canadian resumes carry no photo; leave out birth date, family status and SSN
File typeA text-based PDF, or a .docx file if the application portal requests one

Most US and Canadian resumes carry no photo. Many tech employers run applications through screening software before a person opens them, so keep the layout simple enough that every language name comes through as text.

Computer science resume summary vs. objective

If you have held a paid technical role, write a resume summary that names your role, your years, the stack you work in and your best shipped result. If you are still a student or have only internships, a resume objective fits better: the role you want, plus the strongest project or internship you can point to. Write it after your bullets, and take its number from one of them.

Computer science resume summary formula

Role with X years building kind of software or research area in 2 or 3 languages or platforms. Your strongest shipped result, with a number. Degree, certification or specialty.

Example

Software engineer with 7 years building healthcare scheduling software in Java, Spring Boot and PostgreSQL. Cut appointment-search response time from 640 ms to 180 ms for 75 clinics. B.S. in Computer Science from NC State, with the CKAD.

Don't

Motivated computer science professional with a passion for technology and strong problem-solving skills.

Do

Backend engineer with 4 years on logistics billing systems in C# and SQL Server. Moved 2.3M invoices a month onto an event queue with 0 lost records.

This version hands the reader a level, a domain, a stack and a result to ask about.

How to write computer science work experience bullets with numbers

Your current job gets 3 to 4 bullets; each earlier one gets 1 to 3. Start each with a verb, name the language or system you used, and end with what changed: faster, cheaper, fewer failures, more users. When listing work experience on a resume, pick the numbers your team already tracks in dashboards, tickets and sprint reports, since those are the ones an interviewer can probe.

Numbers that prove computer science work
AreaWhat to countExample bullet
Services and APIsResponse time, requests a day, deploy timeSplit a monolithic order service into 5 services, cutting deploy time from 50 minutes to 12.
Testing and qualityTests written, defects caught, rollbacksBuilt a regression suite of 1,300 tests that caught 22 defects before release in its first quarter.
Data and databasesRows or GB, query time, report runtimeIndexed 4 slow queries on a 300 GB MySQL database, bringing the nightly sales report from 70 to 9 minutes.
Machine learning and researchDataset size, accuracy or recall, papersTrained a defect-detection model on 48,000 labeled images, raising recall from 0.82 to 0.91, and co-wrote 1 workshop paper.
SecurityVulnerabilities closed, repositories, time to fixCleared 140 high-severity dependency alerts across 31 repositories in 6 weeks.
Teaching and curriculumStudents, courses, modules writtenWrote 12 Python lab modules for an intro course that enrolls 210 students a semester.

Below is one engineer's history written this way. The current role leads with the stack and a production result, and the first job keeps 2 lines.

Sample entry: software engineer at a healthcare scheduling company

Fixed bugs and helped with code reviews.

Do

Triaged and fixed 64 production bugs in a React and Node.js app in 2025, with a median time to fix of 2 days.

Computer science skills, languages and tools for your resume

Choose 6 to 8 technical skills for your resume that the posting names and your bullets already prove. Lead with the languages and platforms, follow with the practices (testing, CI/CD, system design), and let your results carry soft skills such as clear writing and teamwork.

Hard skills for computer science jobs

  • Data structures and algorithms
  • Object-oriented design
  • REST API design
  • SQL and database design
  • Unit and integration testing
  • Version control with Git
  • CI/CD pipelines
  • Docker and Kubernetes
  • Cloud deployment on AWS or Azure
  • Linux and shell scripting

Soft skills engineering managers value

  • Writing clear design docs
  • Giving and taking code review
  • Breaking down vague problems
  • Explaining tradeoffs to non-engineers
  • Estimating work honestly
  • Learning new codebases quickly

Name each language and tool with your skills, then once more inside the work line where you used it, so a reader sees both the keyword and the work. In O*NET's technology data for software developers, Python, Oracle Java, C++, TypeScript, SQL, Git, Docker, Kubernetes and Amazon Web Services are all flagged as in demand. Write each one the way the job ad does: PostgreSQL rather than Postgres, Node.js rather than Node.

AWS, CKAD and Security+: certifications for a computer science resume

No license is needed for most computer science jobs, so certifications back up a specific claim: that you can deploy to a cloud, run containers or secure a system. List certifications on your resume under Certificates, naming the issuer and the month you earned each one, and only where the posting or your target role uses that platform.

Computer science certifications and what each one takes
CredentialIssued byWhat it takes
AWS Certified Developer (Associate)Amazon Web ServicesAWS recommends 1+ year of hands-on experience. A 130-minute exam with 65 questions, $150; valid 3 years.
AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate)Amazon Web ServicesAWS recommends at least 1 year designing cloud solutions on AWS. A 130-minute exam with 65 questions, $150; valid 3 years.
Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD)The Linux Foundation, with the CNCFNo prerequisites. A 2-hour, online, proctored exam solved on a command line; valid 2 years.
CompTIA Security+CompTIACompTIA recommends Network+ and 2 years in a security or systems administrator role. Up to 90 questions in 90 minutes on exam SY0-701.

How to list a certification that expires or is retired

AWS associate certifications last 3 years and the CKAD 2, so check each date before you send the file and drop any credential that has lapsed. A new exam version keeps the certification's name: AWS opens registration for the DVA-C03 Developer exam on October 27, 2026, and you still write AWS Certified Developer (Associate). Microsoft now lists the Azure Developer Associate and its renewal assessment as retired, so if you hold it, keep the earned date until it lapses and let your bullets show current Azure work. A booked exam can go in too, marked scheduled with its month.

Sample Certificates section: a held certification and a booked exam

Certificates

  • Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD), The Linux Foundation, 10/2024
  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate), Amazon Web Services, scheduled 01/2027

How to list a computer science degree, coursework and projects

The BLS names a bachelor's in computer and information technology, or a related field, as the usual entry point for software developers, and at least a master's in computer science or a related field for computer and information research scientists. Then write the entry the usual way for listing education on a resume: the degree as your school awards it, the school and where it is, and the month you graduated. A research resume adds the thesis title on the degree line.

Within 2 to 3 years of graduating, add 1 line under the degree: a minor, a GPA of 3.5 or higher, or the capstone project that best matches the posting. After your first full-time technical job, Education moves below Work Experience and keeps the degree, the school, the date and at most a minor or thesis. Projects you want to keep go under Key Achievements, with the language, the scale and the result.

Sample education entry: computer science degree with a senior design project

Education

B.S. in Computer Science05/2019
North Carolina State University | Raleigh, NC

Minor in Mathematics. Senior design: a parking-availability app for 2 campus decks, built by a 5-person team.

Computer science graduate, bootcamp and career-change resumes

Without a full-time technical role yet, open with an objective, put Education near the top, and treat every piece of evidence like a job. An entry-level software engineer resume works the same way: what you built, for whom, in which language, and how many people used it.

  • Internships and practicums: a Work Experience entry with the team, the stack and what you shipped.
  • Course, capstone and personal projects: 1 line under Education or up to 3 under Key Achievements, each with the language and a user, star or data count.
  • Teaching assistant and tutoring roles: sections or students supported and labs graded, under Work Experience.
  • Coding clubs and volunteer teaching: under Volunteer Experience, with the number of students and sessions.
  • Part-time jobs outside tech: keep them, with 1 bullet that shows reliability, such as shifts covered or cash handled.

Don't

Hardworking CS grad eager to learn new things and contribute to a great team.

Do

Computer science graduate (05/2026) seeking a junior backend role. Wrote a Rust file-sync tool with 120 GitHub stars and finished a 12-week internship on a payments team.

A graduate objective earns its place with evidence: a project with a count, an internship and a date.

Moving in from IT support, data entry, teaching or a bootcamp, stay with newest-first order and start with a summary naming the technical work you already do, such as scripts you wrote or reports you automated. A career-change resume reads best when the top lines of your present job are the most technical ones, and a bootcamp sits under Education with its program name and finish date. Give the reason for the switch a short paragraph of its own in the letter you send with it; these computer science cover letter examples show how to build the rest of the letter.

Computer Science resume FAQ

How long should a computer science resume be?

1 page for most people with under 10 years of experience, graduates included. Senior engineers, team leads and researchers with a long list of systems or papers can use 2 pages, as long as page 1 carries the roles closest to the job.

What programming languages should I put on a computer science resume?

Only the ones the job ad asks for that you could code in during an interview today. Back each one with a Work Experience line that uses it, and leave out languages you have not used since a single course.

How do I list projects on a computer science resume?

Put up to 3 under Key Achievements, or 1 line under your degree if you graduated recently. Give each the language, what it does and a number: users, stars, data size or a speed result. Drop student projects once your jobs show the same skills.

Should I put my GPA on a computer science resume?

Only if it is 3.5 or higher and you graduated in the last 2 to 3 years. Some new-grad postings ask for a GPA, so include it when the ad does. Once you have a full-time technical job, your shipped work replaces it.

Should I list coursework on a computer science resume?

Only as a student or recent graduate, and only courses that match the posting, such as operating systems for a systems role or machine learning for a data role. Keep it to 1 line under Education and remove it after your first full-time job.

Do I need a master's degree for a computer science job?

Not for most software jobs. The BLS says a bachelor's is the usual requirement for software developers, while computer and information research scientists usually hold at least a master's in computer science or a related field. In the federal government, a bachelor's degree may be enough for some research jobs.

Are certifications worth adding to a computer science resume?

Yes, when they match the platform the job uses. An AWS, Kubernetes or Security+ certification backs a cloud, DevOps or security claim, but it adds little on a research or front-end resume. Add the issuer and month, and remove any that have expired.

Can I get a computer science job without an internship?

Yes, but your resume has to show the same kind of evidence another way. Lead with 2 or 3 projects that real people used, a teaching assistant or tutoring role, open-source contributions, or a part-time job where you built scripts or tools, each with a number.

Should I include salary expectations on a computer science resume?

No. Leave pay for the application form or the recruiter call. As one benchmark, BLS data put the median annual pay of software developers at $135,980 in May 2025; offers vary with your city, level and specialty.
